The real question should be this.
Is Cortana in love with John?
But more importantly, is John capable of love in the first place?
Cortana is programmed to show emotions. She feels embarrassment, anger, happiness, sadness, etc. So it's highly likely that Cortana is very much capable of falling in love.
John is at the far end of the spectrum. Since day one, John has been trained to do one thing. To be a soldier. (Or his case, a sailor. Master Chief is a naval rank.) However, with Cortana, John has been exposed to certain emotions. So while he might fall in love with Cortana, John might not be capable of realizing he is.

I’ll back you on the chief side of things but not on Cortana.
Disregarding what is likely to be the logic plague, has turned her into, I don’t be believe Cortana to be just some synthetic AI. For one we have to remember that Cortana was made from Halsey’s DNA, her cells and one of the only 2 we are aware of this making her unique and in a sense special.
Secondly no AI has been recorded (at least to my knowledge) to have survived more than 7 years without developing rampancy where as Cortana has made it 8 and was only starting to really experience it, it just quickly developed. Being as she had the data from installation 4, and substantial amount of forerunner data, and her little talk with the gravemind she’s been through more than most thus pushing her to the limits, and had she not would have likely lived much longer than that.
Third she has been through way more traveling with than any AI has ever, this creating a unique experience and thus creating a unique individual.
Forth regardless of how well programmed an AI is or how well she might be able to learn, you can never 100% mimic emotions. That’s just simple logic. Cortana has shown true emotions, especially towards chief, not just simulated emotions coming of strands of code within her programming.
It is common knowledge she has developed, and grown through her time with chief. And being as advanced and experiencing all she has, it’s not far fetched that she could have even evolved to a higher level. One where her programming isn’t simply that, but that become a soul, something that only true living things have. She has morals, she’s has freedom, she’s shown to think for herself and to feel what she wants to feel. Halsey may be one of the most incredible minds in the cosmos but I don’t believe that she could have ever made someone like Cortana. Cortana’s feelings are her, and like are they are real feelings.
Joshua Preston no a less known fact is human high lvl AI (humans stuff has nothing on forerunner stuff though cortana is almost at contender class constructs) now to explain she is infact the neurological copy of dr.hasley which is why she can feel emotions

There is no doubt they love each other. First, the deep affection that Dr. Halsey had for John 117 was established. She even “found him attractive.” Cortana was created from Halsey’s mind. When it came time to choose a Spartan to be mated with, Cortana picked John without hesitation. She picked him because he was special. He had an undefinable quality that for lack of a better word, she called “luck.” She picked him because he is a winner.
In the HALO 6 trailer, she says, “I knew we’d be good together.”
For all intents and purposes the Chief is a middle aged virgin. No woman, no family. The most significant relationship in the Chief’s life is his relationship with Cortana.
When a woman or a man gets to you, it is often said they’ve gotten into your head or under your skin. Cortana has quite literally done both to the Chief.
Cortana isn’t some fucking Siri. She is a human consciousness. After the moment she is brought online, she becomes a fork of that consciousness, with new experiences, shaping a different person. She is certainly capable of love. Though referred to constantly as an A.I., she is not. Nothing artificial about her. She is a copy of a human mind. She is not simply a construct as indicated by GuiltySpark. She is a human mind, with all the good and bad that go with that. A completely insane invention, in my humble opinion.
I know that if I had a female consciousness living in my head continuously who was as apparently fond of me as Cortana is of John, I would begin to develop feelings for her. I say female, because in my life I haven’t been very lucky with women. I notice that I miss their presence in my life. Not sex, but the feminine aspects of the way they see the world. I can see very easily now the Chief could both love and be in love with Cortana.
For him she is friend, mother, lover, all in one hyper sexual visual, constantly making cute remarks in his head. Add to that all the death cheating adventure they been on together. They couldn’t possibly be closer.
The Chief demonstrates repeatedly that he will move mountains for Cortana. He knows she is a unique human persona. Together they have that deep psychological kind of love that very few of us will ever experience. I’m sure they’d like a physical relationship were it possible. In HALO 4, when she becomes hard light, she touches him and says she’d always dreamed of doing it.
Then there is the Forerunner aspect. It was indicated that their ultimate creation (John and Cortana’s) and pairing was somehow planned by the Forerunners.
Essentially HALO might be one of the greatest love stories in gaming ever, above everything else.
Bottom line, if they aren’t in love, then either there is no such thing as love, or they are in something much greater, much deeper, much more wonderful than love.
Also, the Chief shows little or no affection or consideration for anyone else. Not like he does for Cortana. After she dies, the Captain of the Autumn tells the Chief that he cannot imagine what the Chief is going through, acknowledging that he recognizes the depth their relationship had. Cortana and the Chief were each a part of the whole, never sure which was the machine and which was human.
Heck I even love Cortana and when she appeared to have died in HALO 4, I couldn’t see playing another game of shoot the bad guys, without Cortana.
I completely agree. At the center of the Halo saga, it's been Master Chief and Cortana. I can't wait to see what 343 has in mind for their relationship.

