  • Photographing Bears in Alaska is one of my favorite, if not my favorite trip that I do each year. Spending time with these Bears as they fish and fatten up for the winter is truly a remarkable experience, one that I look forward to every year. I'm back out with the Bears for about 2 weeks. This is a magnificent land filled with wildlife. Not only do I photograph Bears while I'm out here, but I also photograph Ptarmigan, various Shorebirds and Ducks, as well as the occasional Red Fox or Wolf. Each year, my trips out here are so vastly different from the previous years, and this year lived up to that reputation. Follow along as I spend 2 weeks alone, photographing the wonderful Bears that call this area home.
    When spending time around Bears, it's vital that you have the appropriate gear to help keep you safe and the appropriate knowledge regarding Bear behavior and camping in Bear country. Check out this video regarding this important subject: • How to stay safe in Be...

    Finally got around to watching this part 1 of the Alaska trip. Amazing. I know I wont be able to consider doing a trip like this for many years/ever, but I am happy to live vicariously through you! Cant imagine what it feels like to sit there alone in the Alaskan wilderness while watching the sunset and feeling the cold breeze after spending the day with such awesome creatures.

      Thanks man! I love it so much out there, such a great place. I'll be doing workshops out there if you're ever interested/able to join. It'd be so fun to have you out there! Thanks again, hope you're doing well!

    Another great wildlife video, Mister Jimmy. I can see why you never tire of the scenery or the bears. Just promise us that you won't get too Timothy Treadwell comfortable among those calorie craving beauties! Best wishes from Texas. 🤠

      Thank you! As comfortable as I feel around the Bears, I'm still always on high alert around them. No Treadwell experience for me 😬 Thanks again!

    The footage of the bear scratching his/her back was delicious!

    Hi Jimmy, the scenes of the fishing bears are top class. Slow motion adds a lot as you can see the expressions more clearly on the faces of the bears and allows one to see their feeding strategy. In addition the low angle of filming brings you right down to the level of the bears and the river. Well done!

      Thanks so much! I was thrilled to get the footage I did of them this year. It's always such a fun trip, can't wait to get back out with them!

    I never seem to tire of watching bears catching fish. A really fantastic spectacle made all the more special I would imagine by being alone with them in such beautiful surroundings. My guess is you have a far more enjoyable time out there than those people who go to Brooks Falls. From the videos I have seen of Brooks it appears to be more of a tourist spectacle than a wildlife encounter.
    Great video footage.

      @JimmyBreitenstein  ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't agree with you more, Robert. I could watch them fish all day long! Yeah, it really is an amazing experience, one of my favorites. You're right, Brooks is very much geared towards the more touristy crowd. I love my way of photographing these Bears, but I'm sure a lot of people would be absolutely miserable tagging along with me 😆

    Wow, some really impressive bear footage! Thanks a lot. Looks like you are a really brave backpacker: between the heavy duty tent, the bear fence, batteries, solar panel, cameras, and food for two weeks, your backpack must be really heavy.

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes, it was a very heavy bag, not one I'd want to hike with everyday. The gear is essential, though I'll be needing a new tent after this trip 😬

    I can already envision the next video. It starts with a low wide shot of a snow-covered landscape. A polar bear walks lazily across the scene in the distance. Then, a bare foot with a snowshoe-size sandal on it steps in and fills the foreground: Jimmy's here.

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      🤣🤣 that is awesome! Maybe one of these days I'll be able to do a Polar Bear video like that 😆 Apparently I need you to start scripting my videos for me, that sounded cooler than anything I've ever done, haha

    Outstanding video Jimmy, your trip to Alaska is one of the best adventures on TH-cam. I am really looking forward to the rest of the two weeks. I am curious as to what time of the year do you make this trip. The salmon are just starting to head up the river right now in our area. It has been so dry this summer the salmon are going to have a difficult journey. Thanks for sharing your incredible trip and have a great week.

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much, Keith! The timing varies slightly each year, but it's usually late summer sometime. It was such a fun year out there, different, but still loads of fun. My 2nd year going out there was really dry, like you mentioned your area is this year. The Salmon definitely had a difficult time getting up the river, but I was still able to get some really fun images that year. I wish you the best in your adventures!

    Jimmy, you are by far my favorite wildlife photographer in (or on) the World Wide Web.
    It's not so much your pictures (they are by all means great) it's more about you're way of telling your stories and most of all it's your "philosophy" and how you take on the wild that get me hooked and make me eager to watch every episode you post.
    Best regards Conny a college based on the Åland Islands / Finland a group of islands in the middle of the Balticsea.

      Kiitos! That's very kind of you, I always appreciate your comments and support! It's definitely a different way to take on wildlife photography, but I absolutely love it! I'd love to visit your area sometime, I'm part Finn and have always wanted to photograph the amazing scenery and wildlife over there. Do you have a photography page somewhere I could check out? Thanks again for the support!

    I always enjoy your bear series! Glad you made it up there again this year and more importantly safely back home. I was a backpacker before a photographer so these kinds of trips are so cool and almost no wildlife photographers do them. Definitely takes some guts to be solo that long around so many grizzlies! Can't say I there yet (nor are the wife and kids!). Are the grizzlies less potential aggressive towards people during the salmon run than other times like hyperphagia in the fall (coincides with hunting seasons and ungulate kills and gut piles laying around)? Your b roll is good too! The dead salmon in the foreground around minute 20 with you walking in the stream was good. Did the bear at minute 24 and 25 just have salmon guts on his face or were those wounds/scars? Looking forward to the next instalment.

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much, John! It's definitely one of my favorite trips each year, if not my favorite. It turned out to be quite the different trip this time around and I look forward to sharing the rest. You're right, not a lot of wildlife photographers do things this way, and for good reason I think 🤔 it's so much work and the mass amounts of both camera gear and backpacking gear add up really quickly. The Bears are definitely more preoccupied and happy during the Salmon run. They have so much food available that they're not as hangry 😆 I backpack a lot in Bear country in early spring and just prior to denning in the autumn and the Bears are so ornery, I don't even try to photograph them sometimes. That Bear had scars on his face. A lot of those bigger males have scars all over on their faces, backs and shoulders. I saw one once who had a big hole about a foot across on his shoulder from a fight with another male. It's humbling to see and avoid reminder to be ever vigilant around these guys.

    Those bears have got it pretty good with all the salmon there. I can’t imagine sitting eating pizza and having all sorts off other free pizzas just drifting past in front of me. That would be distracting for sure.

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, well said! It amazes me just how much they eat and how long they sit at those fishing spots just eating fish after fish.

    • @JimmyBreitenstein
      @JimmyBreitenstein  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! There were a number of smaller birds that I heard, but they were so flighty, I never could identify them.
