It’s Not Therapy, It’s Abuse - Ban Conversion Therapy Now

  • Content warnings: conversion therapy, abuse, coercion, transphobia, psychological harm.
It’s been nearly five years since the UK Government first promised to ban so-called ‘conversion therapy’. Yet today, more than 1.5 million LGBTQ+ people in England and Wales remain at risk of these harmful attempts to ‘cure’ us.
That's why we've launched a new short film alongside 21* other LGBTQ+ organisations, based on the real experiences of conversion therapy survivors.
Conversion therapy doesn’t work. Survivors can suffer from lifelong damage and suffering. It is abuse, pure and simple. And it has to stop.
The UK Government recently moved to put a legislative ban back on the table. But after years of U-turns and broken promises, it's vital that the UK Government does not delay any further, and publishes a draft Bill and timetable for legislation as soon as possible.
The suffering of our communities must end now. Email your MP ⬇️

@@tomwright9904 What you described, if it was truly just that, does not sound like conversion therapy.
Open ended questions which help someone explore their feelings, understand which choices they actually want to make and why, detangle any co-occurring mental health issues, and consider other factors which might affect how they feel about their identity/body/growing up etc. are part of normal affirming therapy. This already works well in the vast majority of cases, which is why almost all people who transition report being happy with that choice. Detransition rates vary from around 2.5% to less than 1% depending where you look. A large majority of those who detransition report doing so because of the discrimination they faced, not because they were not really trans, and many choose to retransition at a later date. A small number of people do feel they were mistaken/confused, or are unhappy about the standard of care/therapy they received, and that should be taken seriously, but it's rare.
On the other hand, pushing people to think a certain way, seeding doubts in their mind, manipulating them, feeding them false information, pressuring them to fit external expectations, telling them they're mistaken, sick, or sinful, that they can be "cured," that you can "help them accept the truth," telling them they'll never be accepted as their identified gender, coaching them to feel hopeless about how awful life would be after transitioning, degrading the concept of transition, humiliating them, withholding love from them until they conform... all of that is abuse. That's why young LGBTQ+ people who undergo conversion therapy are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide than those who don't (AJPH, 2018).

A friend shared this with me. It’s shook me. Too familiar. For those of you who think it doesn’t happen, that this is just a short film.. IT HAPPENED to me.
    I am a transgender man.
I grew up in a Christian family. I believed these things they told me. I believed I was fundamentally wrong. I remember thier words: “your existence is a slap to the face of an almighty powerful creator”. The stuff I went through mirrored this video so closely. Especially the prayer circle. 5 years later and I can still feel the pain and fear of these church people all around me “laying hands on me”.
When I was a teen, in this position, facing this rejection and abuse, I tried to take my life. I thought it was the right thing to do.
Looking back, I can’t believe that thought ever crossed my mind.
For me, this therapy and religious pressure cause huge invisible wounds. I’ve struggled with my mental health significantly. But it couldn’t change who I am. Even this far on, I am still working through the deepest shame I harbor. I am still healing and learning to accept myself.
Today I am just over a week on testosterone therapy. I’m incredibly proud of myself for making it this far. When I told my story at the clinic, the Dr said to me “you are incredibly resilient”. When I reflect on this it, makes me think of everyone else who has gone through similar, or who is still in that position. I fear for other people like me. I made it out of there. But not everyone does.

I don't know if they would not have been allowed to air it or if there's just that drastic of a difference between the US and other places but this is extremely tame. It's to the point where many people get called liars to their faces when sharing their experiences. Corrective sexual assault, physical humiliation and degradation, and pretty much whatever horrible things you can think of is common. Predators are attracted to places where they have power over others who can't fight back and assumed to be liars then punished if they were to ever speak up about what happened. Hatred and the "I'm right, you're wrong, and theres something wrong with you" mentality only increases the level of abuse because its easier to deal with what you are doing to another person if you believe that you are in the right whether you actually are or not. While it's not a place that was specifically for conversion therapy the Elan School is a strong (don't want to call it good) example of a place where decades of abuse took place and the people who heard the crys of the kids who were permanently ruined from the experience did not believe them or chose to look the other way.

I've seen some powerful short films in my time but I've never had one give me chills like this did. It takes less time to watch than I spent sitting with it afterward, taking it in. I've heard such intense horror stories from autistics who were put through ABA (developed by the same guy who came up with conversion therapy and basically the same thing) as children, their struggles with identity. I don't know how well known a fact it is but David Yost, the original blue power ranger, put himself through conversion therapy and attempted suicide after. And people hate the very concept of transness so much that they'd risk their child's entire life to make them conform. People will still argue it causes no harm, and even worse, that it works at all. It's a shameful practice that should be treated with the disdain it deserves and banned from all places humans consider themselves civilised.

