Do you know if anyone tried creating or developing an option to moderate as an admin with 'guest' speakers? If I want to say host some speakers for a panel and stream the jitsi out as a live broadcast? to be able to control the speaker rubrics and the background without participating in the actual feed, sort of like a director who just sits in the control room and is able to choose what it would look like? Is there a feature to add layers such as graphic banners? anyone had any experience with that? @dottotech
I used Zoom to do my classes.. 40 minute limit just kicks all of us out. I was searching for something like Jitsi. Glad to know more about Jitsi through the video.. Hats off !!
I got a text from my sister-in-law that my wife's sisters--spread throughout the country--are planning to sing Happy Birthday to her via Jitsi. I had never heard of Jitsi and found this very informative video. I'm sold!
I have looked at this and use it personally. I have found that the limitations such as anyone being able to eject someone from the meeting disappear when you set up your own server. And when you do that for a business, you can integrate it into your web page and phone apps. When you consider the security gains, this beats Zoom.

One of my students suggested it to me cus I was using the non-paid version of Zoom. Now, Im loving Jitzi. The video quality is amazing and the best of it is that is free.
A quick note first: The trouble to join is an iOS problem, it happens to Zoom and all other apps because Apple doesn't trust them to give them permission to use Mic and/or Cam. Also, it is a ONE TIME grant permission thing from settings, you can do beforehand; and then you'll join in one click. I am a HUGE fan of Zoom, but sorry if this sounds like cheating! I crush on HARD on smart things like this Jitsi app! It is so smart and amazing! I am thinking about using it to host guests into my AstroGate بوابة الفضاء channel. Thanks for the demo and discussion - very helpful. In early August I participated in a world-wide conference that was run using Jitsi, integrated into a [custom-built?] calendar-type web interface. Over 1800 people participated over 9 days (not all at the same time!) and overall it was a great success. It was for the international language, Esperanto, and our local (Australian) Esperanto Association is seriously thinking of using it for national conference in January 2021.
Never heard of Jitsi. thanks for not only going through the interface, but for going into trouble to doing the test drive, testing different options and showing different scenarios of usage! Huge thanks!
Thanks, Steve. I'm a solopreneur who hates paying for subscriptions when there is a free option! I really loved your tutorial and have now subscribed. I need to play around with the Google Calendar integration and providing future meeting links. This is going to be a great way for me to connect with clients. Keep up the great work!
We have been using Jitsi for months with no problems. Excellent audio and video. I have the meeting link bookmarked so one click there then one click to allow mic and camera then one click to join meeting. -- -- -- I'm in like flint!
Excellent review! Thanks! I have used Jitsi and Zoom. There are number of excellent open source programs and I'd love to see reviews of them.
@@dottotech For the most part I'm able to use the google suite for 95% of what I do. I really like your channel your videos are so enlightening, thank you. I used Jitsi first time last Sunday and it was really good. I am an avid user of Zoom and I think Zoom is great but like you I don't mind jumping onto a Jitsi meeting.
Hey Steve, another great presentation. One suggestion, have the participants using their smartphones change their camera from portrait view to landscape view before they log in. Be safe.
My son, living 300 kms away, has been bugging me to get this utility. I stumbled on this video today, and hoping my less than stellar technical skills will be up to the challenge. Looks less complicated than Zoom, which I haven't tried yet.
Love this video. Someone talk to me today about this app and I was searching solid information about it, thanks you.. your video was my winner for understanding the app. Saludos, from Venezuela. I like your style.
Great overview. Thanks much. What I'm finding with Jitsi that I don't with the others is that when you go to the link it opens the camera immediately. I'm used to getting a preview so I can make sure the camera is showing what I want it to before joining the session. I had an embarrassing moment with that one. Did I miss something? How can I set it up to give me a preview first? Also, I heard that, unlike the others, Jitsi allows multiple speakers to be heard at the same time. Is that true?
