- Is this the best pocket camera ever made? David Pogue of the New York Times certainly thinks so (Click the link to view the article: nyti.ms/ND8Jiy). In this review I take a brief look at this large sensor compact camera and see if it lives up to the hype.

im going to buy this my first compact camera i own mostly 4k dslr's and need one for big events
Haha! I loved that "Night time!" transition!
Great review! I love the day time to night time transition :)
Amazing camera.. But its just too small
forget the stick on grips, they don't do much. this needs a real mans Grip !
I agree, much better review than the one from DigitalRev. Kai just talks endlessly about unimportant things about the camera and thinks he is interesting but he leaves us with so many unanswered questions. I think DigitalRev needs a new guy and that should be you.
It really depends on what your needs. If you want a pocketable camera and dont need to change your lenses and want a camera approaching DSLR quality, then the RX100 would be the better choice. If want a retro styled, interchangeable lens camera then the X pro 1 would be the way to go.
If you want to change your lenses the J1 would be the obvious choice but if you want something pocketable then the RX100 is the way to go. Looking at comparisons of both cameras, the RX100 even looks better at high ISOs.
Yep. There is a company called Recsea who announced that there will be an underwater housing available for the RX100 and I'm pretty sure there will be more companies that will make a housing for this camera too.
There is no external flash that you can attach to it. The bokeh is nice and smooth for a compact camera and the video performance is very good! I do wish however they included 25p recording as well.
My main concerns with the camera was the lack of the grip so I suggested using the wrist strap, the HDMI port on the bottom, and noise higher than 1600 but thanks for your criticism =.)
If only I had a pureview available I would. The RX100 is way better than that phone (it comes down to sensor size). For a smartphone, the pureview definitely wins points for innovation.
I want this for cycle touring.
Can it be recharged from a portable power bank?
+Zeus Canine It sure can :)
It can take stills whilst recording but it doesn't have a video light. If you wanted a light, you'd have to use an external video light.
Its definitely worth the extra money. The overall image quality and low light performance are a lot better compared to the Canon.
Just bought this on sale for 440 aud with shipping! Can't wait to get good travel pics at last
For portability the RX100 but for better image quality and the ability to change lenses and a flip up screen the NEX-F3
The RX100 is way better than the HX20 especially in low light situations but you are giving up that 20x optical zoom.
If you're not in a rush to get the camera, it would be good to wait for the 5N replacement. It'll be worth it ;)
I think Skytop should try it out at a camera shop to get a feel for the RX100 as its a really great camera
Yeah it does but its a tight fit which I don't really like so I prefer my jacket pocket instead.
8 years later, this camera still going strong!
you're 100% right
hi please tell me Sony rx100 or Samsung s7 edge for quality video as Sony rx 100 has limited zoom
HI John, I have Alpha 6000 camera and I love it. I wanted tiny camera and image quality atleast try to match with my Alpha 6000 camera. I am Considering either one of the below
Condition is best image quality
Sony RX100 Mark i or Mark ii or Mark iii or Nokia 808 or Nokia Lumia 1020
Which one is best for image Quality???
I would probably go for the RX100 M3.
Probably not unless you want a camera that will actually fit into your pocket.
Hi, John. I was wondering if you would recommend this camera over the Canon G1X Mark II? I tested both out, but I'm a Canon user and naturally liked the feel of the Canon a bit more. Thanks in advance.
It really depends on your personal preference. Whilst the G1X mark 2 will give you better images and has more features like the flip up LCD screen and more manual controls, its not very compact compared to the RX100. If you're looking for a compact camera, the RX100. If you don't mind the added size and weight, the G1X Mark two would be the way to go.
I borrow a few things from Sony but I also buy them too like this camera.
Ha. Loved the day to night transition. Good review. I think you just sold me one.
Haha looking back at this video... that was so embarrassing.
great cmera exept:
1. the aperture range is a litte disappointing Comparing to the hx-30v \20v.
rx 100 have 1.8-4.9 while the above have up to 5.8.
2. the amount frames per sec is also low Comparing the hx-30 \ 20v.
rx 100 have 2.5 frames pes sec while hx's have 10.
I got up to around 29mins in recording time. Just tested it =.)
i was checking at the pics of what i took on my rx100 and turned on the display for the pics i took, but noticed it didn't tell me where i had focused on in the pics i took. i know canon shows this along with histogram, but i only saw histogram and specs for the rx100 and not where i actually focused on. is that right? or do i need to dig further?
Yeah it won't tell you that information.
