I saw it last night and agree with everything you said, down to the run time. Lol, I needed a brief intermission and recognized that I was leaving during the good doctor's pivotal moment/description of his history, but my end thought was "everyone's going to die anyway, so why should I be investing in his life story!?"
I thought it was a great interpretation of who Drac truly is. He hides as a human, he doesn't need to be when he's at sea planning to kill an entire crew. This movie showed how senseless and brutal he is, psychologically and physically. We got to see the monster side the entire way and I liked that. Hopefully, this movie does well enough to set up a sequel.
I completely agree. People are complaining that there is no Dracula searching for his lost love or as a romantic figure, which to some extent he is, but at heart he is like a shark - a violent killer with centuries of practice.
The problem is with this is it’s not right. Dracula came into England in the famous eastern costal seaside town of Whitby (pronounced like Whit-be) and not London or the southern part of England.
Dracula's romantic figure was created in the movies (I guess romantic stories sell). Such a thing doesn't exist in the book. I liked the movie very much. For me it's a masterpiece.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of the best horror movies of the 2010's so even though this is getting mixed reviews, my expectations are that it will be pretty good
It's also from the same director who made Trollhunter, which is my favorite found footage film, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which is my favorite PG-13 horror movie.
Yes 100 times , someone agrees , people sleep on autopsy of Jane doe . Arguably one of the best horror movies in the last 20 years . I’m excited to see this new movie honestly
I just got out of the theater and while I do agree that it was probably 15-20 minutes longer than it should have been. I rather enjoyed the slower pace and after seeing this I'm immediately interested in anything Andre Ovredal does from this point forward. As someone who always preferred werewolves over vampires I fucking adored this flick!
Half of the reviews have called it really good, the other half think it's a snooze fest. No idea what to expect Edit: I watched it and thought it was pretty good. Can see why people might dislike the pacing but the direction made up for it
It's kind of both of those combined. I thought it was really good... but I also thought it was about 40 minutes tops of substance... However it stretches itself to almost two hours. Would have made a good act one or episode 1 for an epic Dracula movie or series...
Depends on the source of the review. Most reviews written by journalists working for major outlets seem to start each review ticking off boxes and worried about social politics. They're definitely not going to like the spirituality and evil of this film.
Just got back from it…Snooze fest 🥱😴. Should’ve come out in January and it was too long. Had potential though and i liked the lead actor (Corey Harris? I think his name is…was in the walking dead briefly)
Minor Spoilers I don't know if this is even an issue in the book, but in the movie, it appears they had plenty of time to move his casket on board when the sun was up. Although this version of Dracula could fly, he still needed to sleep in his soil so they could have just moved his casket and then broken him out. They could have also tried sinking and then abandoning the ship when it was safe.
That was my thought after seeing it also, but in the book the cabin crew never do find his coffin, so it doesn’t affect the book but to change that in the film, they needed to explain better why they couldn’t have just taken the coffin into the sunlight. My guess is that they were hoping audience a would draw the implication that: A) they were already down several crew members as it was by the time they found his tomb, and B) they were already weakened by the amount of blood transfusions that took place on board. And C) they were malnourished seeing as Dracula had decimated their food supplies. Those three factors alone might have given them pause to move the coffin considering they were in no physical shape to move it.
Dastmachian was just AMAZING in this, he's a character actor with such range , here he looks and acts completely different from any of his previous roles, he's so good in this that he actually manages his character look a lot taller than the actor really is.
Just watched, I went in with decently low expectations based on what I’ve seen from my fav reviewers. I actually really enjoyed this and would totally be down for a sequel
I liked it. Definitely setting up a potential sequel. Can’t believe the dog AND the kid, that was savage. Bonus: the same young actor from Cobweb. Looking forward to his career.
I completely and utterly agree with what you're saying in regards to a CGI and practical Dracula. I always thought I was kind of a lone in that department as I was a 80's boy so all I saw was practical. Some CGI scenes in movies are so bad it looks like a computer game. Thanks for your honest review, I'll go and watch it.
I enjoyed it enough that it will be a fun flick to throw on through the holiday season. I kind of wished that Dracula taunted/played with his food more though considering he didn't have to fear being overly cautious with concealing his true nature.
This movie could have been so entertaining if they had made it a murder mystery instead. Think about it they all board at night and we know one of them is Dracula and over the course of the movie we try to piece together who's Dracula. We seen him in his monster form for when shit happens but have him mingle among the crew and passagers throwing off suspicion and trying to weasel his way into people's heads. Maybe even have a fake out where he uses his shape shifting to take the form someone else while faking his disguise persona's death. Can't go out in the day? Have a massive storm following them through the whole movie. It would be such a fun take on this. It be the suspense of The Thing only with Dracula.