I am using artificial purely in the sense that an artificial intelligence implies it is an artifice that is not naturally occurring and would not exist without a creator; IE: a statue of a human is not a non-artifice simply because it is copied from something real. An artifice can possess sentience like Cortana, but Cortana is still an artifice, and therefore artificial, because she was created.

Just get Halsey and Anders and Exuberant Witness to use available Forerunner medical technology that was once used by the Librarian to modifier the composers.
REVERSE-Composing the Created would eliminate the Created threat and then you can take them into custody for their betrayals.

So, I've only ever played Halo 4 but I payed attention to the relationship they had prior to and after Halo 4. I may have missed it but are the AI's considered alive in the first place? I'm not sure if that topic has ever been covered. Sure these AI's are extremely advanced, Governor Sloan is obviously agitated by fire team Osiris' presence and Roland is pissed off at Lasky and Halsey for their arrogant position about Cortana, but should we classify them as living beings?
In Halo 5 Cortana's position would suggest that AI's are alive "Only the created are its masters." If they are then we can consider if AI's can truly "feel" emotions. As they can integrate with spartans' brains, is what Cortana experiencing actually a digital imitation of what John is biologically capable of, or is it the real deal? Or is Cortana uniquely capable of genuine emotions because Halsey used her own mind as a template?
Personally, I think Cortana and John are in love with one another. Cortana goes to great lengths to get John to Genesis and into her Cryptum before she initiates her Guardians. If you listen to how Cortana says goodbye but close your eyes, I'd bet money you'd think that Cortana is genuinely heartbroken over what she has to do. Then when Exubrant wrenched that Cryptum from Cortana's Guardian she screamed out for John. She sounds like someone who's trying to keep their love one safe.

Yeah, they love eachother. I don't know if romantically. But, I'll say Cortana is Chief's closest friend. All those battles and she, ironically, kept him slightly human with the occasional friendly banter. You really saw Chief's humanity and personality with Cortana. That is why Chief is so anxious to get Cortana fixed because he'll be losing his true nature. Literally, the way 343i explored thier relationship, under the circumstances of Cortana's rapancy, is the reason why Halo 4 is accepted by even the old guard.
So true. I'd call myself an 'old guard' halo fan and I really enjoyed Halo 4's campaign because of how much they explored Chief and Cortana's relationship.

I’d say Kelly is his closest friend and Kelly is the only women John has ever said was beautiful I think and he grew up with her from 6 years old and Chief knew Cortana for like a couple months because he frozen in cryo sleep for four years doesn’t count as know her that long because he was frozen

I would say there are strong hints of a more intimate relationship, but I would certainly say it is non-sexual. It is two beings who love each other for who they are, not what they are. More of an emotional attachment than a physical one, to put it in other words. The more meaningful kind.

In the beginning of the mission, all of blue team talks about how chief has been pushing himself harder than since academy, while not knowing it's about cortana, at the same time, for fans wants to fire the rings and put John in the sphere to save him.

