Man I just heard this noise today on my 08 Silverado on start up. I knew it was in the serpentine belt somewhere, but you just pinpointed me to it! Thanks for the video!
The water pump is right up there with timing belts/chains, tires, and brakes, all things you should never skimp on or ignore for any reason unless you want monumental problems later.
I had one shop fix my radiator. Then the water pump went out. But they never said anything about it when I took it back. All they said was that my engine was fried. They didn't even look. Took to abother mechanic and he realized it needed a new water pump and they flushed the system again as they blamed it on stop leak. I knew they were lying when they said that lol. Ive never allowed anyone to put that in my vehicle. Im just a female. I hardly kbow anything but I can sense when something is fishy. They also left wires lose on the back of my engine and the power on my vehicle was low. Anyways my car is running great. Thank God for some honest mechanics in this world. If anyone can put this into mechanical terms for me I want to leave this company a review so other people know to stay away.

Hahaha my local mechanic tried to fix this same noice coming from my Ford Fiesta by replacing the clutch… didn’t worked 😂😂 well now I now what it is and I can fix it myself.
@@manyord7089 we’ll all be forced to go electric sooner rather than later so I rather not until the time comes. I rented a few electric cars and I didn’t really enjoy the process of charging a car.

Might as well replace idler pulley , belt, tensioner pulley , thermostat , water pump and all hoses unless any of those are new .. if ur pushing 100,000 on original equipment .. ur gone be replacing all ur antifreeze so just get it all so u don’t have to replace it again later got a simple hose . My grand Cherokee just did this with 98,500 mile and I thought it was gonna be tensioner but discovered water pump was issue after getting it home where I could see what was Going on.. my water pump was tracking way worse and a lot more wiggly than this one .Wife woulda kept driving it til it died .
I had to replace that twice on my lib. The first time it straight up seized. The second time it did the wobble dance that you showed us. I also swapped the tensioner each time.
I just bought a classic mustang and I heard a slight growling sound from the water pump. I changed it out before it got to bad. I don’t want to take chances with it going out.
You're absolutely right !! Similar with caravans... similar issues. And yes with the tensioner, they will break apart in your hands. Man knows his stuf !!
If anyone is wondering it would need to be replaced is because the internal bearings are worn out causing the shaft and pulley to walk back and forth..
I ignored an idler pulley squeal for a while. Thought it was just cold start up issue (dead of winter). Nah, turns out the bearing was indeed bad and it catastrophically blew up. Imagine the most cartoon metallic ping. Open the hood to fine ball bearing sitting on the top of the intake manifold

Those were the exact words I used “lit up like a Christmas Tree.” If you’re saying it was a cable under your seat that cause it, that may be her reason as well because the driver’s side squeaks and bounces as she’s driving it. Excuse me but I see a bolrhead and the bolt is not turning when he moved the idler pulley. That does not look like a water pump it looks like an idler pulley with a bad bearing.
I had engine knock on my 5.0 that increased with acceleration and deceleration and gave a more “clack” sound. Eventually the rods blew through the block about halfway towards redline. If you’re gunning it the way you are and the engine is still alive I doubt it’s knocking. Sounds good though.
Man I’ve been hearing this for like a year now guess I’ll have to look at it after I figure out why my car always smells like burning oil and that annoying flashing light on the dash
@@Spartan33333 I took it to a local mechanic I know; it was $150 out the door. I could have done it myself but it needed other work done so I just let him take care of it. The part itself is less than $100 and it’s relatively simple to fix.
Water pump has bearings on the belt wheel that eventually go bad over time from the constant rotation (same as wheel bearings). They get noisy cause the bearings lose their round shape from wear and can't rotate smoothly anymore. Tension wheel (the wheel that keeps your belts tight) bearings will eventually go bad too. Get real noisy.
Ohoh bought a 07 Explorer recently. Codes gave me multiple mis fires, so I thought it was Sparkplugs, or Coils. But I also get a burning smell thru the vents, & car & engine shake a bit. I'm wondering if it's the flywheel, happens a lot to Fords!
@@BubblesTheCat1 Very possible. Sometime strain/tension on a pulley can cause the noise. In other words, if the belt on it with tension, it could be noisey. But while you there with the belt off, start it to make sure the noise not there anymore. If not, its one of those spinning pulleys. At this point, check them all.
My liberty overhead several months after I bought it. Found debris in thermostat further investigation Found chunk of a old water pump impeller blocking water passage. I have a short on my channel.
That's very dangerous driving a car with a water pump and tensioner issues.I learned that lesson two years ago on the interstate my tensioner came loose and my brakes gave out almost causing me to crash into the guard rails at 60 mph. If you hear that screeching sound like in this video take it very seriously I replaced the water pump the tensioner and idler pulley two years ago the sound came back again so I have to to inspect it.
I think my ‘90 4Runner just took a cr@p! Heard some weird noise, next thing I know coolant is slowly dripping from the radiator cap. Off to the shop tomorrow.
I dred the old water pump change out. On one of my vehicles I'm on my fourth one. Granted I have 270,000 miles but still. One of them went bad in 8 months. The neck snapped. It was still shiny like a new nickle. I was pissed because it actually stranded me in the heat. Cars should only break down during the spring and fall.😂😂😂

Normally when it's that bad you can see a water leak, must be a really good seal and only the bearing wore out :)

At least it's not rocket science to replace the water pump like with some Hondas especially the vans where you gotta do the whole timing assembly
Listen everyone it will behoove you to fork out a little extra for the oem part from the manufacturer not a 3rd party aftermarket unit.
Once the water pump go bad and car cut off and won't cut back on ..is the motor still bad or just replace the pump and it will off ???????
At least this water pump is mounted outboard. A few are mounted internally and driven directly by the timing chain (or belt).
