The frustration and amazingness of his voice - Due to not getting any girls in his prime, not actually being able to sing, and the undue pressure from Greg Ginn to perform beyond his capabilities...well, it makes Keith Morris look like a pussy. Little 5'2" Keith Morris couldn't even hold a candle to DEZ! Dez is the real deal - even more real than Rollins who was really a jock at heart who loved the fame, BS poetry and totally lame acting career that pole vaulted him to legendary status - one of the great injustices of history... While Rollins basks in his glory and money and silver hair, Poor Dez is just strumming on a broken 4-string guitar, with his poor hygiene, horrible diet, alcohol-laden smell, and greasy hair at some lonely bar near L.A. I am crying for Dez...Crying! !!!

people put down rollins but he was the only one who went the distance. fronting flag was the toughest gig in show business and henry brought it every show.

None of these other fuckers could’ve put up with the constant touring, lack of money and food and Greg’s increasing bullshit and 5 hour daily practice... no one else would’ve or did put up with it. Not only that, Henry flew that flag for years and to this day and exposed their music to many millions more through his success. He’s always said that was Greg and Chuck’s band. He is the face and voice of Black Flag if you like it or not folks. You keyboard shuts don’t have an ounce of the backbone or commitment he’s always had. People are jealous that he has something they don’t so they look for things to pick at. He’s an inspiration

It is blatantly true that Black Flag eventually became what they didn't want to be initially, another hardcore band repeating the same music again and again. Say what you want, But Rollins Band's The End of Silence is a fantastic record, of which Black Flag is renowned today due to Rollins Band's commercial success.

Dez = Atomic Blast on Vocals. I LOVE his Gritty, Tough-Sounding, "I-Just-Gargled-Paint Thinner-Then-Swallowed-A-Yard-Of-Sandpaper-Before-Kicking-Ass" Vocals. Second Only to Keith (As my favorite Singer for Black Flag). In my opinion, Dez is SUPER-Under rated. His vocals fit perfectly with Black Flag's "Fuck this and Fuck You, I'm Not Taking Any More Of Your Bullshit"'s Message. Keith Morris' s California Surfer Dude's-Let's-Party-Destroy-Then-Get-Laid's Vocals are the Ultimate. Dez's Vocals have always been Riot-Inducing to me. That Pre-Rollins Era of Black Flag was Intense and Unflinching in it's greatness. Cheers to All of the Singers of Black Flag (Up until 1986's Line-Ups. This new pretendo version in name only farce is weak as shit to me).

Search for some recent Joe Carducci interviews he discusses two issues, 1. Apparently Dezo's voice would burn out pretty quickly on tour, and 2. the Damaged tunes were written as one guitar tunes but recorded with two.
I saw Black Flag three times in the 80s. Then, I didn't like Rollins, because he'd grown out his hair, wore those tiny gym shorts, looked like a jock, or a "rock star." Now that we're all getting old, I have to say - I like all the BF vocalists. I like Henry because he came from a very humble background, and he's very earnest. Keith, Ron, Dez, I just think they're all great! I guess my favorite is Ron. I saw him play a few years ago, touring with Greg, and he said really funny things about Darby Crash - how Darby had fucked up, because if he hadn't killed himself, he'd be a huge star now, would never have had to work a day in his life.

I like Dez's vocals alot better than Henry Rollins. But to me the best BF vocalist will always be Ron Reyes. His vocals sounded like nothing ever heard before. A shame he didn't last in either incarnation.

I think the best is still the original Kieth Morris man Dez is close but I think Morris brings and energy like no one else could. You feel it on Circle Jerks first album too. But to each their own
For me, Ron Reyes was their worst singer.
Dez vocals were always my favorite cuts from Black Flag although I definitely appreciated the loose and raw Keith days, and certainly there was stuff Rollins pulled off that the others couldn't. Saw Black Flag 3x in the early 80s (all with Rollins), 3 entirely different experiences but they brought it each show.
My personal favorite was Ron. His vocals epitomized the angry/snotty SoCal sound.

My understanding was that at the time Dez wanted to play guitar. Having to sing this material every night was wrecking his throat. Henry came into the picture after the band agreed to the idea.

