Conrad Veidt, such an interesting, underrated and largely forgotten actor. He left Germany due to his wife being Jewish. Ironically, he's mostly known for his Hollywood career, which type-cast him as the N*zi villain, which he most certainly wasn't. Have a look at Different from the Others (1919), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), and The Man Who Laughs (1928). My favourite 2 are The Hands of Orlac (1924) and the British film, Passing of the Third Floor Back (1935). Such a shame he died relatively young.
Carl Zuckmayer's friend, General Ernst Udet, Der Teufel's General, was he the model for Hans Albers's character? Udet's did stunt flying for German films, and Robert Soidmak would have known him. In his O.S.S. report, Zuckmayer wrote Albers was a Nazi "we could work with after the War." He also stated Zweig's suicide "deflated" the emigre community. That suicide occurred 4 days after a German U-boat sunk a Brazilian ship.
Conflict with Goebbels In 1932, Schmitz signed a five-year contract with UFA, a major German film studio. However, Joseph Goebbels, who controlled the Reichsfilmkammer, the film industry’s governing body, did not approve of Schmitz. Goebbels reportedly disliked her quiet nature and her refusal to conform to Nazi ideals. This led to difficulties in securing roles and endorsements, making her career more challenging.
Enjoyed the film, thanks. 🤩

This was the first movie filmed on a color camera, but they didn't invent color film for another two years.
