After 20years in the military I can tell you that walls separating the toilets would be a luxury. I use to be able to ask a buddy for the sports section.
The whole soldiers farming thing goes back before the romans. Most civilizations have required soldiers to produce their own food at permanent installations. With the romans, it was said they used their shovels far more than their swords, both for road- and defensive-construction, as well as farming.
In addition to their reference of that legend, the dead General has Amontillado wine on his inventory, serving as a reference to the story written by Poe.
Furthering this more, they have a skeleton in a hole on the wall across from him symbolizing how two officers from the real fort independence got in a fued, and when one died, they blamed the other, and lore wise, they hung him in the wall. It didn’t actually happen.
From the beginning until now (I am level 51), I ignored settlement building, The Minutemen, and, of course, the annoying Preston. I used Red Rocket to dump my loot. When I unlocked The Castle recently, everything changed. I loved renovating The Castle, I love establishing and helping other settlements, and I love Preston. Out of all the factions, the Minutemen stand above all others as truly worthy of defending.
No, Ox. Obviously, those men were with the Institute, and they killed Gustavus Drane and buried him in the wall, and a Synth lived out the rest of Drane's life.
For me every settler(except children) is a Minuteman. They wear whatever they come with but I put a Militia hat or a Minuteman hat and I arm my settlers with a Pipe Rifle, Hunting Rifle, or a Laser Musket. I tried to make them more of a militia then a formal army.
I don't like the way they dress or the weapons they use so I usually give them Handmade Rifles or Laser Rifles with Combat Armor and Gunner Clothes just so then I won't have to defend them myself

hmm, no offense, but a strategist would make sure crops are kept inside the walls/defenses so that "in case of attack and or siege we could hold out longer, and maintain our strength while they grow weary in time"
I know I'm late and I don't really know too much about this, but I feel like there's a reason to keep things like crops outside the fort wall.. Yeah, it's more vulnerable to attacks and stuff, but inside might put in the way of people patroling, drilling, or whatever military things one does in a fort. Also you have more room to do whatever you need when you're not working within a walled in area..
Michael Sieberhagen I've just downloaded many mods for settlements so they are pre built. Just so I don't have to go through all the trouble with my lazy ass lol. It looks awesome too.
I love these videos with historial background. I knew the Poe reference, but didn't know the rest of that story, so that was really interesting, thanks! Guess what? - a few weeks ago, I was watching a British TV quiz show called 'The Chase'. There was a question asked which was something like "what was the name of the location in Boston that played a major in Paul Revere's Midnight Ride". Nobody knew the answer on the show, but I DID, because I play Fallout 4 and have learnt SO much about American history because of it!! It made my day, especially when people put video games down and say you learn nothing from them, haha :-)
Sorry for the late reply, I had something similar happen too, my sisters and I were watching jepordy one night when one of the questions was went something like "what is the name of the dam that was built on Lake Mead?" and I'm half-way through NV so I was proud of myself for knowing the answer :P
Mr. Oxhorn - thank you for the historical view of the actual building and island which you provided for us. Also, there being mention of the 1817 duel of 2 men that could inspire Poe. SUch a work of research, Mr. Oxhorn. Your efforts of Fort Independance ended up being such a lovely and hard hammering inspirations of Fort Henry & other elements of defensive stone works. You are a man to be honoured - even envied. Bravo, Sir.
Thank you for the history lesson Oxhorn. I love seeing the real life comparisons to the buildings from games. And The Castle is one of the most accurate looking buildings I've seen with regard to it's real life counter part. Nice touch Bethesda. Great vid as always Ox. Peace!
Taking inspiration from this and recreating it in VR. Man, these videos are so fucking cool. And it's crazy, that I can now personally walk around inside my creations. Time flies, but Fallout... Fallout never changes.
Hey, I had a question about VR. Does fallout play well with it? If so, do you ever get some weird dizzyness while playing VR? I'm afraid I might black out randomly if I try to play it in VR.
@@shahnazfiaz2015 It plays VERY well with it. Also, don't be afraid of blackouts. The dizzyness is your inner ear, trying to adjust to you moving, while you are actually standing still - same as the "travelling sickness" some people get, while riding a car or a plane. Worst that could happen is, you get sick and have to stop playing for a while. The good thing about this is, that 1.) you can train yourself to be better at this! Every play session you will build up resistance, until you don't get sick anymore. 2.) There is a (of course) a Programm for this! Try "Natural Locomotion" on Steam, it uses you natural arm (and feet, if you have the periphery) movements, to move your character in VR. You basically jog in place and swing your arms. This tricks your inner ear into believing "oh okay, I guess we are moving! No more barfing!" Very good 3rd party software. Hope I could help you!
Institute also refers to it as Fort Independence. In the first directorate meeting Dr. Ayo mentions increased presence around Fort Independence if you've done the mission.
Castle would've been a cool place to build if you could clear out the rubble, rebuild the walls better, and get rid of that fucking radio tower dead smack in the middle.
When you get the opportunity to enjoy the privilege, privacy is your most sacred thing in the military. Believe it or not, latrine and hygiene facilities are not co-ed, as seen in Starship Troopers. Food for thought on your next build, well done though.
There's a mod by ddproductions that allows you to snap a big wall piece into each of the two holes do you don't need to fiddle with concrete foundations.
As an avid shooter, I can’t believe I never thought of making that rubble pile into a shooting range. That’s an awesome idea! Great video, love watching the older fo4 videos while waiting on the next “story of fo4” video!