Hi Steve, I have known about Jitsi for over a year now however I have not had the need to use it that much. Things have changed over the years and I will be using it more often than Zoom. I also wanted to let you know that you did an excellent job on your Jitsi review and that I subscribed to your you tube channel. I'm so glad you liked Jitsi and would like to stay in touch. I will be joining webinar Wednesday this week. Have a great week!!!
I have heard of Jitsi before, and there is bluejeans but I agree, it is better than Google Meet by far. As you said in an earlier video, there are extensions you can install on Chrome but jee whiz, not everyone has the ability to do that so you limit your particants if you rely on them getting extensions. I like push to talk and gridview.
I've found on the Mac (Catalina) is that with Safari & Firefox, screen sharing options are restricted to sharing the screen only. Using Chrome or Edge instead allows for sharing an application window and/or a browser tab.
Great review - I only started using Jitsi recently, when I joined a certain online tech community that's heavily orientated towards open source, and I have to say I'm very impressed. The only things I don't like about Jitsi is that its virtual backgrounds don't work very well, and the user interface isn't quite as clean as Zoom.
I agree, but it would be interesting to see how the quality holds up in larger meetings I wonder if google meat would maintain the quality where Jisi might drop off
Same for iPadOS and macOS too. But this is a plus to me. I had to use Skype for three workshops I recently had to attend virtually and the fact that the presenter can turn cameras off and on without asking you bugs me and I hate being on camera or being photographed, so I just didn't allow Skype access to my MacBook's camera, just the microphone.
Great Video, Thank You. Our Dev team is building out a Dating Application and website for us and they had this software as the main video and audio option. I was asking about what it was, this video explains it in full detail, it seems like a good option.
Brilliant review! Glad you decided to try it out. I had never heard of this platform before. Not sure how it is right now in 2021 but I'm definitely gonna be trying it out.
Thank you ver much for this video! It's a nice app but people has to learn to use it! I had a bad experience with Jitsi as no one had a tutorial prior to the meeting and the host was kicking me out of the meeting all the time I was trying to help.
Jitsi has stolen my heart. Thank you for the review. I was looking for something like this and as I researched building one for my personal use, I discovered Jitsi meet. I don't like Zoom because of my privacy concern as it's got its root with China. The self-hosting is of particular interest to me. This has made my day! Thanks again. How I hadn't discovered this video for over a year is beyond me. Subscribed btw.
Great video. Been trying to find something other than Skype, Google or zoom to have family conferences since I live abroad. Thanks again! Greetings from Sweden!
I've been using Jitsi for my book group for a month or two. Unless something's changed - don't have time to look now - it only works properly with the Chrome browser. It's worse than that though. I forgot this, clicked on the meeting link and it started in my default browser, Firefox. Then after 20 minutes it crashed, ouch! Enjoyed your presentation, thanks Steve.
Jitsi works with Chromium based browsers, that is, in addistion to Chrome, at least with Opera, Vivaldi, Brave and the new MS Edge. Unfortunatle not with Firefox, for explanations please see github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet/issues/4758#issuecomment-604463127.
@@ArneLarssonHfors Thanks for the link. I actually read the whole page from top to bottom. If I understand correctly a big part of the problem is FF not implementing some protocol correctly. They developed ways to work around that issue, but also pushed the FF team to resolve some of the issues causing problems for Jitsi. On april 21 they announced FF 76 should work much better. Also support for Safari is being worked on.
Here it is almost a year after you make the video, and only now am I finding out about Jitsi... or you for that matter. Thank you for the intro to the ... I guess you would call it a web-app. New subscriber. :)
Thank you for this demonstration. Two comments / questions: 1) From what I could see, anyone can kick anyone else out of a Jitsi meeting. Is this still true? Cannot the person initiating the meeting control this at least? 2) I deal with a number of older people and the problems with non-Chrome type browsers is a serious limitation. We kept getting "browser not supported" messages from those using Firefox. Is there any cure to this shortcoming as yet? Thanks to all the commentators for their inputs.
