      I think the disconnect here is that they don't understand how unfair the job market is in Korea. You can be the smartest/most qualified person, but the wealthy person with connections will always get the job over you. When I was living in Korea, I saw this happening a lot in workplaces.
      Kwon is the only person on the team that doesn't have a tool he can use to get ahead. Sooyeon is a judges daughter and Youngwoo has autism (which is helping the agency's image). The average Korean citizen, despite having outstanding grades, struggles to get ahead. Him finding out that Youngwoo's father is involved somehow just proved his point. And he is not wrong in feeling how he feels.
      Kwon's character is a representation of the lower class "fighting" their way to stay employed at the top. While I, as a viewer, I cant stand his attitude and methods, I inherently understand his anger after witnessing situations like these for 4 years in Korea.

      @@mirdominance this. Even tho it makes sense considering her circumstances, seeing someone being given tons of chances and benefiting from connections suck. But really both have things in common. The fact Woo couldn’t get a job despite how smart she is shows how bad the job market is (besides the discrimination due to her ASD)

    My thing with the nepotism situation, it honestly doesn't make sense how much he's hating because of it. If she was an ass attorney, his outrage would be justified. But, she was top of her class and practically aced the bar! She has the education and skill. At that point, you're mad that you're not as good

      @blackfox4138 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In Korea, nepotism is WAY more frowned upon due to how the competitiveness over there is on another level. Legislation was passed to prevent this sort of thing from happening. To Kwon's perspective, regardless of how good she is, she essentially cheated her way to getting the opportunity while everyone else has to claw their way just to get recognized. It'd be the equivalent of someone becoming a partner because the company needed a diversity hire. No matter how good at their job that they are, there's always gonna be that idea that they cheated their way to the top.

    • @brittanybatiste7373
      @brittanybatiste7373 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      @blackfox4138 I understand the need for this law to make hiring fair and based off of ability and academic achievement, but she didn't cheat her way in. It actually was the opposite because she was discriminated against and only not given the jobs she would have gotten otherwise, because she is autistic. It was rigged against her, not in her favor, so this does not apply. He is just trying to find a reason to be upset because he is threatened.

      @@brittanybatiste7373 and this is why Kwon’s in the wrong. But from the eyes of a South Korean, this is why this is part of the drama. Woo fully deserves her position, but it looks as though she got her position through nepotism.

    Nepotism is a pretty big deal in Korea (much more than anywhere else in the world) to the point that they have actively legislated against this. I think this is something foreign viewers (myself included) could easily miss.

    • @Princess-dq2jb
      @Princess-dq2jb ปีที่แล้ว +23

      oh really? I didnt know that but even from the states view nepotism is expected only to an extent. Getting you kid a regular employee job at the family company or friends business is fine (like in this situation) but the issue is when its a higher postion like giving them CEO or an executive position when they dont have experience to back up that position. Kwon was truly doing too much ignoring all the set backs woo has had simply for her disabilities, a good attorney is a good attorney your competition should not matter

    • @gatesurfer
      @gatesurfer ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I worked for a family owned business where the owner had all of his kids work for the company, starting with fairly menial office work. Everyone thought it was great, because the alternative was to go corporate and have us be subject to a bunch of bean counters with MBAs but no actual knowledge of the industry.
      But I can see in a small country like Korea, where things are extremely competitive (those notorious cram schools!), how the slightest irregularity in hiring would be viewed with suspicion. I don’t think the term nepotism is correct here. It should be “having a connection.” Of course Kwon doesn’t know the actual circumstances of Woo’s hiring, so he could make the accusation of nepotism, but her father should not be using it. After all, it’s not like he went to CEO Han to ask a a favor. She came to him with an offer. That offer was too attractive for him to refuse, because
      there was no other offer at all. He could have done a better job of explaining that. But it is more dramatic this way. Misunderstandings always do that.

    • @BelBelle468
      @BelBelle468 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally I don’t get how foreigners could miss it since it’s not like connections and nepotism doesn’t exist in the west. Tho it could be cuz of the bs lies America spreads about how it’s the “land of opportunity” and how ppl should “pull yourself up by your bootstraps”. The idea that skill is the only qualifier is just wrong, but some ppl actually believe it

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That was clear, but she was illegally discriminated against by not being hired with the round of applicants who got in originally, so she would have had a good case for that, and for all Kwon knows, it could have been the threat of that which resulted in her late hire.

    • @gatesurfer
      @gatesurfer ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting you say that. To me, it’s very funny now to watch old shows, especially old cop shows, because they don’t have cell phones. The writing, and the plot lines can be really convoluted simply because the characters can’t call, or text each other up at the drop of a hat and tell each other what’s going on. And then it’s really funny that someone can be at dinner at a restaurant and somehow get a phone call from some stranger. Like everyone knows where everyone else is at any given time, but they have to go through the telephone operator, and then the concierge at the hotel, and then the manager of the restaurant at the hotel, and then a waiter. Then finally, the telephone connection can be made. It’s hilarious when you think about it now.

      I forget which famous writer (I think it's Stephen King) said this, but most writers advise that it's better not to include technology in your work bc it dates it. When you're trying to draw an audience into your world building you don't want them to be distracted. Modern shows don't have the same "ground up" build that fantasy shows do, and they need the audience to care about the characters, so they pull back on the tech (unless it's a show that purposely focuses on tech) bc tech is always changing.

And, now everybody that goes up against her gets demolished, except for two cases that were heartbreaking

If she was a bad attorney it would be a different situation, but she is clearly better than most of them, which makes her position in there totally deserved and completely fair.

    Recently the city hall team demolished a guy's house "accidentally", they ended up demolishing the wrong house by mistake. The conclusion of the case? The man was charged for the demolition service (without having ordered it). Brazil is the country where the state "helps you" without even needing it, and charges for the service, of course.
