    One thing that's cool about Falsettos is that it was written during the AIDS epidemic and it was the writer's way of expressing his frustration with the lack of governmental action surrounding it. Therefore the "this is where we take a stand" at the end. There are other mentionings of this, it's particularly notable when the characters talk about the Reagans ("Nancy Reagan, meanest and thinnest of the First Ladies" and "yuppie pagans, modeled on the Ronald Reagans")
    Also, March of the Falsettos was supposed to be a reflection of how Trina views the men in her life, she refers to them multiple times during the beginning of Trina's Song as childish or immature or "not quite men yet" and March of the Falsettos was a sort of more extreme version to really emphasize the men's immaturity.
    Falsettoland is supposed to be like their world of comfort where only their drama is what matters. These characters are wrapped up a lot in their own problems and don't acknowledge the rest of the world around them. This is shown in the set that is made out of a cube and then once Whizzer gets sick, instead of just being the cube it's actual hospital equipment showing that they are no longer just in their own little world.

      Wow this is amazing Kaydance, thanks! After I listened to the soundtrack again, March of the Falsettos 'clicked' in my head. I mean, it's strategically in between two parts of Trina's song and on the first part she's literally singing about how men "grow but don't mature". So good! And such great info on your comment, really appreciate it ❤

    The reason this musical sounds so “Retro” or semi-classical is because this musical was originally written and performed in the 80’s during the aids Crisis. This is a revival, in which they “modernized” in a sense, but other parts were left in their original form, with “nearer sounding” background!

    • @kaidynrogers4610
      @kaidynrogers4610 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Also, The meaning of March of the falsettos, in this Song, it is sung by the four men in the show, Marvin, Whizzer,Mendel, and Jason. All of them singing in a falsetto, other then Jason. This is another take on Jason being more mature then everyone else in the show, because a falsetto is often considered a very childish and feminine vocal style. The entire first act (because act one and and act two were written several years apart, and was originally supposed to not have a second act) is about the men’s “March out of falsettoland” or Growing up. Jason’s transformation being the most obvious as his Bar mitzvah, Mendel’s being married and not being such a creep and learning to express his feelings, Whizzers is coming to terms with his own impending death, and Marvin’s being how to cope with his happiness being ripped away from him, how to keep this family together now that the main glue is gone, and him coming to terms with his sexual identity (Which is a very long battle, as we see in the prequel to the first act called “In trousers”) The reason “Trina’s song” is following and preceding is because her life and happiness are constantly being Bombarded by these childish men, as the lyrics show. She feels constantly surrounded.

    I loved this so much! Watching you react to Falsettos reminded me of when I first listened to it. These shows were originally 2 seperate one act shows that came out in 1981 (act 1) and 1990 (act 2) so that’s why it has that more classical feel to it. I recommend Next to Normal for your next musical, it’s another intimate show just like this one.

      @MigsDances 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Barbara2.0 Actually these are parts two and three of a trilogy. The first part was a one act musical “In Trousers”. The show is completely about Marvin. He is married with a son but is becoming conflicted by his latent attraction to men. He remembers all the girls and women he had different types of relationships with in his past. Which helps him decided (in true Marvin fashion) that it is better for him to be happy than to stand by restrictive societal obligations. So he leaves his family and moves in with a younger man, Whizzer Brown, who he believes will give him the real happiness that he never had with his family. This makes the irony of the following acts even more pointed. The song I’m Breaking Down was originally in this. The soundtrack is available if you wanted to listen, so you can understand the complete character arc of Marvin. From arrested development to full emotional maturity. For me the most touching song is I Am Wearing A Hat sung by the women he has known.
      As a side bar I was fortunate enough to see the first full performance in three acts of the complete work in Washington DC in the late nineties. The women from In Trousers later played the “lesbians from next door” in Falsettoland. I don’t know if or when all three acts have been performed together since then. And yes please listen to Next To Normal. It is also very emotionally complex. But easier to understand just through the songs than Dear Evan Hansen