@@crossleydd42 If this is true, it is a serious limitation, especially for my family, as I have pushed them into Firefox for quite some time. This seems a real shame, because otherwise this appears to be an excellent communications program.
Great video. Glad to see you gave Jitsi a look. One of Jitsi's limitations is it much prefers, if not requires Chrome browser. I have been able to get Opera and Firefox to work, but can be a bit temperamental. Keep up the great work!!
Google Meet also allows you to share your tabs via the Cast tab feature now which includes audio - rather than screen sharing, etc. Works quite well. But I prefer Jitsi.
As others have mentioned, the big downside to Jitsi is that it only works reliably in the Chrome browser, so that will be a limiting factor for some users if they aren't amenable to using Chrome.
I was researching video conference options for an amateur brass band (sort of) organisation I'm part of when I came across this video (ironically my search string was "google hangouts video conference demo") After seeing your video and checking out some of the comments I am going to try to push Jitsi, even though the person in charge wants me to try Zoom. I'm a big fan of open source and I agree it is not always end user friendly, but this may be a (the?) game changer. Edit to add: I'm using Brave with a shitton of addons and ad blockers and I love the fact that the Jitsi website isn't inundated with external scripts and trackers.
Hello! Thank you so much for the informative video. For some reason, I don't see the option (the "i" icon) which would generate a link to share on TH-cam. Any thoughts on that?!
Excellent presentation. The Linux users group of which I am a member plans to try Jitsi at its next meeting. I am optimistic that the trial will be successful and that we will begin using Jitis as our standard video conferencing product. I was a little apprehensive about switching platforms, but your video cleared up my concerns.
Can we pin or enlarge the screen of one or two participants even though they are not speaking, as I have to hold yoga classes and I want to see closely the postures
Your last comment it doesn't replace Zoom, can you please elaborate more around that and why? I really dislike Zoom which I wont go into here. I have also been looking at Jami, so would be interested in your view on this other Opensource option.
Very interesting! Does the Jitsi mobile app require attendees to create an account or can they join a meeting like Zoom without having to create an account?
I discovered this in March 2022. I'm wondering how the audio quality would sound if a person on the other end would use a proper microphone. Have you tested this if this would be interesting for Podcasters and if the audio quality is better than Zoom?
I discovered that product when I was a freelancer is Paris. If I remember things well, the creator was a Bulgarian guy doing his Phd in in Strasbourg. (+/-2005) I was completely bashed by what this student had developed compared to the then expensive ruling Webex. I tried to convince some of my clients to stop shelling out money to Webex, but for the same reasons you mention Steve.... Open Source was not their cup of tea. At the end of the day I sold more consultancy implementing crappy proprietary Windows applications. Simply could not live on Linux and Open Source at that time
Thanks so much for this great video. I love Jitsi, but occasionally find a delay between picture and audio . . . the audio comes in late. Short of shutting down and clicking back in, is there a way to correct that? Warm thanks for any help.
I really like your video! I just used jitsi tonight and noticed that the sound may be a problem...like when I talk, people who are using phones can hear the echos, of course I can too. I don't remember this happened in zoom before. Would love to hear more about it... Perhaps it will be good to have people use headphones?
Hello, thank you for your brilliant explanation. I am going host meeting next week and I want to know if I can share my screen to with the others. What is time limit? Thank you.
I like Jiti and have been using it a bit. Its biggest limitation (at least for my usage) is that smartphone users can't share their screens. They are working on this so hopefully corrected soon. I do hate that the default option on the public server doesn't request user's names on joining a meeting (so stupid).
Nice. The only reservation I have, so far, is around the matter of bandwidth. I presume that splitting up using breakout rooms doesn't change the gross bandwidth requirement. More questions after sleep.🤔
Same question arose by other teachers in my country. But you dont need to use a whiteboard. Share your screen and there you can show all; drawing, painting, mathe etc.
@@wapa171 Try using Google Jamboard. It should work fine with Jitsi Meet. In fact, Steve has a video on Google Meet in which he demonstrates various chrome apps. Most of them work only with Google Meet, but Jamboard is an exception. Pretty neat product.
