How the hell do you leave Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha out of this video!? Nanoha was the perfect midpoint between the light-hearted magical girls like Sailor Moon and the darker themed ones like Madoka Magica in the 2010's, and it was such an amazing series!
Funny thing is the director for the original Precure Series was Daisuke Nishio aka the guy who directed Dragon Ball Z the most famous Shonen Anime out there. Heck the villains and the fight scenes are reminiscent of Dragon Ball Z.
So many magical girl stands claim Madoka was the first anime to bring tragedy to the magical girl genre and say it ruined it. But tragedy has been in magical girl anime for decades. Characters even died in Sailor moon. Then came back to life. I understand not liking tragedies in mahou shoujo. I get it. I prefer the happy stuff most of the time too! But you should not say it ruins the genre because it tried to be the new "edgy" thing. It's not new. At all.
about sailor moon, the author actually really wanted to kill off her characters from the beginning but her manga editor (i think?) was against it, so she couldn't and in the end the anime ended up killing characters anyways lol.
Whilst I understand what you're getting off of it, as a fan of both Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica; there is a difference between the two. Yes! Sailor Moon is admittingly dark and would have been fun if the manga explored the characters dying. The difference is that Madoka Magica set itself out there as the first show to leave a LARGE impact. All Magical Girl shows are dark one way or another, but Madoka Magica sticks with you. The first three episodes were extremely light-hearted and gave you the feeling this was a kid's show. But it isn't. To fully understand Sailor Moon is hard but much easier to unravel compared to Madoka Magica. They are both hard, yes, but to understand the true meaning behind both shows is hard to grasp. Sure, kids can watch both and say they understand it; but to an extent. Madoka Magica is good. Sailor Moon is good. But they're different. Comparing them to each other isn't what you should really do, as they are essentially different sub-genres. Also, who the hell says Madoka Magica ruined the genre? It just set out another sub-genre out there, what weirdos! ( No offense, of course, I'm assuming nobody who thinks this way is here reading this? )
Yes, Sailor Moon had some pretty dark arcs, but overall it was hopeful. Even if there was despair, it was only passing (senshi dying in season 1, Mamoru turning out to be dead in s5 - all this was fixed during a fraction of the series). In Madoka despair and hopelessness is the running theme and sacrifice is shown in a far more overwhelming manner - not only giving up life, but dooming yourself to solitude (as all the other Puellae lose their memories and reject Homura's claims) and losing your sanity by locking yourself up in a vicious circle. In a narrative solitude and madness is often perceived as worse than death, as the character becomes a prisoner inside their own mind. Sailor Moon never really went there (perhaps with Sailor Pluto, but it was only a minor side plot rather than the pivot to the whole story). Basically, the difference lies in the very roles of the mahou shoujo. In Sailor Moon it's about overcoming obstacles and reaching a bright future. In Madoka it's a losing battle and the best you can do is delay the inevitable, as the battle is endless. The first moment they subverted the genre was the idea that you first get your wish and then have to work for it - normally the wish/reward comes after the mission is completed (e.g. in Super Pig) In classical mahou shoujo series it's "struggle for reward" and in Madoka we get doom and gloom regardless of what you do - the good part (getting your wish) is already in the past and whether you regret having it or not, you're now a slave until the end of your life. In a classic magical girl series you expect the protagonist to prevail in the end; in Madoka you're prepared for her to lose so much that it doesn't come as a cliche when there is a happy (or, rather, a bittersweet) ending.
When someone says “sailor moon is light hearted” or “sailor moon is for kids” just make me think “have you ever watch Sailor Moon? (US 90s dub doesn’t count) or have you read the manga? (different and darker)
It's because of the '90s dubed of sailor Moon I thought that magic girls were for children & could never imagined them ever going dark or having realistic & or decent fight scenes... But I haven't paid attention to the magic girl manga or anime since Mew Mew power ...🤷🤷
Yeah, manga Chibiusa is an adult trapped in the body of a child, and the fact that many people in the new Silver Millennium treat her as such gives her one heck of a mental complex
26:08 Thats Yes PreCure 5 Gogo not "Yes PreCure" which was released in 2008 not 07 and wasn't the first "re-launch" of PreCure since many consider Futari wa PreCure Splash Star which came out in 2006 as the first re launch (since Max Heart is more of a direct sequel) already no one talks about PreCure and when you guys mention it there is a lot of incorrect information.
