    Gregory Peck was a great actor. Just look at the scene where he tells the nanny that if his family wants a dog, he'll pick it out, not her. Miss him. Glad you love this movie Cody!

    The thing that I really liked, though, about the scene where Mrs. Baylock kills Katherine is how she knew just by Mrs. Baylock being there at that moment that she was there to kill her.

    Gregory Peck was pretty much retired when he took the role. He had just lost his son to suicide and used his grief for the role and you can feel his anguish.

    Damien Thorne is the ultimate “evil child” in horror.

    • @MrImastinker
      @MrImastinker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It really works because you're left so unsure of how much Damian knows.
      Like, on some instinctual level he is evil incarnate. But he's still a child, and thus seems to possess a rather childlike understanding of things.
      Making it all the more frightening when he survives, and you know this little tyke is going to grow up to be the most dangerous man on the planet.

    • @Xehanort10

      @@MrImastinker Especially when he waves the Doberman who hypnotised the nanny into hanging herself away. And you don't know whether he was just riding around on his tricycle like a little kid would do or if he deliberately knocked into Katherine so she'd miscarry her and Robert's actual kid so Damien could inherit the Thorn empire after they die.

    Something that people may not realize - the actor who played the photographer that gets decapitated is the same actor who played Lovejoy, the valet in Titanic. Also, The Omen is one of the few horror movies I personally own on Blu-Ray. There's not many horror I own - mostly because I'm not a huge horror fan - but I knew I was getting The Omen.

    • @goodowner5000
      @goodowner5000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, David Warner was great as the photographer in "The Omen" and Lovejoy in "Titanic". Another film of his is a sleeper gem from 1979 , where he plays Jack The Ripper to Malcolm McDowell's H. G. Wells in "Time After Time" w/ one time wife, Mary Steenburgen. Directed by future "Star Trek" movie installments Dir. Nicholas Meyer. Wells chases Jack The Ripper to modern day (1979) San Francisco.

It’s as suspenseful as it is brilliant and well paced throughout the entire run time. Gregory Peck and Lee Remick are fantastic in this 70’s classic horror movie. Kudos to Jerry Goldsmith for his Oscar Winning Score for The Omen! 🏆 I honestly think that its the best 70’s horror movie after The Exorcist but prior to John Carpenter’s Halloween and Alien. #Damien #RichardDonner #GregoryPeck #LeeRemick

But then again a great horror movie is a great horror movie no matter when it was made. I love watching these older movies with her and seeing what her reaction is to them being that she has grown up with the type of horror movies we have today that unfortunately include CGI blood from time to time.

    • @vonVile
      @vonVile 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      CGI can work if used correctly. The movie Tim Burton's Sleepy Hallow shows how it should be done by enhancing the practical. If a person gets their head cut off with a knife CGI should be used to show the wetness of the neck still pumping blood.
      The problem is Hollywood doesn't put in the effort in detail in horror movies with CGI like they do with Star Wars or MCU movies. If they did horror movies would have more style and stop being PG-13 BS.

    This movie TERRIFIED me as a child, more than anything else. I loved Freddy & Michael & Scream, thought Jason was dumb 😂 thought Exorcist was cool…but The Omen man…the Satan worshippers were sooo creepy, and that insane score made me run out of the room whenever it came on
    EDIT: I actually enjoyed the sequels, they’re no where near as scary as the first they’re more fun, and expand the mythology really well. There’s a 4th one that was like a reboot but I don’t remember a single thing about it lol and I hated the remake it was entirely pointless.

    The acting of Gregory Peck et al is not outdated or old-school; it is the reserved, polite nature of his character and that of a mature man. The acting and dialog is excellent for then, today, or any time.

    • @LarryFleetwood8675
      @LarryFleetwood8675 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, it's an old movie and a fantasy story basically thus not realistic or necessarily believable hence the more theatrical approach. A certain suspension of disbelief is the road one needs to take here, just go with it. All the old actors from this time are pretty much gone by now, it's a lost art form almost so this is very much old-school acting and very different from acting today which honestly isn't really all that memorable as these classically trained thespians were. I'd go as far as to say, it probably died out sometime in the 1990s instead we have 'performers of dialog' now... 🎭

      @@LarryFleetwood8675 I don't know, I guess I just don't have the talent to recognize acting styles. I don't understand classical acting and modern acting. To me it all just seems to be the character's behavior and then if it is acted well or not.