Hi...!!! Steve...I'm just starting to go deepen with all these new Conferences tools, like ZOOM, GOOGLE MEET, AND JITSI....could you please tell Me which one do I have to choose to prepare or make classes online...?? Thanks for your soon and cordial reply...Regards.... CARLOS SANTANA from CHILE..
Yesterday i was invited to a product presentation from a goverment organisation vía Skype / Skype Web (Skype was ordered by the organisation). It was a desaster. Fortunatly we have our own jtsi-server and we switched then over to jitsi and the product presentation could go on. I think it is important to say that Jitsi has a modul for "moderators" (prosody configuration). So, only users with mod-rights can create a conference and invite others to the conf (In this case you don't need an extra password for the conference). It's fine when you have 20+ users connected - as we use it for educational purposes. Moderators can close the mics of all or all except one or one user only, can kick out other users for example.
I've been really struggling with Zoom. I work with adults with developmental disabilities and we are doing online events such as Karaoke. Zoom had recently stopped allowing the host to unmute the participants. I understand this is for security reasons, but it makes it really difficult when I am working with my clients that don't know how to unmute themselves. Those clients are usually the ones whose parents or caregiver help log them into the meeting, but are unable to sit in the meeting with us to control unmuting. Does Jitsi have the option to unmute others? Also, how is their customer service? I tried calling Zoom to talk to them about the issue and they kept kicking me out of the call because I didn't type the numbers they wanted me to type fast enough. I am also concerned about Zoom's privacy.
For participants in calls who are not very tech-savvy (e.g. the elderly), even finding the mute button is too much for them to achieve; it would be a better user experience if the person establishing the session could unmute people under these circumstances. Perhaps, to address the privacy concern, the client could pop up an approval dialog box saying something like "The organiser of this call would like to unmute you: do you accept this? YES / NO".
One of the biggest drawback of integrating free api of Jitsi on our website is that, any participant can kick the host out of meeting when meeting running on jitsi servers
No imits of any type, many screen sharing options but I keep mine simple and share my whole 2nd monitor so no notifications appear and whatever I want to show is as easy as moving it to my 2nd monitor.
Here's a kicker... Zoom was built on Jitsi, then re-branded and commercialized. I think your quality issue is because your not running your own high bandwidth server but riding instead on a loaded open to the community jitsi server that probably has several rooms going on it at once. Jitsi is open source which means a developer can customize it pretty much any way he / she wants.
Do you know if it is possible to use Jitsi Meet alongside of a different audio platform--such as Cleanfeed, or Source-Connect Now? The reason I ask this is because I am looking for something to give me better audio quality than I am currently getting with Zoom in order to teach singing lessons online. The audio quality actually matters more than the video (I am prepared to give up some video quality as long as I can have really good audio--that is, audio with clarity, minimal lag time, and no drop-out of higher frequencies (which frequently happens on Zoom!) Would appreciate your response on this...
Heather Dufault just had my voice lesson on Jitsi where we have been using Zoom. My teacher was able to play the piano accompaniment while I was singing which was not possible with Zoom. Also there was less latency in Jitsi. I was using an iPad. My voice teacher was using a computer. Loved my lesson on Jitsi!
I can't find any form of waiting room. So you schedule a meeting and people can jump straight in whether or not the host/presenter turns up? This is fine for small meetings, but for public shows this may not be ideal for the host/presenter who will want to look slick and professional.
You can enable or disable lobby. I am totally blind so am using this with a screen reader. I am on my iphone. Anyway, when I create a room, there is a more options button, and when I go to it, I can enable or disable lobby. Hope this helps.

Hope you like it!
I never heard of Jitsi. Looking forward to using
the quality vs. Google Meet is far better in Jitsi and setup/layout as well - nice tool 👍
I agree, but it would be interesting to see how the quality holds up in larger meetings I wonder if google meat would maintain the quality where Jisi might drop off
On iOS, it’s a one-time thing to have to grant permission for the camera use.