@Frank Marano There's no point in bringing attention to it if you can't be bothered to research properly beforehand. I'd rather no mention at all than getting the information wrong. But if you're going to bring up a subject, you have the burden of doing proper research beforehand, and if you don't, you should 100% expect to be corrected on any information you get wrong. They're not being ungrateful, you're being pointlessly defensive of Crunchyroll not doing proper research.
I feel like they didnt even need to mention Precure 5 or GoGo. Although they are popular, Fresh was the one that decided whether or not precure was going to continue or not. Whoever they got to do the research should probably have been a bigger fan of the overall genre. I didnt watch it because I feel they'd miss a bunch of things and focus strictly more on popular American magical girl series.
On one hand I hate the lack of mention of Utena because it did dark and gay rep before a lot of modern anime but also it isn't magical girl but magical warrior. But yeah if you want darkness and gays and other fun shit, check out revolutionary girl utena and it's movie.
Revolutionary Girl Utena is a deconstruction in every way. Madoka never really was a deconstruction, it's just a darker toned magical girl show. And a lot of dark elements were already in magical girl shows before Madoka: the only new element it had was the whole mascot character is evil thing
@@auralunaprettycure Actually I remember Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne already having a traitor evil mascot narrative. Madoka Magica is being credited for all of these just bc anime got popular in recent years and older anime doesn't get as hyped

Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew, PreCure, Princess Tutu, Ojamajo Doremi and Cutey Honey, Wedding peach and Kaitou saint tail (manga), mahou shouju site And mermaid melody, these are the best ones :)
That's a point, it might have been worth mentioning the heavily Sailor Moon inspired shows/kids aimed shows before going into the darker/parody era going on now.
I liked how Nanoha evolved from side character from Eroge into her own wierd magic/sci-fi bullshit, she even become mature and new series about her daughter who's name isn't Bonoha.
Wow, so many magical girls. This is a genre that needs more love around the world. If I may, I know there are a ton of Magical girls but I noticed 4 you didn't mention. Tokyo Mew Mew, Demashitta PowerPuff Girls Z, Robot Girls Z and Daybreak Illusion!
What you mentioned and Lyrical Nanoha, Prisma Illya, the tokusatsu magical girl franchise "Girls x Heroine" (Miracle Tunes, Magimajo Pures, Lovepatrina and Phantomirage), and whole bunch of others too. But lets face it...if they tried covering them all the video would probably be many hours long. lol.
The genre has a rich and long history so I can see and know that some were excluded from this video, but I'm surprised that Lyrical Nanoha wasn't at least briefly mentioned. It had that military aspect later seen in Symphogear (Also both co-star the great Nana Mizuki). It's got a weird history as the series was spunoff from a concept from the universe of adult visual novel called Triangle Heart 3 that followed Nanoha's bodyguard/samurai brother. It was also a series starts with the title character at 9 years old and continues to follow her into her 20s and we eventually see her and her former rival/best friend's daughter and her friends take over the reigns for two seasons based on their school life and magical mixed martial arts careers, taking a step back from her Mamas' and their friend's military work even though there are mentions and references to it [the 2009-2017 manga/2015 anime Lyrical Nanoha ViVid and it's anime-exclusive sequel ViVid Strike! that released in 2016 even though was still a year left in the ViVid manga's run]. There's 5th manga only season, Magical Record Lyrical Nanoha Force, that's been on hiatus for years but had concepts that made it to the recent Reflection and Detonation movies, that picks up with Nanoha and friends again, this time at the age of 25. And last but not least, of course the Akiyuki Shinbo connection as he had worked on Triangle Heart 3's OVA and the first season of Lyrical Nanoha.
an extra detail about precure: the Director of the series is the same guy who directed the Dragon Ball series up to Z and many of it's movies and it shows the quick combat of Dragon Ball can be seen in every one of the Pretty Cure series BTW what about Nanoha?