I'm still going to see it, but I must say seeing your reaction Cody, definitely bummed me out. Was hoping this was the one. My taste in vampire films is exactly like yours. I like mine dark and violent. It's why Near Dark is my favorite vampire film. The CGI version of Dracula isn't what I would want but because of the tone of this film I will be checking it out. Thanks for the review Cody.
Cody is typically right on these reviews. He isn't afraid of being politically incorrect or trying to appease to any directors/filmmakers like a lot other youtubers do
I've heard so many comparisons between Alien and this film. The plot already existed in Bram Stoker's novel. For me, this movie is a masterpiece. By the way, good video!
I kinda like and want more of this black lead in period horror. Overlord did it, Lovecraft country did, this obviously. I don't think any have succeeded at it yet but the concept is fertile and interesting
I am looking forward to seeing this late tonight. Ever since that random trailer that popped up in my viewing of Renfield, I was excited!! I still am. It’s, on the surface, a genius idea but I can see how it could limited based on the source material and the title. I was hoping this could be used to start a new horror “DARK” universe. But it sounds like it doesn’t. That being said, I am still looking forward to it. It’s something different for me to see in theaters. Normally I’d wait for something like this.
With me, I love the old Universal Studios Monster Movies. Biggest selling point for me with Renfield was it's connection to the old Dracula movie, so have a feeling I'll be the type to enjoy this. The Dracula movies before normally just gloss over the voyage to show the aftermath, so think it would be nice to see where all that carnage came from. But still enjoyed your video. Thank you, Cody.
Excellent review bro! Zero marketing also... I thought the film was exactly how it needed to be as it was only a short chapter in the book...the End of the film (the very last scenes on the water) is where the film should have ended, and it would have been perfect for the Book. The way they did it though seems to be for a sequel with a huge divergence from the source material... making the whole thing more interesting, and not a bad thing. Thoroughly enjoyed the film. Oh and it finally showed Dracula as the monster the novel portrayed... Something to think about.
Im very excited to see this movie as someone who really loves the captain's log section of the Dracula novel. Just wondering Cody, have you seen Trollhunter? It's from the same director and has a found footage feel but it's not shaky cam style at all and it's up there as one if the best movies in that style along with Cloverfield
Trollhunter was one of the best found-footage experiences my friends and I ever had! Once upon a time, we used to watch any and all found-footage we could... well, find, and Trollhunter was one of the best! Thanks for reminding everyone! It's alotta fun!
I honestly fell in love with this movie Basically “Alien” but in a boat I love the chapter in the book, Bear Mccreary on music! The ENDING!!!!!!!! oooof as a person who puts vampires and werewolves over Superheroes and even my beloved Wrestling This is my instant movie of the year, I’ve been waiting for a movie like this! And it over delivered
I agree 100%. The first thing I said to my wife was that it was a bit of a let down and a little boring. Also I think there was a missed opportunity at the ending. How amazing would it have been if the final scene in the tavern was Gary Oldman's Dracula.
I love Javier Botet, I have wished that his talent with creature roles would come across a good script. I have to say i liked the film but it wasnt my favorite , the acting was great , David Dastmalchian is one if my favorite actors , hes been in so many films recently and im happy for him. And of course Liam Cunninham, i hadnt really seen him since his amazing role in GOT and i absolutely loved his performance. I do wish honestly i saw more of Javier Botet's Dracula , Javier is such a cool talent and i just wanted to see more of the creature, and im not gonna lie i did want a little more gore but good nonetheless
This movie... This right here... is how they should have presented the new Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie. The settings, the natural lighting effects, the sheer number of people just in the dock alone, the overwhelming sense of atmosphere delivered in a perfect combination of visuals and music... In just the first eleven to twelve minutes of the film to the point where they set off, and the visuals inside the ship throughout the rest of the film, the natural way the people interacted with each other... If the people who had made this film had also made the D&D film, I can only imagine how much more successful it could have been.
I really enjoyed this film, way more than i thought i would. I agree that it needed to be 15-20 min shorter. Even tho the slow reveal of Dracula was part of the reason the film was so awesome. Phenomenal creature movie!
They didn't know what it was of how to get rid of it. Dracula had to be in bat form to make it through the trip do you expect Gary Oldmans Dracula to run around the ship killing everyone? I didn't, it was a great film and added some nice fresh ideas. That girl falling out of the dirt filled crate was awesome. The ability to fly gave him a clear advantage the cook thought he could steal a dinghy and get away until he heard the wings flapping just awesome stuff. I can't wait to get it and examine it more
Thats what kept me invested. Just imagining Gary Oldman in monster form. He made a deal with the devil and it needs to feed. I wish they just kept in more practical. The bat scene in Bram Stokers Dracula 1992 was amazing.