Glad I could help!
@@chrisvanextergem5170 So no Safari support yet. . . that's good to know.
Hey Steve, thanks for this wonderful walktrhough. I wondered why you didn't talk about using Jitsi whith our own internal server (local network)
Here it is almost a year after you make the video, and only now am I finding out about Jitsi... or you for that matter. Thank you for the intro to the ... I guess you would call it a web-app. New subscriber. :)
Thank you for this demonstration. Two comments / questions:
1) From what I could see, anyone can kick anyone else out of a Jitsi meeting.
I've read somewhere that Jitsi works okay with most browsers, but not Firefox.
@@crossleydd42 If this is true, it is a serious limitation, especially for my family, as I have pushed them into Firefox for quite some time. This seems a real shame, because otherwise this appears to be an excellent communications program.
@@AllanAppel1948 Sadly, Allan, incompatibility is a typical situation with computing. Here's an example which illustrates the scenario to your family.
Thank you for the introduction to Jitsi, I'll be using it in our future online meetings, keep up the good work.
Glad you like it!
Great video. Glad to see you gave Jitsi a look. One of Jitsi's limitations is it much prefers, if not requires Chrome browser. I have been able to get Opera and Firefox to work, but can be a bit temperamental. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the tips!
@@dottotech I use it on Vivaldi okay.
Google Meet also allows you to share your tabs via the Cast tab feature now which includes audio - rather than screen sharing, etc. Works quite well. But I prefer Jitsi.
Nice tip, thanks Shane!
The download option from Jitsi is for the Apple App Store and that has no link to Mac OS, only for iPhone, iPad and iWatch.
As others have mentioned, the big downside to Jitsi is that it only works reliably in the Chrome browser, so that will be a limiting factor for some users if they aren't amenable to using Chrome.
@Australian_888 Brave is Chromium under the hood so it will work the same that Chrome
Hello how are you doing today 💝
very helpful and informative. Can't wait to try Jitsi.
Excellent demonstration! Looking forward to more video conferencing demos on this program and more soon.
Hello how are you doing today 💝
Excellent presentation. The Linux users group of which I am a member plans to try Jitsi at its next meeting. I am optimistic that the trial will be successful and that we will begin using Jitis as our standard video conferencing product. I was a little apprehensive about switching platforms, but your video cleared up my concerns.
omg, I used to love your show as a kid!
Can we pin or enlarge the screen of one or two participants even though they are not speaking, as I have to hold yoga classes and I want to see closely the postures
Hey Steve, I asked about Jitsi and you delivered. Thanks. Any free vidoeconference software include breakout rooms ? Cheers.
Not that I know of
Your last comment it doesn't replace Zoom, can you please elaborate more around that and why? I really dislike Zoom which I wont go into here. I have also been looking at Jami, so would be interested in your view on this other Opensource option.
looking at moving my video conf needs to this platform, as linux desktop users, this is great fit, GREAT content, thank you
You're welcome!
Very interesting! Does the Jitsi mobile app require attendees to create an account or can they join a meeting like Zoom without having to create an account?
Just connect
Simply could not live on Linux and Open Source at that time
Great share! You are right about the origins I believe, sometime you just have to scratch your head and shrug your shoulders, then go with the flow.
Follows means you are primary highlighted window. I wuld assume.
Oh that makes sense thank you!
Hello how are you doing today 💝
Yay, the project management app I use has a customized version of Jitsi built in. Great to learn more about it.
Thanks so much for this great video. I love Jitsi, but occasionally find a delay between picture and audio . . . the audio comes in late. Short of shutting down and clicking back in, is there a way to correct that? Warm thanks for any help.
how can i add jitsi in my wix website?I would like to generate automatically on every booking from customers a link with jitsi.
WOW, that looks awesome. I am very, very interested in this platform!!
