It would be amazing if Tom Baker would shoot some "final" scenes as the Curator, to be played at a later date, maybe years in the future. He's aware he's in his eighties and not immortal. But shooting something like this could give him a little piece of immortality, allowing a character he plays now to be revealed in the future.

I always thought the ending should be the doctor dies and the master feeling remoers for his best friend and wanting to change his life around takes up the name the doctor and continuing the doctors legacy of protecting the Univers from evil. It would redeem the master and leave the ending open ended for it to live on in our minds.

I'd be happy with the TARDIS flying off into the sunset or the open-ended regeneration. Or a combination of the two. This is a show that should never "end." There should always be a coda, "and the adventure continues...," for any kind of inevitable finale.

    • @mahfuzurchowdhury2765
      @mahfuzurchowdhury2765 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes exactly. Doctor Who will never end. That are too many fans and big names attached to it to ever fully die, so and "ending" to the show will definitely be a more open-ended one, similar to that of 1989's Survial

    • @Sci-Fi-Mike
      @Sci-Fi-Mike ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. Although the 1989 series ending with Ace and Sylvester McCoy walking away from the camera seemed empty to many, I would be ok with an open future like this.
And Tom Baker's Curator almost made me tear up 10 years ago. Tom Baker is still THE Doctor.

Number 8: Doctor who now and in the 80s are two completely different beasts. Maybe in the view of someone in the UK it looks the same, but there's a world of difference between Doctor Who in the international Market today than in the classic series. Yes it was available here, but it was on PBS and was considered something only for the nerdiest of scifi fans. The current version of Doctor Who is a global phenomenon that puts it on the same level as star trek and star wars.

I wouldn’t of minded if the show ended on twice upon a time, came full circle back to the first doctor, the twelfth gave a beautiful speech about being the doctor, and fade to credits mid regeneration. They could of also digitally added all the companions on the battlefield, like the glass people things (forget what they’re called) are showing him why he has to keep going on

    • @danthemeegs8751
      @danthemeegs8751 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yup Twice Upon A Time would’ve been a great ending, esp with the whole “full circle” thing, like you say

