I finally tried the 2/3 alcohol 1/3 fabric softener mixture on the piano at my church. It is a 7 foot Lester from 1948 with extremely hard hammers. They were so hard that I could not use needles. They just wouldn't penetrate from about E5 up. WHAT a difference this has made. Now the tone is more pleasing and not so brittle, with longer sustain. You do such a service to this industry by publishing these videos. Big fan here!
If lanolin insertion or replacement would achieve a more desirable result, would there be any utility in making an airtight glove or shroud for the hammers, applying a coating of lanolin on the hammer surfaces, fitting the glove, then pulling a vacuum for a few minutes to draw air from the felt, then releasing the vacuum so that atmospheric pressure forces the lanolin into the felt. A similar method is used to infuse UV-cure optical adhesive into small star cracks in laminated automotive windscreens.

@@ChernobieffPiano ok will do, I have put a little near the staple on both sides to decent effect. But it’s incredible the transformation with the cheaper products! Any changes to the formula since then? I’ve been trying to follow along in the forum. Thanks for sharing this!
I can only speak to which I have used. All is available to me, but not elsewhere. I know Downey is used successfully. Just make sure not to use one that will discolor the hammer.

How long were you waiting on average between sprays of softener and hairspray?
Does it make the sound brighter? Because my grand piano is very soft