I find it funny that you would describe Ovredal as a small-space director, given that the only movie of his I've seen is Trollhunter, which keeps moving from set to set, including some vast fields.
I loved this movie!! I thought it had a great pace, I didn't fall asleep or get bored lol.... (IE Oppenheimer) ...good monster movie, it's not ALIEN, but it has similarities 🤘🎬🫶
The part you mention all shot in one location...*it's just on this ship* - reminded of M Night Shyamalan - we've had 'mysterious aging syndrome on an Island' and 'mysterious people in the woods, in a Cabin' ! These Directors must be the "darlings" of low(est) budget, maximum run time producers?!😊😉
Hi Cody!!! I’m a long time fan… I always love watching your videos and hearing your opinions. Now I might not agree with all of your opinions but I respect them. I hope you see this man. Appreciate you for entertaining me so much… I hope you have a great rest of your day or night!
@@Trill_Tour lol I’ve never seen that movie but I’ve seen the only scary part in it which is the cellphone footage as you know.. a lot of people say that movie is boring and not even scary. Shutter 2004 Thai version is scarier I’m sure
David Dastmalchian has become my favorite character actor of the last decade. But he's got a Sean Bean thing going on - all his characters seem to be killed!
This movie seemed to get buried and it never got talked about much. Just came out on streaming here in the UK, and it was really enjoyable. How it ended just screams for a sequel and would love to see the journey of that character continue. Doubt we will ever see it though.
I thought it was a very good movie myself. Dracula's plan was laid it in the third act: rationing his feeding so that he survives the trip to England. That's why he didn't kill them all the first night. And there really isn't much need for him to speak. What would be the point for him to talk to his victim's before he kills them? That's actually something I give the film credit for as too many movies insert speeches before kills that make no rationale sense. My only issue was the ending with the obvious sequal set up. But I agree with you on CGI in horror movies. We haven't really had a CGI less horror movie since early 90s and Coppola's Dracula.
I appreciate any decent vampire movie now days im like u happy as hell vampire movies comin back i liked this movie the endin for a sequel i hope they may go with i was disappointed we never got a follow up to dracula untold i loved it but a good dracula trilogy would be great
I’m actually looking forward to watching it. It seems like a great Saturday night viewing. After the release of “Underwater” I’ve opened up to the possibility of a under the radar movie actually being good.
If this movie had nothing to do with Dracula, I wouldn't have watched it. In fact, before I knew, when I saw the trailer, I remember saying aloud "That looks stupid". Yes I know. A fan of Dracula should know it's a Dracula movie already, but... I saw the 1931 & 1992 versions twice each, and it had been a while for each one 😅
My mind somehow tells me that that old man who left the ship before the departure could have been put in the same position as the girl. He seemed to know a lot about Dracula
I am not a movie critic. I am just an average movie fan that just wants to be entertained when I go to the movies. I disagree with this dudes criticism of the movie. I could care less about the score or the length of the movie. If the movie is good, it will not seem that long. This movie did not seem long and was entertaining. This was the best Dracula movie that I have watched since Bram Stoker's Dracula with Keanue Reeves and Anthony Hopkins. Do not let these negative reviews keep ypu from watching this movie, it was pretty good to me.
as this movie as been pulled from a u.k release {even though its about dracula coming to the u.k} can you tell me as i wont be able to frigging see it,if the end is like the book. i wont say anymore as there maybe people who have not read the novel
Watched it on showtime. Felt very predictable. I hate watching characters “catch up” to what the audience already knows. I also wish the bad guy was at a major disadvantage the whole movie instead of being overpowered and taking everyone out one by one.
I actually really appreciate the reviews and comments of the movie being a snooze fest. It's almost like these people really read the action packed novel...
The problem is with this is it’s not right. Dracula came into England in the famous eastern costal seaside town of Whitby (pronounced like Whit-be) and not London or the southern part of England.
I lost counts of how many stupid moment they have, the kid in the locked room, them searching for the coffin, the girl getting fed on, their trap for the creature.
I wonder would the movie work better if they didn’t tell you that this was based on the novel so that you wouldn’t know the impending doom? (I haven’t watched it just speculating from the review)

Right, it was awful
That was my thought after seeing it also, but in the book the cabin crew never do find his coffin, so it doesn’t affect the book but to change that in the film, they needed to explain better why they couldn’t have just taken the coffin into the sunlight.
My guess is that they were hoping audience a would draw the implication that:
A) they were already down several crew members as it was by the time they found his tomb, and
B) they were already weakened by the amount of blood transfusions that took place on board. And
C) they were malnourished seeing as Dracula had decimated their food supplies.
Those three factors alone might have given them pause to move the coffin considering they were in no physical shape to move it.
In the book though, the sun didn’t kill Dracula.

