Spoke to him in a hotel in Edinburgh a couple of years before his death. He was there with his wife Michelle and the Dotrice family.Lovely bloke and picked up my Durham accent straight away.Sadly missed.
What a simple yet thrilling film with a top cast of Seventies' British acting talent. I missed this sort of thing being very small back then, but I find this the antidote to the rot that can be found on the crap-pump these days, and relish the meandering but clever storylines and the actors acting and not merely standing there looking pretty. Thanks, John. As an additional bit of hilarious interest, I see that big Dave Prowse has had his Wurzel accent dubbed again!

People often use the word "underrated" when referring to very good actors! Woodward was not underrated but on the contrary, he was highly rated as a serious actor and rightly so.
given the age of the film i'm surprised that it's so popular - watch it regularly - if only the t.v. series was made to the same standard we could watch the series over and over

I was 7 years old when a magnum for Schneider was first show on TV, over the years I've watched it many times and each time it becomes more relevant in many ways, it must have been 50 years ahead of its self, Woodward played Callan well but lonely (my favourite, Russel Hunter) was a great supporting actor you couldnt help feeling sorry for him, allways in way above his head and as he often said "Mr Callan, i dont want to do this dont make me" . . Meres. Toby Valentine was also a great actor .they dont make them like that any more,

The scenes where Callan visits Hunter are very reminiscent of the scenes when Harry Palmer visits Colonel Ross in The Ipcress File. Never noticed that before.
I saw this film recently on television. The Jaguar in the car chase was manufactured in 1968 according to the registration number so would have only been five years old in 1973. A shame such a relatively young car got wrecked. In the 1971 film Villain starring Richard Burton a 3.8 litre Jaguar S Type, manufactured 1963 - 68, gets destroyed in a getaway scene.

A beautifully spartan & understated movie drama that typified Callan as a TV cult series. Just enough extra money and interesting location shooting to give it a sense of `place', and - but for the charming absence of technology - would pass muster even today. Many thanks for sharing...
What a great film! I loved this series on T V and for once the big screen didn't ruin it. Brilliant acting as well. One small criticism, the fight between Toby and Callan. Hmm, I reckon Emma Peel could have finished them both off with a swift kick to the cobblers. It didn't spoil it though, well done, John, thanks for sharing this.

I was thinking that Schneider sent the Greek and his muscle because Schneider was checking up on Callan because someone told Schneider that Callan had done time. So that Callan's stooge would have had essentially nothing to do with that. Makes real world sense. But such is not what Callan figured. Callan's little brain doesn't start ticking over on the matter until well past the hour. But, in any case, one can see how the German mind worked here. The Greek inquiry is to do solely with the prison record, as he was told of, rather than a more general interrogation.
If you could take the very best of what you know of Edward Woodward and distill it into a TV series spanning both the black & white and colour generation along with a movie and the occasional special, then Callan would be it.
Superb big-screen adaptation of the 1967 pilot A MAGNUM FOR SCHNEIDER. Great acting, loads of action, Callan conditioning his hands in a bucket of sand before chopping down huge David Prowse. Pity Anthony Valentine couldn't reprise his role as Meres, but at least we had wonderful Russell Hunter as Lonely. This was Callan's only big screen adventure as far as I know. Time for a remake?

Did you see "Darth" doing his thing in A Clockwork Orange? With the right script and director he could have been Britains best-ever villain. Would have made Vinnie Jones look like a pussy cat.
+john l millington The first 2 seasons of Callan are marginally available. They didn't save them, and the quality is horrendous. Callan 3:1 starts with Callan being released from treatment after he's killed his boss, Hunter. And he goes back to see the new Hunter to get his job back. It goes on from there. The picture quality is fine, the story is good, and the acting is excellent. I've watched it twice already. So yes, I think it's one of the better episodes because of what it is and how it's presented.
It's great to see Edward Woodward and Russell Hunter again, in their respective roles. This film lacks the gritty atmosphere of the series but is quite watchable.
I remember watching Callan in the 1970s and enjoying the tv shows. Seem to remember at the start of every episode there were a bare lit, light bulb pendulating in a small room. Maybe my memory is incorrect cos I didn't see this at the start of this show. And he had a side kick called Lonely. Memory might be wrong though.
Fun Fact: Yossi Cohen, the Chief of the Mossad, said that this TV show made him wanting to be a Spy. Another Fun Fact: his Mossad nickname was "Callan".

i never understood his treatment of lonely. seemed unnecessarily cruel and petty. BO he knew he had it and was sensitive about it. Seemed an easy target, bullying relationship. yet he seemed to like him.
No Anthony Valentine as Meers. Hmmmmmm. David Prowse aka Darth Vader as the Heavy for the Arms dealer. Too much. A damn good film with a good solid story, no cgi, No mindless violence as such. A Spy with a conscience.

My mum loved watching Callan when it originally aired. Russell Hunter was her favourite - you'd never guess he was from Glasgow!

Callan was and still is top notch TV.
Remember Russell Hunter playing Captain Uvarnov in the Robots of death(Dr Who-Tom Baker era) Great actor and distinctive voice.
Edward Woodward had screen presence. A top notch actor. Some have it and some do not - he did.
He and Anthony Hopkins would have made a great team. "For Whom the Bell Tolls". Throw in Robert Morley as their Boss.
I think he was classically trained.
Peter Egan in this, playing a character that Martin probably always suspected he really was.

Denzil Washington did a superb job as The Equalizer and I cannot think of a better person to have continued Woodward's exemplary legacy.

A realistic chase, without needless stunts. A shame they destroyed an immaculate S-type Jag...a beautiful car. Callan's Range Rover was cool too.

Amazing that this was also done in 55 minutes for the Armchair Theatre pilot in black and white .

Five years was old for a car then. They rusted away as you looked at them.
Most wrecked cars were not usually the ones shown driving about. Older cars, often with one side destroyed were used for the final shots.
All the villains drove a Jag.

I remember watching Callan in the 1970s and enjoying the tv shows. Seem to remember at the start of every episode there were a bare lit, light bulb pendulating in a small room. Maybe my memory is incorrect cos I didn't see this at the start of this show. And he had a side kick called Lonely. Memory might be wrong though.

Public Eye was another excellent series. Watching this seeing Routemasters is like time traveling. Bravo
Both programmes were made by the same company. ABC TV which ended up being part of Thames TV. They also made the Avengers.

i never understood his treatment of lonely. seemed unnecessarily cruel and petty. BO he knew he had it and was sensitive about it. Seemed an easy target, bullying relationship. yet he seemed to like him.
Lonely was my mum's favourite character in Callan.

No Anthony Valentine as Meers. Hmmmmmm. David Prowse aka Darth Vader as the Heavy for the Arms dealer. Too much. A damn good film with a good solid story, no cgi, No mindless violence as such. A Spy with a conscience.
