it does exact opposite for wheel vehicles hobbies. gate keep just keep skateboard niche activity only enjoyed by a few. Biking is doing just fine with out gate keeping. generally it the stunt skater who gate keep.

you would think that the nature of skateboarding would gatekeep itself i.e. a skill-based & athletic physical activity, but here we are...

The initial gate keeping of skateboarding for big brands like nike is what kept the culture and respect by those big conpanies alive imo. Definitely communities should gate keep that or you lose all the soul.
Gatekeeping obvious hipsters isnt bad imo. There should be a tactic with it, like hype up local skateshops but gatekeep it enough so it doesnt get weird by hipster ideas/ crying.
Helping the industry blindly and everyone turning into fake shills even though you arent the one making money is weird and through experience through video games/fight game community it just gets worse the more shills it has (the pros hyping up bad games never being critical because its now their livlihood.
I also dont understand gatekeeping. If someone is actually interested then they will do it. If gatekeeping was as big as ppl say then we wouldnt have any new ppl joining.
For local shops/scenes they just do not pronote themselves. Its the easiest time with social media existing and accesible logo printing machines and now all the kids are back into alternative stuff/skatebosrding yet i dont think my local shop has a tiktok posting skate clips or their logo designs.

gatekeeping beginners is bad, but otherwise, gatekeeping is good for skating and people are allowed to have their opinions.

well for skate board sales gatekeeping is bad. The skater who just want hit up the local bike trail will struggle to find the right gear because everything is catered to the stunt skater. also the skate shop lose sales to online retailers because the causal skater is going there to get right gear to handle the local sidewalks and bike trails.

Been skating for 23 years and have owned a business for close to a decade. What your advocating for, in removing gate keeping, is Lasse faire economics ( or a purely free market ). What happens to marketable products within a purely free market? Commodification. The result of which turns people away, paradoxically so, as it becomes the very opposite of what was attractive to them in the first place. Again this isn't even considering the cultural dynamic. There is no easy answer, but in my experience skateboarding frankly demands a level of directive, authority, and authenticity.

I always loved Steve`s channel, I always assumed he was leaning into a character. and even if not, there's enough room in the world for both types of people. I for one agree that I dont want to watch and artistic intro shot of a squirrel or some shit before a skate video. be as inclusive as you want, but your not automatically a good person because you shit on exclusivity.

damn i wrote something super long and then my computer deleted it. Probably a sign to keep it short.
Anyway, "cool guying" is the lamest shit I've ever seen, and it's 100x worse in snowboarding (I started riding terrain parks at 16 and skateboarding, dealt with a handful of douchebags at the mountains learning, none at the skateparks - now that I'm decent everyone's nice tho). So many of my friends in their early 20's want to learn how to skate but are worried about being judged at the park, which is a false narrative for skating (at least where I live). We gotta find a way to change that and inspire the younger generations to get outside and pushing instead of frying their brains on Tiktok. I feel bad for people who say Gatekeeping is good, and I hope you're able to find something in your life that brings you joy and a sense of humility. We're just shooting ourselves in the foot by excluding others.
So sorry to hear about your shop, I hope things are able to turn around for you.

Skateboarding will never beat the accessibility of video games as well. Skateboarding starts for kids, rarely do older ppl have the time or patience or even friend group to learn and get into skateboarding, but hoping on cod, buying a gaming machine is easy. Video games take away far more people than gatekeeping will or has
Are ppl really hard gatekeeping like how these vids think though? I can't picture it nor ever really see it happening online or IRL especially. I live in Cali though.

    Amen brother 🙌
Seriously the thing that kills skateboarding is the skateboarders.
"Posers" buy things they think are cool whether they're good at skating or not. That helps the skateboard industry. Why hate on anyone who thinks skateboarding is a cool thing? It only helps the industry. Skateboarding is for everyone. I've been thinking about doing the same type of video because of all the TH-cam haters.