Here's my take on this. I imagine the Doctor sealing his consciousness away in a classic fob watch and placing it in the TARDIS library, and then living his life as "Mr. John Smith", with a lovely wife and his daughter, Susan Jr. Susan knows nothing of Gallifrey, or the Doctor, or his travels. Yet. The old Doctor doesn't want his daughter to be mixed up in his dangerous life, which will eventually come to haunt him. Then one night, Susan gets curious about her father's work-shed as she goes for a late-night snack, and shenanigans ensue....
    . . . . .
Her father and mother had gone to bed, but Susan (Junior, but no one called her that) couldn't sleep. Slipping her cold feet into fluffy, pink slippers, she left her room and tip-toed down the hall, intending to head to the kitchen for a snack. Remembering to hop the third step down the stairs -- it squeaked -- Susan got herself a glass of water and a packet of jelly babies from the jar on the counter beside the refrigerator. As she passed the window, she glanced outside and her eye fell on her father's work-shed in the back garden. There was a soft, blue glow in the shed's window. But perhaps it was a trick of the light?
Curiosity won over brief indecision and she slipped out the back door, shivering in the chilled October air. Her father, the beloved physician of their town of Abbey-by-the-Sea, had always warned Susan to stay out of the work-shed, and especially at night. He liked to tinker, and many of his experiments and inventions were stored inside it, he said. Turning the handle on the door, she was surprised when the door swung open -- the old doctor had forgotten to lock it. Stepping inside, she shut the door and cautiously looked around.
The blue glow was coming from something large standing against the wall in a far corner. She slowly walked toward the thing, which was covered by a long sheet; it was at least as tall as she was. Grabbing the old sheet, she gave it a tug. The dust of ages scattered down as the sheet came free, revealing a large, blue box. Susan had no idea what it was. It was large enough for a person to stand inside, and the lettering along the top of the door said POLICE PUBLIC CALL BOX. The glass windows were faintly glowing a bluish-white, and this is where the glow in the shed's window had come from.
As her trembling fingers reached for the small, silver door handle, the lock clicked and the door opened inward slightly. She froze. Chancing a worried glance at the door of the shed, Susan turned her attention back to the strange box in front of her. This thing was precisely the sort of dangerous invention her father must have been talking about, whatever it was. Her heart-rate quickened. Pushing the door wide, Susan gasped aloud. No. No, surely her eyes were playing tricks on her?
Susan was not a simple-minded girl. At twelve years old, she was perfectly aware that things in the world had proper sizes, and that large things were large, and small things were small. And she was perfectly, absolutely, positively sure that a small box could not have an entire, other room inside of it, and one larger than the size of the shed she was standing in! She grasped the skin on her arm and pinched. Ouch! Definitely awake. Taking a deep breath, Susan stepped resolutely over the threshold of the box and entered the impossible, cavernous space beyond.
The floor was laid with a dark wood, shining as though it had just been polished. The interior of the room reminded her of a cozy study, like the common room at her school. The walls were lined with dozens of bookcases, which were stuffed with old, thick volumes. Tables and squashy reading chairs were grouped here and there in warm pools of lamplight. A white marble fireplace with a carved mantel loomed out of the dark recesses of the far wall, a fire blazing merrily like it had been burning for hours. Susan looked up and gasped again, for the ceiling was simply gone -- in its place, a golden lattice through which the night sky was visible. Was it the night sky, though? She could see large, multicolored clouds of stuff off in the distance, surrounded by that endless field of stars -- and she realized she was looking at *galaxies*. She was looking at space.
She tore her eyes away from the astonishing sight and her eyes alighted on a large, circular dais in the center of the room, with the most marvelous mechanical structure standing atop it. Buttons, levers, spinning wheels, and dangly bits of all sorts covered the control station and hung above it, plus round screens showing scrolling lines of data and strange symbols. It was incredible. As she slowly circled the hexagonal console, she saw a large silver-and-wooden handle or lever, standing in an upright position. Her instincts screamed, "pull it!" but her mind shied away from the rash idea and she stepped backward.
THUD. Susan spun around. The doors had swung shut behind her...by themselves! She crossed the room to the doors and pulled. They would not open. She pushed. They would not open that way, either. She was trapped! She glanced around the room suspiciously, but she saw nothing out of the ordinary...which was a relative statement, given the circumstances. There were several other doors leading off of this one ("Impossible!" her mind moaned, "how big is this place?"), but they were all closed. Her mind flashed back to the upright lever on the console. Hurrying back to it, she stepped up onto the dais, sucked in a breath, and yanked the lever downward.
KA-CHUNG. A horrid, loud, wheezing, groaning sound seemed to issue from the room itself, as the central, glowing column above the console began to slowly move up and down. The floor vibrated in time with the groaning sound, and Susan was afraid. She had no idea what was happening. Why had the doors not opened? After what seemed like hours or minutes or seconds, the awful, wheezing groan stopped and the floor was still. On shaking legs, Susan crossed the room again and tugged at the doors. They opened and Susan shrieked. It was daytime. Her father's shed was gone. And judging by that pale orange sky and the purple mountains in the distance, and the rolling, red grass stretching on for miles before her...she was a long, long way from England....

If it means anything, this American Whovian would most definitely be in favor of an end closing with the 4th doctor…Everyone’s Doctor: Tom Baker. Ending with the Great Curator would be a fitting end. Though I originally came in the fold with John Pertwee, Tom Baker has always held a special place in my heart. During “The Day of the Doctor, my heart nearly stopped when hearing that deep, melodious voice. The look on Matt Smith’s face that said “this is as big of a surprise to me”. I don’t know about anyone else but I nearly cried tears of joy! Long story short (too late), that would be my perfect end, should there be one.

A full reboot could work, a whole new Doctor from incarnation 1 (that we see being born so Timeless child nonsense later can happen).
Our version of DW can end with the Curator, but a new version happens with Doctor 1 in a parallel dimension so it could potentially even cross over into the main dimension if need be.
I just think this would allow for old villains/monsters to be revisited with established lore to be mostly the same but allows for differences to be fresh.
The “rules” of regeneration can be known from the start and planned out better, even if it isn’t set in concrete and regenerations are used up like how 10 used to one heal but stay the same person, at least it can be plotted out better by any given show runner.
New enemies can be made that don’t need to be one and done but could potentially show up multiple series or Doctors later intentionally as a plot device. We know the Doctor has used new incarnations of him/herself to their advantage to an unwitting foe to reveal information.
It’s be easier to have writers not be stuck in a corner because they don’t know 60 years of previous material to accommodate for

I'm old school: give me "TARDIS and a sunset" any day. That ending in the 80's led to the Virgin New Adventures, and everything that spun off from it. I'd much prefer that to ending on a regeneration--let us imagine the Doctor we know going off on adventures, rather than wondering who the new Doc might have been.
Barring that--even though my old-timer mind rebels at the idea--give us a reboot. Start fresh, have a story bible to sort out the lore from the beginning instead of making it up as you go, and see what happens.
But my first preference, of course, is that the show keeps going as it has been for a good long while yet!

