My Dad was a ground electrician for the FW 190 in JG 54. And he always was fascinated with flying. He even developed an automatic propeller pitch adjustment to prevent engine damage. He was always a bit miffed that the Messerschmitt raked in all the glory.
Hah that's surprising to me! It seems like everything I read is people talking about how the 109 was obsolete and the 190 was far superior. Aviation enthusiasts today seem to be much more excited for the 190 than the 109, but my own perspective is limited I guess. It would have been really cool to talk to a guy who had actually been with JG 54. Their lone struggle in the Baltic is just wild to read about.
This bird and its successor the Ta-152C, Ta-152H were my favorite ones in the old IL-2 and this video proves it why it will remain so amongst WW2 Warbirds. Lots of fond memories in it.
I was one of the people who were wondering how come there was no FW-190 content on your channel. Great to see it, and the aircraft has performed exactly as I expected. Very nice.
I learned the other day that the German cannon ammo had about 6x the amount of HE in them as the allies. So they were more like mortars than cannon rounds.
That series of boom and zooms on the 3 low aircraft had me all kinds of hyped! I love these IL-2 VR videos and they're quickly becoming my favorite videos on the channel.
Glad that you’re also doing IL2 because it has a wider selection of warbirds than DCS, particularly the Spit Mk XIV. Both sims are fun in their own unique way. ✌️

Finally it's the fw 190's turn! Awesome! I have always expected the fw190 video even it's not fw190 A series, but before this video there is only an old short video in which the 190D fought with the Spitfire in this channel.
I know what you mean but in reverse...when I wake up and Internet surf the News in the mornings there's almost ALWAYS a GS and a LS video to have with my morning coffee. Puts a smile on my face to start the day here in Western Australia (even tho we are upside down) ;)
To be honest, at first I didn't pay much attention to the WW2 and WW1 videos. But I once I got into them, man these are great. This one in particular was a really great video, how big are the cannons on that thing? Making a P-47 explode like that can't be easy.
Hey GS, I dont think he did pull lead....you sure there wasn't another plane higher that got you? The shots seemed to come from above and the left in the replay, not right or below where he was, and at the moment you were KIA, that low guy did not look like he was nose on either.... I don't think we even see any visuals he fired...
In the Jane's Flight Sim games from the 90s, The FW-190 was my favorite plane to fly. Also, seeing a pattern where you say you can't be hit/killed by an opponent and then immediately eat those words.
That was awesome, GS! Keep the videos com*SPLAT* . . . emmm . . . ing. Great to see the mighty 190 show up on the channel. Maybe it's just the aesthetics, but I always was a fan of the A8 and such (radials) as opposed to D model (long nose), even though the D is considered by many as THE Focke Wulf to be.
Bugga, now thats one way to stuff up your day. OH well we live and learn hey. But up till then you were doing so dam well. Love your style Sir. One day would like the privilege to be able to join you.
Gosh - the sound of a .50" calibre bullet going through the cockpit and brain contents splattering on the instrument panel at the end, was just a bit graphic, don't you think? However, I think you make a great point with your flying, about the FW-190-D being perhaps the best piston single engine fighter the axis had. Certainly, when put up against the best the Allies had, all other things being equal, it was the skill of the pilot that determined the outcome of the battle. As you proved with your excellent gunnery skills - even the toughest planes such as the P-47, could not withstand being hit by this fighter's cannons, which turned very solid metal into perforated, burning confetti, in very short order. In the hands of a skilled pilot, the "Dora" really was the ultimate "Butcher Bird"!
That bird was only equaled by the P-51 and the latest Spitfire.. armor around the pilot left the aviator really well protected. Good armament. Great speed and maneuverability.. Definitely one the Luftwaffe should be proud of..
The first clip had me worried as you drop altitude and energy in a furball rather than boom and zoom from the outside. Great gunnery. That last 47 then going vertical is always a deathwish. If anything extending or possibly breaking and pulling them closer, using only as much angle as necessary to avoid guns with roll and rudder, then going for rolling scissors might see you make it out wounded. But doubtful. The 190 has a great climbrate and speed, that should be used over a greater distance imo. Cool to hear the difference between trackir and vr also 👍 Some target fixation but thats just narrating in real time and taking video, so no way to avoid that 🤷♂️ But those 3 p51s you hit in succession was real skill shit. Ida dropped back on that first 51 and missed or got jumped by the next 2, so very nice 👍
LOL the players in IL2 must be so happy you are there to shoot them down. Those last guys that shot you down must of high five each other when they got back to base. We just killed Growling Sidewinder. Good on them. LoL great video.
WW1 dogfight is like a fistfight, WW2 air battle is like a knife fight, Korean is like a gunfight, today is like a missiles fight, tomorrow is like a robot fight. this is why I like WW1 and WW2 dogfights. more fun to watch.
Dammit! I'm a little behind the curve...just bought the TrackIR to use with IL-2. I see how difficult/awkward it is to maintain head position behind the sight during a gun pass...
The 190D is probably the best fighter of WWII with great speed and excellent armament. The two 20mm cannons are quite close to the fuselage thereby not being problematic with convergence.
It had its strengths but it was by no means the best fighter of the war. The Spit Mk XIV, Tempest V, -4 Corsair, Ki-84 (build quality notwithstanding), Ta 152 and 109 K4 were all probably better aircraft on balance. The D9s attributes make it really well suited to pressing home an energy advantage, as long as the pilot is smart and keeps it pointed in a straight line, but if it doesn't enter the fight with that advantage - or the pilot is an idiot and blows that advantage - it will struggle against aircraft with better power/wing loadings, which can either build up an energy advantage more easily, do more with less energy, or both.
Love all the IL-2 stuff. Much more my speed with piston engines and guns instead of jets and radar guided missiles shooting from beyond the horizon almost
