My first ever Boardgame I got into from Kickstarter was Zpocalypse and I had seen & heard about Zombicide when I was looking for other games to get into and told myself "I don't need another Zombie boardgame". Aaand fast-forward and Zombicide has become one of my favorites and easily surpassed Zpocalypse pretty much instantly with Invaders & 2nd Edition. Funny how the world works. Could been if I got into Season 1-3 Zombicide instead, I may have not liked it or looked into CMONs future products.
Since adding zombie wolves and archers my gaming group is struggling with black plague for sure, but we can still win if we're on point for every turn!

So I am new to zombiecide, and I am new to your videos, but I have a question about the models, are they paint ready or do they need to be primed before painting?
I would say that the most relevant factor to decide upon the 2 is wich theme you like the most for zombies. As gameplay wise both have slight advantages or disvantages upon the other, but nothing big enough to say that one is clearly better then the other.
Yes, this. I have Black Plague and there are only 3 types of zombie and 1 abomination. I'm not sure it's fair to include a pile of expansions on one side.
True, but the requirement of owning tons of prior content or hunting it down, plus the fact that many won't want to combine older sculpts, it's trickier to include those.
To be fair. 2nd Ed just launched and Black Plague has tons of addons that increase variety. 1st Ed hat tons of zombie variations too: toxic, berserker, seekers, birds, dogs, skinners... and all of those can be used in 2nd Ed too of you got the Zombies and Companions Upgrade Kit. Just saying :)
Thanks for the video, great stuff! I'm surprised you compared 2nd Edition against Black Plague WITH ALL EXPANSIONS only. Kind of unfair? Would have been interesting to hear base game vs base game.
I'm still hopeful that it'll be awesome... But playing this unbalanced campaign certainly has me wondering.

One thing that is not clear, comparing only the base games which one is better, sadly for me getting a game with all the expansion is pretty tough for shipping and availability reasons
Base alone would be harder to say....I think I could make a strong argument for either there, but I would personally still lean Black Plague.

Alright I'm at 1:07 and I'm going to make a prediction that Alex let's his love of the theme for black plague win out over everything else. I'm hoping to hear about game changes and which system is better etc also so let us see... hopefully Shira can keep this thing on the rails.
7:00 instead of CMON making something to say the differences in editions how about something that can pull older editions (like black plague) forward to the new rules?
Okay so I have watched several videos where Alex has said that he's keeping Black Plague and will probably get rid of Invader and Second Edition. Coming into this video with that knowledge I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised by how neutral the discussion remained.
This is EXACTLY the video that I wanted. I'm stupid and didn't back 2nd edition and I'm still kicking myself. I really want to know if it's worth getting when I already have Invader and Black Plague. Thank you Alex and Shira!

@@tomee639 I had the complete modern first edition, except for the VIP zombies and all the exclusive stuff from the KS (wich I don't miss at all). I never felt like getting the medieval ones. I LOVE medieval settings (am I'm RPG writter and my first book was medieval fantasy). But I prefer the modern theme FOR ZOMBIES. Invader I was inclined to buy for the gameplay alone. I also love the space theme, but it don't seem to be ZOMBIEcide (should have being called aliencice). I only play custom missions, so TO ME, the second edition was a no brainer. Just the new tiles with dark rooms was enough to convince me. Having the 2 campaings to play is also something I'm VERRY interested to see, as it adds a narrative element to the game that was missing in my opinion (also, more tiles and game elements for custom missions!).
I have everything from zc besides Green horde. Skipped it because of the lame Trebuchet thing.. I am sooo in love with the new campaign modes in zc2, adding soo much more depth with the all-out plus the campaign progress. The thing i really miss in Zc2 is the focus fire from Invader. This was absolutely awesome. No more kiting abominations.. Sadly the removed it. Overall we think Zc2 is the best game of the whole Franchise. Great vids!! Thx!
And it didn’t have Kickstarter exclusive listed on it so it can be bought in stores at some point. Also upgrades the companions from first edition. Of course all the old characters were in the reboot box though
Great compare! I did never get the "real" zombie feel from Black Plague, to me it is as any other dudgeon crawler with freaky monsters. It need to be closer to the traditional theme, more like The Walking dead. It´s not about taking out different kind of monsters but about the story, planning, resources and tactics around traditional Zombies. Its however clear with Night of the Living Dead: A Zombicide Game that this is not easy to get right.