this a little late but i know that if you side with the railroad, post-game there are checkpoints all over the map with railroad agents that you can be randomly tasked to help defend. you don’t have to considering they all have gauss rifles but 🤷🏽♂️ sometimes they’re fighting raiders, gunners, animals, BoS, gen 1 & 2 synths (and a courser sometimes)
The room that you made a bathroom, I made a bar. I have 3 small tables that seat 4 people, and a pool table in the center with the triangle thing, the cue, and all the balls (courtesy of the Cabot house.) I have a t4 bar in front of the sinks, and I put alchohal on the shelves in the room. I have a disco ball, and every night from 10:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M. my all 23 settlers go and have a drink in the bar.
Year old but I’ll reply anyway. Come to the Southern United States. Many similarities between southerners and the Irish. Been listening to Sgt Ducky on the TH-cam and was thinking the same, in reverse.
I know this is really old but if you still play you should check out the military clutter mod if you haven’t. That’s one of my go to mods for the castle.
It may sounds silly, but I start playing Fallout 4 just in this year, in 2023. I wish I played it sooner, but was busy w/ Skyrim. :) Till now, I do like Fallout better than Skyrim ES V.
I'm about 20 minutes in and this is already my favorite among the Fallout 4-related videos I've seen on TH-cam! Very well done, and I will be using a lot of these ideas (along with the bunk bed idea from the Skooled Zone)!
When I made my first settlement at The Castle, I made it my main settlement where I lived and kept everyone important to me, including all companions except for strong, and Nick valentine (sadly Nick died fighting a mirelurk queen), young synth Shaun, and a few other people I liked and persuaded to come to my settlement. (Edit was where I fixed my mistake in saying "Mirelurk king" to what really killed him, a mirelurk queen.)
This is why I like oxhorn so much. He praises the good, and points out the bad. He gives his personal opinion as to whether creations from the creation club are worth it it or not. But most importantly, his content is based on logic and reasoning, rather than being an emotional response. I actually watched his creation club videos before I bought anything. Thanks to Ox, and his creation reviews, I have some extra content I thoroughly enjoy, and was able to avoid the creations I wouldn't enjoy. Bethesda have certainly hit a wall as of late, but let's not forget all the good they've given us. Hopefully they return to their roots.
I noticed there are multiple artillery pieces in this build. Is that for cosmetic purposes (it does look pretty cool) or does it affect the intensity of the in-game bombardments?
Throughout history farms were place outside of castles. farm fields needs soft ground for most plants. farms fields take too much space inside the castle. Once harvest their brought into the castle for storage that can last for months to years. When attack farmers would retreat inside the Castle for protection while military would set up defensive like anti-seige weapons, If they had the farm inside the castle the castle it's would not have enough room to organize military personal or giant defensive weapons.

I played this on console and can affirm I definitely had 50ish inhabitants in several bigger settlements. But absolutely love this. I like yours better than mine. My farm was inside the walls but whenever I reinvest in gaming I'll go with something like this now.
For me with my castle, I only managed to fix one side of the walls, I tried fixing the others but it was rather sloppy and due to the damages like destroyed building's and wall part's, I couldn't build the wall near the round lake cuz when I do that, it has this glitch when I go into the castle armory, I a piece of the wall just blocking the light, so for now I just built metal planks and put them against the wall, it's not much but at least it keeps the dame Raiders out, especially the BoS, sorry if I insulted your favorite faction