Really good and straight forward review... I really appreciate it. Would you recommend the RX100 over the Canon G15? I'm having a hard time deciding. Money is not my prime factor.. its low light quality with a fast AF in low light. thx!
Excellent review. I own Nikon DSLRs and an Oly 4/3s but am looking to get something which doesn't sacrifice image quality whilst allowing me to travel light. The RX100 seems to fit the bill.
hi John Sison,
i am from india i am grateful for ur way of reviewing camera especially with live demo .. i have one question its rx100 or nex 3n with 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 Powered Zoom Lens ( no idea of upgrading to f1.8 prime).... my interest is taking the photos of family/friend when go out for party/at home i NEED those soft blur background effect focusing a individual expression in the group.. which i should go for rx100 or nex 3n with kit lens ..thank u :)
Nice review - I do have the NEX 5n and the NEX7 - and they are super - but I am looking for something to put in pocket - I have a Nikon P7100 which has x7.1 zoom which is great - and lens is quite good - but now they have P7700 - a bit bigger than the RX100 but size still ok - I wonder if you have had a compare - like the RX100 but that 7.1 zoom is tempting - so still wondering which to get - what is your take on these two -
The LX7 was announced only about 7 weeks ago, there aren't any reviews on it out there as of yet, but they should be coming soon. dpreview dot com has a text based "hands on preview" w/ sample images posted on their site, and cameralabs has a video preview of the LX7 located here: /watch?v=QocoOtTOE0M&list=FLSHfBzBSZMwN5JB8mTVKpLA&index=35&feature=plpp_video the portion of the interview that deals w/ the LX7 starts at approximately 9:15 into the video since it previews 3 new cameras.
If you're willing to give up the longer zoom reach of the HX20V, and don't absolutely require the need to be able to slip the camera into the front pocket of a pair of jeans, & have very good low light shooting capability in an enthusiast's P&S, as well as the Canon S100, you could also investigate the Olympus XZ-1 (and look for any news of a new XZ-2 model maybe in the next 2 wks. or so), or the just announced Panasonic LX-7, w/ its new sensor, 921k dot screen, and f1.4-f2.3 lens.
Hi John,
Great informative video but the best part was the photos you showed which viewed on my 27' iMac screen looked pretty good. I read some reviews in DP Review and they were discussing the "noise" factor with the RX100. Some seem to think it is a problem. What are your thoughts regarding this. Right now I was about to buy Canon s100 because I owned the s95, loved it but lost it at the airport. Do you think the RX100 is a better camera and worth the extra money ?
Thanks, Wesley Wong
Not viewing a camera as an artistic tool, a great premium-priced & pocketable snapshot camera's "good enough". But if pocketabiliity & a huge w/ no real purpose sensor aren't the only reasons one buys an enthusiast p&s, I'd opt for (just as an ex.) a newly announced LX7 which is only .4" wider, taller, & thicker than an RX100 for $150 less, & has a faster wider lens, better macro & shutter speed range, an int. ND filter, a hot shoe, time lapse function, & non-camera dependent battery charging.
Best? With a slow F/4.9 lens in wide angle? Weak macro focusing. No dedicated exposure knob control, poor image stabilization in low light, very laggardly flash recharging causes 4 second waits, no dedicated on/off button for flash, no external battery charger, very small size factor with no grip, no battery charge indication, no manual comes with this $650 camera.
thanks. I will be going with the NEX then but which one. Rumour has it that the NEX-5N might be getting some upgrades [5R]. Should i wait for that? I like the flip up monitor and built oin flash but love the part-metal build of the 5N and 7 [the 7 is too expensive for me]. Advise plsssss....
you can buy an external charger with 2 spare batteries for like $20. It all comes down to image quality and this camera delivers that
i think it does bad in Greens as Colour Accrucy could be better in this camera and the canon Powershot s100 and s110 does better Miniature Effect.
But The Colour Green is Not Rendered as good as a Canon Powershot doesit.
At its widest its f1.8 so its not as slow as you think. Macro is good at its widest setting focusing as close as 5cm and with peaking built in its not too bad. I didn't find any poor performance with stabilization. Flash recycle time, I agree. The charge button will turn orange on the on/off switch. And to save you from losing your manual its built into the camera and a pdf version is built in when you connect it to your computer. Its not perfect but its definitely one of the best compacts.
your channel and TheCameraStoreTV are the best. why? because both of you are the cutest!!! (besides giving good reviews).
did you buy another battery? i will buy this camera soon, but curious about 2nd battery...also, i heard you have to charge the battery inside the camera...no external battery charger
thanks a lot,trying to search a review on the panasonic one but I can’t find the lx7,just the lx5. is it somewhat similar? so if ever I could just watch a review on the lx5,yeah?:}
I'm salivating! Like he said, I want this to compliment my cell phone and SLR Sony! The price point is just way out there. I would so buy it for 400 to 500 but 650 is pushing it.