I have green horde technically i can use my green horde and play it as black plague. All i have to do is use the black plague rules and get the BP extra tile set. And not use the trebuche.
Black Plague is pretty much unobtainable on Polish market whereas Green Horde is very common and not that expensive. Are there any huge advantages of Black over Green that make the latter not worth it?
A lot of verity will come if you go after the first edition boxes toxic city mall, angry neibors, season 2 prison outbreak and season 3 rue morgue add a lot of content
Very true. It's hard to compare these apples to apples without adding in all the 1st edition expansions. I hope they reprint/update the first edition expansions to go along with second edition.
Your accurate as far as price wise on the original pledge comparisons, however, for someone that missed both campaigns. Trying to get the complete Black Plague ends up being way way more expensive due to how long it has been out and generally more liked. I find second edition easier to find since it is more recent and people are just getting their pledges, therefore more people willing to part with their copies. Overall, price wise, if I wanted the complete Black Plague, I would pay a hefty price trying to piecemeal all of the kickstarter extras that were involved. Also, if we are just talking base retail boxes... that isn't really Zombicide. The KS extras are where it's at.
Damn this got uploaded a week too late. Been deliberating between the two for a few weeks and eventually pulled the plug on Second Edition last week. Already played a whole bunch of just core and enjoying it a lot. Can’t wait to crack open the campaign boxes.
thanks for the review. I'm curious does expansions like Washington ZC add more fun to the core box. Also, isn't there many other Zombicide expansions out there that are compatible with 1st edition? Which I wonder means also works with 2nd edition? Would those expansion help solve the lack of variety issue you mentioned? For context, I have never played any version of zombicide before, I just ordered a copy of the 2nd Edition (can only get the core box). I figure I could get some expansions later.. if they are compatible.
Their whole point was that 2nd was only fun in campaign (W Z.C., Fort Hendrix). I only owned the first edition and for me the 2nd edition makes it more fun just by the fact that you CAN shoot into a zone where a survivor is and you might not hit them. In the first edition you where guaranteed to hit them. Also, 2nd edition is easier to set up and get to playing than the 1st edition. I play with my wife and kid (6 years) primarliy. I agree that CMON should have incorporated the campaign stuff more into the main game.
I can't get enough Zombicide! Got into it & CMON with Invaders and became addicted ever since. Been heavily playing 2nd Edition and I love the game, the Survivors and stretch Goal Zombies and the optional buy of Urban Legends Abomination pack. I've Late Pledged Zombicide Undead or Alive at the Base Pledge and intend to get the 2 Abomination pack Optional Buys. I wasn't too impressed with their Expansions for Undead of Alive like I was with Invader's Black Ops & Dark Side and 2nd Edition's Washington ZC & Fort Hendrix Expansions. I'm really curious to see what CMON will do with Zombicide going forward. I know I'm a dork but I'd love something to get us Zombie Dinosaurs xD maybe do something akin to Jurassic Park with a Genetics/Sad Science angle. Edit: as an aside, I know we all have our own tastes and opinions but I think it's harsh to say the Wild West setting is "dumb". Lot of fun use of such a theme and setting. Red Dead Redemption 1 had a Zombie dlc bit that was well beloved. I dunno I'm up for many different settings and themes for Zombicide. Invaders is my favorite setting with ties to Warhammer, Aliens, Dune, and games like Dead Space etc. The original 3 Seasons of Zombicide are the only ones I wasn't taken to. Black Plague looks OK at best for me. Green Horde is the only Zombicide before Invaders that I would want and nearly got with CMON's Time Travel Kickstarter
@@edwinbiggs8819 Not in Germany sadly. I just checked MM (they have a really good price for hate) - but shipping is about 60USD and VAT comes on top of that.
Do u randomize characters when playing a new game? I found the set up to be a little slow for Zombiecide and the game was far too easy to build characters or farm and then just demolish the map. The game is also very solitaire-esque where there's just the best move so you don't need real teammates and can just use ai or dummies allies. The scenarios are cool. I think if you paint the Minis it could feel a little more epic it's very similar albeit an easier version of hero quest without the leveling system.
