    Big Picture: Commence Firing
    DVD copied by Katie Filbert. Department of Defense. Department of the Army. Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. U.S. Army Audiovisual Center. (ca. 1974 - 05/15/1984). From colonial days, marksmanship has been an American tradition. In this film presentation, television audiences will visit the Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts, established in 1794. Gunsmiths here have created the basic weapons for our fighting forces. The Armory is the small arms center of the U.S. forces. Here, are concentrated the Ordnance Corps facilities for experimental development of hand weapons, including rifles and automatic weapons--also for pilot line production. Included in "Commence Firing," is footage of the Camp Perry, Ohio World Series of Marksmanship, sponsored jointly by the National Rifle Association and the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice.

    I think it would be wonderful to have this series replay at the theater before the movie starts just to remind our children that it’s important to have ⚽️ 🏀’s

    As a documentary presenter/narrator, John Garand was an excellent small-arms designer.

    I was 21 in basic training and never fired a weapon in my life, well except my home made Zip Gun. At the rifle range I qualified as Expert.

    John Garand was originally a French-Canadian and at least the Americans were foresighted and astute enough to see the utility and value of the semi-automatic rifle that he invented.

    The most interesting I learned in this video is that John Garand had an accent like that. I had expected a basic American accent or something.

      How the Hell are you two able to spot that? What is the telling sign because I imagine seeing 2 (or 3) bodies dropping faster than the others and their chuted billowing open but can't even see that?

      @@constitution_8939 Stop the video at 14:35. Left half of the screen, 1 of them up at the top and 1 near the bottom of the screen. The white parachutes are reserves. The two guys have both their mains, and their reserves open.

    When exactly was this film produced and when was it shown/aired? I don't see that information anywhere in the description, which is very odd.

      He was from the Canadian province (state) of Quebec which is predominantly FRENCH so that's his accent- I'm from there too!

    Loading the M1 without supporting the charging handle, yet not getting Garand thumb? Witchcraft I say!

    • @bwhip

      The bolt won't strip the top round out of the clip while you're pressing down on it.

  • @tiredowalkin
    @tiredowalkin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    @16:43, again @17:4, 18:00 it appears the instructor is teaching how to get Garand Thumb?

    • @bwhip
      @bwhip ปีที่แล้ว

      You can hold the bolt back all day long, with only thumb pressure on the top round of the clip. There's no need to hold the operating handle back with the blade of your hand. Garand Thumb usually occurs when dropping the bolt on an empty chamber, not during loading.

    Best rifle in the world...what became the M14...LOL. Should have picked the T-48 FAL or AR-10.

    True John Garand was Canadian by birth but he moved to the US when he was only 7. Also the M1 is a highly overrated slightly below average service rifle. The very biased show Top Tens even ranged the M1 as 4th, not 1st, but even that's far to high for it's actual quality & performance record. It shouldn't be ranked any higher then 15th at best. My professional & well experienced backed personal opinion would rank it around 20th.
