It's interesting how you've brought up Tale of the White Serpent since I never hear it being brought up. It's fun to hear about things I don't know about for a change. Also, Princess Knight's concept of having a "boy and girl heart" has always been interesting and Osamu Tezuka played with the idea of magical girls with Marvelous Melmo. It's fun to see callbacks to old series like this as well such as the Princess Knight-esque outfit Sakura wore for her class play in CCS. Anyway, I'm going to stay tuned to your channel and am glad I've found you through Miragephan's Twitter page. Also, there's so much interpretation of what a magical girl series is that yeah, you mine as well consider these as prototypes.
Toei wanted to be Japanese Disney: Created Tale of the White Serpent, Animals get more screen time than Titular character. Disney: Created Cinderella, mice get more screen time than the titular character. Toei did it! They Disney now!
Thank you for making this video. I hate it when people call Sailor Moon the first magical girl anime and say that everything that came after it is a ripoff. While Sailor Moon wasn't the first magical girl anime, it was the first to introduce the concept of magical girls transforming and battling evil.
Too true! And Sailor Moon wasn’t even the first to do that: Cutie Honey did the transforming to fight evil thing first in the 1970s. Sailor Moon’s innovation was adding Super Sentai elements like a team of colour-coded fighters working together. After that, there were so many magical girl teams in anime that that became the dominant style for the genre.
@ErynCerise Does Cutie Honey qualify as magical girl? I mean, yes, the protagonist is a young woman with magical powers, but I think it's official aimed at boys, thus making it a shonen anime.
Absolutely it does, at least under my criteria. Cutie Honey is a shounen series, not shoujo, you're right. However, shounen and shoujo are demographics terms, not genres. Magical girl as a genre can include works that fall under shoujo, shounen, seinen, josei, or a mix/none of the above. You will find very few people out there who would object to Cutie Honey being classified as a magical girl, and even more people who place her as one of the key figures in the genre. Male-targeted magical girl stories are not as common as female-targeted ones (at least they weren't until recently, anyway), but they do exist and still fit the definition of "story about girl(s) with magic powers or magic-like abilities in a mundane world".
It's a huge shame most magical girl anime don't get much attention or fans. I mean, compare the TV Tropes pages for Sailor Moon and Puella Magi Madoka Magica to the ones for Sally the Witch and Himitsu no Akko Chan.
Aahhh ep one started off really well!! Starting off with two works that few people know of just shows how much work went into this. And your narration is so pleasing to listen too! i cant wait for the next ep T^T im dying for more
I had heard (and seen some of) Princess Knight before, but not Tale of the White Serpent so that was interesting! I've also head of Sally the Witch but have seen nothing about it so I am very excited for the next episode!
Since I am trying to watch as much as I can from the pre-Astro boy anime era I have put Hakujaden on my watchlist but have yet to see it. I had no idea it kiiiiinda counts as a magical girl anime and this just makes me a lot more excited to see it!
I'm honestly so happyfor this series ✨❤ finally someone pays real atention to this wonderful genre 🌸🌸 thank you so so much 💐 i suscribed to your channel , you are awesome 💐💐
THANK YOU FOR THIS I am doing a paper on Magical Girls and your videos are SUPER helpful for someone like me who knows next to nothing about anime! I really like your editing style! You really deserve more views for this! I really wish I can reference it, but unfortunately they won't accept anything if it's not from a "scholar" gosh, even though this is probably way more insightful and easier to digest
Thank you! I’m glad this helped! Yeah, I understand them not allowing you to cite a video like this since I don’t fully cite my sources like a traditional article would. If it helps, I do have a film degree and do research in some academic publications for this series! Even if that’s not enough to let you cite me, you can check the video descriptions for Further Reading links that may be helpful! Or if you’d like the names of some of my actual academic sources, let me know what kind of stuff you’re looking for and I can drop some titles here.
@@Eryncerise hey! So I actually ended up saying "screw the system" and cited you anyway! I don't care if it's not their preference, your videos were a MASSIVE help and I had to give credit where credit is due, and I ended up with a Distinction for my work!! (Don't know what it's like for America, but that's similar to an A!) And I want to say thank you! Even though the assignment is done, I look forward to more content from you! What you're making here is some real quality content with a lot of heart and passion poured into it and I love it!
Yeah! I've been looking forward to this, really interesting video as well, wasn't aware of either of these. Thanks for the hard work and looking forward to the future episodes :D
Oh yeah, tons! The genre spans the entire history of modern anime, there are lots of shows for each era (especially in the 1990s and after), and they're varied enough that almost all are interesting enough to say something about (even the bad ones!)
Yep! That's the Nozomi Entertainment release of the dub. Sorry, should've mentioned that it was also available to CR subscribers. I will add a note to the description.
5:18, The "Disney of the East?" Did Toei know how much Disney sacrificed to get to where they were? Walt Disney himself nearly bankrupted his & his brother's company twice just to get his next "artwork" to come to life! Did Toei do something of that caliber?
Toei itself was a big company that came out of a group of pre-existing film studios, and it's true that the president Hiroshi Okawa certainly seems like he can't claim to have struggled the same way that Disney did. However, the actual animators who formed Toei Animation once it started certainly did struggle. Quotes from Anime: A History by Jonathan Clements (pp 208-209): "Nichidō was the largest surviving group of Japanese animators, formed around the nexus of Masaoka Kenzō, Mori Yasuji and Yabushita Taiji, and initially operating out of a prefab hut in the grounds of a girls' school. Using materials liberated from the old Tōhō studio, the group eked out a precarious existence until 1956, making ten two-reel and one single-reel animated film for various clients. 'They ... took no risks and endured the wintry era, conducting frugal business for eight years, until Nichidō was acquired by Tōei, and Tōei Doga (Tōei Animation) was set up' (Ushio 2007: 221)" "Staff accounts of life at Nichidō at the beginning of the 1950s tell a story of increasingly straitened circumstances, such that often the company seemed to exist in name only, while its employees scrabbled for part-time jobs elsewhere, designing restaurant menus and illustrating everything from children's books to beerhall placemats." "[...] tensions would carry over when the Nichidō company was rebranded as a subsidiary of Tōei in 1956 - finally part of a 'big' studio, but inheriting many of the concerns of the earlier years of small-time struggles."
I think there is some sort of remake of this story in CGI, and is having an English Dub release soon. Is the new movie and movie somehow similarly? There is a women that can turn into a snake with magical abilities and is a demon. Also she developes a bond with a mortal boy. Just look up white serpent trailer and compare and contrast.
No, it just takes a very long time to put together in between my day job and scouting videos. Lots of research, lots of editing. 😭 Next video is coming along now finally! Not sure when it'll be done but I hope sooner than later.
Forgot to say: Nozomi's entire release of Princess Knight is also available to Crunchyroll subscribers! www.crunchyroll.com/princess-knight

