I keep telling myself that just because many of Steven's compositions are deeply melancholy, he isn't. In his own words, he's not depressed, he just finds sad songs to be often the most beautiful. I have to agree.
Vividly remember walking back across Blackheath towards Greenwich at about half eleven in the evening in early February, having spent all day sorting out my dad's funeral and clearing out his place, absolutely numb with cold, with this song playing in my head. Over 6 years ago now. Cheered me up. Made me cry. Beautiful song; he'd have loved it.
You listen to this and want to share it on facebook but then you don't coz they might think you are depressed, which you probably are but you don't want them to know... it's such a poor life.
Actually I like this kind of music and guess what I am not depressed and I actually share this and even suggest other to listen it. Also sometimes I feel like writing my own songs and I have been writing them. Many of my friends say I am quite weird and my music taste is also quite strange than others. But I actually find their words compliment because it's better to be strange than to follow something you don't like just to be social and please others.
well, the lyrics of PT music overall are passive / aggressive, but that is not unique. His beautiful music is, however. Remember "Remember Me Lover"? There, he hates ppl / his gf, now he seems to wish he wasn't alone.
Conclusion of this song to me starts from 6:38 is the Exact Point of time I just close my eyes and go on my own world.. So pure and relaxing at the same time..
I stumbled on this song while visiting a record store in ATLANTA (5 little points) went crazy when I got to Miami trying to find it ......Awesome song also reminds me a lot of something Maynard from Tool would do anyone else agree ?
+edelutube2010 I saw the show in Toronto the other day. While they played this, I had a vague feeling of familiarity. I finally figured out what it reminded me of - Jeff Buckley's Dream Brother!
Couldn't listen to this song for the longest time. Killed me. For some reason, I listened to this song a few times with my ex and it kinda stuck with me. Favorite PT song.
very much same here. except my ex and i never listened to it. It had meaning at the time in relation to certain feelings that ended up causing us to break up. This song very much reminds me of those feelings now, although the reminder is somewhat of a positive one.
Un pur chef d'oeuvre, toutes les influences que j'aime: le rock progressif , King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator..... l'élégance anglaise, la prise de son.....
+tarkineWild The new version is fantastic! So well done...so true to the original. Additionally, having Ninet Tayeb sing the chorus actually helped give the song a different perspective. Worth pre-ordering 4.5 , if only for this single (the others are pretty good, for outtakes, too...particularly My Book of Regrets).

Early PT is deeply influenced by Pink Floyd. But PF stopped making music long ago. I’m so glad somebody picked up the mantle, and took it in a great direction.
Can you say inferiority complex? But honestly this is a painfully, deeply expressed song; there are a few people I'd like to call but it's probably not going to happen anytime soon.
This tune surpasses magnificent into areas I remember from years past yet it displays a fresh brilliance that has manifested itself in Steven Wilson......jack
@@nikons You didn't answer the question. It was, why is it written "The train" on every lyric video of this song, since Steven Wilson sings "The LAST train"
Even tho Stupid dream wasn't a great album (Because it was more pop then any other album by them) This song is just amazing and also A Smart kid is great too.
"Four Chords That Made a Million" is arguably way more poppy than anything on the entire Stupid Dream album. I mean, yeah, a lot of the stuff on Stupid Dream is really cool sounding... But cool-sounding doesn't necessarily make something sound "poppy".

Stefan you sound like a full blown Floyd freak. All of you guys are like that. You can't recognise any talent beyond Roger Waters, if it comes and slaps you!! PT and Steven Wilson are this generations most prolific and accomplished musicians, with enough creative chops and chutzpah to overcome any comparison to the yesteryears 'has-beens'
Ninet brings a whole new level to this song. The weakest part of this song would be the vocals and Ninet does an exemplary job. I only wish Steven would record this song one more time with original members and Ninet.
I keep telling myself that just because many of Steven's compositions are deeply melancholy, he isn't. In his own words, he's not depressed, he just finds sad songs to be often the most beautiful. I have to agree.
+Daniel Verberne Sad things are the most beautiful things in the word :)
+Daniel Verberne "Miserable music makes me happy, and happy music makes me fucking miserable"

+ Daniel Verberne qé duda cabe. La melancolía, cuando se elige, es un estado de ánimo que nos da una extraña y perturbadora felicidad
Melancholy is not the same thing of being depressed. It's when your spirit fits perfectly in the shadow haze.
Everytime i return to Porcupine Tree something is wrong, but i feel safe when i listen to them.
It’s been over 20 years and I still come back to this song over and over again. Each time feel it differently. Sigh… fantastic timeless song.

So glad my jazz teacher showed me this band haha
Haha awesome jazz teacher, fuck!
Lucky you, great teacher!!
This song touches parts that are repressed, isolated and buried deep down within me. Such beautiful melancholy.
Great bassline by colin around 3:03. Definitely the most underrated member of the band.

Sad things are the most beautiful. There is something special about remorse that there is not in joy. There is no beauty in joy.
Of course there is
It is called "Learning"
That flute part in 3:03 is so addictive!
Shardul Pokharel on top of the sexy bass line
anyone else think that there is something that sets wilson apart from every other musician?

Love❤ from Bangladesh 🇧🇩.
Dat Pink Floyd influence (mainly the sax part). Love it, progressive, deep, haunting and beautiful
Maybe a "Shine on you crazy diamond" influence
A true masterpiece, great lyrics and Theo Travis part is such a plus!! Haunting melody.
The perfect progressive rock song...beautiful

This is the song that got me into PT.
This hits different with cigarettes
It's sound like copy of "Set Control For The Heart of The Sun" Pink Floyd. The descent in 2:58 and 5:00 is identical as "Live in Pompeii"