Hello how are you doing today 💝
I really like your video! I just used jitsi tonight and noticed that the sound may be a problem...like when I talk, people who are using phones can hear the echos, of course I can too. I don't remember this happened in zoom before. Would love to hear more about it... Perhaps it will be good to have people use headphones?
Were there any speakers close to you that may have caused the echoes?
@@dottotech Thanks for your response. i think the fact that some of us didn't use headphones might have caused the echos...
Perhaps the discussion on this forum can help you find the potential issue: community.jitsi.org/t/echo-cancellation/15492/10
Hello, thank you for your brilliant explanation. I am going host meeting next week and I want to know if I can share my screen to with the others. What is time limit? Thank you.
no time limit
I like Jiti and have been using it a bit. Its biggest limitation (at least for my usage) is that smartphone users can't share their screens. They are working on this so hopefully corrected soon. I do hate that the default option on the public server doesn't request user's names on joining a meeting (so stupid).
Fun video! Good to get familiar with new web conferencing platforms, especially today. Nice job!
Nice. The only reservation I have, so far, is around the matter of bandwidth. I presume that splitting up using breakout rooms doesn't change the gross bandwidth requirement. More questions after sleep.🤔
Love Jitsi and have been playing with it for some time, but for tutoring math I use Zoom for the integrated whiteboard.
Any idea for annotating on the shared screen??
It looks impressive, shall certainly give it a try.
Hi...!!! Steve...I'm just starting to go deepen with all these new Conferences tools, like ZOOM, GOOGLE MEET, AND JITSI....could you please tell Me which one do I have to choose to prepare or make classes online...??
Thanks for your soon and cordial reply...Regards.... CARLOS SANTANA from CHILE..
my order of preference is
zoom
Jitsi
meet
Yesterday i was invited to a product presentation from a goverment organisation vía Skype / Skype Web (Skype was ordered by the organisation). It was a desaster. Fortunatly we have our own jtsi-server and we switched then over to jitsi and the product presentation could go on.
I think it is important to say that Jitsi has a modul for "moderators" (prosody configuration). So, only users with mod-rights can create a conference and invite others to the conf (In this case you don't need an extra password for the conference). It's fine when you have 20+ users connected - as we use it for educational purposes. Moderators can close the mics of all or all except one or one user only, can kick out other users for example.
do u think jitsi is better platform for teaching students compared to zoom?
Any option to control audience mic and cam? Thank you
Great video. Very usefuland valuable information.
many thanks 🙏
My pleasure. I'm glad it helped.
Does Jitsi allow one to share one’s screen? Hope there is no time limit on this like Zoom
Jitsi does not allow unmuting other users, nor turning their cameras on.
And that's important, despite your understandable situation.
Hello Mr S is there a timelimit? and can you like in zoom take a portion of the screen to show? Thanks for allways good videos
no time limit. thanks!
No imits of any type, many screen sharing options but I keep mine simple and share my whole 2nd monitor so no notifications appear and whatever I want to show is as easy as moving it to my 2nd monitor.
2:11 What did just walk across the wall behind him?!
Would you consider doing a introduction to Nearpod?
Will you be doing a demo of creating a jitsi meet server ?
Thank you for the video in Jitsil
Hadn't heard of Jitsi. I've been using Zoom, but find the time limitation frustrating. One of our members is paying for extended time limits.
Jitsi has no time limitations. If you switch to it, your member will be able to find a better way to spend that money.
Everyone follows me in settings means that if someone will connect, will show the selected person by default instead of the tile view
Hello how are you doing today 💝
So, no voting feature? It's the one we're looking to use the most
I can't find any form of waiting room. So you schedule a meeting and people can jump straight in whether or not the host/presenter turns up? This is fine for small meetings, but for public shows this may not be ideal for the host/presenter who will want to look slick and professional.
I don’t think it is designed for large groups
You can enable or disable lobby. I am totally blind so am using this with a screen reader. I am on my iphone. Anyway, when I create a room, there is a more options button, and when I go to it, I can enable or disable lobby. Hope this helps.
