Cat Delete / Straight Pipe on Celica GT-S - Probably not a good idea

  • I should have seen this coming. If you are thinking about de-catting your Celica, take a look at this video and a hard look in the mirror. Learn from my mistakes and do better.
    Definitely going to change this set up ASAP. My DNA exhaust was rattling and falling apart so I'm going for a custom set up. This is the first phase of putting the system together and we have a long way to go.

    I've actually got a deep sound out of mine. DC Sports Headers, cat delete, res delete, and a Magnaflow axle back exhaust muffler with exhaust tip. And i got to say it sounds very nice. You don't get a ricer sound at all! And one day my dad wanted to run an errand and i let him drive my car and it sounded even better not being the one driving it! When he pulled out on the highway it sounded really nice. Mine is a 2000 Celica GT-S.

      That's awesome! It is hard to get a small 4 cylinder to sound good. I've changed it up a bit, added a small resonator and a black widow muffler. It's raspy but sounds pretty good.

    On an aspirated engine removing the cat and release all the exhaust cuts pressure at low rpm and the car goes much slower in recovery. I had 200 cells and cat back exhaust from invidia and we had 200 hp on dyno! GREAT CAR

    • @Witnesswhiteness
      @Witnesswhiteness 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completely agree. I've been driving exclusively 1st gen vibe gt's (same engine and trans, basically an American matrix xrs) my 05 gt had a clogged cat but it would still push around 180hp and do 5second 0-60 times. As soon as the cat split open, was racing a random old body mustang who tried pulling away from me after slowing me down by pulling out in front of me, cat blew open at around 120 redlining 4th. When that happened I noticed about a .5 to 1 second loss in my 0-60 time, but gained around 4 seconds to my 0-100 by keeping it above 5k rpm. Without a cat it definitely takes off slower and bogs out alot more in 1st, but as long as your T.W.O and redlining, after 1st gears 5k rpm point it starts picking up all the power it lost.
      My idea was to do a cat delete N/A by replacing the cat and some piping more down stream with a glass pack then a small steel cone in front of it to restrict some exhaust and hopefully keep the back pressure up, then testing and keep shaving off more and more of the top of the cone till it gets to a point the engine doesnt have the restriction of the cats honeycombs, but it doesnt loose any power under 5k rpm.
      Seems cheaper to me than a 1k$+ turbo or supercharger kit that the engine probably cant handle being at 280k miles and nearly 20 years old.
      Still an amazing car though, I'm hoping that if they dont ever bring anything like it back with all the new engine tech and make a better engine that performs the same with the vvtL-I system, I'll atleast be able to own a few old ones fully rebuilt so I can keep driving with a 2zzge for the rest of my life. I've gotten so comfortable driving Pontiac vibe gt's the past 4-5 years I can float shift under 3k rpm or at redline, up or down any gear. I prefer to clutch for 2nd cause of the rpm drop between 1st and and, but from 2nd up, it shift so smoothly at any rpm, you really dont need to use the clutch at all. You just need to reduce torque, pop out of gear, get to the rpm of the next desired gear and press the lever lightly into that gears gate until it pops in. Which definitely makes a long stop and go trip, alot more comfortable.

    I like it. It's becoming obvious that ICE cars wont exist in the not-so-distant future as more and more anti-emissions bills get signed into law, so I have a strong appreciation for the exhaust note of just about any car. At some point we will reminisce about the sound of a gasoline engine, including the ricer cars.

    • @Witnesswhiteness
      @Witnesswhiteness 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even with a cat, if you have an upgraded exhaust system it's still ridiculously loud over 3k rpm. But if your good enough you can keep it under and really quiet. Took me awhile to learn how but I can even float shift up and down every gear under 3k rpm, I can also float shift up and down on limiter. 2and is the hardest to float into cause of the 2-4k rpm drop. I pretty much only hit the clutch to come out of or into 1st or reverse lol. I just lightly left off the gas, let the rpms drop, and slip it into which ever gear I want depending on speed. I've floated into 2nd from 6th at 55 pretty much straight into lift. I couldn't imagine a better engine and trans for performance and daily driving.

