i used to listen to them OBSESSIVELY in 2005 (my high school friend burned me a cd including them, those were the days man 😢) and then the old computer died & i totally forgot they existed until now. I'M FREAKING OUT. i just remembered "there was this band, lightbulb something, lightbulb something GOD PLEASE LIGHTBULB WHAT?". i described them to myself as "what radiohead might have evolved into after ok computer in a parallel universe"… just ranting but SO HAPPY I FOUND THEM AGAIN!!!!!
I wish i could find nostalgic songs like this somewhere. It's magical, it almost makes you feel you're in the early 2000's with the sunset in your face, thinking about ps1 games, having fun with friends and school. Good old days, i guess.
Yep, except my good ol days were standing in the front row of concerts by my favourite band, the Oils. Wish I could stand in the front row of one of this bands concerts.
Lightbulb Sun is a gateway to my adolescence growing up in the 2000s discovering it now in my ealry 20's is finding a piece of my past that always existed. & "Russia on Ice" is a defining moment of modern art
That bassline though. Not even lying, Colin is one my favorite bassist. Dude just knows how to complement music without overplaying or being overtly technical.
I first saw them on the very last day of this tour, a festival in the rain in Kent, after 2-3 minutes, when I'd picked my jaw off the floor, a lifelong devotee was born, an insanely talented group...
+Alexander Vendrov I always call him "The Whizz Kid" ;-), because he's not really a prodigy and because he's very young, but he's truly a great musician. I think that David Gilmour, Chris Squire, Tony Banks and theese musicians are the sacred monsters :-). Bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis... they are THE Prog ;-). However, long life to OUR Steve Wilson! :-), the youngest king of Prog!
zephyrmop I perfectly realize ;-), I know he was born in 67', it's also the first sentence in the song "Time Flies" ;-). He's very young TOWARDS those musicians I've written in the last comment ;-), and this is not a good think! But he's however a little genious :-).
Amazes me Steven Wilson ability to write songs with such varied tones. I mean this is a guy who wrote "Trains" but also borderline metal songs like "Deadwing"... Just goes to show Porcupine Tree are wayyy more than just a modern prog rock band.
And now with everything from The Raven That Refused to Sing to Hand. Cannot. Erase. to To The Bone, he's explored so many more sounds and genres it's impossbile to keep count. The one thing he isn't, is definable (bonus - he's also not pop). The master.
@@jenniferbeierle2586 Gavin Harrison era Porcupine Tree is pretty poppy. Even though there's the heavy sound, it's not really progressive rock - most of the album tracks are way too straight-forward for prog. Early PT wasn't prog either, it was rather on the psychedelic side of things. And don't get me wrong, whatever he did with PT was great. Nothing wrong with good pop and I believe making it was his intention all along. Raven is closer to what one would call progressive rock, HCE too, to a lesser degree. No-Man's last album is pretty much a progressive pop / disco maxi single, a really great LP. Blackfield is straight up pop rock but it's my favourite project of the bunch.
i am glad that Porcupine tree appears underrated to the world, cause that brings only the few ardent listeners who literally wraps their life around Steven's songs, retains the aura and beauty. I don't want unnecessary stupid ass punks to ever listn to Porcupine Tree
I don't think they are underrated at all. They are not as well known to the masses. But I don't know anyone that has ever heard them that does not like them. And critics, for the most part, rate him highly. Maybe that's what you meant? And fame is a double edged sword. The artist wants everyone in the world to love them and buy their products. I want that for them too because they deserve to get paid. But when they get so big that they only play stadiums and charge a months pay for a ticket, that's no fun either. Think Rollings Stones, U-2, Led Zeppelin (in their prime).
I first found out about them by being a prog rock fan. This was at least a few years before they got recognized by a larger audience or had any albums in the charts. I think at some point they gained a lot of fans outside of the prog rock fan base. There were probably always a few but to me that's when they got really big(probably around deadwing).
Truly epic. And to listen to this and compare it with Steven's recent efforts.... I will say that this remains a favorite, and I am also totally captivated by the new stuff. Thanks for this.
To me it is mostly depressing. I lived in London for some time with the love of my life. I had never felt that much peace and love. That is all gone now and only this song remains.
The sun is a light bulb A candle's a treat The curtains stay closed now On my little retreat And I'll only take medicine If it's followed by sweets A sickly pink liquid That puts me to sleep My head beats a better way Tomorrow a better day And I can watch TV While I'm wrapped up in bed And mother makes sure that I'm watered and fed My best from school will Come over and stare At me in my bubble Of germified air When I'm asleep the smoke fills me I feel the heat My illness leaves me The sun is a light bulb A candle's a treat The curtains stay closed now On my little retreat But after a while The noise from the street Is making me wish I Was back on my feet
yesss....im just now discovering this band. after almost every song, im like, paralyzed with a 1000 yd blank stare in my eyes.. completely shook to my foundations. Steven Wilson is writing these songs from the depths of my soul.
i was in Bologona and reading an alt-rock magazine recommendation, so bought this album, it was 2001 spring I think. Fell in love instantly with the melodic sounds, powerful intercambios, eclectic guitar riffs and the whole band structure. Only in recent years I took a deeper look into what Wilson and PT music have actually created... its one of this things that perhaps were lead to you by intuition and some curiosity, felt right and genuine all along the way, but only with time and with revisit you realise what genius and work stands behind this grandiosity.
The first time me and my wife saw them was in the fleece and firkin pub in Bristol in 1997 during the Signify tour. It was a life changing experience. The next time they play they could fill the 02 in London!!!
It has never been any different. Many songs from the past were hated by the mainstream during their time. These days they are considered true classics.
This song sounds a lot like Radiohead if they had continued with the 'OK Computer' style instead of 'Kid A". Interesting that this album came out the same year as "Kid A"(2000).
I don't think it is necessarily paralysis...just being bedridden due to illness. You could take the meaning to be a temporary illness like pneumonia or mononucleosis, or something as terrible as Leukemia, depending on how cynical you are. :)
One of my favorite PT songs. But does anyone else recognize that the chord progression in the verses is the exact same thing as this, pitched up: th-cam.com/video/IL8M5g8PO94/w-d-xo.html
Well, people can choose to interpret songs however they like; Steven has said himself that he likes to leave things open and he'd rather not tell someone what it's about. If you can connect with the song that way, it's not wrong for you. BUT, I think it's definitely more of a stretch to say it's really about heroin when you look at the rest of the song. I've taken a lot of "sickly pink liquids" in my life and none of them were methadone. Particularly remember that as a kid, they were big on bubble gum flavored painkillers and cough medicine that was *supposed* to be more child friendly, but in reality they were fucking gross. It might also be worth mentioning that SW says he has never been a drug user.
Chuixupu yea you can interpret it however you want im referring to the actual concept steven chose for the song which im positive is not about heroin. theres alot of comments about the pink liquid being a heroin reference which makes me wonder if these people actually listened to the lyrics at all lol
People tend to interpret song lyrics in ways that they themselves can identify with. I've noticed from a lot of experience that drug users or ex-drug addicts seem to be particularly prone to finding drug references in songs. I used to know a guy that was always mishearing lyrics and coming up with his own that matched his interpretation. Oh, and btw, I just remembered, amoxicillin for kids was always pink! Also, Benadryl...and that stuff definitely puts me to sleep.
Soundtrack for the self-isolated.
Slowly we are all becoming strangers.
@@danielvanleeuwen2989 That really started as soon as the internet took off though(incidentally PT wrote one of the first songs about the internet).