Hey Cody, I’d like to see your opinion on what are the scariest films ever and/or scariest scenes ever. Recently I’ve been on a binge with this
Lake Mungo
@@Trill_Tour lol I’ve never seen that movie but I’ve seen the only scary part in it which is the cellphone footage as you know.. a lot of people say that movie is boring and not even scary. Shutter 2004 Thai version is scarier I’m sure
Really enjoyed this , the atmosphere was great and the movie went very quickly
Corey Hawkins reminded me of Ishmael from Moby Dick and Dracula is the White Whale
I still think Dracula untold was the Best Dracula film.
David Dastmalchian has become my favorite character actor of the last decade. But he's got a Sean Bean thing going on - all his characters seem to be killed!
This is why I still have a soft spot for Coppolas Dracula, they use practical affects. Anytime I see cgi I loose interest, it's never that scary.
This movie seemed to get buried and it never got talked about much. Just came out on streaming here in the UK, and it was really enjoyable. How it ended just screams for a sequel and would love to see the journey of that character continue. Doubt we will ever see it though.
What's the guitar and drum riff lyou use at the start of all your videos? It's really good!
Just wondering because I haven't seen it but, have you reviewed Stakelander and Stakelander 2? If not watch it please
bride of chucky thru cult of chucky is getting a 4k remaster. set to be released this month on the 29th.
Great review
I like the director's 2020 movie Mortal, a Thor descendant film.
I appreciate any decent vampire movie now days im like u happy as hell vampire movies comin back i liked this movie the endin for a sequel i hope they may go with i was disappointed we never got a follow up to dracula untold i loved it but a good dracula trilogy would be great
I liked it 😁 thought it was a bit of a slow burn but I like slow burn horror
This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year...
And it isn't even getting released in my country🙄
Hey Cody. If this were to go into your 31 on 31 ranking of Vamps/Wolves, where around about would it land?
Does anyone know the name of the outro song ?
I’m actually looking forward to watching it. It seems like a great Saturday night viewing. After the release of “Underwater” I’ve opened up to the possibility of a under the radar movie actually being good.
Underwater creeped me out! Last shot
@@edwardprice4723 I wasn’t expecting it to be a Lovecraftian movie and then BAM Chathulu!
How could you mess a concept like this up? Movie would have higher ratings if it used practical effects and gore
Have you watched midnight mass? I can’t believe you haven’t reviewed it.
My mind somehow tells me that that old man who left the ship before the departure could have been put in the same position as the girl. He seemed to know a lot about Dracula
Haven't seen the movie yet really like Dracula's design its genuinely unsettling to me
I am not a movie critic.
I’m also not a big fan of cgi in horror but I that’s the thing to do nowadays I guess 🤦🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️
VAMPIRATES!!!
OMGz .... skin cream !? .... that's not metal !? 😜
Cant wait to see this one, as a BIG Drac nerd
Seen it last night it was ehhhh so-so ill watch the sequel because i think hopefully it has the potential to be better ............
I actually enjoyed this movie
My god does anyone remember the recent planet of the apes series? The cgi in those were incredible. Can we get back to that?
Excellent watch😊
as this movie as been pulled from a u.k release {even though its about dracula coming to the u.k} can you tell me as i wont be able to frigging see it,if the end is like the book. i wont say anymore as there maybe people who have not read the novel
I’m seeing this Sunday so I’m curious how I’m going to like it
Have you watched Blood Vessel? (Also 🧛♂️ on a 🚢)
Great video Cody! For me it was a total flop, I thought it was slow, cliché, and it bored me to tears😭😭
Watched it on showtime. Felt very predictable. I hate watching characters “catch up” to what the audience already knows. I also wish the bad guy was at a major disadvantage the whole movie instead of being overpowered and taking everyone out one by one.
Yeah it was easy for me to predict that Dracula was in the room with kid after all tbh
Im so confused, some like it many hate it.
I actually really appreciate the reviews and comments of the movie being a snooze fest.
It's almost like these people really read the action packed novel...
Actually in the book no one survived so the fsct 1 person survived in this film was not expected
The problem is with this is it’s not right. Dracula came into England in the famous eastern costal seaside town of Whitby (pronounced like Whit-be) and not London or the southern part of England.
Agree with your cgi gripe they did it 30/40 years ago why not today?? It’s all about $$$$
Will you be at Days of the Dead next year?
I lost counts of how many stupid moment they have, the kid in the locked room, them searching for the coffin, the girl getting fed on, their trap for the creature.
I'm with you on the CGI, it just takes me out of it.
I wonder would the movie work better if they didn’t tell you that this was based on the novel so that you wouldn’t know the impending doom? (I haven’t watched it just speculating from the review)
🎉
Great review. I was unfortunately very bored during this film.
It was good
I enjoyed it (:
