I recently got into board games because I stumbled across Zombicide. Have since introduced it to the lads at work and they are constantly asking to have a drinks and game night 🤙🏻
That's how i got exposed to modern board games as well. Looks like zombicide is a great gateway game to videogame players also.
My wife was a big fan of Walking Dead, both the show and the comics, so she naturally leaned towards the original Zombicide. So we went all in and got all the seasons and all the expansions over time. We now keep all of the minis and materials in a giant tackle box.
And let me tell you, once you combine all of the equipment, all of the Zombies, all of the abominations, the dogs, the crows, the VIPs, and play where Survivors can't die, you can end up with some very hairy situations where you need strategy and can't go in guns blazing. We have stayed up all night some nights going through some of the scenarios.
Always had a love for board games. Praying weekly for a zombie apocalypse(usually on monday mornings).
How have I never heard of this... I'm in... hooked and subscribed!

Thank you for this video! I am still on the fence about Marvel Zombies. One of my biggest problems choosing is that I backed Undead Or Alive, getting almost everything. That is my first zombicide game, and I didn't know enough about the differet game systems to make a decision about Marvel Zombies. I couldn't find what you just shared anywhere! So this was incredibly helpful! For me, the deciding factor is probably going to be the leveling up systems. Leveling up and making epic attacks like in cthulhu DMD is what I am looking for. Between Undead or Alive, U or A Gears and Guns, Marvel Zombies, and MZ X-Men resistance, the Marvel Zombies Core is the game system I find least interesting. Thanks again for all of the helpful info!
My buddy and I just played our first board game with miniatures and it was zombicide invader. We had so much fun. Needless to say I have ordered alot of other zombicide stuff from Amazon. We haven't played them yet but we are both hooked on the coop dungeon crawl type games. I ordered a few others as well. Dark Souls and late pledged on Chronicles of drunagor. Can't wait to play them all. I like your videos btw. You are my go to for game info.

This definitely was helpful. As an "early adopter" of the original classic Zombicide, I was then lost with all the editions and expansions that came after. I always guessed they were "more of the same" with a theme tacked on... until I played a game of Black Plague a few days ago. The theme was appealing, but also the improved components and the new rules. And it was fun! But then I saw the countless additions and extra boxes there are for Zombicide and panicked. This video cleared things up: I'm buying Black Plague (OOP, but found a new copy in my country) and Wulfsburg, which seem to be very well regarded editions, and then I'll mix and match whatever rule I enjoy from other editions. Thanks for an informative video!
The undeaed or alive noise token thing is a huge upgrade. In all my zombicide play, I can count on part of one hand how often noise actually ever came into play. I get the concept, but it's so rare that it matters. The one token is so much easier to manage for the handful of times where it makes any difference.
I just got into playing. Got Black Plague and the noise tokens it's a mess. I always keep it in mind but don't really use them. Usually line of sight or just there being more survivors together in one zone over rules it. I haven't tried noise baiting with zombies. Which technically is a thing you can do
Just picked up zombicide 2cd edition Saturday the 17th of December 2022! Great game so glad it can be played solo I’ve only played the fist mission two tile learn to play scenario & one other mission that was 4 tiles! So glad I picked it up!
I started with 2nd Edition since i just found the game system. I've enjoyed playing 2nd edition so far, I have gotten my hands on a copy Black Plague and Green Horde after some digging, and can't wait to get them to try them. Being a Zombie survival nerd, all these games appeal to me, and I am looking to try them all. Thanks for the great insight.
Wow, what a history lesson and summary. This has been really helpful, thank you! I have BP w/ wolves and archers and like it a lot. It could use some variety though, so I’ll look in to Green Horde. How do they mix? When playing BP, do I just use the zombies from GH along with the ones in BP?
You can mix them if you want. The heroes are 100% compatible, the zombies only if you want them to.

"Any survivor dying ends the game" is a great mechanic. Probably one my favorites. Missions that allow death are usually easily exploited by having sacrifices. I have a lot of game sessions where our group wins a mission and everyone's just happy even though more than half died, they made dying a strategy for every game, it's so weird and unrealistic. Also, if someone dies early that person has to wait for a long time for the next game since we play 1:1 player:survivor.
Explain how it’s more realistic by the game ending if one character dies? The other five just shrugged and said ok, Fred is dead so we will just give up! One person sacrificing themselves to save the majority is far more ‘realistic’. Here’s an example, first day of WWII, the first allied soldier gets killed…..all the rest surrender. Makes zero sense and is totally unrealistic. We shall have to agree to disagree lol but no disrespect intended, all said tongue in cheek.
I am still on the fence about Marvel Zombies although I am pretty sure I will at least get a base pledge for the SG.
Main reason is that I have C:DMD and what I like is that edge of getting more powerful while getting closer to going insane and straight losing.
In Marvel Zombies, outside of the level up abilities you can be as powerful as possible from pretty much the start and I don't know if that makes for compelling gameplay.
I get why since a tough hero can just turn up straight away.
Also new hydra exp so far seems like the most game changing box with the new hydra shooter.
Will be waiting for Zombicide Fantasy 3, I hope they could include all the new good stuff that was implemented in the new zombicide to the fantasy zombicide. Stuff like classes, closing doors, horses, tower defence and campaign

Thanks for the video summary Alex. Got into Black Plague a little while ago and even back Undead or Alive due to the wonderful western theme. Still on the fence for Marvel Zombies, mainly due to price point and timing.