Well, combat armor makes sense since the General's uniform has a combat armor breastplate
That cover of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” is great with the castle!
Jeez Jonny went fucking everywhere
hmm, no offense, but a strategist would make sure crops are kept inside the walls/defenses so that "in case of attack and or siege we could hold out longer, and maintain our strength while they grow weary in time"
Kyle Sage What I was thinking as well.
Agreed, plenty of outdoor space inside the walls. and during the Battle for the Castle the Instuite attacks from that side too.
Soviet who Cuts But it is best to be prepared.
Kyle Sage I put the Crops inside just for the sake the Settlers wouldn’t have to walk far to farm.
This build is making me so jealous . Makes my castle feel like shit.
Michael Sieberhagen I've just downloaded many mods for settlements so they are pre built. Just so I don't have to go through all the trouble with my lazy ass lol. It looks awesome too.
Coming from Jon Snow that means something!
your's has a giant wall though haha
@If you can, fly Pancake! Not anymore...
Ikr
I love how it’s almost like a little history lesson as well as a settlement build.
Be sure to smoke in the armory
How do you explain that all of your settlers are females?
@AccountBlizzard Who wouldn't.
. i got fallout 3 vibes of that one dude...
I was about to say lol
Arleas oh i know why
Because he can plant his seeds and grow up more minutemens
I have all women at the drive-in and the gas station. All armed and wearing the little red dress.
"For the minutemen!" *Castle transforms into MinutePrime*
I love this someone quick create a mod for this
Institute courier coming back to see two big fuck-off robots attacking each other over the institute: "I have decided to retire on the spot"
For some reson this demands me of a transformers reference
Bravo, Sir.
Absolutely love the history and your builds. Would like to see some videos on how you personally build settlements. Much love for Oxhorn
Thank you for the history lesson Oxhorn. I love seeing the real life comparisons to the buildings from games. And The Castle is one of the most accurate looking buildings I've seen with regard to it's real life counter part. Nice touch Bethesda. Great vid as always Ox. Peace!
Ok have watch a lot of your builds and have to say Bethesda needs to hire you as a set designer. You do a great job making places feel lived in.
watch evil viking 13's settlement builds he really needs to design for Bethesda
Brian Ferry evilking is a slab xD if he made settlements for fallout 5 no pc can run it... because he builds big for the views
I think that Oxhorn would make a great radio host.
The good thing about this is, that
1.) you can train yourself to be better at this!
Hope I could help you!
it's still named Fort Independence in Fallout 4, it's just that everyone calls it The Castle.
A mod called "Spring cleaning" lets you do most of that.
Same with Sanctuary.
There's a settlement just like that. Here, let me mark it on your map...
heh
At least it's not raining there!
When you get the opportunity to enjoy the privilege, privacy is your most sacred thing in the military. Believe it or not, latrine and hygiene facilities are not co-ed, as seen in Starship Troopers. Food for thought on your next build, well done though.
I turned my Preston Garvey into Liberty prime

There's a mod by ddproductions that allows you to snap a big wall piece into each of the two holes do you don't need to fiddle with concrete foundations.
As an avid shooter, I can’t believe I never thought of making that rubble pile into a shooting range. That’s an awesome idea!
Great video, love watching the older fo4 videos while waiting on the next “story of fo4” video!
i never played fallout 4 but your creativity was nice to watch.
Lawrence Howe Hey Larry
they burned the castle? how? it's made of stone. stone doesn't burn so well.
Magic Molotovs....that's how 😐
The floors and most interior pillars are woods to reduce structure stress.
"And will all drink stone wine when Johnny comes marching home"
Stone wine= wine of amontillado, found on general Mcgann's body=cask of amontillado, a man sealed in a brick wall
🎵when johnny comes marching home🎵
When Johnny comes marching home again, hurrah! hurrah!

I love the minutemen and every thing about it
Who are you, nikki from appnanna??? 😂😂😂

would like to see how the "defend the castle" quest went for you're castle if you wanted to show us
The folks doing push-ups reminds me of Caesar's Legion Camps , oh the memories .
I dont remember legionaires there doing push ups. Either they practice with dummies, sleep or use their grindstones
@@siegfried2k4 I'm pretty sure they did, I'll be playing New Vegas soon , and let ya know :) lol
@@siegfried2k4 ok they do pushups at the Airport ( I was there had 1 guy doing them ) and the Fort when you walk down to the place where you use the platinum chip there was 1 guy lol .. this time of playing
That is awesome that you used vanilla stuff to repair the Castle. Really helps us console players. I also love the way you did it, where it's very minimal.
“ ok so I made this shooting range with just vanilla” proceeds to have 4 mods installed on it
is there a mod to make the factions active like you see them out in the commonwealth doing missions instead of asking you to do it
Shaquan Tucker You actually do. You find institute synths and brotherhood soldiers. But i get what you are saying.
A year late but the mod 'war of the commonwealth' will spawn a lot of groups of faction NPC's including minutemen. It's kind of what you looked for here :)
this a little late but i know that if you side with the railroad, post-game there are checkpoints all over the map with railroad agents that you can be randomly tasked to help defend. you don’t have to considering they all have gauss rifles but 🤷🏽♂️ sometimes they’re fighting raiders, gunners, animals, BoS, gen 1 & 2 synths (and a courser sometimes)
Is there a mod where we can have waves of brotherhood army or synths attacking the castle? Ny castle defenses are quite strong, but never used often.
@@darnit1944 endless warfare? There are different varieties of battle you can choose from and you can spawn them around the castle
This has to be the most educational Fallout video I’ve ever seen.
I turned my "castle" into a deathclaw pen
J.D Aldridge
Nice
“What are the minute men doing?”
“They have a death claw pen...”
“... I think we should work at a farm from now on”
Ah ha I'm not the only one. Mine is a gladiatorial ring. And the victor gets to enjoy fireworks.
Turn on Settlement Ambush Kit and then power off the cages:"Release The Deathclaws!"
Frost Heart That sounds pretty cool.
Frost Heart got any ale or mead
Eric Porter I turned that room into the mess hall where they eat
Love how you added "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" at the beginning! I always loved that tune
I give my minuitemen Blue Lightsabers
Ive never heard someone who wasn't Irish say "chew the fat". I'm so proud
Year old but I’ll reply anyway.
Come to the Southern United States.
Many similarities between southerners and the Irish.
Been listening to Sgt Ducky on the TH-cam and was thinking the same, in reverse.
14:24 that settler could be like your drill sargent, you know standing and watching them work while they yell.
ok craig
My gosh I love this guy's videos
I know this is really old but if you still play you should check out the military clutter mod if you haven’t. That’s one of my go to mods for the castle.
It may sounds silly, but
I start playing Fallout 4
just in this year, in 2023.
I wish I played it sooner,
but was busy w/ Skyrim. :)
Till now, I do like Fallout
better than Skyrim ES V.
Nice Castle . Anyway , there’s a another Settlement that needs your OWN help !
I'll mark it on your map.
Bro... brother, you took this game to a whole new level, it's unreal, in a great way, just... damn. THANK YOU for the tips and your time.
Everyone: “Bethesda bad 👿👿👿”
Oxhorn: “oh?”
@@leonhardt6105 Amen.
When I saw The Cask of Amontillado reference I laughed so hard. Wasn't expecting it.
Honestly I was expecting a much more extravagant castle from you considering your obsession with them, this is surprisingly modest.
I noticed there are multiple artillery pieces in this build. Is that for cosmetic purposes (it does look pretty cool) or does it affect the intensity of the in-game bombardments?
Just cosmetic purposes.
Multiple artillery pieces make strikes really long. the strikes only end once each individual piece has fired it's mortars.
wait,so having multiple in each settlement doesnt affect power and cadence of barrages ?
+Vimorain Only the length of the barrages. Alot of strikes in one place will do the job tho.
..."there are no Secrets in the Military" :-)
False
Hush now, this is classified information you're leaking.
they tell more lies than the truth
This is so insane, and I mean that in the best possible way. What an amazing work here!
Castle Island is so beautiful, I've been so many times
Why didn't you put your farms inside the castle. I did that by fencing it on the pathways

19:55 well don't take a shower with my sister
I played this on console and can affirm I definitely had 50ish inhabitants in several bigger settlements.
But absolutely love this. I like yours better than mine. My farm was inside the walls but whenever I reinvest in gaming I'll go with something like this now.
13:20 Does Anyone know what mod that is?
Panda Jack82 No, I can’t. Find it ;(
For me with my castle, I only managed to fix one side of the walls, I tried fixing the others but it was rather sloppy and due to the damages like destroyed building's and wall part's, I couldn't build the wall near the round lake cuz when I do that, it has this glitch when I go into the castle armory, I a piece of the wall just blocking the light, so for now I just built metal planks and put them against the wall, it's not much but at least it keeps the dame Raiders out, especially the BoS, sorry if I insulted your favorite faction
Use concrete walls, you can build them into the floor.
3:20 Wow, I thought that was just a reference to Cask of Amontillado! I had no idea that story was the inspiration for Poe. That’s crazy awesome 👏🏻
My name is Gustavus Drane but you can call me “Gus”
