Does Table Tennis Have a Match Fixing Problem?

  • Betting on table tennis is big business, but the so called 'pro' leagues that are available to gamble on are nothing like the professional table tennis fans are used. In this video I discuss the challenges posed by table tennis tournaments such as the Moscow Liga Pro, the SetKa Cup and the TT cup to the integrity of the sport as a whole.

    Price-fixing aside, I have to admire the stellar professionalism in the presentation of these matches, right down to the matching of ITTF/WTT side-on cam views. Sheer class all the way. With more improvements I hope to see top-notch frame-doubling, slideshow framerates, cam-switch editing on service all the way to the latest innovation at Lagos games: a single monologuing commentator who knows nothing whatsoever about the sport (there's nothing more refreshing than an outsider-perspective) and is able to read from a clipboard sheet of fascinating statistics, such as the complete match scores of each game Dimitri Ovtcharov played over the past year.

      Also why do you think this guys play non-stop every single hour . Even on Christmas eve or New year Eve there are players designated to play . There is a Guy on TH-cam Who show exactly how some referees of this tournaments are basically watching live odds during games. The player Who have the most money stacked on him shall lose the game . It s simple
      For me the most fixed are :
      1.TT CUP, Setka cup (ukraine)
      2. TT elite series (poland)
      3. Moscow liga pro& Czech liga pro

      Guilty, but I’ve played it when I was a kid for fun against my brother. Dad had a ping pong table and played during his years as a marine in the mid to late 70s in Fallbrook and Oceanside, Camp Pendleton etc… After recently developing an addiction to betting on Table Tennis, I really have a desire to now actually learn how to play( for fun most likely) I don’t think I would be a great candidate at 36 yrs old and battling cancer to make any amateur competitions but the sky is the limit

    How shocking! Were any of the matches shown fixed, well I bet they were, (no pun intended).
    I'm a former recreational player in my mid-sixties - and not in the best of health. Yet, having watched the video, I reckon that given a couple weeks of practice, I could beat some of the 'elite' players on display.
    There can be no other reason as to why such poor quality matches are 'streamed', other than to facilitate the betting market, and in this respect, anyone stupid enough to bet on such matches is a fool unto himself.

    • @TableTenniswithAsh

      It's hard to know which games are specifically fixed so I don't know if the ones I have shown are. But it definitely goes on a lot in these leagues. The Adam Green case in Australia confirmed this.

    The most rigged sport in any sport. 1v1, keeps it simple, simple is the nature of the sport too, hell I used to play locally and was decent. It isnt the same to rig an 11v11 football match as it is to rig a 1v1 hitting a small ball around. Fonbet supports it all, has a 1k bet limit. Fonbet is Russian. 😂

    This was definitely an eye-opener for me. I never bet on anything. I love table tennis and am an amateur player, but I had no idea about these "leagues". I lived in Ukraine for a couple of years - it was the most corrupt country I've ever seen, even more so than Russia. You're right though, these leagues look like they've been set up for the sole purposed of extracting money from gamblers.

    It's already a morally bankrupt sport through and through, including the top players. Almost all players are deliberately serving illegally (shielding the ball on serve with head/shoulders), and boosting their bats. Either shielding serve and boosting bats should be made legal (as it used to be), or the rules should be enforced. It's disgusting that young players are brought up in an environment where the rules are openly flouted to huge advantage of the cheats, and they are allowed to get away with it. What sort of example does that set ? A very bad one.

    • @TableTenniswithAsh
      @TableTenniswithAsh  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The serving issue is certainly a major talking point right now. The players know they are serving illegally but there is very little enforcement. Why wouldn't you serve illegally if no one is going to call you out on it? With prize money, ranking points and a career at stake, I'd probably do the same

      @@johangamb I think players feel they have to currently, not because they think it's right. Just to be clear, I serve legally when I play in my local league because amateur leagues are built on fair play, and there is no-one career at stake. All I'm saying is that the pressures are different when you are a professional. The players need the help of officials and umpires to know that their opponent will be called out if they serve illegally. Otherwise it's not a level playing field.

    I saw the total prize money of the top pros this morning, wasn't that much compared to other sports. When you have professional events but little reward then there is definitely the opportunity for match fixing. The equivalent ranked pro in tennis is probably earning 10x on what a TT player earns. I think these leagues have been set up for the express purpose of ripping people off. Seems these have been setup by the bookies themselves. Also, Look at the 2024 ITTF World Cup. If that wasn't rigged for Ma Long to win i am a bad judge. He beats WCQ 4-0, (because apparaently he changed his serve), in the semi final. And then comes back from 0 - 3 and 1 - 5 down in the final to that choker. I am convinced it was RIGGED. Ma Long hasn't done anything for years. Funnily enough, he's done nothing since. Disgraceful fraud that was.

I am rated at about 1000, but I have beaten plenty above me. And as for bet fixing it's easy. You can possibly say with some confidence that Match fixing doesnt occur in proper ITTF events. But what about Spot fixing. It occurs in Cricket at the highest level, several Players from Pakistan were jailed for it , if memory serves me right. For those who dont know, Spot fixing is where a Player intentionally makes an error or breaks a rule..an example would be a double Net on serve in TT. Millions could be bet on that.

    • @TableTenniswithAsh
      @TableTenniswithAsh  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Chitapool-cr2ii It's interesting you bring up cricket. I follow cricket quite closely and match fixing has been a major issue in it, like you say with spot fixing. In general, it appears that you can only bet on the outcome of individual games and matches rather than things like serves on the legal betting markets but I don't what you can bet on in the illegal markets. It would be interesting to know what you can bet on there.