Porcupine Tree is no only about Steven Wilson ...
What's not to like. Steven's understated vocal, Colin's exquisite bass work, the drumming, the soundscapes, the solo... the song. 😯

They transcended genres like the best bands do.
He was sort of a modern day Frank Zappa in that regard.

My favorite Porcupine Tree. First song I ever heard by PT.
This song always reminds me that I don't need anything at all except for breathing
Walking down the beach into the ocean. Let the currents wash me away.
That's the way of life
I'd disagree. You need Steven Wilson.
Steve Wilson is so melodic and versatile. Love PT!
Sad you will never find songs as good as this being played on the radio. Radio top 40 music sucks ass nowadays.
It has never been any different. Many songs from the past were hated by the mainstream during their time. These days they are considered true classics.
It's only gotten worse.
ON POINT WITH THE VOCALS AND SOUND, LOVE THEM FROM WAY BACK, MY BAND FOR MOUNTAIN BIKING WITH !

Perhaps my favorite Porcupine Tree song.
It's my song today, I want to get out and play (work) but I'm sick

Desert island disc for me. I think part of it is because I met SW on this tour and saw them twice.
Maybe the best song from PT, and that is good, REALLY GOOD.
Someone Please make a extended version of the guitar solo..its so awesome but for very short duration in the video.
Steven I ❤ your lyrics
Why is this song so good?
SUPER
"Tomorrow a better day"
Here we go again!
SWEET
2:49-2:58 sounds eerily similar to the acoustic chords of Gallows Pole by Led Zep.

Not really. This song is really just about being sick, temporary hindrance to a happy existence. Still an overall happy and optimistic tone to it.

James WWW probably deliberate knowing Wilson.

19Circles 2000 actually
