dude that would be so cool. Like the top down perspective resembling the open 3d field from ocarina of time, with enemy spawns working like dragon quest XI, and the side scrolling working more like hollow knight. There's tons of potential here.

While flawed in it's execution, the concept for Zelda II made plenty of sense at the time they started work on it. In Japan, the Dragon Slayer and Wonder Boy series were already popular and still growing, while Dragon Quest had only just come out and Final Fantasy wasn't out yet. Not to mention all of the side scrolling medieval / barbarian fantasy themed games that pretended they had something to do with RPGs but were only borrowing the visual style for purely action gameplay. In that environment, a side-scrolling Zelda doesn't seem that weird after all.

I enjoyed Zelda 2 quite a bit. I almost bought a Philips CDI based on it having another Side Scrolling Zelda game, but it was way too expensive and I didn't like using a TV remote control as a game controller. The Link power up in Mario Maker 2 is quite satisfying.

Growing up my best friend had an NES and I played both Zelda 1 & 2 quite, but remembered liking Z2 slightly more. Fast forward to now and I just recently got the NES Mini where I revisited both games again, and both brought back fond memories and I played for hours. That said I did find Z2 quite hard and almost frustrating at first and can't imagine how I ever played this without the save points the mini has.

Zelda II is one of my favortie Zeldas to revisit.
Lately, when I play, I tackle Death Mountain immediately after the first palace. It levels you up a lot if you get far enough each time, and eventually you get the hammer. It's a great way to grind while still (eventually) making progress.

For years as a kid Zelda 1 and 2 were my favorite to play even though I had never beat the first temple of either (still haven't beaten them to this day) but it didn't turn me from the series and I in fact went on to play and beat Link to the Past, Ocarina, Majora, and Twilight really loving those. I haven't played all the titles but Zelda 2 was the first one I fell fully in love with because it drew me in with it's D&D style of RP.

Played it when I was a kid on my cousin's Nintendo over 25 years ago, never once thought it was anywhere close to a bad game. It wasn't easy, for sure - and I absolutely sucked at games back then too XD- but every time I played it, and I played it a lot of times, it was a lot of fun. I didn't know anybody who cared that it was different from the first one back then. In fact, we loved it more for that reason. If I wanted an identical game to the first one, I'd replay the first one.

I love The Legend of Zelda franchise, but I absolutely hated playing Zelda II. The enemies were way too cumbersome unfair. The iron knuckle is a particularly good example of how bad the fighting in the game was; every single time you think you can fake him out, he gets you, and you can take loads of damage from him, so you end up just spamming the attack and spending forever trying not to get hit (oh, but you will). The ONLY level in that game that was fun for me was the final palace where you fight Gannon. The iron knuckle in THAT level was greatly improved. I loved that they added the jumping for him to spice things up, but they also gave him that weak point under the suit so if you jumped up while he was jumping, you could take him down much faster that way. And the flaming bird enemy was fun in that game too, because you had to time the fireballs right and get in there and just lay waste to that thing. That’s it, though, everything else was a horrible experience for me.