I love Tokyo Mew Mew! I read the manga ALL THE TIME during my middle school years! I really love the manga and the original anime. But the dub is so funny to watch and I sometimes watch it for a laugh!
You waited until you got the rights for Healin' Good Precure, eh? I wish you guys talked more about Precure in general, being the longest running magical girl series. HeartCatch was huge for making a lot of people realize that the magical girl genre appeals to a wider demographic despite its primarily target audience, and you skipped Yes 5 GoGo as a whole.
I'm sorry but you did not do your research on Precure at all!! You said "Yes Pretty Cure" Which doesn't exist, the season you were showing on screen was "Yes Pretty Cure 5 GoGo"! Also the original, Futari Wa, didn't have a "diminishing interest" it did well enough (Edit: In toy sales) to get a sequal with the same cast it was called "Futari Wa Pretty Cure Max Heart" which aired in 2005, then another season in 2006 with a different cast named "Futari Wa Pretty Cure Splash Star" that did good then we got another season, "Yes Pretty Cure 5" aired in 2007 and also did good enough to get a sequal "Yes Pretty Cure 5 GoGo" that aired the year after in 2008. GoGo was the season that nearly got "Pretty Cure" cancelled but Toei didn't give up on it and put out "Fresh Pretty Cure" In 2009 which could have been the last had it not done well, and we're so glad that it did well and made Toei make more and more seasons! There's not many people that speak english that talk about Precure enough so it would mean a lot to all of the fandom if you could get your facts right!! (Feel free to correct me on any of this!
I think I remember reading that ratings wise Futari wa wasn't all that good but Toei saw how good the toys the were selling and so they greenlit a sequel season
Yup, Fresh Precure was the "fresh" start for Precure, and it revolutionized the franchise. They really skimmed over Precure, not talking about HeartCatch at all
Ever since I saw Tim saying "Henshin" to imitate a Magical Girl transformation. I knew this was gonna be a misinformed video... -No mention of Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. -Misinformation of PreCure. -Also, Cutie Honey was first with the LGBTQ representation. -It's "Kinomoto Sakura", for you, subtitles not "Kinamoto". -I don't see Correct Yui nor Tokyo Mew Mew (Mew Mew Power). (Last one will have a new manga or anime soon.) Mostly Toei and other popular magical girls. -There's also "Ore Twintail", the first anime where a guy can transform into a magical girl yet still keep the formula instead of being just a parody.
The history of Precure could be a video all on its own, he simplified it to get the point across and move on, because he had to cram 50 years of history into a 30 minute video.
Yeah, lack of Nanoha is a bit egregious, it was the first techological magical girl series, tho admittedly it started off as a classic parody universe example (like Pretty Sammy was for the Tenchi universe). Nanoha predated Symphogear. Also, Toei's magical girls tend to use fisticuffs, even Sailor Moon. You can tell that Precure is literally cut from Sailor Moon's cloth, they merely just turned the full contact dial up. ;3
Yes, I can say that I know the Sailor Moon chant in English and Japanese, the poses, and the theme song by heart. Why do you ask? ... ...Oh, you didn't ask. Well...
I think "Magic Knight Rayearth" should be here. While it also has mecha elements too, the fact that you have some teenage girls capable of doing magic still gives testament that it can be considered under the Magical Girl genre.
>I would love some pastel colors and uplifting speech about the power of friendship Bruh, Magical Girl Site anime pretty much ends with... ...uplifting speech about power of love saving the day. The darkness of the series is pretty overblown, it's definitly dark, but not as much as people describe it.
Not ashamed to admit I watched every episode of Sailor Moon while waiting for DBZ on Toonami back in the day. That whole TV block was a nice gateway into a variety of anime during my childhood.
Back when Card Captors was airing every weekday morning before school, I Thought that each outfit was made by the fans and viewers of the show (hadn't quite clicked that it was from Japan) and I was super disappointed when I found out (about 5th episode) that each of the outfits were made by the in show character and not made by the fans to be presented by the in show character with the little scene at the end to give credit to the designer ^^; So my dreams of sending in an idea was dashed lol ^^;
Also I would like to argue that little witch Academia is a magical girl anime. Sakura really doesn't transform and neither does some of the early examples. And plenty of macigal animes that were included had characters classified as witches like precure.
