  • Afleet Alex (born May 9, 2002 in Florida) is an American thoroughbred race horse who, in 2005, won two of America's classic races, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. He is owned by the Cash Is King Stable partnership, was trained by Tim Ritchey and was ridden by Jeremy Rose. In twelve lifetime starts, Alex won eight times (six times in stakes, three times in G1 stakes), placed twice (both in G1 stakes), and came in third once (in a G1 stakes) over 12 starts, for lifetime earnings of $2,765,800.
    Bred in Florida by John Martin Silvertand, Afleet Alex is out of the winning mare Maggy Hawk and counts multiple Grade 2-placed Unforgettable Max as a full brother. Maggy Hawk is by Hawkster, a world record holder on turf at a mile and a half. His maternal granddam is 1983 Demoiselle Stakes (G1) winner Qualique. Qualique was sired by Hawaii, a multiple grade one (G1) winner and marathon turf specialist. Also on his dam's side is Sir Gaylord, half-brother to Secretariat, who sired his fourth dam, Gaylord's Touch. Maggy Hawk has three foals of racing age, two runners, two winners and two stakes horses, including Afleet Alex. He was sired by Northern Afleet, a stakes winner from seven furlongs to nine furlongs, who was the son of the 1987 Canadian Horse of the Year, Afleet. Afleet was by the leading sire Mr. Prospector.

    Alex was an amazing horse, Small, not great looking, but man could he run!!!! Some two year olds who look really good, don't develop as good three year olds. Alex look REAL good at two, and even better at thee. His Preakness and Belmont were one of a kind, and prove you can throw time our the window when it comes to great horses. 2005 had many good horses. But they couldn't compare with Alex. His incredible speed, turn of foot, determination to win not matter what the cirumstances, make him a very, very, special horse!!!

    One of my favorite horses of all time. Should really have been a TC winner and possibly a Breeder's Cup Classic winner. As his trainer says: he had tremendous acceleration and stamina. Could win at any distance. Also think he would have handled turf.

      Love his temperament too. No fuss and bother either before or after the race. He definitely knows he’s the man.

    Alex was a terrific horse, coming down the stretch he just blew by others. I agree he is under rated. I don't like the extended gate at the Derby. Too many horses. Now, for the Secretariat fans, I know your here, your always here. It just so happens that I believe Secretariat was the best horse I ever saw run. But this is a tribute to Afleet Alex, and he certainly deserves a tribute, as this horse was just amazing when he ran.

    What a special horse. One of my all time favourites. He won at distances from 5 1/2 f- 11/2 miles. And he could win on a fast track or an off track. That is some very versatile horse to say the least.

    One of my favorite putee tats from this century. And, yes, I know he finished third in Kentucky but Alex is a great argument for why the Derby should be limited to 12 horses and not continue as the ridiculous stampede it's become. Giacomo, you're a bum.

    One of those horses who seemed as if he should have won every race he entered. I think I bet him in just about every race he ever ran, except his opener. Should have been a Triple Crown winner. Might have taken down Saint Liam in the Classic too.

      A better ride in the Derby makes him a deserving Triple Crown winner. In any case, what a wonderful little horse he was.

    • @brucerobbins3584
      @brucerobbins3584 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Smogger911 Rose rode him fine. 20 horses mean trouble for any end runner like Alex. He got stuck in traffic, had to check him, and when he finally got clear on the rail, it was too late. This is racing luck at the Derby. Many horses get it. Yes, Alex was visibly the best horse that year. Giacomo's win was a fluck. So was the Horse who placed.
      An amazing horse. I consider him a kind of Citation in many ways. Look at his two year old races. Usually he was running wide, 4 wide, and still won big time.

    • @brucerobbins3584
      @brucerobbins3584 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Smogger911 jockys don't control other horses; just their horse. With 20 horses on the track, anything can happen. In the pre-Derby races, Rose many times rode Alex and had to run 4 wide, and Alex still won. In the Derby he finished 3rd, not far behind. I don't know what better ride you think he could have had. Rose got him through to the rail, and if the race had been a little longer, he would have won. He was a much better horse than Giacomo, as shown in the Preakness and Belmont.

    • @brucerobbins3584
      @brucerobbins3584 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Smogger911 I wouldn't be so critical of Jeremy Rose. Trying to look into Rose's head. He must have had no second thoughts about Alex running wide, as h e had done so many times, In sprints. He was in the middle and had to make a decision which way to go. To the rail, or outside, if there was no hole between horses. He took him to the rail, something that Eddie Arcaro would do. If he went outside, he still would have to be checked, and would have to run a longer distance, which may not have mattered to Alex, as we could see later.
      Well, we agree Alex was the best horse and should have won the Triple Crown, and that puts him in a club of great horses who did not win the Triple Crown. There are many.

  • @dippens3827

    No horse has made that move in Belmont, no not even fricking Secretariat, and let me reiterate that if not for Secretariats Belmont performance and the fact he was running on concrete,(so his times were much faster ) he would have been just another great horse. Real horseman know there were many better. Alex would be in his ballpark easy...

    • @brucerobbins3584
      @brucerobbins3584 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Amen!!! Alex was special, and may be the most underated horse ever. His pre derby races showed him to be a champion. The Preakness, where he was knocked to his knees, then got up to win by 5 lengths, the Belmont, which had one of the greatest runs I've ever seen. If it wasn't for the freakish Derby, he WOULD have won the TC.
      Sec was running against a pretty weak field. 2005 had many good horses: Andromeda's Hero, Flowerr Alley, Sun King, Nolan's Cat and a few more.
      Remember in all those pre Derby races, Alex looked like he was always running wide, which is what happens to late runners. Even ini slop he could do it.
      I agree totally with your opinions of Secretariat and his Belmont. I have heard that several other track records were broken by other horses in the weeks surrounding the Belmont, indicating that the track was super fast.
      My fave is Citation, who won the TC in 1948. What a champ!!!!

    • @stevencooke6451
      @stevencooke6451 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No need to bring Secretariat into this. Afleet Alex was an incredible horse who could have run the table as a three year old.

      Afleet Alex turn of foot was unmatched. Push button and exploded. He runs by horses who are all out without jeremy rose even needing to touch him. Another horse that was unreal and doesnt get respect he deserves was Ghostzapper. Watch his races.

      Real Horsemen do NOT know that many horses were better than Secretariat...Stop making up Stories....Secretariat broke Records on TURF as well....So Churchill and Pimlico were on rock hard fast surfaces also?...Every Track he ran on was rock hard lightning fast?...Grow up sir

      Why would there be a need for DQ. . If scrappy t won then there would have been a DQ. Since afleet alex won, and finished in front of Scrappy T, no need for DQ. This is really stupid question. With all due respect.