New to zombicide, was made aware by the marvel zombies upcoming. I want a more traditional set, I think I wanted 2nd edition to come out on top, I do love the fantasy setting but was hoping in a way the newer version might come out on top I’m so conflicted in what to buy! … would you recommend Black Plague with the expansions including green horde or just the wolves, ghosts and friends expansions (forget the actual names now)
Random question: In a previous video you mentioned you liked Ausonia. I'm thinking of buying it -- can you expand on what you liked about it? Thanks and love the channel!
I sold off Green Horde as the gameplay just felt very slow and fiddly with the hedge mechanics and catapult. But I have to say I kept No Rest for the WIcked & Friends & Foes Plus the Horde Box to max out the missions in the other three books of missions. My favourite enemy type has to be the ghosts, and exploding zombies really bumping the value of magic wielders, I feel that the moderncide V2 may benefit from similar enemy types, perhaps bulletproof vests, exploding zombies TBH I have yet to play it as I like to paint up my Core Box before getting it to the table.
We're leaning very similarly. While I absolutely plan on keeping all the extra variety from the expansions, the actual core box of green horde we're not sure if we're keeping yet.
This was great! We current have ZBP with the wolves expansion. What other content would you recommend to add? Also, I wasn’t part of the KS campaign so I don’t have any special zombies or miniatures. Any ones standout to you?
I think zombicide 2.0 now has many varieties. Toxic, Berserkers, Skinners, Seekers, Dogs, and Crows. But maybe this video is uploaded before those varieties came

Hey Alex, as someone who has recently got into Black Plague (due in no small part to your enthusiasm) I'm wondering, generally, what the makeup of your equipment and spawn decks look like. Do you like to keep BP and GH mostly separate? Do you like to integrate a certain number of extra zombie types? Just asking because if you were to just slam all the Fantasy Zombicide stuff together you'd have a bloated tower of cards lol.
2nd Edition is compatible with all previous Modern ones. So if you miss Zombie variaty, you definitely should look into the old Modern with the Berserkers, Toxic etc. There are plenty!
I picked up a copy of zombicide 2nd edition off of ebay and I love it! and I have black plague as well. and im waiting on western zombicide.....I blame you Alex. lol
Have you tried adding some of the rule improvements to Black Plague from 2E? The night and day cycle is easy to implement and it's GREAT. An issue that hurts Black Plague is a lot of the extra cards in the item deck. 2E streamlines this and keeps it light while Black Plague added to it, making it more robust, sure, but also making it much harder to find Dragon Bile and a Torch. This lead to turtling up, searching until you got what you needed and then bulldozing through. 2E makes this feel so much faster and a non-issue. What's your take on that?
That's a great point, one that I probably should have made. I do like the fact that it's a single card you need to find instead of a combination. That's also an easy house rule by just getting rid of the bile and requiring only the torch.
thanks for the video😁 I love zombicide franchise so much Especially Invader/dark side most love mold, oxygen and remote control bots/turrets, even class system of invader series though👍
Great comparison, I have yet to play a Zombicide game even though I own the 2nd edition of modern. From what I've seen I love everything about this franchise, but the more I look at Black Plague, Green Horde, etc. the more I lose interest in playing the modern version. It just doesn't seem to appeal to me anymore, from the artwork on the box to the game itself. I'm thinking about selling it and getting BP, for starters. If you find the time please let me know if I'm on the seemingly right track 😄.

I combine black plague, and green horde regularly and its a blast. It's literally the only game my wife loooooves so i own every expansion for both games
Love to hear about CDMD Season 2 I see sitting there behind you...
Oh CDMD is awesome, one of my favorite games.
Hello, The day & Night time, the break weapon thing is only in the extension , does it ?
Not sure
Zombicide was my entry to hobbyist games! I’ll always have a soft spot for it. Thanks for the content! :D
I actually avoided it for a really long time...but now I'm hooked.
Me too
My first ever Boardgame I got into from Kickstarter was Zpocalypse and I had seen & heard about Zombicide when I was looking for other games to get into and told myself "I don't need another Zombie boardgame".
