Why has my generation turned away from music like this to the likes of Lady Blah Blah, Coldplay, and techno garbage. This music actually requires talent!
Stuff had it happening, no egos or surprises in the music. Lots of easy listening with unbelievable grooves. Gadd can make the simplest patterns groove like crazy, and the hardest ones sound smooth and effortless. When Gadd first came on the scene; a drummer who plays solos in terms of phrases and considers the music first, what a concept. Gadd has commented about "grooving so hard" during the Stuff days, thanks to recorded media, but what it must have been like to hear this in person!
Just saw him at PASIC in Austin, up close and was amazing, played with some amazing guys from Cuba and I think Puerto Rico?.. regardless, he IS what rhythm is all about. GREAT playing, Senior Gadd!! :)
Steve looks like he should be making a delicious pizza in this video. but for real that solo is killer and when him and gordon come back in after steve's solo I always go nuts.
No it is Gordon Edwards, bandleader of STUFF, the legendary band from NYC. See the DVD and CD "Live Montreux 1976", where this video is drawn from. There is no other than EC , who rated it: "In my humble opinion one of the best groove zones ever recorded, every player a genius - ERIC CLAPTON
I used to go and hear these guys at Mikell's in NYC. Was incredible watching them in a small club environment. I miss those days... God Bless Eric Gale and Richard Tee peace
Man this playing is amazing, it's not just as many notes as he can play at once, but an actual solo with dynamics, This is amazing what are some bands an aspiring drummer should look up Gadd playing in besides Stuff?
@shanemc25 My thoughts exactly. He's just like Bonzo...his playing style is fairly laid-back usually, but out of nowhere comes this explosive god-like show of skill.
Gadd's dynamic use of snare + high hat is unmatched by anybody. He doesn't have to pull his crazy 32nd note paradiddles to impress either, some simple 8th note grooves suffice and then some.
Steve Gadd, master of classy drumming. It's a dying style and I'm glad that I'm 28 and teach it whenever I can, so that it never dies out completely. Not that I can play like Gadd. Just sayin'.
@CrawfordDrummer w/Paul Simon, and Steely Dan's Aja the title track (containing one of the most famous and admired drum solos ever), to name just two more
So musical. Whether you could play this or not. Could you write it and perform it in front of thousands of people. Thats what I thought. Respect the man. He makes it look easy. He invented the stuff he's playing. We're just copying. There is a world of difference.
Ahh. The good old days when music was totally FELT, and everything was just easygoing. Tons of great music to hear these days, but the popular music is SO FAR OFF the level it was back then. Sad huh?
any body know some real thin hihats like the ones in the video? all hihats today are like metal slabs i just want some light and airy ones like gadd had
... damn nice pocket ... miss this kind of playing
What a groove. Unbelievably funky and tasteful. Nice to see him in the younger years!
Oh my gadd

Hands down, this is the most amazing groove ever.STEVE GADD IS THE MAN!!!!!!!
Steve Gadd has the tastiest licks ... ever!

GUH! Im also so jealous of his hi-hats! They always sound so amazing!
THANK YOU for posting this..,...This just made my day!
Gadds solos are so smooth blending in with all the other players
I would love to see a transcription of the groove he plays coming out of the solo. What a great feel.
thanks, i actually realised that he was playing singles shortly after making this post, i can do it now...but it's very hard to go as fast as he is!
What I like the most is the first twenty seconds of the song. What a band!
It's so beautiful.
I would have loved to play with such a drummer.
Why has my generation turned away from music like this to the likes of Lady Blah Blah, Coldplay, and techno garbage. This music actually requires talent!
Stuff, I wish I paid attention to these guys when they were out. Hearing the pop stuff, makes you appreciate a group like Stuff.
It's official...modern music has hit the shits.
My drum Hero hands down

Yes. You can buy the DVD or CD.
i love the spaces he leaves for the solo to breath.
the essential Steve Gadd
Holy shit!! Every one of those beats was dead on!
Look at this face, he's looking right through everything. He's in the groove.
Great drummer! I believe he's the hero for drummers in Japan, too!
Today I've ordered 2 DVDs of him, "Up Close" and "Master Series" through Amazon.
Steve looks like he should be making a delicious pizza in this video. but for real that solo is killer and when him and gordon come back in after steve's solo I always go nuts.

I used to go and hear these guys at Mikell's in NYC. Was incredible watching them in a small club environment. I miss those days...
God Bless Eric Gale and Richard Tee

gadd is soulll... from other world...
DAMN! o.o
@1122Dragon To play simple backbeat, with good feel and with groove requires talent too.
Man this playing is amazing, it's not just as many notes as he can play at once, but an actual solo with dynamics, This is amazing what are some bands an aspiring drummer should look up Gadd playing in besides Stuff?
more cowbell please, Steve GOD
@shanemc25 My thoughts exactly. He's just like Bonzo...his playing style is fairly laid-back usually, but out of nowhere comes this explosive god-like show of skill.
woah

I love how afro's and big beards on white guys are back in style.
And this was pretty cool too.
that cowbell makes it groovy
Man I need to get a sweet perm like that.
taste...taste...taste.
@BigBoiJC We're on a mission from Gadd !
@shanemc25 Ha. Love it!

So musical. Whether you could play this or not. Could you write it and perform it in front of thousands of people. Thats what I thought. Respect the man. He makes it look easy. He invented the stuff he's playing. We're just copying. There is a world of difference.

get on the good... :)
the bassist wasn't even sure he finished his solo
any body know some real thin hihats like the ones in the video? all hihats today are like metal slabs i just want some light and airy ones like gadd had
Singles.
What size of the drum sticks did Gadd use in this video? Maybe 7A?
i'd say he has them though
@BigBoiJC lmfaoo
First time i see Gadd using Remo cs in snare and all toms...> Ludwig Silver Dots, look at the logo. Also CS doesn't reflect light like these do.
What's the snare?
Samuel L Jackson sure is a great guitar player
Bass player looks like marsellus wallace.