Although I like all BF vocalists, Dez will always be my favorite. It's not hard to realize though that Dez was not going to be able to sing like that for ever. I personally knew a punk singer back then in my local scene that ripped his vocal cords singing like that. But switching to second guitar gave Greg Ginn more space to solo, which is one thing the actual Damaged album has over this. But it's not enough to stop me liking this version more. Thanks for uploading this.

I noticed nobody ever mentions ROBO..he was also a big part of the band..he had his own style..he was better than bill.
ROBO is great, but could hardly hold a candle to Bill.
Black Flag with Chuck Biscuits on drums and Dez and Greg on guitars was a great lineup. Chuck was so intense and wild, almost like a Punk Keith Moon. Black Flag with Emil on drums was also good.

Thanks so much man for posting that. ROBO's the type of personality - "Obscure..., not known..., often impersonated..., seldom duplicated...."
ROBO is (in my opinion) the prototypical Black Flag drummer. He laid the foundation for their "sound".
Ask Bill Stevenson what he thinks..., he too, will tell you ROBO (as being the most important drummer in Black Flag's history).
As I have mentioned before on another video, Robo was like a modern day Charlie Watts. It's never flashy but he never misses a beat.
Sigmund Hightower : yes, billy has declared Robo to be one of his favorite drummers especially Robo's use of his arms to drum as opposed to his wrists.

What ever version, this song crushes with fury at reality in demented despair beyond repair-- no matter who the vocalists is-- singing-- "NO MORE!" unrelenting! Yeah! Peace.

It looks like it’s a compilation of Dez. So it’s from the 7’ and Everything went to black. Not sure about the machine. But Dez did a one night stand with flag and recorded literally everything past, present, and future black flag.

This is sung with the exact nuances that Henry used when the "damaged" LP was recorded. But Dez Did it first. Which means that Henry followed Dez's blueprint. Henry brought no originality or new spin at all to the vocals of Damaged. Just noticing is all. Not judging. Its interesting though
There are quite a few differences I’ve noted but overall the Influence can be found in just as many places as it can’t. He certainly did bring some of his own flare. You have to wonder, maybe they picked Rollins for his natural similarities to Dezs vocals. He wasn’t kicked from vocals, he chose guitar. So, that tells me the band didn’t want to necessarily scrap that style and energy.

Yeah Dez, Ron, and Kieth were great, Dez and Ron were my faves. Kieth found home with group sex which is up there with best of all time records........when Henry joined, well Damaged was alright but it turned into a ghost immediately following. Robo was a hammer! Blag Flag made a huge impact in the face of music and left a stain that never came off. SUPERLOVE

I like all the Black Flag singers. They all have their unique singing styles but Dez is my favorite because his vocals sound like he smoked Paul Malls and drank bourbon with a broken glass chaser.
There was another version recorded with Dave Turgeon on vocals,. He was never an official member of the band but did audition. I wonder if that recording even exists.

I love all “Classic Black Flag” 1978-1986 esp the early era. I personally like all 4 of the original singers. Rollins was always my leave favorite of the 4 but his stage presence was amazing. As long as it’s not the skater guy they have now lol

I love dez but I’ve always preferred henry. Henry’s scream just doesn’t sound as forced as dez’s. Dez’s vocals always sounds like his testicles are boutta pop while henrys sounds way more natural. Idk I can’t explain it. Just personal preference.

I went to see a gig with whatever band DEZ was with in 1989 thinking it would have to be good, but it was nothing like this. It was slow and weak in comparison.

I got a hold of Black Flag dameged w/ Rollins and I thought it was the shit....in my head ....loose nut....my war....sounds like punk rock to me .... Budweiser or Guinness ...it's beer essentially....but I prefer ...8 point Natty Daddy ...enter GG Allin.
What I WISH would e happened was that BF put out an actual recorded record of those demons with the Chuck Biscuits lineup! If anyone hasn't ever heard those demos ...holy shit. That would have been an album! Basically a mix of My War and Slip. Biscuits makes those songs ten times better. And with the double guitars as well. They are on you tube here. The Complete 1982 demos. I know because if legal shit they weren't allowed to release anything , but they should have recorded as a record, then released it when the time came.

Dez and Keith were the best. Hank R. had some charisma, but he wasn't actually a singer. I'd give a lot of credit to the Who's Got the 10 1/2 album though -- it's a great live record.