    Okay so because you seemed pretty confused about March of The Falsettos, I'm gonna clear this up if you don't know yet;
    The song happened in Trina's head, it was all her imagination. The song is basically about how even though Marvin, Whizzer, and Mendel are grown men they still lack emotional maturity, which is why they sing in the falsetto. Jason, who is much more mature (which you mentioned throughout the show, and even Marvin states, "One day I want to be as mature as my son who is twelve and a half") doesn't sing in his falsetto so he sticks out. Basically, the song is about all of Trina's worries and insecurities about marrying Mendel and her past marriage with Marvin. While the song seems completely unrelated to Trina's song and its reprise, it was placed in a very strategic way even if it does seem to disturb all the sad feelings that you get from Trina's song. If you don't like the listen to it, there is a version on TH-cam that doesn't include it which is usually what I default to because I like to feel pain.

    The title “Falsettos” is supposed to represent the characters’ maturity and how that develops. That’s why in March of the Falsettos everyone sings in a falsetto voice except for Jason, whose goal is to mature because his father didn’t.
    I think that’s it, anyway.

    My favorite William Finn song is "A Really Lousy Day in the Universe", from his 1998 musical A NEW BRAIN, which you should check out. It's a heavily autobiographical story directly inspired by when Finn contracted an arteriovenous malformation in his brain, nearly costing him his life - and thus, it tells the story of a struggling songwriter who suddenly contracts the disease, and how it affects both his relationships with his friends, and the way he sees the world. Despite the stakes, the show has the same comically neurotic voice as William Finn's other works: for example, not only does it contain songs like "Gordo's Law of Genetics" ("The bad trait / Will always predominate!"), but throughout the show, the main character keeps getting tormented by his boss, a loathsome children's show host who wears a frog costume :)

    I don't know Falsettos so I'm happy I'm not alone as theatre nerd. Being a theatre kid doesn't mean you need to know everything, you just have a big love for it and you keep on discovering new stuff (like people who love classical music or just anything at all) . I'm always scared for people to hate me for not knowing everything, but until now I haven't had musical-friends who were mad at me for not knowing something.

    Comments, from a Falsettos fanatic:
    2:30 It is! Oft times when I'm listening to the album, I sing and act along ALL of the characters. Meanwhile my sister tends to have a concerning look in her face. Oh well
    2:50 it was written and even performed around mid-1980s, and the first Broadway show of it was in 1992ish. Fun fact, the guy who played Marvin there was Micheal Rupert, who played Callaghan in Legally Blonde Musical!
    3:05 , believe it or not, the original recording is like,,,,,1.5 times faster, it's insane. It's like listening to Hamilton, almost
    3:48 uh, yeah,,,,, 😏😏
    3:59 I LOVE ITT SO MUCHHHHHHH ABDGHSGSHSGSB I think I have a problem.....
    4:32 .........no
    I'm not sure if it's picked up, but it's pretty heavily implied that Mendel doesn't go into therapy bc he wants to help people, but rather because it's extremely high paying
    7:00 I flail around the room while I sing this 😶😶
    7:41 me tooooo
    7:48 this musical in a nutshellllll
    8:03 it's a really genius touch that I love about this musical! I've always felt, even when they're acting, that they almost come alive and become these....realistic people who actually exist?? Rather than characters on a stage. It's not something I've seen in almost any other musical
    8:32 he needs both. Desperately
    And maybe a better psychiatrist
    8:45 Mendel.....makes no attempt to hide his,,,, _feelings_ for Trina, and that kids pretty smart
    9:00 yeah,,, maybe
    I tell myself that every rewatch
    9:10 a running theme in the play is "none of these men/bots are fully mature, and this is the story of their maturing" and I love it
    10:13 bingo
    10:54 it is! It's probably the best and worst part, cuz it makes the final part of the play that much more,,,,heart-stabbing
    11:13 that song is the weirdest I've every heard, but also the most interesting?? On closer inspection, for me, the main themes I get are traditional views on masculinity and immaturity (also the small prods at the then prevalent idea that homosexuality was emasculating). It presents these views in a fitting manner-childish and immature