Kelly Johana I agree it's not really a magical girl anime. Also just because Sakura doesn't transform doesn't make her less of a magical girl, the Ojamajo Doremi characters just put on costumes too. Also Revolutionary Girl Utena, which was made by one of Sailor Moon's directors also had the main character just put on shoulder pads. That's her whole transformation lol
Kelly Johana, magical girls don't have rules on how magic should be used, there are plenty of magical girl anime where the characters have always had magical powers, and not all magical girls are about fighting bad guys, the genre didn't even start as that thing
Everyone seems to forget about those two great series. My-Hime was a much better dark magical girl than Madoka. With only 12 episodes of Madoka, you get into the dark theme right away and dont get a chance to see the girls be...normal. So you cant sympathize with them if you hardly know them. My-Hime gives you 10 or so episodes to really get to know the characters, then, BAM, darkness and drama.
I don't know if I'd feel the same now, but I really liked Magical Girl Raising Project. The way in the beginning how alliances were so important because not everyone had every power and then slowly as they realized they were being pitted against each other. Whew very grim/dark
The Pretty Cure section kinda spread some misinformation, but I'm happy it's getting recognition. It's such a fun series 💕 Edit: *Lots* of misinformation.
@@TheMewtata They skipped Splash Star and said it was relaunched as Yes Pretty Cure, which is a lie. Also said wrongly "Yes Pretty Cure 5" and "Fresh Pretty Cure" (he said "Yes Precure" and just "Precure" for Fresh...)
Revolutionary Girl Utena started the deconstruction of magical girl anime in 1997. It was also an extremely dark series with adult themes. It makes me sad it wasn't even mentioned. :(
I’ve really been getting into more and more magical girl anime and I love it so much 💕 I love the aesthetic and as a seamstress I wanna make all the cute costumes (cardcaptor sakura and madoka win in best costumes category for me🌸🎀)
Sailor Moon is a cross between the magical girl genre, the princess genre and Anne of Green Gables (Anne Shirley is very popular in Japan). Tuxedo Mask is basically Gilbert Blythe.
This is a very enjoyable video! I'm glad you guys are bringing attention to franchises like Precure, even if your info was a bit off. Precure really has some of the best magical girl shows out there and a lot of them have fights that would make many shonen anime whimper in fear.

Imo Nanoha was probably the biggest bridge between lighter magical girls like CCS and darker ones (read, Madoka). It's a pretty important show in the magical girl genre that's sadly overlooked.
what the actual fuck. Nanoha is a Pillar in the Battle focused Magical Girl genre. And was the one of the inspirations of another great show of it´s same stamble: Symphogear(Another anime completely overseen until now).
I really love watching this video about the history of Magical Girls, so much!!!! I grew up watching shows like Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, and the others as a kid and just learning how very far the genre has come from its beginning to the end to the upcoming rise of more Magical Girls is just so inspiring and outstanding!!!! I'm very excited for what's to come for the Magical Girls, it's going to be awesome in 2022!!!!
Oh man. That was full of stuff I had no idea about. Also. Madoka was my first taste of the dark side of being a magical girl and I gotta say... it was jarring but captivating.
Leo Nishikino yes you should definetely check out Kamen Rider since it has a similiar mix of themes, and also Gaim is just a really amazing show. Also, pleaaase watch Princess Tutu, if you liked Madoka Magica I'm just sure you will find something to love in that shows dark, heart pulling story, the characters and art style are just top notch in that show...
I just went through comments and yeah, a lot of people noticed lack of Nanoha. Utena maybe as well. There has been a lot of magical girl shows which while worth talking about, they are not significant for the genre... Like: Hina Logi, Machikado etc. But Nanoha was a big deal and changed a lot. It was first magical girl shows straight up aiming at male audience which also was a big success.