I think the NEX-6 would be good enough since its small and compact already but if you prefer to carry an even smaller camera sometimes (like myself lol) for different occasions and as a backup, then this camera would be the best choice given the quality of images it gives you.
RX100 for image quality or HX30 for longer zoom but not as good image quality. You get 3.6x for the RX100 and 20x with the HX30. I would personally choose the RX100 because image quality is more important to me but its really up to you're personal preferences.
how about some pureview 808 review? do you think rx 100 is better than the pureview or is it the other way around?
I also wanted to add that I like to usually shoot with DSLR's and like to make pretty big prints, what do you think the RX100 can print at at the lowest ISO ?
Wesley Wong
I have just sold my EOS5D mk2 because of his weight and size (in my back in mountain while skiing is not so good) so I bought the RX100. Very happy with it
thanks. but I think rx100 is hard to find in the place where I live so if you were to choose between canon s100 and sony hx20v,which would be the better choice?:]
who is better sony DSC-RX100 or DSC-HX90V,i want your advice john????
+Arnab Mitra The Rx100 would be great for image quality and low light but the HX90 has more zoom, flip up LCD screen, wifi and a viewfinder. Just depends on what you features you prefer.
Definitely the RX100. It has overall better image quality and low light performance. The only downside between the two is the price. The S100 is cheaper but if you have enough funds I would say the RX100.
Hi ! I bought one after i saw your review.
I am going to new york this weekend and i am planning to take alot of pictures however i don't know alot of taking pictures and the features are overwelming :(
im going to buy this my first compact camera i own mostly 4k dslr's and need one for big events
help pls. I need to know which to choose. rx100 or hx20v? or is there anything better? especially w low light quality---images and vids. :]
LOL. The night time hahaha. Anyway it looks awesome. The quality seems to be on par with my old A55.
I would choose the RX100 for a simple and lightweight camera to carry around and the NEX-5R for better image quality and interchangeable lenses. It really depends on what you prefer but you can't go wrong either.
Hi John, i am thinking of buying a compact camera. Would you still recommend this camera today? I am looking for a camera that has excellent photo quality during the day and night. Please let me know. I'm open to any other brands as well. Cheers!
If you can find it for a cheap price then yes it would be a very good compact camera for stills for day and night :)
I have DSLRs and stumbled across this on CraigsList for $200 in almost brand new unused condition and am using it more now than my big systems. Shop around, you will not be disappointed. You can always look at Amazon reviews of this vs the newer versions and for the most part this gets the best reviews.
what about extra battery since i heard it drains pretty quickly? did you buy another sony battery? how's the quality for bokeh shots?
I have to say I watched this simply because our names are close (I'm Jon(athan) Sisson) but actually enjoyed the review :) Subscribed
True, but you can crop the pictures with the same effect and they will look superb from the RX100.
Thank you! I actually think its worth the extra money, if you want better image quality in the same size as the S100. Prints from ISO 100-800 are noise free but still look decent up to 6400 in my opinion.
You'll get about 330 shots with a full charge.
This best camera what i ever had in 10 year
All my video at 2013 filmed Sony rx100
do you think if i already have a nex-7 with 24f18z ,do i still need this camera in order to complete the system?
Please help ...
Wich one I must buy the sony
rx 100 or sony hx 50
Definitely the RX100 for portability and image quality. If you want the flip out screen, the G12 would be the better choice.
Nice camera.. I would definitely get it if it came with 24mm wide angle though.. I am spoilt by my LX3
Definitely the RX100 for low light performance. As for AF in low light, they're both quick and I would say a bit on par.
Have you had any problems with the camera overheating while recording video?
Is this a camera that you can use to record TH-cam videos? And by the way can you mount a tripod on it?
Yes to both
thanks for your prompt reply. unfortunately, cash is an issue. so i'm gonna get the s100 :(
Hi John, I found your video very helpful and informative.
I am looking for a compact camera great for travel and taking photos of wildlife.
I am considering either this camera or the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS40 (TZ60), which has 30x zoom. Is the Sony DSC-RX100 still the best choice even though it only has the 3.6x zoom? Obviously the image quality of the Sony is superior, but I like the idea of something with a super zoom. Please let me know your thoughts... Thank you!
