      Hey, as a dutchman my thoughts on Gay or European is that it's a bit stereotypical. Like the poolboy looks alot like an early 2000s Italian man. The thing is tho, a lot of Americans feel like they can compare Europe to the US and the countries in Europe as states, therefor thinking that all European countries are in a group together. While yeah we're all in the EU, we are all our own country. I view France as a completely different place from The Netherlands because it is, just like Americans view France as a completely different place. For me personally it's a bit annoying when people (mostly americans) compare for example The Netherlands to Greece just because they're both in the EU. It would be the same to compare Americans to Columbians just because they're both in the same continent (if you'd view North America and South America as one). For the rest great reaction! Really enjoyed watching your thoughts on the show :)

      While watching the musical I was afraid they'd make him mansplain everything to her and tell her she has to be less "girly" to succeed (I still think the thing with the two-in-one shampoo was a bit :/ because her taking care of her body was Not the problem, but I guess it makes sense because he wasn't really taking care of himself either. ), but they really handled that well with her embracing her style and the musical stressing that accepting help does not diminish your hard work and they turned out to be a really cute and supportive couple.

  • @juliacalhoun9491
    @juliacalhoun9491 3 ปีที่แล้ว +184

    My two favorite changes from the movie to the musical are 1) the fact that the musical actually utilizes the Bend and Snap to both remove the movie's stereotyping (in which Elle only figured out the guy was gay because he knew about shoes, as opposed to the musical, where it's "this dance move is 99% effective on anyone attracted to women; it did nothing, therefore he isn't attracted to women") and to make the Bend and Snap relevant to the main plot as well as the B plot with Paulette, and 2) the different characterization of Warner. In the movie, he's just a jerk, but in the musical, he's shown as more selfish and insecure, which I feel makes for a much more interesting character dynamic than "he's a jerk".

    • @theassortedhobbyist
      @theassortedhobbyist ปีที่แล้ว +25

      My favorite addition to the musical was Emmet becoming an actual character and having a dynamic with Elle, thus making their potential romance more engaging. While I didn't hate Emmet in the original film, at the end of the day he was just the nice supportive guy that Elle ends up with despite them not having too much interactions to solidify a friendship, let alone a romance. While I do miss the bits of Vivian and Elle bonding in the movie, I do think it was a good call to have Vivian show up at Paulette's to motivate Elle, thus making the execution of Vivian's turn from Elle's rival to friend much better in the musical.

  • @katielicheni9451
    @katielicheni9451 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Another thing they changed which I LOVED was the way Elle realises he is gay in this version. In the movie she realises because he calls her shoes "last season" and she assumes straight men don't know anything about shoes. I love the musical's version because it removes her stereotyping gay men and also ties it back to the bend and snap which was brought up earlier! (Although obviously stereotypes do come back in the song, but I think you could possibly write it off as light humour rather than the crux of the scene if that makes sense)

    It’s kinda quick but during the scene when Callahan kisses Elle, Warner and Vivienne are spying on them through the window and Vivienne pushes Warner away and she’s the only one that sees Elle pull away and slap Callahan. Hence why Warner was quick to assume Elle was sleeping her way up to the top and Vivienne was quick to defend her cuz she saw the whole scene (unlike Warner who just saw the kiss)

My opinion is she spent a lot of time to studying and later working in the internship so she straighted her hair to have more time for more important things, such as her studying and law career!

So reacting to the movie will help you and put the songs in context and would be great to react to instead of the soundtrack (like the soundtrack it's pretty much all singing)

    I have never seen the movie, just the musical on youtube, but I find it so emotional, despite how light and silly it first appears. "Chip on my shoulder" is especially motivating and "Legally Blonde" is the song I sang by myself when I was really struggling at uni last year, considered dropping out at times, and just needed to cry about it (I'm doing better now don't worry)

    I love how in the first "Serious" when Elle tries to start her own verse, Warner stops her and instead forces her to basically just sing backup for him. It is a really great way to show how Warner views Elle's place in his life: not an equal player with her own voice, just an accessery. What an absolute tool, so smarmy! I just love to hate him!

    So glad you watched Legally Blonde!! This show got me through the first few months of quarantine, I needed all that positive energy lol
    I am absolutely OBSESSED that Vivien is the one to reclaim the "Legally Blonde" lyric and spin it into an empowering anthem for Elle, and that Elle proposes at the end.
    I also love analyzing adaptations, there was so much creativity in this one. While I have some critiques of the gay representation (it's kind of stuck in 00s era humor, which doesn't age well for me, not to mention that Enid seems to be closeted for some reason), this is still by far one of my favorites musicals

    I'm way late to the party but one of my favorite things about the main song (Oh My God You Guys) is in the beginning when her sorority sisters say we love you guys Elle responds "No, I love you guys." In the finale reprise she says "No WE love you guys." That one word shiws the biggest differende between her relationship with Warner vs her relationship with Emmett!

  • @topacio3696
    @topacio3696 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    i love this musical so much, is my favorite, I could talk about it for hours. One thing I think makes it great is how she didn't go back to harvard because of love, wich is the reason why she went there in the first place, no, she went back and stayed because she loves law, she learn to love all that, she stayed for herself, not for anyone else. Also, Warner, he says in the first song ¨Since I was 2 or 3, my life was planned all neat¨, he was living the life his parents wanted him to live, but at the end he quits law school and becomes a model, he went to do what he likes, and I think is such a great thing they did this with his character, it would of been so easy to just make him a very bad person and be done with it, but life is not black and white, and considering that Elle and him were toghether for years, and Elle is no stupid, they clearly had a lovely relationship, he wasn't a complete asshole. And one last thought, when Warner proposes to Vivianne, she looks around, I don't think she looks just at Elle, I mean, they've been dating for some months and Warner just proposed to her in front of all of their classmate, i like to think that she felt pressure because it was a public proposal, I mean the way she says ¨yes¨ is weird.

    Little bit of analysis (that it took me way to long to realize): Emmett's name comes from Hebrew (the word is pronounced exactly the same) and it means "truth." Emmett is the one who sees past the blonde and sees Elle's potential and brilliance. He helps her see that in herself as well. And at the end, he's the one who reveals the truth of what Callahan did to Elle.

  • @WritingisDifficult

    Prefer the musical over the movie just based on the fact a lot of the characters get some development over the show. The biggest for me was Emmet and Elle’s relationship. They show it in the show through them working together but in the movie, we just get told, he’s going to propose after the graduation. It was something that always annoyed me in the film so I loved that they fixed that in the show.

    It might just be because I love musicals and musical reenactmnets but I love this version of Legally blonde more than the movies... yes musicals can give the actors more room to express themselves emotionally depending on how they're written but I think it also has something to do with the actors themselves who are in this musical adaptation of legally blonde. They themselves give so much to the show and the added bonus of the audience HYPING them up helps a TON!

    I have seem this twice in theatres. Once with a Broadway touring company at a theatre in Boston (appropriately enough), and once in a theatre around Seattle Washington performed by a local theatre company. It was so good both times. If you get the opportunity to see it live, i recommend it wholeheartedly