    My opinion:
The doctor Reunites with Susan and takes her home and decides to retire on either Gallifrey or on a beautiful peaceful planet and Susan’s new child (if she has any after she lives with David) walks in his/hers great grandfather’s (The Doctor) footsteps (this a reboot/new era of Doctor Who with this character) he or she might take the same title or a new one like, “The follower”, “The physician”, “The Healer” or even “The other” (just a good name in my opinion for a title for a time lord after all it makes sense, the, “Other” Doctor”) or they go by their name… then again the shows name is “Doctor Who after all so maybe the character doesn’t go by their real name like how the Doctor does 🙃

The main reason Doctor Who became so popular was that fact that a viewer could join the show at any time. There was no "prerequisite viewing" required. Every story of the original classic series was for the most part a stand alone story. Very few times did Doctor Who revisit an old story and add to it with "sequel" of sorts. Though it did happen, (Genesis of the Daleks/Destiny of the Daleks, Deadly Assassin/Keeper of Trakken, E-space trilogy and Tom Baker's Regeneration Trilogy) the show was more like an anthology series where the main characters were thrown into different situations every episode.
This current idea of a story with hints dropped from previous seasons is relatively new. It literally makes it more difficult to get into the show when you have to watch old episodes to find out what is going on. As stated in the video, Regenerations are soft reboots, but changing companions is even a softer reboot. The viewer is reintroduced to the concepts of the TARDIS and what the Doctor does.
The show needs to get back to this formula if it is going to continue. The constant digging into the Doctor's past and the technology of the TARDIS will eventually remove the power of the mystery and we will lose interest in Doctor Who.

  • @thelolcitygod

My ideal end is. The doctor enters the tardis barely able to walk. Damaged and dying from their final battle with their foe the Daleks and cyber men led by the master. They flip and press buttons on the console and stops, sighing. Looking at their hands seeing no sign of regeneration, They knows this is it. No more regeneration. The tardis begins humming harmoniously. The doctor holds it in for one last trip. We cut to Kate Stewart sitting by a hospital bed talking to the out of view character. The sound of rain against glass is heard until late speaks up. “ I’ll see you tomorrow alright? I love you dad” she walks out of the room barely keeping her self together knowing this will be the last time she sees him. Moments go pass until the doctor walks in. Sits right next to the person in bed and speaks. “ Hello old friend. It’s been a while” the man speaks up and mutters the word ‘doctor’. The doctor and the man talk more until we realise it is in fact brigadier lethbridge- Stewart. The camera pans out of the glass and cuts to the doctor back in the tardis looking at their reflection. Then an exterior shot. The tardis rotating slowly in space. Then cuts to the doctor on the floor drawing their last breath. Then cut outside as the tardis slowly begins to disappear with that iconic sound of the tardis playing out. The tardis gone. Just empty space. A slow version of the classic theme plays. Cut to black

If the series is ever to be rebooted with new characters, I like the idea of the new featured Time Lord being a decendant of The Doctor.
I could see The Doctor settling down to have a quiet life and a family. The kids would be raised hearing tales of Gallifrey, and of The Doctor's travels. And one of those children would be thirsty to hear more and more about those adventures, and that child would dream of new adventures to come.

Here's one: The Doctor sacrifices himself to save his companion by being flung into the Time Vortex without a capsule. He stole a TARDIS and ran away to observe the wonders of the universe with no thought to interacting with it. After discovering how much he loves to interact with all of history, loves being with people of all species, now he is sentenced to doing exactly that, observing without touching. Tragic but fitting, and companion is left to tell his story.
Sort of Quantum Leap combined with Time After Time.

“I recently calculated that I have saved every planet in the known universe a minimum of twenty-seven times. But you know, I have grown weary of all the evil in the cosmos, all the cruelty, all the suffering, all those endless gravel quarries and so I have decided to retire, settle down, and get married.” ~ Doctor Who (Rowan Atkinson) ["The Curse of the Fatal Death"]
As always thank you so very much for the video.

Doctor Who is the show designed to never end, so if the BBC decided to actually end it, the best thing for them to do would be to end the final episode with The Doctor regenerating alone in a giant void of either black or white or some other color.
That way, when people inevitably want to revive it in a few decades/centuries, they won't have to worry at all about keeping up with continuity or rebuilding sets or anything like that. They could do exactly like what they did with Rose and have the first episode start in a random location with The Doctor already in their new body, or if they want they can pick up a right where they left off and show the end of the regeneration, or they could do that as a flashback. And since it would have happened in a giant void of a single color, they won't have to worry about rebuilding sets or anything like that to keep up with continuity.