Hi Emily, I apologise for the lat reply. I would probably go with the RX100 still. Whilst you can get really close with the TZ60, you could also crop the photos on the RX100 to get them to appear closer.
Parabéns foi bem útil.
BEFORE YOU SCROLL DOWN!!
This is the camera I used for shooting my videos and trust me, it works like a charm!! Audio is great and amazing settings on it. Aperture controls are so handy and the programmable ring is perfect! Perfect for vlogging! Great video by the way!
Haha thanks man! It really is an awesome camera.
RX11? I would choose any RX camera over the HX200. I prefer high quality images over zoom.
Thanks for this review, it was helpful.
Could you please explain whether this camera has wifi capabilities for syncing the images directly to google+ or anywhere else? What methods are there for sharing your photos?
I am considering getting a good pocket camera because smartphone cameras don't cut it and a DSLR is too bulky and expensive and I just won't bother carrying it with me. This one sounds good but I want to know how it compares to smartphones in terms of the procedure for sharing images or moving them to my computer / flickr / other cloud storage etc.
Also, the video you took with the camera looks really choppy - does it look like that in reality?
Hi Keren,
It doesn't have WiFi capabilities, although the new one does have the ability to transfer the images to your phone or tablet. The new one is called the RX100M2.
The video is my bad filming to be honest. It is capable of taking really great videos.
just got this open box 219.00 pretty happy will compliment my a 6000
I would probably go for the NEX-5R. I love the apps that you can get on it.
I noticed that the panning starting on 3:26 was jerky. I do not think that this was caused by your panning technique since the pitch is so constant. What caused this, and can you eliminate it in the same situation?
To be honest I'm not too sure but footage straight out of the camera is a lot smoother than what was in the sample footage in the video.
How did you edit it then? I am a Mac user and edit clips in iMovie and FinalCut Express. RX100 M2 is my main candidate for my next compact camera. I do not want this to happen to me. Thank you.
づんく Dzunku I think it was shot in MP4 which was easy to edit or I may have converted it in final cut. Sorry I really can't remember because it was quite a long time ago.
Hmmm three to four hours? lol
hey dude all that pics you show in this video is actually taken by this camera, please reply i need to know. and nice video :)
+Raj Sharma All of the photos in this video are shot with the camera :)
+John Sison okay thank you very much.. :)
can you post an audio test for us from this camera, when you shoot the video? The video is very important to me, and what I've noticed sony lacking before was clear, rich audio during the video - usually audio is sharp and almost scratchy in these cameras, including the dslrs..
Is it true you can only charge the camera by connecting it to your computer? If you were to go out for the day shooting photos, and videos, would it last you another day? I thought this camera would be good for vacations but if you don't have a computer to connect to this could be a problem.
You can get an external charger which is an optional accessory.
John Sison Yeah I looked into it. It looks like it charges by USB, and I have a wall plug that has 2 usb slots so I should be good. I just ordered this.. woo!!
Can it take stills while recording nd does it have video light?
Hello John,
Is there a great difference between rx100 mark 1 and rx100 mark 4 in terms of image quality?
+Beljoe Abao Its certainly improved in terms of image quality especially when it comes to low light situations but its not a whole world better. You're really just paying more for the latest tech and hardware.
+John Sison thanks for the reply, I've just bought a 2nd hand rx100 mark 1 for 162 usd a while ago. Your reviews are great (short and informative). Can you do a memory recall (MR) mode set-up video for rx100? :)
+Beljoe Abao I just took a quick look online and it says you can do MR for video settings.
Thanks for the compliment! I hope you enjoy the future content on this channel =.)
Can you recommend this cam in 2018, for beginners?
I'll do my best to get that reviewed but I have to show some love for the E-mount lens too
Ok thanks John I like you and your videos can you tell me a 1inch sensor large zoom lens camera. Point and shoot below 510dollars I will be grateful to you
You're welcome! I can't think of any camera below that price point. They all are expensive than that but a few choices are the Sony RX10, Canon G3X and Panasonic FZ1000 or TZ110.
haha how much did you have to wait until the sun went down?
Oh wow good eyes. The camera was using 24 hour time.
Thanks for the review! I own a NEX-6 and was wondering if you think that the RX-100 could work as a backup everyday camera for me, or do you think it would be to much?
can you tell where to buy this? and which one? thanks.
rx100 or sony nex 5r ? which one is worth buying.. :)
01:03 the time on the camera is 13:37! Did you notice?
Like-no-other daytime to night time transition. Haha