    This movie is a masterpiece, and the review is quite solid. Most excellent.
    Two aspects that really drive this movie for me are the performances of Patrick Troughton and Leo McKern as Father Brennan and Bugenhagen, respectively. Though they are technically on the side of good in this story (barring Brennan's quest for redemption after his participation in the birth and adoption of Damien), they are easily two of the scariest aspects of this film. This is primarily because their performances and portrayals of those characters are so completely convincing that it becomes quite easy to lose yourself in it all. You believed it with all your heart when Father Brennan showed up for the first time and started letting Robert Thorn know that shit was not okay. Just as well, you were equally enveloped when Bugenhagen comes right out of the gate with, "Come along, Mister Thorn. We had better get to work.". Those two characters are easily the most underrated of the film, and were definitely failed miserably by the remake. They were treated as afterthoughts, mostly. That's nothing against Peter Postlethwait and the legendary Michael Gambon, but those characters just did not live up to the original portrayals for one reason or another.

    This movie is beyond creepy & what a contrast to Richard Donner’s later work (especially with “Superman” 2 years after this). The acting from its three leads and David Warner as the photographer is really subtle and tragic, Donner’s direction is effective, the death scenes are haunting & Jerry Goldsmith’s disturbing Gregorian chant-inspired score will leave its mark even after the credits (he earned that Oscar; too bad he never got another despite numerous nominations)

    1. Love the Phantasm T-shirt! 2. I'll give the 2006 remake a couple sparkly points for casting: Liev Schrieber as the ambassador was good, and look for Mia Farrow as the updated "Mrs. Blaylock."

    Great review! This is among one of my top favorite 70's horror flicks! Jerry Goldsmith's score was superb! I look forward to hearing what ya thought about the second, which I liked that one too.

    I’ve only seen the movie once but I do have the complete omen collection from scream factory that you just showed and I can’t wait to watch all of them. Gonna be epic! I’ll definitely be tuning in to your reviews too of all of them

    Love this movie! The sub-plot with the photographer foreseeing deaths is brilliant. Sequels 2 and 3 are not so bad. Never had any interest in the reboot/remakes though.

      I see what you mean about the old skool acting, these guys played it like Shakespeare, very theatrical like they were doing it as a stage play or something but I guess that's a trope of the '70s and everything earlier.

    Great review buddy on a horror classic. Jerry Goldsmith did win an academy award for the incredible score and I still hear the theme when I see certain friends or family’s children. Hope you like Damien Omen 2 and The Final Conflict which are two better than average sequels.

    Great review of an absolute classic Cody. To me the Omen will always be a trilogy (fuck that 4th one and the remake) and its my all time favourite movie trilogy. Really interested in your reviews of the 2nd and 3rd as first time views. I actually prefer part 2 but I think that's because I saw it when I was 11 and Damien in it is I think 12 or just older so it made his realisation of what he is more dramatic being of a similar age when I first saw it. Omen 3 is not as bad as people say but the ending is such a let down.

    Found the special edition DVD of The Omen at a discount store. Watched it as soon as I got home and man, I was underwhelmed! We usually agree on movies so now I’m wondering if I need to re-watch. Afterward I watched the recent remake and found it to be more hospitable. That “old school cinema” element that you mention really bugged me about the original movie from the 1970s. Because of that I didn’t bother with the sequels. Should I?

    I remember watching The Omen back when I was a child in the 80s with my parents and it’s still very effective. This movie, Carrie, A Nightmare on Elm Street, one of the Friday the 13th movies and Trilogy of Terror (hilarious) were the first horror movies I remember watching. I also remember watching this dumbass 70s B movie called Food of the Gods, you’re right some of those 70s horror films didn’t age well at all except for this and Alien.

    Neat review Cody. I watched this during quarantine and it's really good. I like a good old movie a lot so this worked well even if the premise was contrived and the scene you mentioned is a little goofy. Solid stuff. 8.5/10
    This sounds like a fun 31 on 31. Just curious,is Sean doing this with you guys? I love when you guys all team up like this.
