Her voice is AMAZING- I have a painting by her I bought after meeting her at the Broadway flea market a couple years ago and it's one of my favorite things I own
Omg I love how Laura Bell Bundy is also watching this vid during quarantine. Thank gawd for bootlegs! Otherwise I’d never get to see this legendary cast/show!
You Can't Stop the Beat is perhaps one of the most exciting finales I have seen on a stage! The NBC version earlier this month was the best Hairspray ever. RIP Dick Latessa and does anyone notice Harvey's finale costume looks a bit like the costume for the NBC version?
RockyHorror Gleek Makes perfect sense to me. Although I do like Harvey's pink finale costume he wore for the Grammy Awards in 2003 when he presented Comedy Album to Robin Williams (RIP), The Tony Awards the final performances of Hairspray on Broadway and the Hollywood Bowl production. I do like the costumes in the NBCV version. However, I was hoping they would bring in William Ivey Long to recreate the original costumes we see here.
Poppy 123 you can't compare the two though.....Hairspray LIVE was based off the 2002 Broadway musical and not the 2007 movie... they weren't trying to be like the movie since its not part of the play......
Incomparable. I had vistors in 2002. We saw "Phanto', "Mamma Mia", and "Hairspray". That was 22 years ago and scores of shows later. None has matched it's exuberance and the euphoria it soaked the audience in.
I originally disliked Harvey Fierstein's performance as Edna, it felt to much like "oh i'm on stage i gotta act for people" rather than him actually acting, but then I realized. This isn't him trying to act, this is him acting as Edna trying to act. It sounds stupid but it's just layered acting which is great and something that not even John Travolta did or probably even thought of.
Love Harvey he always entertains, whether he makes you laugh or cry. A truly great artist whether acting, writing or directing- Thanks for the Wonderful Memories!!!!
Oh my gosh, I never noticed that Tracey, when Maybelle throws off the trousers, looks in amazement at her dress and then shrugs and continues dancing!!
i saw this many times, but got lottery tickets (front row) the night before it closed. The original cast, at this song, they tried to get me to come on stage, since I knew the dance. But due to a knee injury (tumor in my knee removed) I wasn't able to jump on stage and join in. Did get most of the cast to sign my Playbill, and Marissa Jaret Winoker signed my ticket. Was amazing... its funny, every time I saw a broadway musical, i had issues with my phone so never got pictures with anyone... at least i got there signatures tho!On a side note this seems like its broken up a bit, it should be straight through Tracy, Penny/Seaweed, Edna, MotorMouth Maybelle, Amber 🕸
Oh my gosh. I remember that. I was in front row orchestra aisle seat on middle section left. Harvey was right there! I don’t think I breathed all night he was so fantastic. How a non-Singer can upstage the cast in a musical is beyond me, but he did! So much energy and such a great show!
I remember my first trip to NY, it was the same year the movie came out. My mom got us tickets to see the broadway version as a belated birthday gift. The night before the show, the original movie was on TV. The day after I saw it in cinema. That was the best year of my life.
The original production of Hairspray opened at the Neil Simon Theatre and ran there for over 6 years. This performance was a couple weeks before opening, but still at the Neil Simon. Thing about Broadway stages is that they all vary. There are some very large stages and some small ones as well. Really depends on the needs of the show.
Christopher Graham that is how it is. It is only highered in the NBC Live performance, but I green, it feels like it has more momentum when it is highered.
Brooke Katz It was a Wonderful World of Disney movie based on the Broadway musical of the same name which is a retelling of Hans Christian Andreson's fairy tale classic Princess and the Pea.
I always remember when Harvey came to edge of the stage and affirmed the love and worth of all people at the end of this number. Those were the times when the then-current administration wanted to define marriage and clothe statues! Harvey was right: "You can't stop the beat!".. and they didn't. Love from Baltimore!
The movie originally went in completely the opposite direction. It had Velma getting arrested, and the cop singing, "I can't" referring to arresting Velma, and then everyone else singing the "Yes, you can!" It was such a smart idea to remove that. The Broadway version works so well!
