  • In this video, I show the preparation and parts for the crank gear and pulley job that I’m doing on the 1999 Miata. I have a few parts that I have painted and reconditioned, as well as some new parts and one part that was not originally on the car, called the crank saver. I’ll make another video when I start to put it all together, but this gives you an idea of all the parts that are needed to refresh and fix a wobbly Miata crank pulley, which apparently is a common problem with these cars.

Where’d you get those crank pulley bolts? Are they still stock size? My dealership is taking forever with the getting the original ones in

We have a good local Ace hardware store. Their nuts and bolts section has a ton of options, all very well organized. These sizes are pretty basic. You should also be able to order a bag online, even off Amazon.
I don’t know if they are exactly stock length, but they’re close and they work.

Parts look great! What happened to the Corvette videos? I was really looking forward to seeing that thing buffed out. Thanks

It’s been on hold while I deal with the Miata. I’m trying to get it ready for Autocross! Plus, It’s hot AF right now and I just can’t get motivated to paint.

50 dollar replacement gear - someone used a gear pulley to take off that timing gear, and if you do it too hard, it will break off the backside "ring" that is part of the gear. That is how it has a chunk missing.

Did it fix the wobble issue?

It improved it (less wobble), but there was some at idle, which went away above about 2k. Not sure about the root cause. May have been a crank bearing, but it’s hard to know.
