I was 6 years old when I first heard this song. It's the earliest memory I have of music resonating with me. I'm 22 now and I have been trying to find this song for 16 years. I gave up a while ago. I even wrote my own song based on the chorus and lyrics I could vaguely remember. It got the the point where I honestly thought I had just made up this song in my head, yet this melody would have influence on my songwriting. Today I found this song randomly on my mates insta story. I cant even explain how intense that feeling was😂. Even though I only heard it once, over 15 years ago, it is exactly how I remembered it sounding. Its wild the impact music can have on people.
I totally get this. I have had songs Ive heard in my head but no title and a couple words of lyrics and tried to find them desperately. It’s the biggest relief if I finally find them. Sometimes it is a total accident to find one and the relief is profound. 🩵🩵
I've loved Elbow since this was released: the power and originality of the music, yes, but even more the richness of the lyrics. I was a hard-up journalist, truly a life of "overdraft speeches and deadlines to make, cramming commitments..." while still pining for the love of my life from "five years ago and [almost] 3,000 miles away". This had uncanny meaningfulness that just had to get to me... And so brilliantly done.
A person that you can never stop loving, even if years has passed. Someone you think you have forgotten and than a song, a scent, a word, bring you into the past. Straight to the head like the first cigarette of the day...
This song has the effect on me, that it's trying to convey. If I even think about the lyrics "And I can't move my arm..." I have tears, a lump in my throat, and feelings of nostalgia, love, loss, and helplessness.
What makes great music? The beat, the hook, the voice, the quality of the playing all these but add heartfelt, meaningful lyrics then great music can be devastating. In this one track elbow hit all these points
The Bones Of You" So I'm there, Charging around with a juggernaut brow Overdraft speeches and deadlines to make Cramming commitments like cats in a sack Telephone burn and a purposeful gait When out of a doorway the tentacles stretch Of a song that I know and the world moves in slow-mo Straight to my head like the first cigarette of the day And it's you and it's May And we're sleeping through the day And I'm five years ago And three thousand miles away Do I have time? A man of my calibre? Stood in the street like a sleepwalking teenager? No. And I dealt with this years ago I took a hammer to every memento But image on image like beads on a rosary Pull through my head as the music takes hold And the sickener hits, I could work till I break But I love the bones of you, that I will never escape And it's you, and it's May And we're sleeping through the day And I'm five years ago And three thousand miles away And I can't move my arm For the fear that you will wake And I'm five years ago And three thousand miles away And I'm five years ago And three thousand miles away And I'm five years ago And three thousand miles away And it's you and its May And we're sleeping through the day And I'm five years ago And three thousand miles away
+Namrata Jogdand Thanx so much! i've heard this song first in the coffeeshop i walked in, found the playlist from the radio station and looked it up off course on you tube. From then while allready singing mostly along i saw your comment, opened it and sang for three days further! that is up to now of course :p .
Thanks! I too heard this while shopping. Fortunately the staff were playing a CD and could tell me the artist's name and the song title. The subject is such a universal one, I'm surprised no-one has pinpointed it so exactly before.
This is one of the greatest lyric sets I know of. Always hits, and always hits hard. And another always is that I always thought it was: 'a man of my callipers', probably because of the subsequent lines and the title. You hobble your present when you put a hammer to your past.
💔💔 And its you... And it's me... And we're sleeping through the day 💕 how many mornings did we play this and look at each other smiling? I love you so much for everything baby doll xxxxxx
This so succinctly, elegantly, and hauntingly captures the feelings I've come to relish after losing someone who loved me more than I truly understood and I love too more deeply than I knew until he had left this life. Image on image like beads of a rosary...the bones of you that won't let me go....paraphrasing but F*** that is art. I'm grateful to have discovered this band so serendipitously this morning.
Yes. Though, for me, as a hard-up journalist when the song came out, with "overdraught speeches and deadlines to make", it was less the hard businessman, but yes: decisions and fate and a great love that couldn't be -- and is maybe still calling out to him... Great.
I'm listening to this song with goosebumps on my arm, lump in my throat and Precious treasured moments in my Heart......Reading the comments here, I think you all know the meaning and feeling
So yeah, I love me music, this kinda stuff, but I totally missed Elbow... I was getting to that age where I wasn't focusing on what was current and reaching for my rosetints and the 90's more and more. I just knew Elbow as that band with the beardy guy who did the Olympics. But this song turned up on my Spotify a few months ago, and wow wow wow did I fall in love straght away. Loving the album it came off (which is an absolute masterpiece), now I dare say I'll catch up on everything else. Gotta love Spotify for that, right? Any, this song? Oof, right in the feels. We've all misguidedly thought work was more important than love at some point, eh? Beautiful song.
Beautiful song. Glad I stumbled upon this band. Not sure how I missed them before really/ The name sounded vaguely familiar, and considering how long they have been around, it should.
I like to imagine the people going about the room is the sensations the singer is expression. Sounds of construction outside the apartment, a friend or a landlord checking in, the scent of the woman still lingering. Really his only human connections to the world left after the woman left
I ended up watching them at the Manchester Apollo knowing only a couple of songs beforehand. It was a great gig, you should go watch them, the songs are more epic live and he’s a great chilled out, witty frontman.
honestly.. never felt like somebody else was articulating my thoughts, even sub conscience...apart from hearing the lyrics of this tune. personally i think its a masterpiece... but im not sure if its for that reason or just that its beautifully made?
to add.. he writes great songs... almost vauge but succinct at the same time.. artistry to convey what we all mostly fumble to articulate accurately... he has romance in him i think
Absolutely love this song still in 2021. The lyrical style reminds me of some of the earlier work of The tea party (which I also adore) but with a bit more oomph in it. Thanks for the memories Elbow.
God knows I loved the bones of you. The comment from 3 years ago. You would have been pregnant then... My heart 💔 beautiful memories that just make me sad x
Unfortunatly "the tentacles of a song" are this song ...and the bones are "HER" bones....Although now it is 12 years ago and was always 5000 miles away London to La ...it was 5 then 10 years.......to come back and sleep through the day and it was heaven for a while.... I thought I had dealt of this years ago..This song hurts really I mean really fucking hurts and the paradox is that this is the song that always brings it all back. Only GG and Matt Johnson seem to live in my head and lift my life straight into lyrics...No wonder He did a cover of August and September...Almost a pleasent pain...Almost !
This song deserves 722 million views. Massively underrated
Absolute masterpiece, along with the rest of the album. Paltry amount of views.
It deserves to be in 1080p HD
ABOSULTELY PERFECT COMMENT

