As a fellow German, I have a few theories why we make up so much of their subscribers/people who watch them: 1. We don’t really have that many Odyssey players/ speedrunners in general here 2. A lot of us speak English pretty well, so it’s basically studying and having fun at the same time 3. You guys are really entertaining :)
@@thewallsspeaktome3507 Yeah, we live in this weird state of knowing a lot of English but wanting to make everything accessible to people who don’t speak English that well or not at all (mostly people over the age of 40)
As an american who has never been to europe, I did try to label a map of europe once and I a) completely forgot France exists, b) labeled France as Germany, c) had at least 6 countries named "Poland??"
That's absolutely funny. However, if you were to be looking at a WW2 war map at one point German forces did control France. Thankfully the Allied forces won that war. However if it was still 1940 to 1944 you would have been kind of correct. That goes for a lot of Europe though. 😂
@@magicmofy2871 As a european it really got more difficult with the end of Yugoslavia. Many countries that are hard to remember for me. Even harder where exactly they are (Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are easy for me). Also I mix up Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. And even worse I also mix up Sweden, Finland and Norway.
50:00 It's kinda funny the history behind Gaius Iulius Caesar… since Gaius would be his praenomen ie his name, his alone. And Iulius is his nomen, or broader family name. And Caesar is his cognomen or his closer family name. ‘Caesar’ came to be a ruling title (sort of dynastic), whence German ‘Kaiser’ and Russian ‘tsar’, etc. (By the way, all C's in Latin are the hard C (k sound); English took its soft C pronunciations from the French. So Cicero would have been like Kikero, or Kicker-oh.) Caesarean section is due to the phrase ‘a caesō mātris uterō’. _If_ this is the origin for the Caesar cognomen, then Gaius or an ancestor of his may have been born by C-section. This origin may have been spread by anti-Iulius folk back in the day.
All of the Midwestern States are so forgettable... even if I know the names of them, come on anything west of Illinois, North of Texas and East of Oregon is nigh impossible to remember. It's a lot easier to remember the entirety to of the East Coast. I mean Maine is easy, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida. We can toss in Ohio, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois. Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa and Sweet Home Alabama. And if I forgot anyone on that side, well oops, you're not important. Europe is so much easier. It's just 51 nations which 4 of weren't on the quiz even. Those being Georgia(the country), Armenia, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. Although Kazakhstan is only partially in Europe, but so is Turkey and Russia... This is because the Border is very weird, it begins in Northern Russia following the Ural Mountains, then it follows a river from Russia into Kazakhstan that ends in the Caspian Sea, it then follows the Borders of the Caucasian mountains that Borders Turkey, into the Black Sea, then it follow Turkeys coastline, until it reaches the Mediterranean Sea, thus splitting a little bit of Turkey off, to be part of Europe. And everything North and West of that line is Europe... Geographically. Politically one could argue that only Germany is Europe, because Europeans do dislike each other very very much, and the Germans wants to rule over the world...
@@livedandletdie and us Americans get smoke for not knowing Europe when USA is all of what you complained, I'm just telling you what most people would remember to know the placements. I mean, if an American did guessing where the European countries are, they'd get similar things to what I said, like how Italy is a boot, and that Greece looks like a side profile of oogy boogie man from the nightmare before Christmas. We only have Rhode island for a small spec that counts as a state. Now, let's look at Luxemburg, Liechtenstein, Malta, etc. do you remember those spots that you can confuse for crumbs being on the map or something. Honestly, most ppl in America don't know what the Netherlands is and the story of Siegfried from there. All territories are confusing to those who haven't been there for most of their lives.
As an American, when I did the tests, I got 49 (Vermont and NH are interchangeable for me), 10/13 in Canada, and about 65% of Europe (though I missed almost all of Eastern Europe because almost all those of countries are less than 200 years old)
Idk if you read comments here but if you like Hollow Knight I really recommend Ori and the Blind Forest (and its sequel Ori and the Will of the Wisps), the movement is very similar, though in my experience Hollow Knight’s movement it’s actually comparatively kind janky. I must say, I finished the Canada one, the US one and the EU one... In under 10 minutes. Average 90% Now I'm doing the African one... and I got 74% on the naming African countries one. Let's do Asia now... got 92% on that one... Let's do South America... 83% and I hate myself for forgetting the 2 I couldn't remember, one of which is Suriname and the other being Bolivia which is named after Bolivar... anyways, Oceanian countries next... Okay I do not expect anything over 4 rights out of 14 here.. Okay now for the real test... Countries of the world... wish me luck, no you don't have to... out of 197 I get... in 15 minutes... 160... yeah the problematic part is Caribbean nations, Africa and Oceania. So on the world one I got 81%. I'd like to see an American do better on their first try. It's over 25 years since I had a single Geography class.

I think most people aren’t claiming nationality (unless they’re recent immigrants) but are more trying to imagine what parts of the globe their family came from. Definitely more like descent than nationality. It’s just that people widely know nations but not “my family came from the Caucasus mountains” or some other geological toponym. TLDR it’s easier to talk countries than exact places. And tons of Americans don’t have family documentation so they must make an educated guesstimate.