Can you do a Massive Darkness vs Zombicide play this not that episode ?
I like that zombiecied 2nd Edition has the plastic tray for your character and equipment cards
Yep that's nice
Since adding zombie wolves and archers my gaming group is struggling with black plague for sure, but we can still win if we're on point for every turn!
I'm curious if 2nd Edition will have a Season 2 and Season 3 like 1st Edition had.
Originally I hope so, but then they shifted to wild West... So I'm less optimistic.
@@BoardGameCo you can still buy the 1st edition expansions for marked up prices if you want the zombie variety. You’ll also need the extra 2nd edition cards that they offered during the Kickstarter.
@@tawink I belive those cards will be available at retail. But I'm not sure.
“Zombies & Companions Upgrade Kit”
Modern day (twice), Medieval Fantasy, Space, Old West, Night of the Living Dead... So what's next?
Here's some ideas, and one of these would make ridiculous amounts of money:
Zombicide: World War 2
Zombicide: Cthulhu
Zombicide: Cyberpunk
Zombicide: Dinosaurs
Zombicide: Feudal Japan
Zombicide: Pirates
Zombicide: Marvel Zombies (Cha-ching! Printing money)
They probably consider Cthulhu covered with Death May Die. I was hoping for a WW2 version myself until you brought up Marvel Zombies.
WW1 or 2 would be great, as would Feudal Japan - hopping zombies!
Dinosaurs with a Mad Science Jurassic Park angle is what I'd love next
@@chrisnelson2948 Yep this would be gold and licenced crossover to bring into Moderncide would be impressive, I am pretty sure I am not going to back another Zombicide but this could be a game changer, Ideally something that compliments what I'll choose to keep.
@@Jak0vas Feudal Japan with zombies and demons leading everything. I'd be all over that.
How does Zombicide compare to Last Night on Earth?
Southland never played last night on Earth, so I can't comment on that comparison.
@@BoardGameCo LNoE is a good zombie game. It has scenarios that feel like old zombie movie plots. And it's asynchronous gameplay. 1-2 players play the zombies, and the other players (1-4) play the townsfolk.
So I am new to zombiecide, and I am new to your videos, but I have a question about the models, are they paint ready or do they need to be primed before painting?
@Worst_gamer_ever - I have several versions of Zombicide and would recommend priming the models before painting.
Which expansions would you recommend for black plague?
This is exactly the video I needed since i was thinking if I should invest in new edition or start with Black Plague. Thank you very much!
For me Black Plague is still king.
@@BoardGameCo should I wait for Black Plague second edition then?
It could be years before a next or new black plague/fantasy zombicide. I would get it now if it's the right theme and mechanics for you.
I would say that the most relevant factor to decide upon the 2 is wich theme you like the most for zombies. As gameplay wise both have slight advantages or disvantages upon the other, but nothing big enough to say that one is clearly better then the other.
what's the best expansion for zombicide black plague core box ?
But you have the updated cards to use all of the old Zombie Type expansions (dogs, crows, toxic and so on....). So tons of variety there....
Hmm, I wonder how 2e shapes up now.
Lots of people like it, for us I like parts of it but it's too easy even when trying to make it harder.
Are your Kallax shelves 4 tier or it that 5 tier with a weird forced perspective?
4 tier behind me, 5 tier to the right.
Is vanilla Zombicide much different from Black Plague and 2nd Ed.? Completely new to Zombicide
Wow you guys have really fantastic chemistry on screen
Also, I'm curious. How many games/sessions of Zombicide do you play in a month or just overall?
Depends on the month...comes in waves but I'd say likely averaging 2-3 a month.
@@BoardGameCo That's a pretty solid amount given all the games you cover and play!
As a father of three girls, I enjoy these videos most! My oldest is slowly falling in love with the hobby, right now her favorite game is Hot Zone.
Nice! I need to play that one.
Zombicide Black Plague is also cross compatible with Massive Darkness 1 + 2 (and vice versa) So 4 full kickstarters plus extras
To be fair, I was comparing all second edition versus all black plague. It wasn't base game versus all black plague.