This was chilling and so painful to watch. These experiences shouldn't be happening.
I am a psychology student, and graduate member of the British Psychological Society. "Conversion therapy" is something our ethical and regulatory bodies do not endorse or encourage, although I'd say they could be more explicit about their disapproval for the sake of those subject to the "treatment"! Yet, people still practice this vile form of abuse. It is all based in cis-hetero normativity, bigotry, ignorance and lack of proper training with regards to the LGBTQIA+ community. It disgusts me that this still happens to people at all.
Some general suggestions for anyone who is part of the queer community in the UK:
If you are seeking therapy - whether privately or within the NHS, ask any therapist/counsellor prior to meeting them in person (contact via online forms, email, telephone etc):
    - if they have any training or experience working with clients who are LGBTQIA+ (specifically which identity, orientation or relationship style you are looking to explore - you could do this through a secondary email address and use a pseudonym if you didn't feel safe giving personal details).
    - ask them sepcifically if they agree with conversion therapy.
    - Also, prior to seeking therapy - consider what your goals are, what you'd like therapy to help with, and how you think it will help.
    - Check out the regulatory bodies and memberships that therapists and counsellors may be registered with - there are different ones, and this may depend on their level or type of qualification too. It is good to know which ones the practitioner is part of, as these organisations/bodies allow this person to practice legally. HCPC, BPS, UKCP, BACP are just some.
    - who they have insurance with, and who you could contact if you had a complaint about their practice. (Think of all of this as safe-guarding yourself)
    - for a run down of their credentials and experience. Anyone worth their salt will not mind explaining their qualifications to you (even if you only ask about their most advanced qualifiation) those who do are defensive tend to be all about being the 'expert in a position of power' - this for me is a major red flag, and absolutely ground for not seeing that 'professional', because as the client, you are the 'expert' on yourself.
    - ask what their policy is on physical contact and proximity (e.g. do they hug their clients? Do they offer online services?)
    - Consider a therapist who is your own gender (especially if you feel unsafe with a particular gender).
    - Look for 'Pink Therapists' - these practitioners have undergone LGBTQIA+ specific qualifications and workshops, meaning they are safer for queer folx. Some practitioners list books they have read as part of 'CPD' (continuing professional development) and reading a book is not the same as engaging in training and supervision with LGBTQIA+ issues or folx, so reading is secondary to qualitifcations.
    - look for Affirming therapists - people who accept your identity and how you express yourself. Therapists are not meant to tell you you're defective and need to change - you decide what you want from therapy.
    - consider asking if therapists/counsellors provide consession/reduced fees for clients who are from lower income backgrounds, students, etc.
    During therapy:
    - establish your pronouns and preferred name/nickname.
    - make clear your preferenes surrounding proximity/touch - do you handshake?
    - consider telling someone where you are if you are seeing a private practitioner
    - consider your transport to/from the service. If you feel vulnerable after a session, is there a safe place to go?
Should you have any issues in therapy (e.g. breech of confidentiality outside of safeguarding issues, unwanted touch, pressure to participate in research, or anything like we saw in the video):
    - remember that a bad experience in therapy is not representative of all therapists, or all types of therapy. E.g. If CBT doesn't work, look for another approach.
    - if a therapist causes you harm, do not be afraid to complain, report them, stop seing them again, or to walk out during a session. You can consider whether you want to complain and/or report them to their regulatory body, and/or police as well, based on their conduct. But look after yourself, most importantly.

Sort of unrelated question, is psychology a difficult subject to pursue? I really want to be a psychologist or therapist or something later in life but I’m afraid that I’ll fall behind or it will be too overwhelming and I’ll eventually stop wanting to learn about it because it causes too much stress.

As a transgender person, I can express my opinion that the video only portrays an extreme and somewhat traumatic aspect that is not necessarily in all cases. I think the best approach they can take if they consider themselves serious is to strike a balance between objectivity and honesty when discussing the transgender issue as this was propagandist.
Sensitivity and respect are essential to maintaining a constructive dialogue and promoting equal rights and understanding. Just as we fight for recognition, we must also help those who are confused to see that after surgery there is no complete happiness, and that it all depends on addressing self-esteem."
in my case my family supported me and i was not socially influenced like some cases i have seen that end up damaging our fight making it look like a fad.

So let me get this "straight"
Daniel is a male teen. But wants to be tr@nz or a fem gae? They sent him to conversion "therapy" and got off easy from what I can tell. And when he went home, he looked like the life has been sucked out of him and is veritably a zombie.
Daniel {or Donna/ Dianna} is either going to delete themselves or run away, end up in some messed up situations, do the messiest of adult entertainment, get onto street substances and may rush any procedures he'll/they'd have to go through.
Honestly, I Get that the family gave birth to a boy and wants him to stay a boy; but they should just let him express himself a bit, don't press the issue and give it some time. Then when he's 22+ he can do what he pleases.
I also have to enquire, how long was the "wanting to be a girl" thing going on for. there are certain ques that manifest when the child is growing up. what happened there.
Also the whole "take off your clothes" yikes - i know where that went. poor thing
*Wasn't the UK banning conversion "therapy" a while back, but people rallied in the streets to protest it or something?
    I'm confused.

    Bible supports conversion therapy
"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
"Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:9)
The "Such were some of you" is conversion therapy.