    This made me smile so much. Falsettos is my favorite musical of all time and I have frequent TED talks with my friends, or to myself in the bathroom to be honest, about the different themes of Falsettos. Maturity, love, winning, grief... It's always fascinating to me to see other people discover Falsettos, an absolute gem of a show that I wish more would take the time to watch. I hope you saw the proshot, it wrecks me so much. This show is just so perfect, so human and true and sincere... It's a once in a life time experience and it's so gutting and raw...
    The truth is that I'm in love with this musical and I will never get over it. I rewatch it every 6 months and listen to the soundtrack almost daily and the tears never fail to pour. Such a powerful message delivered in the most flawless of manners.

    Someone’s probably already said it, but something I find absolutely incredible is how important staging is in this show. For example, the entire set is made up of different pieces of a whole cube. However at the end, after Whizzer dies and they try to put the cube back together again, there is a piece missing. This piece is used as Whizzer’s grave. 😭😭 there are so many other things I could say because this is one of my all time favourite musicals but that was the main thing that came to mind 😍

    got more reccs for you! (get ready there's so many)
    - *Daddy Long Legs* : based off of the book by the same name. it's a 2 person musical and a proshot can be found on BroadwayHD (HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU WATCH IT: it's a very dialogue heavy show bc of the minimal cast and the album doesn't include much of it)
    - *Mozart L'Opera Rock* : in French but there's a proshot on yt
    - *Mozart!* : Also about Mozart but in German and it's more traditional theater compared to the former (there's a proshot of the 2016 revival on yt)
    - *Dracula* : also a German production & theres a proshot with subs I believe (*HIGHLY RECOMMEND* checking out Kim Junsu's [one of the Korean Draculas] performance of some of the songs afterwards)
    - *Newsies* (if you haven't seen it it should be on Disney + as a proshot)
    - *Thoroughly modern Millie* (kinda aged badly bc of the depiction of some characters but I still love the story and it was Sutton Foster's first main role in Broadway!!)
    - *Putnam County Spelling Bee* : interactive with its audience and I highly recommend trying to find a boot or full performance of it if possible though that may be hard to find for the obc
    - *Oliver!* : a classic if you haven't seen it already you should
    - *Pajama Game* : about a union that goes on strike at a Pajama Factory (the characters are really fun)
    - *Alice By Heart* : 2018 Off Broadway show that retells the Alice in wonderland story in Britain's WWII era
    - *Come From Away* : about the plane passengers that got stranded in Newfoundland on 9/11
    - *The Color Purple* : based on the book of the same name -> a coming of age story (both the 2005, 2007, and the 2015 productions are amazing)
    - *Oklahoma* : if you like more contemporary sounds compared to traditional, go with the 2019 revival! Damon Daunno (2017 orpheus) plays Curly
    - *Once on this Island* : both the obc and the revival are AMAZING, the staging of the revival is much more interactive though from what I've seen
    - *Anastasia* : slightly more accurate version of what would've been going on in Russia compared to the movie

    Since you mentioned that you enjoyed how human this show is, I’d be really interested to see you do a listen through of The Girls (I think it’s actually called Calendar Girls now but it was called the girls for most of its development). I wasn’t a fan of the changes they made for the tour version, but thankfully the cast album is from its west end run, so it’s the original in all its glory. It’s an incredibly human story which says a lot about grief while still having the comedy it needs to stop it being an outright tragedy. Admittedly though it’s not got a huge fan base so I doubt it’d draw as many views, but I got to see it in previews and a couple of times in its initial run before they revised it, and it was honestly up there as one of the best shows I’ve seen live and it’s one I kinda wish more people knew about.

    One of my favourite parts, of the times when they all came together after all the fights, was when Whizzer was in hospital. I don't think there was a line saying this but everyone just accepted the fact that Whizzer and Marvin were gay. Especially, in the 1980s (when it was set), as it was more rare to 1) come out but also 2) to be accepted. It was really sweet that they only worry/focus was to come together and just hope that Whizzer gets better, rather than fight over the fact that they were both gay.