Elbow never fails to amaze me

One of the world’s five perfect songs
It's certainly got to be up there...and the other four?
I'm guessing : Bowie, Nick Cave, Modest Mouse and Radiohead

Throw in the video, with absolutely baffling choreography and amazing editing... can't get enough of this one.

Desert island song for me. Love this.
I’ve known this song forever one of my dad’s favourites
@Lozboz6, Your dad has great taste. Hope you have a rich relationship.
i love the melancholy & dramatic of the melody...😍 my all-time favorite

It says "a man of my calibre"
These lyrics are so beautiful. The song grasps me every time.

A song about the power of music, bringing a cold, hard businessman back to emotional memories of a woman who left him who he can never stop loving.
Yes. Though, for me, as a hard-up journalist when the song came out, with "overdraught speeches and deadlines to make", it was less the hard businessman, but yes: decisions and fate and a great love that couldn't be -- and is maybe still calling out to him...
Great.
The world is not yet matured enough to understand this song. It will maybe.... after 50 years later and 30000 miles away
I'm listening to this song with goosebumps on my arm, lump in my throat and Precious treasured moments in my Heart......Reading the comments here, I think you all know the meaning and feeling
My lovely ballet friend leaping so beautifully, looking like she can fly x

Elbow at their best. Awesome.
"Overdraft speeches" classic!
why isn't The loneliness of a tower crane driver not on the greatest hits. its by far the best elbow track

Unbelievable tune 👏🏼
Those octave leaps 👌🏻
the words of this and other Elbow tracks are the new songs to the soul .....

Amazing writing
And now THIS song's tentacles stretch out of a doorway to stop me in my tracks and fling me into the past. Damn.
No matter he gone.. I have loved him since forever even though he died over 20yrs ago 😢
He's still alive...
LMAOOO
uhhh... he's not dead, this is from 2008... you probably got him mistaken by someone else
Ah education, it's done so well...
She was talking about a loved one guys.
Oh, the lyrics....amazing
Agent J “Well you know what they say, it’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all”
Agent K “Try it”
Awesome
But I love the bones of you that I will never escape. I had those lyrics tattooed on myself for you. They say exactly how I feel about you SABF x
Just listened to these guys for the first time today, different than my normal (metal), but I dig it.
Happy birthday x

Does anybody know who the dancer is? She is hypnotic to watch! I love how they made this with no overlapping. Seems impossible. Very clever...
2021 and now repeatedly playing like I did for grounds of divorce and one day like this...
Please remember me when I’m gone SABF
straight to my head like the first cigarette of the day.
Whats mad to think i rember this song coming out
Que buena canción 😊
I miss you so much x
I heard this on the radio and i was like, kind of like old muse style. But then the voice didnt sound like it xD But i love this song now !
I would love to see this video live performed as a dance onstage. It would take an incredible amount of coordination.
Lovely song, great singer. It's actually the same girl you see all the time, and smart video editing ;)
How have so many people not heard of Elbow?! He's awesome!
