    The cool thing about these machines is that they are designed to be serviced and rebuilt if necessary time and time again. Hardly any plastic on these things so they can last and last if you keep them from rusting out . Really cool to see it up and running!!!

    There is a brown flexible armature cleaning pad then chalk stick to use so as not to impregnate anything with a problem creating abrasive when cleaning armatures.

    Those are wonderful old machines and weld beautifully. You were lucky when it went to high RPM that it didn't sling the armature apart. Maximum RPM on a short hood is 1450. Get that tachometer and set your idle and high RPMs and download a manual from Lincoln on your R51 idler and see if you can get it working. It's worth fixing for sure

    • @matthewrandall6320
      @matthewrandall6320  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Clay did get that fixed. He welded with it quite a bit. He has since sold it and is looking for another one. It was very impressive to see that run after all the years of it sitting. The previous owner thought it had been about 30 to 40 years since it was running.

    Never seen a 200 until you tube. nice little machine. would b nice if one could fabricate some kind of electric starter for them. Would b better for the older welders lol! I have a 1956 Lincoln 300 amp generator welder. It has a industrial flat head Chrysler 6 powering it. It does have a electric starter. larger machine than the 200. the engine is independent from the generator. It has a clutch that engages and disengages the generator. I also have to clean both places on the armature same as was shown. I have the tool with the stones on each end. They may b harder to find but, maybe some electrical shops that still carry and sell out of date stuff may have one around. I think the stones works a lot better than fine emery. Emery still helps if u got nothing else.

    • @JohnSmith-le6md
      @JohnSmith-le6md 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Easy as adding 2ea 12volt batteries to start it off weld lugs.
      Uses the armature as a elect motor.
      Lincoln has the paperwork on how it's done

    Dont forget to grease the water pump's zerk.

  • @scania1982
    @scania1982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Do not wrap your thumbs around the start handle. The handle can break your thumbs. Also do not put your head near the handle's travel. That can kill you. There seems to be a zerk in that hole by the electric brushes.

      It was notched to relieve the pressure if it kicks back. Most Continentals back then we're designed that way.

      It is a resonator pipe that threads into the manifold. It and the manifold came from BW parts.

    Were you using emery cloth to clean the armatures? I have a 49 short hood I’ve been using for 20 years that quit welding at all yesterday. Suspect the exciter armature May be the problem.

    • @matthewrandall6320
      @matthewrandall6320  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, just a piece of Emery cloth. It was not welding very well and we could see that it was not making good contact when running. When we cleaned the surfaces it improved the machine greatly.

  • @matthewrandall6320

    never hand spin round and round!!! roll to TDC then jerk. Good way to get a broken arm with the round and round if it where to kick back. If does not start on a jerk something not right. I have a Lincoln 180as jerk start no problem ,,,,

    • @danieldudley8975
      @danieldudley8975 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Broken arm can definitely happen. I'm living proof of it. Tried to crank start an old tractor after I watched a guy wind milling the crank. I said let me do that your only supposed to jerk it quick. I started to push the crank down so I could jerk it up, bang!!! Kicked back snapped my arm clean break. Lessons learned the hard way haha

    • @1vester1
      @1vester1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danieldudley8975 damm was that a mag.? A mag will fire after TDC if set right or mag is bad

    • @danieldudley8975
      @danieldudley8975 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1vester1 it was actually a battery ignition or distributor. I think the guy that was wind milling it has it so pumped up with compression and raw gas that when I tried to crank it, it was like the perfect storm. You always hear old timers talk about getting your arm broke with an old hand crank. Im 29 it happened to me when I was about 23. So a word from the not so wise, if your going to grab that crank you best be thinking about what your doing😲

      Firing order is 4-1-3-2, #4 is the closes to the generator #1 is closest to the radiator if your looking at the side that has the carb. if you have the original magneto with it the cao should be numbered on the plugs. if it was converted to electric ignition then I dont know ive never messed with it.

    People who leave stuff out in the weather to rot should not be able to sell it and should be in a cage.