The Latest Anime Movie of OjaMajo Doremi is said to be scheduled for this May 2020 but Due to Covid 19 issue, the studio decided to postpone the movie premiere to Fall 2020 so it can be somewhere between September, October or November
I was hopping to listen something about Revolutionary girl utena, it´s REALLY different to other mahou shoujo animes, are you telling me that a prince girl figthing for a world revolution with her sword isn´t revolutionary in the magical girl industry? (that was confusing lol)
It definitely took a lot of inspiration from the genre, and hit a lot of the major notes. But it is different enough that it’s ambiguous if Utena herself is a magical girl.
Star Twinkle is the actual 15th anniversary series but they pushed the anniversary celebration to Hugtto cause Lupinranger vs Patranger and Ex-Aid/Build were dying in merchandise aspect.
I probably would have given Madoka Magica a chance if I wasn’t surrounded by dudes who literally said “It’s soooo much darker than Sailor Moon” at the time when it was popular. It just left a bad taste for me.
sgtbrightside So true, I felt the same annoyance of how overhyped Madoka is. its funny too because Sailor Moon actually did get pretty dark. And one of the directors of Moon went on to make Revolutionary Girl Utena which is very dark, and of course Princess Tutu also has characters facing the nature of life and death, or sacrificing themselves, being horribly injured and lots of other fun stuff, ya know for kids lol
Did you ever try watching it? Would be a shame to miss out on a masterpiece like madoka just because you were put off by how people talked about it lol. There's a lot more to it than just being dark for sure
Please don't miss out on Madoka just because of his fans, it's really good. I think it has a different kind of darkness than Sailor Moon or Utena, not better, just different, enough to make it stand out.
I tried, but I couldn't get past the first three episodes. A good deconstruction is supposed to make you see something you like in a different way. It's supposed to express new ideas about the thing and maybe even redefine it. This show is actively trying to make me _hate_ the thing, painting every bit of it in the worst light possible. It's _punishing_ me for liking the thing. There's no breathing room. No levity. Just wall-to-wall misery. The monster designs are cool, though.
魔法 少女 (mahou shoujo) is not really a genre that I'm into. 美少女戦士セーラームーン (Bishojo Senshi Seira Muun ... Sailor Moon) and カードキャプターさくら (Kadokyaputah Sakura ... Cardcaptor Sakura ) are pretty much the de facto series that represents this genre for sure. 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ (Mahou Shojo Madoka Magika ... Puella Magi Madoka Magica ) is the de facto, modern representation of this genre. For those unaware, 美少女戦士セーラームーン クリスタル (Bishojo Senshi Seira Muun Kurisutaru ... Sailor Moon Crystal) is basically an anime remake of the original anime that is more faithful to the original manga source material. Think like the difference (sort of) between Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
Holy shit Madoka wasn't a deconstruction, why do people still think it is? It's a subversion not a deconstruction. Also how is Kyubey untrustworthy? The only reason he won't tell you something is that you didn't ask. No the powers in Yuki Yuna can't kill you, the entire point is you can't die no matter what.
Deconstructions typically show consequences and prices to be paid. Subversions show either role reversals or that the entire thing is just a big lie. I guess it's difficult to differentiate between the 2. Yuki Yuna is a deconstruction simply because of the price of power, as is Madoka. It's a bit difficult to tell tho, because some shows skirt the line. (Martian Successor Nadesico TV series)
GreatChicken2 Becoming a magical girl having a price for your power subverts how it usually works in magical girl anime, it's not a deconstruction as deconstruction are supposed to be giving something the realistic consequences, not just any consequences.
A lie of omission is still a lie and feeding people selective pieces of information is a bog standard tactic when manipulating people. 'You didn't ask' is a paper thin excuse. Also he's satan. He approaches young girls, offers to fulfill their wishes, writes a contract with them that binds them to his service and lets him put their soul into an object, this gives them magic powers, eventually this power corrupts them and turns them into witches (by damaging their soul) he then destroys the witch and uses the remnants of their soul both to fulfill wishes of other young girls and to stave off the end of the universe, ie judgement day. Qubey is satan.
Don Coyote The thing with Kyubey if I'm remembering right is that with the exception of Kyoko asking if Sayaka can be saved he didn't omit information no one just thought to ask.