Had the privilege of seeing the final dress of this show at the Neil Simon. It had played out of town in Seattle, I believe. This was before the internet chats decided if a show was good before critics did. NONE of us were prepared. One of the few times I saw a show expecting nothing going in but several hours later was ecstatic and I knew that it was going to be a huge hit.
I wish there was a hairspray with Harvey cast as Edna again and it was put on Netflix or Disney cause this definitely seems like a Disney movie. Because I would love to just re-watch this over and over again.
OMG!!! WHERE DID YOU FIND THIS!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you SOOOO much for posting!! Do you have any more footage? I thought I had every Live Capture of the show- but I guess I don't!
aurora spiderwoman Pleasure. I didn't get into theatre until almost a decade ago. I used to be afraid of the house lights dimming. I sometimes wish I would have gotten my anexity over sooner. Plus I have autism
Manuel Orozco If I were to go back to ‘02 with a Time machine I would have done 2 things. 1) Meet my grandma. 2) Watch the musical one way or another. (I wish I was born in 2001 instead of 2002. Because ‘02 sounds like it was a great year back then!)
No matter what role she's in, Kerry Bulter will always be one of my faves on Broadway. She can just immediately steal any scene.
Jamir Gordon sort of the reason why so many of us underdogs were drawn to musical theater-that exact journey!
Just piping in half a decade later to say she was still blatantly robbed of a Tony nomination for this.
The girl who plays Penny has the best voice omg it's so great
The always good Kerry Butler (recently in "Mean Girls," currently in "Beetlejuice").
Of course she does she’s freaking KERRY BUTLER
Her voice is AMAZING- I have a painting by her I bought after meeting her at the Broadway flea market a couple years ago and it's one of my favorite things I own
Xanadu, Mean Girls, Beetlejuice, Bat Boy, Catch Me If You Can, Belle in BnB in Canada… she’s phenomenal!
Her name is Amanda bynes she also plays penny in hair spray 2007
I wanna know how “Amber” could dance with that wig/hair 😂😂
Well, It's Laura Bell Bundy so anything is possible lmao
2 physical therapy sessions and 1 chiropractic visit a week : )
Laura Bell Bundy omg Laura is that really you? If it is I just wanted to say you’ve been such an inspiration for me!
Laura Bell Bundy omg Lauraaaaa
Omg I love how Laura Bell Bundy is also watching this vid during quarantine. Thank gawd for bootlegs! Otherwise I’d never get to see this legendary cast/show!
You Can't Stop the Beat is perhaps one of the most exciting finales I have seen on a stage! The NBC version earlier this month was the best Hairspray ever. RIP Dick Latessa and does anyone notice Harvey's finale costume looks a bit like the costume for the NBC version?
Manuel Orozco well the dress Edna wears In Hairspray LIVE was inspired from this since they wanted to bring back the memory
RockyHorror Gleek Makes perfect sense to me. I do like the costumes in the NBCV version. However, I was hoping they would bring in William Ivey Long to recreate the original costumes we see here.
Manuel Orozco hairspray live was so good but I don't think it beats the 2007 one
Poppy 123 you can't compare the two though.....Hairspray LIVE was based off the 2002 Broadway musical and not the 2007 movie... they weren't trying to be like the movie since its not part of the play......
Poppy 123 To each their own
HOLD UP! IS THAT WILL SCHUESTER PLAYING LINK?!
yes
JP BLACK it sounds and looks like him?! Good catch
Yup! He was a Broadway actors before Glee. If you wanna hear him sing, look up "Light in the Piazza."
@Suri Nguyen pathetic comment
I am SHOOK WHA
Hairspray is everything a musical should be. Its glorious, happy and makes you wish the world could be that way.
Incomparable. I had vistors in 2002. We saw "Phanto', "Mamma Mia", and "Hairspray". That was 22 years ago and scores of shows later. None has matched it's exuberance and the euphoria it soaked the audience in.
The people who were born when this number was performed are now old enough to vote. Let that sink in.
I thought this was 2003/2004?
Oh wait sorry you're right I just now noticed '02. Sorry.
Yeah it's crazy.
They’re almost old enough to drink.

I loved Devine as the original Edna Turnblad. He actually made the character his own.
