Agree that that this is currently the best P&S. Just upgraded from the HX9V as well. It won't quite replace my 5DIII, especially with my 50mm 1.2 or 85mm 1.2. But I will likely end up using the RX100 more, simply because I will have it with me all the time. You can perform AEL by assigning this function to the center button in the middle of the control wheel. Alternatively, the left and right buttons on the control wheel can be assigned to this function. Enjoyed your review. Thanks.
In addition to touch-focus and flip out screen, I would certainly want a front-side grip (like on the HV20) for ease of hold and avoid the risk of damaging when it falls.
Tougher than it looks huh :) As folks will find out, different coatings are used and some are friendly and some are not. The coating on the Sony LENS is not a friendly coating and it is hard to clean. I found that out real quick. I had to use my SensorSweep to get it done. I know, I am plugging my own stuff, but this sucker was hard to clean, and fogging it with my breath (no spit please) and using the SensorSweep was how I finally got it clean. Use the PeterGregg site link below to see it.
Hi Mr. Gregg, Well now I am a fan. Your vid was really well done and now it is time to get my Sony. Sold!! You are very clear and of course informative. I have read about this camera and I believe it also is ready to hunt bear all from your pocket. 'The best camera in the world ,I have heard it said, is the one you carry with you! "Thank you, Mr. Gregg
As xohmer said below, I added AEL to the LEFT button and moved the DRIVE mode to the Fn button. Now, I use the AEL lock to lock in exposure and then select my own focus point using the center button to activate the Flexible Spot and then use the arrows to move the focus point around. I am also adding grip (Google RX100 grip) and the brown or black Gariz case (Google Gariz case rx100). It has a metal base plate and moves the tripod screw to the center of the lens where it should be.
Thanks! A very entertaining review. I just ordered it yesterday for $408. Not the RX 100ii (can't justify the extra $ for the pivoting panel and a hot shoe I'd never use).
Great video, thanks. I sold my NEX6 and lenses when I switched to a Sony RX10 as I shoot stage productions and fumbling around in a darkened theater to switch lenses on the NEX6 was a pain. Also wanted a "take everywhere" camera and a backup to the RX10. Previously had sold my Sony HX9V, so thought I'd try the Pany ZS40. Image quality was awful compared to what I was used to from Sony, so sent the Pany back and just ordered a "new, in box" used RX100. Can't wait to get it. Also ordered White's guide to the camera for my Kindle. I like his guide books. Wish me luck. Love your videos! Thanks!!!
Bought this camera. Like it. Replacing my Canon S100 because the Sony RX100 is better in both clarity and sharpness, period. Each camera has pros and cons, but the Sony is the hands-down winner for image quality in my opinion. My new compact backup for my DSLR (D700).
hey peter thanks for the video. learned a lot. would you suggest me to wait for a new version of rx100 hopefully by next summer or fall when they work out the kinks of a first gen.
spot on review - wished it had the shoot to touch as well but hardly no cameras have it - and not always spot on like I have seen in the OMD but still a nice feature - as far as a flip screen - maybe a bit to much to ask for given the form factor - I would be afraid that it would make the camera not so sturdy - it needs to be as it will be in pockets and purses so it will take more beating then your OMD for example as it will always be in a camera bag for the most part. but an awesome gem
Awesome depth of field! You lean back and boom you're out of focus. Loves that. Good video, unfortunately the RX1 is way to expensive, not for what it delivers but for the average consumer. I think Sony has got too many different models in the same price range, That's confusing.
Hey Peter... Nice review... One quick question, What did you film this video with? Really nice and Sharp and Love the contrast... WOuld you mind saying what you filmed your (this) video with... Looks really nice. Your lighting set would be great to know also if you do not mind...Thanks again
Hey thanks, that worked well :) I put it to the LEFT button on the circular wheel and put the drive mode into the Fn button. Works well for me. I would also like to know if there is a short cut to put the focus point back to the center when it is far off center? Peter
hello, did you already find a solution for the focus and recomposition?? CAN you do it with this camera? With my dSLR, I do that all the time actually..... tnx.
I disagree! Peter points out what the RX100 is good for. It's for people who just want high image quality without carrying around a bulky photo device. Peter knows what he is talking about, he's a professional photographer.
Dear Sir. I own a Nikon d600, which is terrific, but I am seeking to upgrade. Besides the 36 pixel resolution, is it a better camera? Am i getting more, like the shutter speed for example?
Thanks for the great review Peter. I just sold my Canon S100. I enjoy your opinion and agree to the extent that this little camera is by far Sony's greatest small camera to date but you may have over looked to mention that for the size of your G10 and same or similar dollar value of the Rx100 we can step up even more with Canon's G1X, bigger sensor and many more pluses. Subscribe to my channel. I will be making a video in the near future explaining all the aspects of making a successful TH-cam video as i get many questions on this topic.
It isn't too bad, I have one of those still here. If someone wants to borrow a camera i lend them that one :) it has a great stabilization system and the images are very good, and so is the video. it isn't as good as the new ones today, but for a $100, which is about $110 here in the USA, that is a pretty good price. The bigger question is what else can you do with that same money? After you buy it, will you be sorry you didn't buy something else for more money? On the other hand, a young person or a teen would love to have this camera, so it very well does have its positives!
The more I learn about this little beast the more I want one!
Started followin' few days ago while checkin out Nikon DSLR, i love your explanations & general delightfully funny spins on things. good stuff
I never owned a DSLR and I wanted to buy one but after this camera came out I changed my mind and now I want to buy the Sony RX-100 :)
I like your style Peter.. Looks like a great camera. I'll get one in the sales.

Just sold my 5D Mk2 for this Sony! Almost (for my needs) the same quality with quarter cost and weight

Did I hear him right, zoom goes upto 100mm? If so how come and is it any good compare to any other camera with that zoom..?
If I remember all the info properly, the Sony RX100 lens is 28-100mm, f/1.8-4.9 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens.

Subscribe to my channel. I will be making a video in the near future explaining all the aspects of making a successful TH-cam video as i get many questions on this topic.
guy,u missed another point, this camera is so small and really makes it hard to hold in hand.sony need to build grip for it
How would you compare this to the similarly priced Sony NEX-5T?
He said NEX-7 is a tap screen; it's not touch screen.
Sorry correct 20.9 meg
Good review but you took forever to get to the point..
Hi Peter, would you pay 180 euro today for a new RX100?
It isn't too bad, I have one of those still here. If someone wants to borrow a camera i lend them that one :) it has a great stabilization system and the images are very good, and so is the video. it isn't as good as the new ones today, but for a $100, which is about $110 here in the USA, that is a pretty good price. The bigger question is what else can you do with that same money? After you buy it, will you be sorry you didn't buy something else for more money? On the other hand, a young person or a teen would love to have this camera, so it very well does have its positives!
Thanks Peter for that quick response.
The camera was out of date when he finished review.
In image quality, the RX100 beats the "latest" Canon G9X and ANY of the "latest" tiny sensor gimmicky smartphones that cost 4X.
drax franky I have the rx100 myself and it is a great camera, but when you are given to much poor information you start to loose interest.
We know that he is peter and it is his impression so don't bothor us by putting those lines in front of us each 2mins