This just hurts because of course they do. Halo 5 should've been Chief going rogue to recover the last composer to bring cortana back somehow. And if they reeeeeally wanted that created arc well then when he gets there maybe he communicates with her and finds out she's already done her own thing and gone insane. Remember kids, it's about the journey, not the destination.
Swear to god though, I could write a better story than Halo 5 and that's a fact.

Yes, I think that they do love each other. In Halo 3 when John was talking to Cortana as he was rescuing her he was kneeling.It was dangerous to do due to the Flood being around. Also he waited to ask about the index until after he new that she was going to make it. But to me the scene that confirmed his feelings for her was when he refuse the asshole Captains orderto hand Cortana over. However if 343 has Cortana doing what she's doing in Halo 5 so she can get into the Chief's 'pants', or in his case his armor I will be VERY pissed! If they steering then for a 'romantic' relationship then Halo 6 will end with Cortana not only losing but having to live with losing John, until he comes back... eventually.

I would say they have a great relationship as friends. But I it's pretty obvious they both have feelings for each other. I say this because they have been through thick and thin, hell and back, and more. But they just don't exactly know how to express it! And also John is just not human enough yet, not until the war is over or until he is set free... But they definitely have some kind of connection beyond friends and that part is growing...
Halsey has this kinda mother like feeling to John, Cortana is like a Demi Halsey; Cortana continues Halsey’s love and since she is young, made that love love instead of mother’s love; so I guess she does love him and chief being psychologically immature, loves Cortana back.

It's clear they do. The end of HALO 4 all but shows this. Chief loves her. Deeply. But it's like a mother/son love. Not romantic at all. But he loves her. More than I think anything other than his duty to protect humanity. But for Chief the priorities are-
1) Protect humanity at all costs
2) Protect Cortana
3) Finish the mission
4) Protect USMC personnel

It’s not abnormal for AIs or Spartans to fall in love. Look at Sif and Mack from Halo: Contact Harvest, Otto and Margaret from Black Team, Fred and Veta Lopis, Tom and Lucy from S-III Beta Company.

Sif and Mack are two AI's on Harvest during the first contact with the covenant. Mack often flirts with Sif and she likes it (she says that she doesn't, but she lies) In the end they say each other that they are in love.
Lucy and Tom are Spartan III's who made a mission together and fell in love.
But I don't know the other two. But that confirms, that AI's and Spartans cann fall in love.

Well they definitely love each other in the sense of family/friendship. Growing up, Chief grew a close attachment to his fellow Spartans, and always felt bad when one of them died, but when it came to Cortana, not only was she there, constantly in his head, helping him on his missions, and was with him during Halo 1-4, which were some of his biggest and most stressful missions, but she was also his last friend. Everyone else, as far as he knew, had died. From her perspective, she has the emotions of a human, as she's been made from not only a living brain, but that of one of the most intelligent humans in history. She's also felt very protective over Master Chief, ever since she discovered what he'd gone through as a kid. However, nothing in the series has implied romantic interest.
I've seen the SFM porn, and it's pretty good. So I'd say they're in a nice relationship

I believe in a way that John 117 and Cortana do love one another. They've been in each other's heads, both figuratively and literally. They've saved the galaxy three times, and even though now that they're on opposite sides, they still have a connection with one another. You can tell in Halo 4 how emotional Chief was and the love he has for Cortana by being committed to saving her, even when they said their goodbyes. His love for her can be seen in Halo 5 when Chief was rubbing the back of his helmet where the AI port is located, and when he was trying to convince Cortana to stand down from taking control of the galaxy.
Love this storyline. Really bummed me out to see how they did Cortana in the newer games.

Jesus, there needs to be a movie directed the same way the cutscenes are for the franchise. There are so many stories in Halo Lore that deserve movies, but a good Halo movie is well overdue.
As far as the love thing goes I would say Halo 1 and most of 2 it is the getting to know/friend stage. At the end of 2 through 4 is more likely they love each other or at least she loves him. In 5 Chief thinks she is crazy and she needs some help.

