Something I always noticed about Howard is that he constantly makes fun of and teases everyone around him and enjoys it. But when someone does it back to him, he gets all butt hurt and pouts about it. Dude really couldn’t take what he gives to others could he? And don’t even get me started on Bernadette, a total bully who is verbally abusive to her husband and all her friends
Howard's teasing is good natured and he apologizes if he hurts someone. Sheldon is a vile vindictive sociopath who actually believes everyone else is subhuman.
It's funny but if either of those characters were actually socially aware enough to pull this off, they wouldn't be as disconnected and dismissive as they are every other minute of their lives. They kind of had to metagame this, as obviously they could pull it off as actors, and this is a classic in acting, but "Sheldon" specifically has almost no empathy, his version of someone else would be somewhere between wooden and sardonic. They got the sardonic, but he was too personable. Or long rant short, they don't have the "emotional intelligence" to actually pull this off.
So Sheldon insults Howard for years and no one cares, but the moment Sheldon gets a taste of his own medicine (quite literally) even Amy has to react. I really disliked Sheldon and Amy in this one.

Something I always noticed about Howard is that he constantly makes fun of and teases everyone around him and enjoys it. But when someone does it back to him, he gets all butt hurt and pouts about it. Dude really couldn’t take what he gives to others could he? And don’t even get me started on Bernadette, a total bully who is verbally abusive to her husband and all her friends
Howard's teasing is good natured and he apologizes if he hurts someone. Sheldon is a vile vindictive sociopath who actually believes everyone else is subhuman.

It's funny but if either of those characters were actually socially aware enough to pull this off, they wouldn't be as disconnected and dismissive as they are every other minute of their lives.
They kind of had to metagame this, as obviously they could pull it off as actors, and this is a classic in acting, but "Sheldon" specifically has almost no empathy, his version of someone else would be somewhere between wooden and sardonic. They got the sardonic, but he was too personable.
Or long rant short, they don't have the "emotional intelligence" to actually pull this off.

Everybody Loves Raymond did the episode "The Skit" where they basically did the same thing. They showed that Ray and Debra could dish out jokes against others but were totally incapable of taking them. Frank and Marie turned the tables on them and they were really upset, but it was funny. That premise has been used a LOT on sitcoms. I'm pretty sure it's a trope at this point!
