  • I went to the Finnish wilderness in search of brown bears and wolverines, I would be staying in a bear hide for 7 nights in a row and sleeping during the day to make the most of the midnight sun which made photography possible all night! What an awesome adventure!

    Several nights have been spent in the same place. photographing bears and wolverines. On almost every trip, I have been able to photograph these wonderful animals in wonderful light. In about two weeks, go there again, to see if the bears have woken up from their hibernation. Fortunately, there is no distance, only about 200 km. Thanks for the wonderfully made videos.

    What a great experience. We had the luck to come to the same bearwatching area in August last year. At first we did only a bear watching evening trip in the observation house. But on the second day I spontaneously decided to go also into a hide (no. 19). It was incredible. Although I did not see any wolverine nor fox nor wolf I had two (or even three) different bears until it got dark. In the morning there was no big wildlife there but amazing scenery anyways.

      Awesome, I was really hoping for a Wolf as I’ve never seen one but I was still so so happy to see the bears and wolverine and as you said, the scenery is amazing so even when there isn’t wildlife it’s really great!

    Incredible experince. I didnt really understand the name of the place you said you were. I have been to Finland twice to visit a friend (before I did wildlife photogrphy) and the city I visited was 4 hours from Kuhmo. That location is also a place you can book hides to photograph bears, wolves and wolverines. That is where I would like to visit next year. Awesome video, looked like you had an amazing time!

      Yeah there are quite a few on the eastern border near Kuhmo, this was close to a place called Vartius

    Wow, fantastic video - looking forward to part 2! Totally took me back to my amazing two nights watching bears and wolves in that area in 2019 🐻 I'll definitely be back again one day!!
    Which location did you use - I think it was not the same one as I went to but there are several - and do you know if they were providing food for the animals at all?
    PS. The diver was almost certainly a black-throated diver there near Kuopio..

    Great video and experience. Please do not whisper, but talk normally - low if situation so demands. Which gear did you use?

    • @wildlifewitholly
      @wildlifewitholly  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Per, you’re not allowed to talk in the hides which is why I was whispering on the few occasions I did, all my videos have subtitles to help with this and i have a microphone which I wear now so it should be better in my more recent videos.
      I used canon 5d mark IV and 300mm f2.8 lens, occasionally I had a 2x extender as well.

    The bear only stays on the other side of the lake, it's very far, right? Or can you get closer? with a 600mm okay?

    • @wildlifewitholly
      @wildlifewitholly  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes they come closer, I usually used a 300mm and it was nice to get the environment in when they were further away

    What was the food like Olly? I'm very keen to visit the same location

    • @wildlifewitholly
      @wildlifewitholly  ปีที่แล้ว

      It was quite nice, usually a soup with bread and then something like chicken, veg and potato, salad etc. breakfast would be toast, fruit, eggs etc. then you get a sandwich to take to the hides and usually people sleep throughout the day so no lunch

    This is highly unethical and no one should support those hides

    • @wildlifewitholly
      @wildlifewitholly  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I appreciate the concern and it’s important to think about. I believe it’s a contentious topic and highly dependant on the location. Hides like this across Europe have done an amazing job at highlighting the existence of these incredible animals and encouraged reintroductions and protection, enabling populations to recover to sustainable levels. I understand the concern and there are some locations which are unethical in their approach, putting far too much food out - I’ve even heard of dog food being put out, this is wrong I agree. I can’t speak about it now, but at the time I visited, the food being put out here was nowhere close to being able to sustain the bears, it was clear they would still maintain their natural behaviours by the fact they weren’t visiting every night.
      Would I prefer to see them in an entirely natural setting - yes 100%. But do I and do others have the holiday time and the money to go and do that (safely) - sadly not. It’s not perfect, but to raise awareness of these amazing animals and to give governments and landowners financial reasons to allow nature and wildlife to return, this is a viable solution provided they are properly regulated to avoid wildlife become dependant on the food or building any association with people and food.

      @@wildlifewitholly so it’s ok do to something unethical because there’s no way to do it ethically? Many research show this is unethical. It’s a fact, not opinion.

    • @wildlifewitholly
      @wildlifewitholly  21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      A lot of research also shows it has benefited population recovery and perception of these species, not everything is as black and white as you’re suggesting when it comes to ethics. If we’re questioning ethics I could also ask if you’re vegan?, Do you feed garden birds?, How often do you fly? etc. because this all obviously has implications on the natural world. It’s not a perfect world and I’d rather live in one where these wild animals can survive and have stable populations than one where they’re under scrutiny and are hunted/persecuted due to a lack of public understanding and knowledge about them.

    • @Osmonius
      @Osmonius 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@wildlifewitholly please name one research that shows the bear feeding in Finland has helped the environment. Yes I’m vegan. No I don’t feed garden birds because it puts certain species in upper hand position and is not therefore ethical in my location. Whataboutism doesn’t help. Unethical is unethical regardless of what one does or not. Bears don’t need feeding in Finland. Forestry and hunting are only threats for them. Feeding is harmful according to research done at these same hide areas, period.

    • @wildlifewitholly
      @wildlifewitholly  17 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      If you look at Rewilding Europe’s site they have a lot about hides including a best practise guide for wildlife hides where they mention baiting as a practise to be used providing done in a way that doesn’t change behaviour significantly, lead to dependency or habituation. I know that isn’t always the case and of course I’m against hides that don’t follow these practises.
      Maybe Finland’s bear population is secure now but it’s not the case across the rest of Europe. These hides provide a viable option for land use, allowing land owners to move away from intensive farming practises or deforestation which as you mention is also a threat in Finland. If all land could be bought and preserved without the need for any economic gain that would be amazing but the fact is landowners need to make money. Maybe the time for baited hides will soon be over and safari style excursions in nature will takeover (I’d personally love to see this) but I don’t believe that the hides are 100% bad. You’re entitled to your opinion and I understand the issues and criticisms and respect your values, but I think it’s naive to suggest they haven’t had any benefit.
      At the end of the day, I don’t want to argue and we clearly both have a shared interest in the natural world and want to preserve it, our views don’t have to be exactly the same and debates like this are important to have but I also think it’s important to be open minded and consider that maybe not everything is 100% right or wrong.
