How to install Windows 7 on modern hardware (Works on Z390 up to the latest Z690 chipset!)

  • Hello everyone! In this video, I will show you how to install Windows 7 on a modern system in 2022. Thanks to the great community of Windows 7 users, this is very possible, even in a time when hardware does not have official Windows 7 drivers anymore. The good news is certain hardware (even today!) does have drivers, like NVIDIA's RTX 30 series cards. Sadly, the 40 series does not, but hopefully someone will figure out how to make them work on windows 7 as well. Wherever possible, it is good to use official drivers (for the obvious security and stability reasons), but the good news is that for the most part, these modded drivers are usually safe. It is still a good measure to check them with a virus scanner first, however.
Prior to installing windows 7 on your modern PC, you first should make sure that CSM is enabled and secure boot is disabled in the BIOS. Also, typically you are better off going with an ASUS or MSI motherboard vs. using a Gigabyte or AsRock board, due to ACPI issues, in which you would get a 0xA5 BSOD. I am not sure about NZXT boards, as I have never had one, nor can I find anything about using Windows 7 on one (at least the Z690 ones in particular.)

(Modded Windows 7 driver for Intel HD/UHD graphics which should work for up to Z370/Z390, not sure if it will work for anything newer than Z390. You need to apply the registry file first and restart before installing. However, since this is an unofficial driver, I would recommend just getting a cheap dedicated GPU, such as the GT 710 or GeForce 210 even if you don't need anything powerful, just so you can use an official Windows 7 driver).

(Pre-made Windows 7 Professional x64 ISO with these updates and the USB3 patch)
You should not need SMBus drivers, or any other drivers for your machine to work at this point.
With all of these steps done, you should have a fully working Windows 7 install on your modern PC! Enjoy!
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are 2 things I would like to point out in this video:
    1. At around 15:05, I was talking about the NVME hotfix, and I said you need 7-Zip to extract it as it came as a 7z file. You really could use anything, it doesn't have to necessarily be 7-Zip.
    2. At the end of the video, I was going to show you guys the "finished product", with the GT 710's drivers installed, but the 32GB SSD that I was using ran out of space as I was downloading the drivers, so that's why I couldn't show it to you.

@@raincatchfire My build was pretty expensive. Old or not! For a windows 7 build, you *can* build whatever and do what Elvis showed us, but it doesn't work for everyone. I built my daughter a KILLER Windows 7 PC. It's a 6700k system with a GTX 1660 TI with a Z-170 motherboard and it smokes every game she's thrown at it. 6TH gen Intels are the last *supported* Windows 7 CPU's and you could go up to a Z-270 Motherboard which was the latest Motherboard that supported Windows 7 (kinda). I went with a Z-170 though cause *some* people had probs trying to get Windows 7 to work on the Z-270's. I'd go on Ebay and start looking for those parts I mentioned or..... you could go a little newer and build an AMD system. I think the Ryzen family still supported Windows 7, but I'm not totally sure on that. I more familiar with Intel. The Z-170 Mobo's and 6TH Gen Intels came out when Windows 7 was current, so those are GUARENTEED to work with Windows 7 and still play all the current games. *Some* games you may need to turn down the graphic settings a bit, but not enough to ruin the experience. Just incase you're still interested in the build I'm currently working on, It's a I5 9600K, (There wasn't much difference between the 9TH Gen Intel I5, and I7), so I rolled with the I5. (which I will overclock to 5 Ghz so it doesn't bottleneck my 2080 TI. My Motherboard is a Z-390 and my graphics card is a 2080 TI. Plus a lot of other expensive High quality Corsair parts. Hence the Expensive part of the build. (besides my GPU) Any other questions feel free to ask. Good luck man!

Just finished getting Win 7 running on a Core I5 13600KF - Z790. Went down a little bit of a motherboard rabbit hole with this but found a Z790 that works. ASRock Z790 Pro RS/D4. I went through two MSI boards; 6 and 790, neither of which worked due to the non compliant ACPI bios (BSOD on boot) and a gigabyte Z690 that worked but did not have a PS/2 port. USB3 just would not install or work in windows itself no matter what drivers I slip-streamed into the ISO.
System Runs good; very stable. Tested a few games. Assassin's Creed is using all the cpu cores to some degree or another. Didn't even hit 50c when testing. Device manager shows (!) 4 PCI devices (probably M.2 - No NVME driver install attempts yet), one PCI simple Comm Controller, SM Bus and two unknown devices.
Forgot to add: Video card is an Nvidia EVGA RTX 2060. I will get a 3 series when the prices come down in about 2-3 years - lol. I wish people would stop spending $1500 for cards. Prices would drop faster.

Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility. It actually installs on windows 7 which was unexpected. I'm testing the Intel update manager to see if it solves the 4 remaining. I think the memory controller are the unknowns so may never have luck there. I tried to run windows experience but it can't bench the memory. lol
This is pretty cool; getting this far on a Z790 board. Crazy.

That is great to hear! The problem with those slipstream tools is that it will just integrate the Intel USB3 drivers, that only worked with Skylake to *maybe* Coffee Lake. Anything after the Z370 series you will definitely need the backported XHCI driver stack from Windows 8, that is used for any USB3 controller.

@@himmelskibet Yea I'm currently runnin with a Z390 + 9900K so it's good to know why those other tools didn't work out. I really want to have windows 7 on my Dell laptop and i tried to install it but when i boot your pre-made version, it doesn't work, shows an error and gives me options to restore, and when i try to install it from inside Windows 10, it starts installing but at the first restart it shows the option "continue with installation" in the boot menu (along with my Windows 10) and when i click, it gets stuck on the windows logo. Is there anything specific as a driver which i have to add to the installation ISO? I have DELL Vostro 3500, with an Intel i5 processor (11th generation), I would really appreciate any help.

Unfortunately, some motherboards (particularly Gigabyte ones as far as I know) have the ACPI issue, In my case, I have an ASUS board, which is much better for legacy support typically than Gigabyte boards are. There could also be a modded ACPI driver somewhere online for Windows 7, but for the time being, it is best to get an Asus board, unless you have one already.
