i spent one day in the skull cavern just farming prismatic shards, and being the NOOB I am I went round and gave them all to villagers, as well as not having gone into town much other than to complete quests for villagers
the next day I went to town I was just bombarded with cutscenes, I had to reenter Judi's house 4 times because it kept triggering cutscenes

Not really, it's part of sleeping you just hear a sound. By that standard everytime you level up or see your profits for the day it's a 'cutscene'. They said it's any time you lose control to watch an event or see dialogue. If text came up, then it would've probably counted.

Yes but the intro is super long, it takes several minutes to complete so isn't really worth it.