@@hibubgames7667 As I said 'No one thought to ask' is a bullshit excuse that wouldn't fly if a six year old said it, much less some alien entity. Kyubey omitted key information about the entire process (this will destroy their soul and that will be convenient for him). It doesn't even matter if he is(as he claims) just mentally challenged (highly unlikely) and didn't 'think of it', it still wouldn't hold up in court if you put him on a trial. It wouldn't hold up in a casual conversation for more than half a second.
Has anybody here heard of the Fairy Musketeers? It's really fun but woefully underrated. It's a good anime you should check it out if you don't mind a lighthearted series with fairy tale elements
30:52 That's not the second child the world isn't ready for... Joking aside, I really dig this piece of history. For me, the best Toei Period would be when some kid shouts MAZIN GO! But again, that's just me.
What about Mermaid Melody? It's an magical girl anime where the magical girls fighting the evil are mermaids and they use their voices to win against them. It has such an interesting story, yet it's so underrated.
It's like a condensate review of Eryn Cerise videos serie about the History of Magical Girl, I hope she will continue her serie. Edit: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha and Magic Knight Rayearth no word about these show ?
Great video, enjoyed it immensely. You could also mention how magical girl anime has influenced animation as a whole, almost like a full circle from bewitched thing. Does the Japanese bewitched go farther than the original? It was cut off unexpectedly and now I'm curious if they wrapped up the story better in Okusama wa Majo
Also other thing to note while people are talking about Magical Girl series is that a running theme other than the power of friendship and love is.. Growing up. A lot of them have the bittersweet aspect as the realization of growing up and the act of growing up is a major part of their development as Magical Girls. Madoka Magica severely short circuits this and bypasses a lot of it by supplanting growth with edgy darkness and death.
This could use a mention of Dai Mahou Touge, which takes the premise of old-school magical girl shows but makes the protagonist a villain whose alternative to magic is bone-breaking grappling moves, and whose mascot she acquired by force with full knowledge he'd take any opportunity to kill her. Alas, the show is better known for its self-peeling potato scene.

Dude, amazing video, but... Did you seriously not talk about Nanoha or have I missed something? Nanoha grandmother of both Madoka and Symphogear. Kind of weird to not talk about it.
Good to see more people trying to spread the word about the early days. You did a pretty good job on that and I appreciate the effort! Madoka... mega popular and trendsetting though it may have been (oh god, has it ever), I still disagree that it's deconstructive. Even if you believe genre can be deconstructed in the first place (I don't [1]), it operated within its genre at all times. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it followed the nominal conventions closer than Uta∽Kata (2004) or even Prétear (2001). The weirdest thing about it was probably that Homura used ordinary bog-standard modern firearms and they _worked._ Did you really start with the third season of Symphogear? Weird. Also, Mecha and Magical Girls have collaborated for years. Nanoha was on TV in 2004 and you could say it was an old fusion then, depending on how you look at it. It's like Rock and Hip Hop. Ore is far from the only parody series; knowing the history like you do, I highly recommend checking more of them out because they're a gas! From a purely mechanical standpoint, I think you would benefit from taking the time to enunciate more clearly-- you sound rushed and muffled at times, which makes it harder to understand you. The other thing that I would recommend is working out how to handle Japanese names: pick a consistent order (family name first? Or given name first? You used both and it was weird.) and then look up how to say them so you don't wind up with things that are wrong ("Nejima", "Gen Urabichi") or inflected inconsistently ("Cardcaptor suhKOOrah", "muhDOUGHkah", et al)-- a bit of practice can do wonders! [1] Genre are loose frameworks of related elements that lack intrinsic meaning so there's no "text" to form the tension required for it a self-annihilate on examination
My top three magical girl anime: 1. Sailor Moon (the iconic icon of magical girl) 2. Cardcaptor Sakura (my first crush Sakura-chan no Daisuki.. Iya... Aishiteru) 3. How the hell do you leave Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha out of this video!? Nanoha was the perfect midpoint between the light-hearted magical girls like Sailor Moon and the darker themed ones like Madoka Magica in the 2010's, and it was such an amazing series!
