Comanche Warriors vs. Texas Buffalo Hunters : Quanah Parker & The Battle Of Adobe Walls

  • In 1874, as the buffalo herds that they depend on are systematically annihilated, the tribes of the Southern Plains are becoming increasingly angry at the men killing their buffalo. These men, the buffalo hunters, are often in their 20’s and with little other economic opportunity. They are a dirty, unkempt and hard-fighting lot.
Now, after being convinced by a conniving medicine man that they must band together and rid their homelands of the white man once and for all, a large band of Comanche, Cheyenne, Kiowa and Arapahoe warriors descend upon a remote outpost on the plains of North Texas.
The place is known as Adobe Walls, and the buffalo hunters who live there will soon be in the fight of their lives. Quanah Parker, legendary chief of the Comanche will lead the attack. What follows become one of the most legendary battles in Old West history.
Don’t miss this tale of greed, violence and vengeance only on History At The OK Corral : Home Of History’s Greatest Shootouts and Showdowns.

A very good perfomance, I read a lot about, and I mean a lot but I like the details you give about the behave of Hanrahan inside and the roof post. It's was written in a german novel, The summer when the buffalo died, but I don't think, it made it for english...the number of the killed warriors was not that big but the took it more in heart and soul...Ishatai was for Quanah Parker what was Tenks'kwata for the great Tecumseh. You let out the handful of Prairie Apache which People was always with them, at least the books said so. The scalp of the dog was danced like a man's...Guess Dixons nickname before, I enjoyed a loss of input here about a old wisecrack saying it's never done well for horseback Indians to take on walls. It was the second step for the Nemen'na into the surrendering..God's Blessings from Northern Germany Ludwig.

    Nice work.
The title is something of a misnomer.
The buffalo hunters were mainly from further north
where they had hunted the buffalo to near extinction.
When they retreated they did not go deeper into Texas.
    They went to Dodge City.
The Indians had a treaty protecting their buffalo from
the hide hunters. There is nothing glorious in the hide
hunters objectives. They could get $2 for every hide,
and they acted along those lines.
One of the men in the walls, shot himself to death
by accident. The Adobe Walls is a lonesome place
even on the anniversary of the fight. When I was there,
    nobody else was there.

There's actually a good book out about Billy Dixon, the Life of Billy Dixon, l read it a few years ago, he was an interesting man. The Sharps he used for the famous shot was supposidly 1500 yds, he had borrowed a big .50, his rifle was .45 calibre. In the 70s l lived on a section of the 6666 Ranch, the Dixon Creek branch down on the Canadian River that was by the battle site, l developed an interest in the history of the region. In Lonesome Dove, when Gus rescued Lori from Blue Duck and his gang, they took refuge at the old fort.

The Comanche were never good at attacking fortified positions + laughably bad at sieges, which is why they almost never tried these type of attacks. During the 1800s, it’s estimated the entire Comanche population was a mere 13,000, but because they were able to move so fast it made them appear more numerous leading to estimations of their population as more than 100k at the time. They excelled in the open and in ambushes.

That's a photo of a bar in San Francisco there are no photos of the bar at Adobe Walls that I am aware of.
The native Americans didn't believe the white man could kill all the buffalo because they had seen herds that took four days to pass.
An aspect that someone could expand on with a video is the North American bison were saved from extinction by a white man and a native American both had a few and together they had breeding stock.
I had the opportunity to have a buffalo burger while traveling through Wyoming one time and I highly recommend it to everyone who's interested.