As the show gets older, it does not get less accessible to new comers.
    Ive started watching Classic who from s1, s5, s7, s8, s11, s13, s14, s16, s17, s19, s23, s25 and could just slot right in and watch the show. From New who you've got s1, s3(ish), s5, s7, s10, s11, s12.
A show with 20+ places that you can seamlessly start watching from with the context "the doctor is an alien who travels through time" is not inaccessible. Even more so, those jumping on points I said are generally introductions of new characters or doctors, but pretty much any episode of classic that isn't a character departure can be watched without previous context. The same for New who to a lesser degree (especially with the mess of Smith and Whittaker)

If, as is heavily implied (read: "tell me you're the Doctor without saying you're the Doctor"), the Curator is the final regeneration, winding down to his natural death, an extra shot of that scene, shown from his angle, would be perfect. Maybe after exiting stage left, the Curator went back to his own TARDIS, quietly sat down, and closed his eyes for the last time, perhaps with the words, "It's the end... but the moment has been prepared for", and the credits running silently (as they did when Adric died), or maybe a more subdued, ethereal score. This could be achieved even after Tom Baker's own death, using deep fake and either audio files or impersonators, and held over for future use, should it come to that (let's be honest, it WILL end at some point).
Then, perhaps as a mid- or post-credit scene, just focus on the exterior of the TARDIS, drifting somewhere between space and the time vortex, before a split-second glimpse of the golden regeneration energy, and the BBC logo coming up. Just in case someone thinks bringing it back yet again might be a good idea.

Anywho, the Doctor is gone. Pick your flavor of how. But his companion puts on the headset and used the stored DNA to rewrite their DNA from human to timelord.
Because the Tardis understands that the universe and time itself needs a Doctor.

Then an older but same regeneration Susan answers the door and somehow just knows that her grandfather finally made due on his promise to come back and he stays with her for Christmas dinner and we assume stays with her and her family for the rest of his life

Well, a future show runner wouldn't want to revisit such a divisive storyline, but Big Finish is doing it, starting a series about the Fugitive Doctor with Jo Martin (who is the second Doctor Martin, it would appear...). So you see, even if the show should end at the BBC, it would find a different medium to continue, as it has done before.

  • @rsienicki

The Curator ending (probably not Tom Baker, but they are impersonators) would be a good exit for potential cancellation. They could just end with the Doctor retiring after all this and sits down in the Museum. (They wouldn't even have to show Tom Baker, they just retire as the Doctor who would currently be in the role. And then if the show to be revived again (it will be at some point), start by the first new Doctor after the Curator run. That's how we could have different actors as the Curator in the Big Finish and the TV one will be next Doctor. The years when the show won't be on could be known as Curator years.

How to reboot without the back-lore... Seamus.
The Timeless Child introduced the Seamus Doctor. An Irish Garda (police officer) which was the brainwashing of The Doctor. He had no memory of being a Gallifreyan, and regenerated, apparently as a child without memories. Everything that happened, happened, but no memory.
Which means that the next episode, is the new first Doctor, or training as a child to become the Doctor. I am surprised that there was no call to have a child doctor show. Presumably meeting the Rani and the Master as children would be interesting in a Smallville way.

Cancellation won't end Dr Who, because there are too many media outlets other than television. After the classic series was cancelled, it lived on in audio adventures, books, comic books and a television movie, that created another regeneration, who lived on as above. Once something that is ongoing is created, it always finds a way to carry on, be it a film, a television series, book or comic. Modern cinema is full of franchises from many such origins. You stop the series but it would live on somehow.
You could have a child of the Doctor as a reboot, he did have a granddaughter after all.
There's near be a Welsh or ginger or gay or bisexual, etc Doctor, so many choices.

saying this not as a hater of the recent dr who stuff (the recent season was good but i am indeed not a big fan of series 11 and 12) but the last season does HAVE around the same average viewership as the seventh doctor did in his last season (26)A little bit more than it series 13 had 4.95 and season 26 had 4.15 but the point stands as if they dont find a good way to boost the ratings the show may get cancelled....BUT then again the walking deads last few seasons have had 2 million each and certain other shows on bbc like being human went on for 4 seasons with less.
i can see why people do think current dr who is dead but in truth they could keep the show going for a very long time. idk when it would get to just 1 million viewers, which would definitely stop the show due to its budget, but say they dont boost there ratings soon then maybe like.....idk another 4 to 5

They will never ever put the show to bed permanently because even if the ratings stared dropping quickly they can simply put it back on ice. Wait for the right moment and bring it back again. As history has shown the fanbase is always gonna be there. and sometimes a few years off can do a IP a lot of good. When Doctor Who came back in 2005 it was bigger than ever. They can easily do that multiple times. So its within their best interests to keep things open ended.