That's what I wanted to say! Thank you!
Madoka wouldn't exist without Nanoha IMO.

When PreCure has better fight scenes than shonen anime
Funny thing is the director for the original Precure Series was Daisuke Nishio aka the guy who directed Dragon Ball Z the most famous Shonen Anime out there. Heck the villains and the fight scenes are reminiscent of Dragon Ball Z.

@@conradojavier7547 I KNOWWWWW fans have been wanting a fighting game for YEARS or something 😭😩
( No offense, of course, I'm assuming nobody who thinks this way is here reading this? )
Sailor Galaxia basically killed all Senshis minus Moon then ressurects them as zombies in Stars manga arc
Madoka magica is literally just gen urobuchi's take on the magical genre
When someone says “sailor moon is light hearted” or “sailor moon is for kids” just make me think “have you ever watch Sailor Moon? (US 90s dub doesn’t count) or have you read the manga? (different and darker)
Any cursory reading of Sailor Moon's manga pretty much debunks that preconception.
But like the Sailor Moon Fandom is toxic
It's because of the '90s dubed of sailor Moon I thought that magic girls were for children & could never imagined them ever going dark or having realistic & or decent fight scenes...
But I haven't paid attention to the magic girl manga or anime since Mew Mew power ...🤷🤷
@@spideryuuki6942 It's not

already no one talks about PreCure and when you guys mention it there is a lot of incorrect information.
Yes its annoying that precure was told wrong with some misinformation
I was so annoyed when he skipped max heart and splash star.
Max Heart is basically the Countinued Adventures of Nagisa/Cure Black, & Honoka/Cure White, but added a New Character named Hikari/Shiny Luminous.
On one hand I hate the lack of mention of Utena because it did dark and gay rep before a lot of modern anime but also it isn't magical girl but magical warrior. But yeah if you want darkness and gays and other fun shit, check out revolutionary girl utena and it's movie.

Believe it or not, now that the 2016 reboot is over people are asking for Z to come back!
And last but not least, of course the Akiyuki Shinbo connection as he had worked on Triangle Heart 3's OVA and the first season of Lyrical Nanoha.
an extra detail about precure:
the Director of the series is the same guy who directed the Dragon Ball series up to Z and many of it's movies and it shows
the quick combat of Dragon Ball can be seen in every one of the Pretty Cure series

-There's also "Ore Twintail", the first anime where a guy can transform into a magical girl yet still keep the formula instead of being just a parody.
It's not that deep dude.
Cutie Honey was a fanservice yuri bait. This is a rather dubious representation, in short.

Not ashamed to admit I watched every episode of Sailor Moon while waiting for DBZ on Toonami back in the day. That whole TV block was a nice gateway into a variety of anime during my childhood.
Back when Card Captors was airing every weekday morning before school, I Thought that each outfit was made by the fans and viewers of the show (hadn't quite clicked that it was from Japan) and I was super disappointed when I found out (about 5th episode) that each of the outfits were made by the in show character and not made by the fans to be presented by the in show character with the little scene at the end to give credit to the designer ^^;

Also I would like to argue that little witch Academia is a magical girl anime. Sakura really doesn't transform and neither does some of the early examples. And plenty of macigal animes that were included had characters classified as witches like precure.
Little Witch Academia can't be a magical girl anime cause everyone has magic and they don't use it to save/help people. It's part of the setting.
So, I noticed Tokyo Mew Mew wasnt mentioned. I know its basically got a a smiliar plot to Sailor Moon but I think theyre making a reboot or something
Sailor Moon was def the anime that established the magical girl genre we know present day, it also helped with the anime movement in America
Damn, was hoping he'd talk about some other pre-Madoka Magica dark magical girl series. Mai-HiME and Mai-Otome
What about Uta Kata?

Cardcaptor Sakura
) are pretty much the de facto series that represents this genre for sure.
魔法少女まどか☆マギカ (Mahou Shojo Madoka Magika ... Puella Magi Madoka Magica
) is the de facto, modern representation of this genre.
24:49 It’s about a duck named Duck. I laughed more than I should.
my access to anime was so weird that, Ojamajo was my childhood, while Card Captor Sakura was my teens.
