I could listen to the end of this on repeat for days. The way it charges from 4/4 to 3/4 is exquisite, and the overlapping vocals that follow are immaculate!
I have listened to porcupine tree for 5 years now. Still so bloody brilliant. No artists will ever top them. Ever.... Sorry but it aint happening. xD The triple layered lyrics, the drumming, the outro. This album. How can something be so immaculate. This album is a ride I will never ever ever ever forget. Holy fuck man.
5:53 A snippet that shows Gavin Harrison is phenomenal. The melody on guitar stayed the same, but Gavin changed time signature from 8/8 to 6/8 with such a smooth transition, so smooth that you probably would not notice if you don't listen closely. This transition really is something.
+Charles Berkeley From what I've read from interviews with Steven, he writes demos of the songs with very basic drum patterns, and then Gavin would spice them up. So I'm pretty sure that the changing time signature was Gavin's idea.
I always have to rewind and give the chorus and the end a few listens just to focus on the different vocal lines. I love when they overlap three at a time, like here or in heartattack in a lay-by
First Porcupine tree album I bought - fantastic take on prog without trying to hard I grew up on Genesis , Yes and Jethro tull - Lazarus was a song that captured my heart and soul - I have since listened to everything Steven Wilson has done - Fantastic composer - musician - very progressive on all levels.
I first heard this on a mixtape an old friend of mine made me decades ago, of the bands we'd seen together in a tiny LA music venue I have sadly forgotten the name of. This was the last track, and I thought I would never hear it again. I've tried and tried to remember even half of the song names on that tape, and all of a sudden out of nowhere, "Mellotron Scratch" popped into my head. I had no idea what it was, until I clicked this video and it all came flooding back. This song will always represent that cherished time in my youth. The venue may be gone and I lost touch with that friend many years ago, but at least I will always have song echoing through my memory.

@@WellStudied Steven Wilson began Porcupine Tree as a solo project using a guitar, synths, and a drum machine. By this time, he had a band comprised of Gavin Harrison on drums, Richard Barberi on synths, and Colin Edwin on bass. Steven Wilson was the primary composer but I think each member added his own expertise to their respective parts to some degree.
@Zelim I've known some of their best songs for years (and Steven Wilson) yet I've only started to really listen to their full albums now. I honestly don't know why!
Bands like this, and Jellyfish, will never get the love they deserve because the world isn’t deep enough to understand r be still long enough to listen
From 5:06 on the guitar gives a feeling of counting in 3 while the drums plays a simple 4. Almost every time whenever the drums goes into a new 4 the guitar will change the chord slightly even though it will keep it's counting of 3. To make this easier to understand I will put it down like this (Every "///" is a completed 4 on the drums.): 12312312///31231231///23123123///12312312. Let me know if you have any questions, because I saw that some people talking about this.
Radio paradise turned me onto porcupine tree with the Sound of Muzak in 2005.....ish. Hooked immediately got lucky and saw them at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Amazing
I don't want to be mean, but this part is the reason why I listen to the entire song. It just absolutely crashes my mood into the ground as well as the feeling I get from the beginning of the song. This part makes me depressed and I love it.
Interesting fact: The drums in that part is playing a steady 4/4 beat even though the guitar is playing in 6/8. 6/8 is basicly 3/4, but in a fast tempo. Another band that used this in the idea was for example "Led Zeppelin with "Kasmir".
Honestly I have a soft spot for their slow songs. Both are bloody brilliant. This album is perfect at mixing both flawlessly. Its not heavy just to be heavy, its built up with purpose. Ya know?
I don't know what this is called in music theory terms, but I love this roll thingy they do at 6:27 with the overlapping melodies. Well, I love all that they do, but this is extra sweet on the ears :)

THEREFORE, BECOMING ENDLESS. NOT UNLIKE THE DREADED CIRCUMFRENCE OF A CIRCLE IN MATHEMATICS; IT THEREFORE BECOMES "ENDLESS." It's not a round or a canon; both of those have strict requirements about the overlapping melodies' similarities to one another (in a round, they have to be identical, for example). The end of this song just makes use of counterpoint.

Seeing him play live for the Fear of a live blank planet tour, no one will ever be able to change my opinion that Gavin is probably the best drummer alive

This song has a deep feel of the nostalgic sentiment !
Well put. The first time I listened to this I felt a weird, unwarranted surge of nostalgia. It still has that feel, only now it makes sense. :')
Definitely in my top 5 from PT. Nothing beats the slow-growers like this track and Arriving Somewhere But Not Here...
