What hardware do you need to build a TrueNAS System - TrueNAS Buying Guide

  • SpaceRex goes over what to look for when building out a TrueNAS NAS System. TrueNAS is a very high performant NAS operating system that uses the power of ZFS to store massive amounts of data. ZFS can be both an incredibly powerful filesystem that gives great performance to spinning hard drives, however if you do not have enough RAM it can actually be much slower than a standard file system.

    Thank you for making this video!
    We encourage anyone who is new to TrueNAS or ZFS in general to take a look at this video. Awesome work!

    Great video!
    Kindly make an updated video for TrueNas Scale too, I beleive most of the items will be the same but with a few exceptions such as a requirement of having a separate SSD only storage pool only to run scale apps (this is what TrueCharts recommends).

    HI,
    1. Can I add cache or dedup SSD drives after creating the pool?
    2. Mirror of two SSD 2TB SATA drives is good enough for cache? Or only aim for NVME m.2 drives?
    3. Is it a good idea to have mirror SSD-s SATA for dedup?
    4. Raidz-1 of 3 discs or Raidz-2 of 5 discs (14 or 16 or 18TB discs) with SATA SSD cache and SATA SSD dedup? Or data discs will be enough?

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. Yes you can add them later
      2. You don’t need a mirror for L2ARC, and I would go for NVMe or just not have it
      3. You would not need a mirror as it’s all recreate able data
      4. Those should have decent performance

    ECC RAM is often highly recommended

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      While recommended it’s also in many ways over kill. ZFS actually performs better then other file systems against a flipped bit in non-ecc systems due to the checksums.

    This is the exact video I needed, looking to upgrade a R730XD but needed a proper Controller. One quick question, does the HBA330 allow for mixed Disk types? (SATA drive pool + SAS drive pool?)

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should as its just an HBA, but I would double check with the stat page just in case

    First of I’m asking you this because I think your capable. Most dell servers come with a SD card reader for flashing. Can it be repurposed to automatically download data into my truenas? Example: I go take a bunch of pictures and I get home put my SD CARD in the slot and it automatically starts uploading to my NAS

    Truenas core doesn't like realtek network adapters fyi. The drivers that come with it are pretty old. That's the only hardware compatibility issue with it I've experienced.
    Truenas scale seems to have no issue with them

    Does the HBA card need to be flashed to IT mode?

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So if it’s an HBA card it does not have to be. What you are talking about is a RAID card. So some RAID cards can be flashed to IT mode

    • @ericyost5287
      @ericyost5287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SpaceRexWill Thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure because I see others flashing the hba cards to it mode. So wasn't sure why they are doing it when they don't have to be.

    I wanted to make a laptop server. So basically this is telling me I can't use a laptop with truenas/zfs? Unfortunate but I understand the limitation. Guess I have to build a pc.

    All in all you should stay away from smr all together. I believe wd has a 6 terabyte red drive that is smr.

    • @SpaceRexWill
      @SpaceRexWill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100% agree, SMR is fine for something like an external hard drive that you just dump data to, but for a NAS SMR can really slow you down