I love Harvey but yeah, that voice is a problem ... to just be heard at all he's gotta PUSH so hard
@@wildfiregoddess666 lLLLLLLLove Divine
..i felt both Harvey&Travolta the best choices for both mediums
Love Harvey he always entertains, whether he makes you laugh or cry. A truly great artist whether acting, writing or directing- Thanks for the Wonderful Memories!!!!
@@this_Joe_Smith his voice is so weird, sometimes you can't even understand what he's saying :T
Oh my gosh, I never noticed that Tracey, when Maybelle throws off the trousers, looks in amazement at her dress and then shrugs and continues dancing!!
I saw that too! What was she meaning to convey as she looked off stage?
I love Seawed voice It's so Deep and powerfull
I can hear Shoshana Bean even with her just being in the ensemble... that woman has a voice that can cut thru steel!! LOVE THIS CAST SO MUCH!
Interesting---I found her in the ensemble for the first time when I put this up, but did not know that you could hear her too. Thanks for the comment.
I'm a mega FAN of Shoshana Bean and could probably her her voice in a crowd of a thousand people, lol.
Edward Gonzales I'm the same way but with LBB!! (She was amber lol)
Edward Gonzales i really dont hear her
I follow Sally Ann Triplett on Instagram (because of 1988 Carrie) ----she posted about liking Shoshana Bean & now i see this!
The voice of the penny is so beautiful that I even shiver.
Couldn’t agree more.
Kerry Butler is so fabulous. Severely underrated singer.
i saw this many times, but got lottery tickets (front row) the night before it closed. The original cast, at this song, they tried to get me to come on stage, since I knew the dance. John Anthony Bentley 2nd wait can you come up on stage to dance or is it only the last performance I'm confused
That’s so awesome.
I always loved that Edna dances with Wilbur, I wish they had kept that in the movie’s version of the song.
Oh my gosh. I remember that. I was in front row orchestra aisle seat on middle section left. Harvey was right there! I don’t think I breathed all night he was so fantastic. How a non-Singer can upstage the cast in a musical is beyond me, but he did! So much energy and such a great show!
Will, get back to the Glee Club!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haha yes
Such an infectious number. Couldn't help dancing in my kitchen.

That’s so cool!!
You Can’t Stop The Beat is my favorite song from Hairspray.
An irresistible number.
aurora spiderwoman I know, right? My birthday is on the 25th of this month, by the way.
Omg this cast. Harvey as Edna, Matt Morrison as Link, Laura Bell Bundy as Amber. Omg.
Yes, the original cast was pretty dreamy.
WAIT LAURA BELL BUNDY?!
Don't get me wrong, I love the movie, but wow this looks like it would be so fun to see live.
Me too
I am winded just watching this.
This song is usually called, " you cant stop to breath" by the cast
I love Harvey Fierstein so talented and charismatic. XXXXX.
Yay! I'm so happy my queen LBB came out to dance at the end!!
Harvey is my favorite everything!
2:07 Mood
@@olivias2395 she's stuck somehow I don't know I only watched the movie
Saw this live, and the energy in the room was so amazing.
Saw this version of the show on Broadway. I traveled across the country to attend it. Worth every penny. Fabulous.
Dang...how much would I love to travel back in time to '02 to see the OBC in action
I love this. My sister played amber once so hairspray always reminds me of her
Omg i love this musical so munch! 2002 was a great time for musicals back then!
The stage is smaller than I expected for Broadway.
i heard this was recorded when it was still in previews
The original production of Hairspray opened at the Neil Simon Theatre and ran there for over 6 years. This performance was a couple weeks before opening, but still at the Neil Simon. Thing about Broadway stages is that they all vary. There are some very large stages and some small ones as well. Really depends on the needs of the show.
I really like Tracy's voice in this.
It's okay but personally I prefer Nikki Blonsky, as she had a much better voice in my opinion
@@ericburns9132 I like Nikki's Tracy more but i also like how you can actually hear Link in this version lol
Is no one going to mention ambers hair!? Im shocked it stayed up the entire time.
Monotone Muffin it’s probably a hair piece
It's a metallic thing they used, Laura who played her had to see the physiotherapist each week because of the neck problems it caused
I love Matthew Morrison’s voice!