@@BoardGameCo Fair enough, I didn't know there more than like 1 expansion out at the time this video was made. My bad.
They said Massive Darkness 2 was built as campaign first then developed the 1 off scenerios. Its a ton of plastic coming and I wanna keep!
@@BoardGameCo Alex after a lot of consideration i ended buying Black Plague and you nailed sir, the setting and gameplay are superb, now I'm looking for some expansion (preference list in Amazon for their nice shipping to my country) can you point me some must have? (I'm planning going all in, but in a slow pace 2 to 3 month between expansion). Thanks in advance.
Alright I'm at 1:07 and I'm going to make a prediction that Alex let's his love of the theme for black plague win out over everything else. I'm hoping to hear about game changes and which system is better etc also so let us see... hopefully Shira can keep this thing on the rails.
Haha 4:42 Cost doesn't matter if you have Alex as a friend. Alex can we be friends? :)
7:00 instead of CMON making something to say the differences in editions how about something that can pull older editions (like black plague) forward to the new rules?
11:30 Have you watched Bruce Campbell vs Army of Darkness? You can have cars in medieval times...
Okay so I have watched several videos where Alex has said that he's keeping Black Plague and will probably get rid of Invader and Second Edition. Coming into this video with that knowledge I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised by how neutral the discussion remained.
Good call :) Theme is definitely a draw but it's more about the difficulty and zombie variety.
Shira I need to borrow you for a little bit to play my zombicide collection!!! I like your style!!! Game on.
lol good luck :)
This is EXACTLY the video that I wanted. I'm stupid and didn't back 2nd edition and I'm still kicking myself. I really want to know if it's worth getting when I already have Invader and Black Plague. Thank you Alex and Shira!
I would say it's only worth it if you really prefer the modern theme for zombies (as I do), or if you REALLY love zombicide and want to play the campaigns. Other wise, it's only slighly better then medieval at best
@@OrdemDoGraveto I think both of those apply to me! I think I'm going to wait until Witcher KS starts to see the price and then maybe go with @Ess Dee link above. Thanks so much to the both of you!
If and when I buy my first Zombicide game, it will be Black Plague because of the theme :)
A solid choice :)
They pick solid themes all around.
I'd like to see a medieval Japan one tbh.
Thx!
1st edition got that variety, they havent release the reworked expansions for 2nd ed
Yep, if they give me expansions we can talk :)
@@BoardGameCo an optional buy was the upgrade kit that allows all of the old zombies from first edition to be used to add variety
I feel the same way. I already have fantasy based games and I prefer this to be a zombie apocalypse in my own time.
ONLY have played Black Plague. I bought 2.0 blindly this week. And now this video pops up!
Serendipity!
:)
I have green horde technically i can use my green horde and play it as black plague. All i have to do is use the black plague rules and get the BP extra tile set. And not use the trebuche.
Well that's reasonable :) For me the lack of correct minis would bother me :D
Black Plague is pretty much unobtainable on Polish market whereas Green Horde is very common and not that expensive. Are there any huge advantages of Black over Green that make the latter not worth it?
Wait, do you have the TMNT survivors? :D
I do, but those are leaving right away.
@@BoardGameCo Why is that?
I'm disapointed that they have the ID cards for the second edition, but not their iconic weapons with the second edition back =/
I like Shira!
I wish I had someone that passionate about the games I like in my life haha
You guys definitely have to make more videos together :)
She's great :-)
Yes I am :)
If you have the upgrade pack from first edition you get the skinners, toxic, beserker, vip, seekers, and lost zombiviors, crowz and dogz.
It makes you wish you had first edition stuff
A lot of verity will come if you go after the first edition boxes toxic city mall, angry neibors, season 2 prison outbreak and season 3 rue morgue add a lot of content
Very true. It's hard to compare these apples to apples without adding in all the 1st edition expansions. I hope they reprint/update the first edition expansions to go along with second edition.
@@maxdisciple1 We are planning on just using black cubes to say rooms that are dark on the old boards
What about Zombicide 2nd edition Travel? Got that also? Would love to hear your thoughts on that 🤓
I passed on that...if I'm doing Zombicide, I'm doing it full size :)
Hey, I also make Black Plague harder! I haven't played any of the other Zombicide games, but I love that one.