Yeah I feel the same way!
Lowkey wish you had released the whole series at once even though that's impossible because I could binge watch the hell out of this.
If it helps, future episodes will be longer at least! The next couple both have scripts that approach the half hour mark... :'D
Princess Knight looks really neat! ^-^
Panda is best magical girl.
Also I can't wait for more.
This was absolutely fascinating!!! You have such a way with words Eryn and I am so excited for this project to continue!!!
It's a huge shame most magical girl anime don't get much attention or fans. I mean, compare the TV Tropes pages for Sailor Moon and Puella Magi Madoka Magica to the ones for Sally the Witch and Himitsu no Akko Chan.
Yeah (I haven’t even seen sailor moon but since it’s so famous I’ve already been spoiled)
"Disney of the East"
If only it was like that today. Lizzie needs more anime from Toei that isn't a reboot.
Aahhh ep one started off really well!! Starting off with two works that few people know of just shows how much work went into this. And your narration is so pleasing to listen too! i cant wait for the next ep T^T im dying for more
I can already tell that I'm going to love this series! thanks for all the work you put into this Eryn, good luck!
This series has only just started but I love it!! I'm really looking forward to the future episodes C:

6:14 As a kid, these DVDs I had had Panda and the Magic Serpent as a preview... and I thought Panda was the guy's name
Great job :) now I know that Sally was my first magical girls anime
Was not disappointed with this. Can’t wait for the rest of the series.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE
Totally worth the extra fee. Can't wait for the next episode cause it's much more entertaining than Googling it
Yes! I've been thinking about this new project of yours and here it is! Please keep it up! It's great
Guess you could argue that a lot of the cartoon physics and slapstick that go on in Princess Knight might as well be magic
Been looking for a video like this for ages! Yay!
Princess Knight looks super cool. I love Shows that play with Gender
I actually found the White Serpent movie a while back as a cheap DVD from I think Walmart for like $1 or $2. I sadly don't have it anymore though.
Keep going with this series! I really love magical girls 💜💜,and keep the great work.
YAS GIRL YAS.
love the series so far!
Yeah! I've been looking forward to this, really interesting video as well, wasn't aware of either of these. Thanks for the hard work and looking forward to the future episodes :D
WOW! Well Done!!!
I LOVE your content, and this new series is pretty good also! Is there A LOT when it comes to magical girl history?
Oh yeah, tons! The genre spans the entire history of modern anime, there are lots of shows for each era (especially in the 1990s and after), and they're varied enough that almost all are interesting enough to say something about (even the bad ones!)
I think Princes Knight is on Crunchyroll. In the UK at least. Might not be the whole thing, I should check that
Wikipedia says 52 episodes and that's what CR has so if you can watch it that's nice
Yep! That's the Nozomi Entertainment release of the dub. Sorry, should've mentioned that it was also available to CR subscribers. I will add a note to the description.
I have heard of magic knight, and it's sounds cool to see.
I find the tale of the white serpent a interesting story .

I LOVE Sapphire even if she's not magic.
madoka is best magic girl
I wonder if you will cover the thumbelina anime
Why do you always upload when I am asleep?
Geez, how are you gonna do Precure/Glitter Force? Review it season by season, or as a whole?
a Lesbian Princess born of 2 Hearts, sounds like a Female Josuke(from JoJolion).
This movie was based on an old Chinese folk tale, so the new movie is likely a new adaptation of the same story!
Good point
Finally a genderfluid anime character
9 months late
Intersting all around
ปู๊นๆ!!
What is the name of the background soundtrack?
There are a few different songs used! Which part of the video are you thinking of?
ErynCerise omg you ansered 🤩5:41 - 6:10
0:00 - 0:13
That one is "Stardust" by Soutfast!
ErynCerise Thank You😭♥️
Is this series cancelled? :(
No, it just takes a very long time to put together in between my day job and scouting videos. Lots of research, lots of editing. 😭 Next video is coming along now finally! Not sure when it'll be done but I hope sooner than later.
Mah ho mah ho in English is my ho
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Sneky Snek

So Princess Knight's super power is being non-binary? I can get behind that.