For a 2002 recording, this is amazing quality!
I love cast recordings!
6:37-6:55 is the best noise ever, i hate how they lowered amber and velmas solo in the finale bc it sounds so good higher
Christopher Graham that is how it is. It is only highered in the NBC Live performance, but I green, it feels like it has more momentum when it is highered.
I've seen this company. Love this show. I've sang this song in my choir and it's hard. Breathing in the right spots
This is the best Broadway performance of YCSTB I’ve ever seen
It's from a preview, and "Hairspray"'s previews had audiences going wild.
Is that Matt Morrison as Link??
Yes!
God, Matthew Morrison was young there!!
The first time I ever saw him was when he played Sir Harry in Once Upon A Mattress with Carol Burnett, Tracy Ullman, Zoey Deschanel and Dennis O'Hare.
Manuel Orozco That is interesting
Brooke Katz It was a Wonderful World of Disney movie based on the Broadway musical of the same name which is a retelling of Hans Christian Andreson's fairy tale classic Princess and the Pea.

kerry butler oh my god she's so pretty and she sings so well
Still one of the best finales.
Only rivaled by the best. Still nothing can beat the Book of Mormon final number.
The best part is- the BOM finale was inspired by You Can’t Stop the Beat!
Still amazed how they're not falling in the orchestra.. HAHA. Okay. Lol.
Along with Turkey Lurkey Time, my favorite dance number ever!
I know it because of that movie "Camp" 💕
I really like how the broadway version redeems Velma and Amber.
And Prudy
The movie originally went in completely the opposite direction. It had Velma getting arrested, and the cop singing, "I can't" referring to arresting Velma, and then everyone else singing the "Yes, you can!" It was such a smart idea to remove that. The Broadway version works so well!

Harvey? I love you!!
Who plays penny in this? She’s awesome!!!!!
This video features the full original cast, so Kerry Butler is Penny.
she’s going to be Mrs.Norbury/Mrs George in Mean Girls broadway this spring!
Kerry butler. She’s freakin amazing
Yeh she’s good but her voice is really Whiney and kinda hard to listen to
Lane Edgecombe no it’s not that’s just how she sings listen to her other songs and covers
El Sr Shue!! Jajajaja q genial Matt!!

NBC literally did a TV movie with him a few years ago
He was in NBC Hairspray Live!
I fell in love with Penny
HOW LONG WAS WILL SHUESTER ON BROADWAY WTF
Well before glee lol
I think 1998-2007 or 2008 right before he auditioned for glee. He did some other tv stuff in between and after
Go Harvey :D
Laura sounds so different now
this must have been an absolute blast to work on

Great choreography
Yes, and I was annoyed when Twyla Tharp won the choreography Tony Award for "Movin' Out," which was a ballet consisting entirely of choreography.
“America!!..I made this myself ☺️”
Yes I saw the Original Broadway Cast with Matthew Morrison.
wow!
Kerry Butler should have been a STAR!
Matthew Morrison just has that "something extra" when he moves-----
How did I not click that Tracey's mother is the guy from Mrs Doubtfire that helped Robin's character become a woman 😂 Had to look it up
Matthew Morrison was link?! when i saw he was with this cast, I thought he was Corney Collins!
No. he played Link in the Broadway show from 1998 till like 2007 I think
@@angelamarchese9464 No. He was in Hairspray from 2002 to 2004.
Yes, he started his whole carrier on Broadway
Is that an open stage where the orchestra leader is that they were all dancing around? Oh my!
The Broadway "Hairspray" staging had a ramp or passarelle surrounding the pit.
0:10 RIGHT ON SCHEDULE!
I mean… I know nothing about this complex plan.
Linda Hart as Velma Von Tussle is LEGENDARY!!!
OMG ITS WILL SCHUSTER
Get down, Tracy turn blood and dance girl
The set looks like the one I saw in Melborune last year
Poor Laura has to dance with that huge hair price in her head😂
Yooo idk if that was supposed to happen but did Ambers sash just break 😂😂
Mr Shue!!!
This looks great, do you have the full recording?