Their houses foundation is built upon Zombicide board games!
It will eventually.
I think CMON needs to add a cross-over pack for all themes to be used together.
Oh man, that would sell so well :)
Zombicide Dimensions. Your welcome.
They require a update kit. It was available at the KS, but I don't know if they will be at retail. If they aren't, then that's a relevant point.
Love the geeking out to that giant dragon.
Lol yep :)
When I saw Hate in the background I immediately got sad because there is no way of buying it anymore without selling at least 1 kidney.
Yeah, as a kickstarter exclusive game the aftermarket on it is tough.
@@BoardGameCo Trying to collect all the Eric Lang games but sheesh.
At least you can now get it at Miniature Market, instead of secondary market prices.
@@edwinbiggs8819 Not in Germany sadly. I just checked MM (they have a really good price for hate) - but shipping is about 60USD and VAT comes on top of that.
@@RobOngrui That does suck.
I like the old zombicide 1st edition art better than 2nd edition. I use 1:43 cars I bought.
I wanna come for a games night!
:)
I hope to have a review and gameplay soon.
Archers are great, as is the dragon expansion.
So will there be a Black Plague 2nd edition?
I highly doubt it sadly.
I think zombicide 2.0 now has many varieties. Toxic, Berserkers, Skinners, Seekers, Dogs, and Crows. But maybe this video is uploaded before those varieties came
The variety comes from the upgrade kit.. you can bring the zombies from 1st edition to second edition
I know I missed something along the way but Shira is your sister, isn't she? I figure that red hair is probably not a coincidence. She's awesomely fun and I love watching her and Rina interact together, so great!!
Nope, just family friend :) That we happen to look not dissimilar.
I feel relieved reading this.
I looked at the similarity and thought: "Is Shira Alex's daughter? He doesn't look old enough... surely..."
I thought I had pieced all the relationships together, and I'm glad to have it confirmed!
I love the energi you have
Thanks :)
Wild west is such a good zombicide 🥰 would love more zombie variation for 2nd edition
It's great :)
Me encanta el tema de Black Plague, sin embargo considero mejor 2nd Edition, ya que con las cartas de actualización pues obtienes una variedad muy grande en cuanto a zombies e incluso personajes jugables de toda la 1st Edition.
And between balck plague vs green horde? Which one would be your pick? Thanks for your great videos!!
2nd Edition is compatible with all previous Modern ones. So if you miss Zombie variaty, you definitely should look into the old Modern with the Berserkers, Toxic etc. There are plenty!
Agreed, sadly the miniatures would look out of place.
@@BoardGameCo The player miniatures look a little off, but the Zombies are fine I think.
Hopefully there will be a new standalone expansion for second edition to help variety.
Given how quickly they moved on to wild West, I'm sadly skeptical that this will be supported.
Would be cool if we got a Zoo and Mall Expansion but CMON moves very fast
Man, I was just today thinking if I should buy 2nd edition looking at a little bit of dust on my Black Plague .......... ;)
Agreed 100% on metal dice. They sound cool, literally and figuratively, but they are wholly impractical.
Yep, although dice trays can help.
I picked up a copy of zombicide 2nd edition off of ebay and I love it! and I have black plague as well. and im waiting on western zombicide.....I blame you Alex. lol
You should absolutely blame me.
Still waiting for pirate zombicide. I'll be all over that. 😆
Absolutely :)
I plan on buying Zombicide as my girlfriend loves smashing brains in.
It's a blast :)
No overlapping artists between Black Plague and Second Edition.
Thanks!
Guitar earrings look cool :)
Phew I was rooting for Black Plague
Right now it's not even close. I like second edition, but it needs more.
@@BoardGameCo It's more about the size of the decks if you add all the expansions for BP + GH, that make the dragon bile cards way to scarce.
thanks for the video😁
I love zombicide franchise so much
Especially Invader/dark side most
love mold, oxygen and remote control bots/turrets, even class system of invader series though👍
I need to give Invader more tries...I was so excited about it initially.
If you find the time please let me know if I'm on the seemingly right track 😄.
fun format.
Thanks :-) we try to do one or two of these a month