But Halo 5 also show's their love. Chief tries to rescue her even if she's infected with the logic-plague. The scene were he is traped in that blue field shortly before she put's him in the kryptum says it all. And Cortana is trying to ceep Chief with her due to all costs. So, yep, they love each other.

You don't realize that for John, that's as close to saying "I love you" as he can get.
He was abducted; trained; beat; forced to kill other children; fight the insurrectionist; fight the Covenant; and watch everyone he ever cared for die.
John and Cortana do love each other, love doesn't have to be dime novel love.
Asking if John and Cortana love each other is like asking if Deckard and Rachael love each other.
In the books Cortana is a clone of Halsey's psyche, who also evidently cares for John. His original team was also added in Halo 5, so there is some return to the lore. This love-story plotline does look likely but it's also a bit uncomfortable in Halo and cheesy. Chief wasn't supposed to have a personality, since he's a power fantasy.
The logic plague is also an interesting theory. Whatever happens, I'd prefer Cortana to be mad rather than bad.
I wasn't a fan of Halo5 but Halo4 was... interesting. Bungie are clearly the better game developers in terms of game-design and narrative.
What if Cortana some how becomes HUMAN?! there's evidence proving the composer was having problems bringing someone back from the Digital Realm to the living. "They became Abominations of their former self's "- the Librarian in Halo4 cutscene. So it's a long shot but with all the A.I. s they figure out to become human. Becoming a bigger threat to flood.
Having played through the whole series so far, I can't do more than speculate on high grounds that Cortana and John have a romantic attraction to each other, though I don't think they realise it that much. John certainly knows that without Cortana he feels empty and desperately tries to get her back, heavily shown not only in Halo 4 but also Halo 5, in various situations. However, I believe the biggest proof lies in that old Halo 5 reveal trailer, where you see his hood fall down. Why? Because he holds Cortana's chip as a memento.
I think that Cortana loves and KNOWS she loves John, but John loves her too, but since he is partially indoctrinated (he isn't fully, since you can clearly see multiple times that he doesn't listen to orders blindly) he can't recognise these feelings, nor does he know what they are. I think in Halo 6, this topic will be fully expanded on. And seriously, even though it's total bullshit, I still count on Cortana turning human. I actually think it might be the only cure for her madness, since as an AI she has a time limit of only 3 years of guaranteed sanity, as a human...well....Forerunners have tech that can make a Living being into AI and vice versa, you do the math.
A little late leaving a comment, but I believe John does love Cortana because at the end scene in halo 4, Johns late word he says to Cortana before she fades away is “wait” but the way he said it is what gave it away. At that very moment he realized, I believe that he had a connection, maybe not like a lovey love but there was love between then.
I've always seen John-117 and Cortana being "mind" and "body". After all, John is perhaps the best representation of human biology in the Halo universe, while Cortana was the sharpest "human" mind in the Halo universe.
I would also argue that anyone that has been in that kind of relationship knows that its the most powerful kind of bond, and that there is enough there for it to be called love

Let's remember, Cortana it's made of a matrix from the brain of Dr. Halsey, what if the emotions (or something like that) from Dr. Halsey pass to Cortana. In Halo 5 and the Fall of Reach, Dr. Halsey show some kind of “worried” and favoritism for John like a mother for her son. Maybe it could be that... or maybe it’s a “platonic love” like you said.
i dont think cortanas reaction to "wake me when you need me" is sad, i think its shes surprised that chief feels in any way similar. the exchange always felt just like a different way of them saying that they mean a lot to each other. so chief saying "wake me when you need me" i think is him trying to show that she means a lot to him. and shes surprised that he feels that way about her, or even anyone.
i really cried at the ending of Halo 4 when Cortana touches master chief for the first time ;)
They care for each other immensely but not in a romantic way.
That's what I was thinking.
Personally the only person I could see Chief falling in love with romantically would be Kelly. They're already about as close of friends as they could get, and Kelly is still extremely human for a Spartan-II showing a wide assortment of emotions that other Spartans do not.
And with Chief becoming slightly more normalized and human like in the past couple games it would be one of the easiest assumptions to be made.