  • @Witnesswhiteness
    @Witnesswhiteness 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The world needs a 2021-2022 3zzge 2.0L with the vvtL-I system and of course, the 6 speed manual. Hell Toyota made a 300hp 3 banger. I'm sure they could look into rebuilding the vvtL-I system with a block that doesnt explod when you get over 800-900hp.
    I mean, it's been a long time since the 2zzge fan Club has gotten anything to make us interested in their new motors. They just slap turbos on everything they say that's economy/performance while abandoning the vvtL-I platform.
    It might just be me, but the sound of lift kicking in and the look of the guy your racings face when he realizes you have alot more power and rpm to go for the gears than he thought when lift kicks in.
    I've had cops ask if it was modified (illegally modified), I've had friends and strangers ask how much boost it's running saying it sounds like a twin turbo car, only to be amazed when I say its N/A nearly bone stock and that the only possible modifications that could exist in the car are internal engine components that the previous owner may or may not have installed. (Got told my 05 vibe gt was once built for a sema show but got in a bad wreck on the way and was being rebuilt on a non salvage title. Thing was a total peice of junk, and when I got it I had never driven a manual transmission, and the cluster didnt work [was a 10amp fuse I spent a week hunting down threw wire diagrams] so my first 40 miles were done blind with very little experience in shifting or rev matching, 2 weeks later I quit stalling at stops, 2 years later I broke the clutch release plate and only having 1 car and a need to go to work to make enough to fix the issue, I taught myself to float shift, first month of that was a nightmare of highway stop and go, engine on engine off trying to never stop so I didnt need to turn off the engine and turn it back on in 1st launching from a stop every time. Now I float shift nearly every gear gearing up or down. I can float shift at redline or under 3k rpm. 2nd is tricky and floating 1st to 2nd doesn't help performance at all, and I've lost a couple races because I couldn't clutch 1st to 2nd. But since I've started driving 2zzge cars I've beaten, mustang's v6 and v8's, Camaros, f bodys and the new models, challenger and chargers, 3.5s are easy, the hemis are alot harder to beat and all of those cars whip my ass in top speed, but can never pass me below 100 mph. The only one that did was a challenger r/t cause the no clutch 1st to 2nd delay, then I chased him about 20 miles at 110 staying within 2 car lengths the entire time. But unfortunately she succumbed to a busted valve lift seat which completely destroyed the intake cam in the 5 minutes I had to drive to finish the journey. And since I cant just drop 3I into a motor, especially a motor in a busted up body (fenders and front bumper were held on with 4 bolts and zip ties, and would wave as I passed people lol, which was probably why I couldn't ever get over 120mph.)
    My new 03 vibe gt has an upgraded fuel system, I dont know what the injectors are but their bright yellow and I've yet to see stock yellow injectors, it came with a 2019 1st place super modified plaque ontop of the battery and I think it has an upgraded exhaust system too. My scan gauge says it's at around 250 hp N/A but that was before I clogged the lift screen after using it a couple times. the story was it wad the guys grand daughters car, so she probably never used lift. I could have broke the lift bolts which would be a pain in the dick to fix but will happen soon and a few other things are dragging and making it sluggish so I'm not sure of its 0-60 time, but I have noticed lift tries to kick in at exactly 6k rpm when its suppose to be at 62 or 6300 in that year model so it seems promising. But for 800$, im fully in love with this one.
    I've had so much fun in, and enjoy driving the 2zzge so much that unless they make another better engine with the vvtL-I platform, a manual trans, and operates closely to the 2zz, I'm hoping I'll have enough money and time to fully rebuild a few of them so I can still be driving a 2zz car 30-40 years from now, which at that point it would be a 40-60 year old engine.

  • @Witnesswhiteness
    @Witnesswhiteness 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've noticed about a .4 to 1 second difference in pulls in my 2zz vibe gt between having a cat, and it having blown itself off. Seems like unless you have a turbo on it, straight pipe makes slightly less power than having the cat on, even if the cat is clogged and overly restricted. I was thinking about a very slight restriction cone just before a glass pack then testing, removing, and shaving small amounts off till it has just enough restriction to make enough back pressure for exhaust scavenging but still have alot of free flow in it. If anyone has tried to slip a cone to restrict exhaust flow and managed to get it to run correctly I'd greatly appreciate any information. Nothing is better than the crack of lift hitting on a straight pipe but theres not much sense losing a second off my 0-60 just to be loud

    This sounds good IMO I prefer a straight pipe exhaust on sports cars or a sporty car like a Celica and imo this isn't ricer, Ricer would be doing unnecessary things to your car to make it look like a race car even though its slow as fuck but these Celica's I've saw have hit up to 145mph or more coming from the lil 4cyl and people think 4cyl are slow but ain't true at all I've saw some lil 4cyl beat a lot of V8s especially American V8s but of course everyone knows that American Muscle weighs a lot more than a Japanese Manufactured USDM car in most cases

      I would just get a good sized resonator. I just added a 10" vibrant resonator and it helped a lot. A resonated midpipe would work wonders. Then throw a magnaflow muffler in at the back, typically going to have a deeper sound than other brands.

    • @THEjameshaner
      @THEjameshaner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Rafaellasvegas
      @Rafaellasvegas 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have much knowledge on this, but I'll look into that. Would a full exhaust system still work pretty well, considering my cat is still there? Since I dont know much about how to weld or anything concering piping and what not.. What do you think? I saw that there's a few full on exhaust systems out there for the celicas that can give you a better deeper tone? Or course.. It'll probably be more expensive eh?

    • @THEjameshaner
      @THEjameshaner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Rafaellasvegas It really depends. I bought each piece individually and had a local shop put it in. De-cat and installing everything at once (resonator, magnaflow glass pack muffler and black widow chambered muffler, full 2.5" piping) cost me about $400, parts and labor. Performance gains are much better with a full header back, so I would say doing a full exhaust set up is better than buying a bolt in solution. However, if you leave the cat and go with a bolt on system, I would do the magnaflow catback. It costs about $550, doesn't require any welding. Don't go cheap on aftermarket catback though, it won't last

    • @THEjameshaner
      @THEjameshaner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rafaellasvegas ALSO.. our GTS models are 2.5" to cat and then shrink down to about 2"-2.25" behind the cat. So if you want to stay CARB legal, I would get a 2.5" high flow cat, have a shop weld in an O2 bung, full 2.5" piping behind the cat with a 12" long resonator and magnaflow chambered muffler. Should cost about $500-$600 and will yield some tangible gains compared to a basic cat back system

      No go on the stock one. New exhaust is 2.5", stock resonator is smaller. I did put on a vibrant resonator after this video, but still lots of rasp. Planning on doing a resonated midpipe to tone it down more

    Could you shoot flames? 🤔😂

      I can try 😂 I've gotten some pretty nasty backfires, but idk if there's enough fuel to get visible flames. Bigger injectors and a tune, anything is possible

    Why not just do it yourself? A cat should take like 30 minutes to put back in. Especially in a Toyota

      All welded in. Bolts on at header, then solid pipe all the way to the muffler
