I saw them in 1984 in an alley in skid row Los Angeles. They had just returned from touring and used the Uhaul roof as a stage and a generator for power. 100 people there maybe. SWA went on first.

yeah, literally. I just wish the 5 piece black flag lineup of Henry Rollins, Greg Ginn, Dez Cadena, Chuck Dukowski, and Bill Stevenson (or Chuck Biscuits on drums) would've recorded both "My War" and "Slip It in". It would've sounded amazing had the 5 piece Black Flag lineup would've perpetuated and such, yeh:).
I agree, I like him singing too unfortunately his vocal chords weren't meant for singing. I saw them 3 times, 1979 when I was 16, 1982 and 86. 86 show was the worst, it had henry spoken word crap.
@@jefrey5578back then, Henry hadn't perfected spoken word/public speaking .. He's very good now ..I saw him in 91 do his spoken word stuff, and by then, he was just telling stories.. Very entertaining
@@jefrey5578it wasn’t just that, it had the Ginn stoner crap too. Saw that same tour. Gone opened and you could see he was far more into that than Black Flag.
Cool!!! For this show the dresscode was a selfmade Suicidal Tendencies t-shirt. Photographer Glen E. Friedman then shot these for their first album cover. (He told this story himself somewhere).
Very cool footage. At 00:22 Chuck jumps and plays a chord. His bass was so loud at shows. Between songs he would just touch the strings and it would fill the hall.
Rollins (I think) gave Dukowski's bass "noodling" between songs a certain term. You can hear it on live recordings and just barely behind Reyes' talking: th-cam.com/video/IFmTImeZCRE/w-d-xo.html . It's certainly menacing.
I got to see the Rollins Band back about 15 years ago in a small club front row in East Toronto and it's was awesome, Black Flag was awesome. This is so cool.
We love punk rock. We love this, and one thing we all can agree on? We would NOT want to be Mike Muir's neighbors. On a side note, it's astonishing to ponder that Rollins never took drugs, never took a drop of alcohol. Rollins is one of those people who is already so amped up out of his mind on baseline brain chemistry that putting him on speed or cocaine would send him literally over the cliff and into the ocean never to be seen again. When he yells "Six Pack" it's a six pack of abs or coca cola. The man is a marvel.
Rollins definitely did acid during this era and appears to be on it during this show. He tries to downplay it and act like he only did it once or so. But apparently he was quite the acidhead 83-84. Dukowski was the one who got him into it, to "loosen him up".
It's been rumored that there was some beef between the bands or their fans and this show was put on as a sign that everything had been settled and was cool. Is that true or just bullshit?
Wait, I thought this was the Black Flag show where a bunch of Suicidal Tendencies fans were being called together to deliver their drawn pictures for the cover of the debut Suicidal Tendencies album.
TheInnerStation thanks I read the story on it like you said and it's so cool. He also said that the Garage was not Mike Muir's but infact one of the ST roadies grandmothers garage
Dynamite stuff! Wasn't this their last show with Dez? Henry clearly flying high on something (this WAS during his acid phase after all). And BF, as always, sounding like intensity personified (wait, does that make sense? Ah, fuck it!) People can dump on Rollins as they want (and admittedly he comes off a bit of a self-important asshole--still) but the guy had a powerhouse voice and an intense charisma and perfectly suited Flag. And no matter how much Ginn is dismissive of him now, he had Rollins as his singer for 5 years and never once dumped him or broke the band up (prior of course to their ultimate breakup) so Ginn must've thought he had "something" too.
Dez's last official show would have been at Adams Avenue Theater, San Diego, CA, 4/29/83 , and that show can be heard here... th-cam.com/video/J6wtsitHZbA/w-d-xo.html . Thanks for listening!
I'm _not a fan_ of Henry Rollins today, but in the days of Black Flag's precipice, as in this video, he was one of the greatest hardcore punk vocalists to ever abuse a microphone. He is magnificent in this video. I saw them 4 times in the 80 & was always amazed at how austere and in character with the song Rollins was. Now I'll say something unpopular...I like the 2023 Black Flag & Mike Vallely. They're not the best version of Black Flag, Mike is not the best but he is very, very good. Seen them 4 times since 2020 & 2 weeks ago 2 nights in a row and was completely blown away. It's not the 80s anymore, but Black Flag is still fire IMO.

The Opera House?
Scream will stand for a century as the song of Youth vs Eunuch-Modernity, along with Black Sabbath 's Cornucopia.
Greg Ginn looking like Johnny Ramone.
Yup. But Johnny never wore bootcut jeans...😁
They also seemed to have similar effects on the people that were close to them.
I love what Stevenson brings to “The Scream”

The beginning of "scream" Henry looks like he's a fucking lion sizing up its prey,,,that's a heavy stare.
Rollins looking insane without drugs, so intense!
Can’t confirm but wasn’t this one of the times Hank dropped acid?

That's my understanding. They played San Diego the night before, which I guess would have been Dez's 'official' last show.
