Here’s little about me!
My name is Meghan Arriola and I live in Texas with my husband Jaime, where I dedicate my time to taking care of exotic and domesticated animals on my farm. We run a rescue and sanctuary for animals like alpacas, birds and reptiles. I do animal education presentations for groups and schools. Our alpacas also do events where we are able to teach people about these unique animals. I have used service dogs for medical needs for over 10 years and I am an advocate for assistance animals and mental health awareness.
I am an animal educator that brings science related ideas to an audience from around the world by presenting fun and interesting topics in a family friendly way. Animals touch our lives in unique ways everyday as simply being our pets and companions, but how can we make their lives equally as special now that they live in captivity? My TH-cam channel and blog explore ways to meet this goal by tackling things like animal behavior, human-animal relationships and veterinary medicine. Animal science is a great way to teach people of all ages that education is fun and nerdy is cool.
My previous animal related work experience includes working in veterinary clinics, private zoos, training horses and volunteer work in wildlife rehabilitation, rescue/foster/adoption programs and therapeutic horsemanship for children with disabilities.
When I am not working with animals, I am working at the health care clinic owned by my husband Jaime and I, where we provide services to low income, minority neighborhoods. We have been on the frontlines fighting covid19. I also have a passion for art and I am an award winning painter and photographer and published author. I am naturally very introverted but I am extroverted about sharing my passions and doing my part to make the world a better place!

@@HappyTailsAnimals I'm an exotics vet and I really enjoyed this video and you gave some very good advice! I would like to add some of my own from my experiences :) First you are right about most vets not wanting to see rabbits so finding a good exotics vet is important! The unfortunate reality for rabbits is that they dont make a lot of money for the clinic as many rabbit owners are not willing to spend as much money on them as dog owners and they can be a bit of a liability since you have to know how to pick them up without breaking their backs, how to keep them calm when they are surrounded by dog and cat smells, and what drugs you are legally allowed to give them. Second, I do recommend that you fast but only for 3 hours before hand. The reason is because rabbits have a bad habit of keeping leftovers in their mouths and this food stuff can get dragged down into their airway when we intubate. I found that 3 hours is that happy spot where they dont go into GI stasis and we dont have to worry about clearing the mouth of hay beforehand. Second is that I think older vets might not want to give pain meds because rabbits are considered "food animals". The laws regulating what that category of animal can get are much stricter that with a dog or cat. Mostly it's to prevent people from eating meat contaminated with antibiotics or opioids. Now I realize that most people who are getting their rabbits neutered are not planning on eating them, but the law doesn't differentiate that. Now we have great NSAIDs that are not controlled that work great in rabbits (I love me some meloxicam) but older vets sometimes don't keep with the times especially in rural areas.
Last point for me is that while male neuters might be considered optional, all females should be spayed if they are not being used for breeding. This is because uterine cancer risk in intact nonbreeding female rabbits is extremely high! 60% will develop cancer by age 3 and by age 6 that number jumps to 85-90%. I have seen a few videos that talk about spay and neutering rabbits but this point seems to get missed a lot so I just wanted to yell it to the heavens, so all rabbit owners know the cancer risk :)
I just got my bun bun spayed. It was $675. They gave me critical, a syringe for water and pain meds. She was groggy for a day and then started eating immediately. It was like nothing for however I still doted on her. My rabbit has been so expensive!

On my planet, rabbits have razor sharp teeth and can grow up to 30 feet tall. Needless to say, spaying/neutering is quite the challenge.

My 9yr old rabbit passed away a month ago. He was an unaltered male who lived inside. I'm considering getting a male and female and know I will have to get them fixed. I have called so many veterinarian''s and they all say gas. (10 veterinarians) I'm not sure what to do. I'm considering not getting a second rabbit now. I've read they do better with a second bunny and want the best life for them.
I was told when I get them at 8 weeks old to keep them separated until they are altered. Is it okay to keep them in the same room seperated by a fence? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as the information out there is limited. Thank you for the information you share.

I am going to be getting 2 female Giant Flemish Rabbits they will be 8 weeks old when I get them and I am going to be making them inside rabbits, so my question is will I have to get them spaded as I do plan on letting them live together.
But from what I have read on the internet other people are saying that keeping 2 un-spayed female rabbits together will lead them to fight at about the 4 -6 months stage of their lives when they start to get hormonal, is this true or is it incorrect facts others are saying.

If you have two females it is not necessary to spay them. It's a personal choice. Spaying does not guarantee that they will get along as adults. It's possible for it to go either way whether or not they are spayed. Since they are being raised together they will probably remain friends as adults. Spaying can have certain benefits such as with behavior or potty training but it's not a guarantee and issues can still come up. I wish there was an easy answer but it's not black and white. You just have to figure out what is best for you.
Do you still have Merida?
Yes I do. She is about 10 years old now and she is doing well but her age is catching up to her. She won't be introduced to the new rabbits since that would be too stressful for her health and emotional wellbeing. She has never done well with other rabbits.