Magical Girl Site is so terribly underrated ^^
Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura is my favorite.
Same here
I LOVE CARDCAPTOR SAKURA SO MUCH IT NEVER GETS OLD FOR ME
No Nanoha and Fate? For shame. Make one focused on it alone to make up for not putting a huge part of the genre.
Madoka Magica also got a side series called Magia Record based on the game
I'm waiting for that super sentai, kamen rider and pretty cure crossover
Great video, enjoyed it immensely. You could also mention how magical girl anime has influenced animation as a whole, almost like a full circle from bewitched thing.
Does the Japanese bewitched go farther than the original? It was cut off unexpectedly and now I'm curious if they wrapped up the story better in Okusama wa Majo
Make a contract with me...and become a Tragical Girl!
woooh helll yeah pretty cure representation! esp since pretty cure is given albeit weird spotlight for newer audiences.
no Mai-Hime, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (pre-cursor to Symphogear), Tokyo Mew Mew, or Utena. :(
Also other thing to note while people are talking about Magical Girl series is that a running theme other than the power of friendship and love is.. Growing up. A lot of them have the bittersweet aspect as the realization of growing up and the act of growing up is a major part of their development as Magical Girls.
Madoka Magica severely short circuits this and bypasses a lot of it by supplanting growth with edgy darkness and death.
I’m JUST here for Sailormoon...
Me too and Cardcaptor Sakura
@@Oregano65 yup same :P
Honestly clicked for Precure.
@@gota7738 nice :P
This could use a mention of Dai Mahou Touge, which takes the premise of old-school magical girl shows but makes the protagonist a villain whose alternative to magic is bone-breaking grappling moves, and whose mascot she acquired by force with full knowledge he'd take any opportunity to kill her.
Alas, the show is better known for its self-peeling potato scene.
That moment when you watched big majority of series mentioned here 😅
Just learning about the evolution of how magical girls were animated is fascinating😯😯
No mention of Nanoha at all?
6:26
I think that overseas people already know, but this is the origin of the are Rare Candy that appears in Pokémon
ふしぎなアメ Fushigi na Ame🍬(Mysterious Candy) ふしぎなメルモ Fushigi na Merumo (Mysterious Merumo)(Marvelous Melmo)
The same applies to 🍬Candy in MOTHER2
Dude, amazing video, but... Did you seriously not talk about Nanoha or have I missed something? Nanoha grandmother of both Madoka and Symphogear. Kind of weird to not talk about it.
That's great stuff! I learnt so much. Thank you for your research and your time 🙂 More anime history, please!
Sailor moon is the most iconic out of all the magical girls in Japan
Good to see more people trying to spread the word about the early days. You did a pretty good job on that and I appreciate the effort!
Madoka... mega popular and trendsetting though it may have been (oh god, has it ever), I still disagree that it's deconstructive. Even if you believe genre can be deconstructed in the first place (I don't [1]), it operated within its genre at all times. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it followed the nominal conventions closer than Uta∽Kata (2004) or even Prétear (2001). The weirdest thing about it was probably that Homura used ordinary bog-standard modern firearms and they _worked._
Did you really start with the third season of Symphogear?
My top three magical girl anime:
1. Sailor Moon (the iconic icon of magical girl)
2. Cardcaptor Sakura (my first crush Sakura-chan no Daisuki.. Iya... Aishiteru)
3. Madoka Magica (changed my perspective on magical girl anime forever)
Other Honourable Mention: Princess Tutu, Pretear, Precure, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Little Witch Academia, Shugo Chara, Kill la Kill
I was just talking to someone like "If magical girls transform why dont they ever change their body more drasticly?" Turns out they used to in much older work.
I loved Yuki Yuna. Having watched Madoka shortly before it, I was on edge every single episode as they continued to tease some horrible event that never came. Made me enjoy it even more than without the prior knowledge that these shows could go dark af :D
I wasn't a huge fan of Madoka, but I *loved* Yuki Yuna! Absolutely amazing anime.
You accidentally stated Madoka came out in 2001 rather than 2011, even in subtitles