Absolutely!
There is no difference in the splitting rules between Black Plague and Green Horde. In both, you split as evenly as poosible, and add one extra zombie on odd numbers. The difference is that in BP splitting is relatively rare, as the map layout tend to provide very closed avenues, with one or maybe two corridors for the zombies to follow. Hence, there will be one way that is shorter most of the time. Green Horde changed all of that with more open maps, where on a completely open map a group of zombies might split several times, resulting in a lot of fiddlyness and possibly a lot of extra added zombies. A lot of players thought splitting no longer worked in Green Horde due to the extra work and added random non-thematic difficulty, so common house rules are players choose the odd zombie or flip a coin...
Bought 2nd edition for xmas, for my son (11) and me. Good to know that it seems not to difficult, we both are newbes... I like the characters, kids and so on, so its very modern looking and interessting for the youth... The miniatures are great.. Thanks for the fast spoken overview, Greetings from Germany 👍😎😅
Zombicide has always been one of those games I felt I just needed a little bit more of a reason to dive in. The Thundercats coming to Black Plague sealed the deal for me. I was able to get BP, Wulfsburg, and the Thundercats at retail price but I had to pay Ebay prices for Deadeye, Bosses, and 3D doors. Although I would have saved a lot of money, I probably wouldn't have gotten as excited if the Thundercats came to Invaders lol I'm glad it came to BP and I can't wait to check out all the quests.
Super excited about the marvel zombies too! I've never back Cmon games before, currently i'm in for the resistance pledge + the FF and hydra expansion. Not going to get GOTG expansion at the moment because gut feeling tells me that expansion is not fully polished as it should be, likewise for galatcus expansion. Since you have played it before, I have a question, does the characters here feel, to some extent, representative of the marel comic characters? Like in terms the marvel character's abilities and power level? Do you actually feel like you are using that marvel character? Or does the characters abilities here feel generic with little varition between each other? Thank alot in advance for sharing your thoughts :)

Alex, thank you for the video. My current favorite is Black Plague. I have an all in order for Undead or Alive that I am waiting for delivery. I almost wish I could change Undead or Alive in for Marvel Zombies. I so want to go all in for Marvel Zombies but it just may be to expensive to get it all so considering on buying Zombie base and Heroic base and hope my local store stocks the rest.

That's a hard question. In general Death May Die...but the shiny aspect of Marvel Zombies has me on the fence.

Black Plague is amazing, my friends and I love it and it’s tons of fun. Favorite survivors are Milo if I wanna go mage, and Garuk if I feel like getting into melee. 💯

Zombicide black plague was my very first tabletop game waaayyy back in 2016. Now, with more then 100 games under my belt, it still is one of my favorite games. Definetly not perfect. Many people dont like zombicide and, for the most part, for fair reasons. But, oh man... So many great memories and fun I already had with it...

Can anyone tell me if you get all stretch goals by backing at the base level? It isn't clear on the campaign if you get every mini on the base pledge as it only says "all applicable rewards". Would zombie wolverine for example be an applicable reward for the base pledge, or do you only get him if you go for the higher level pledge with the xmen core game?
Yes, the base pledge gets you the ‘strecth goal box’ as well

In undead or alive I don’t see any where in the rule book where it says your supposed to use a posse of 4, and actually the setup in the rule book the first paragraph says “usually features 6 survivors “

Night of the Living Dead spoke to me. My local game store had it on sale for $17 and that was reason enough! Don't own any other zombicide. Don't think I will. The value I got from my game is unmatchable
Anecdotal, may not be a thing but until 2 years ago I owned all of massive darkness and Zombicide medieval editions addons and exclusives and had never played the game. Exclusively used the minis for Dungeons and Dragons. Like the game now too but I wonder if usefulness of minis added to popularity.

I have just purchased my first Zombicide and I chose Green Horde because I am a sucker for Orcs and Goblins. I was a little concerned with your reservations about hedges and spike barriers, I am hoping it adds some obstacles to corral the zombies with? If I enjoy the game system do you recommend I buy more content for Green Horde or should I add the Black Plague base game box? Thanks for your time and expertise, Garry. p.s. Are there rules to adapt the zombie threat to allow for 2, 3 or 4 players each playing a single survivor?

This video made me feel better about BP. I have every mainline Z game, and over the last few years my group has gone through Moderncide and all its expansions and become what we thought were tactical experts. We just started Z:BP and lost our first 4 games of medium scenarios. So hearing you say you lose a majority of the games in Fantacides makes me breathe a little sigh of relief, it isn't just us lol. That said, we finally won one when we tried an easy scenario. Our arrogance has hurt us the most :P
my issue is that BP is only challenging if you have archers and wolvez, otherwise it's too easy for my gaming groups
@@Janisurai Maybe we are doing something wrong then. But we do seem to keep pulling all 8 necromancer cards in the first like 3 turns or something, no matter how much we shuffle, so that hasn't helped.
@@seanbester1465 One of my groups is very analytical, so we have 'best practices' for example, never open a door if it's your last action, so maybe that's why, in my other group it's more about the experience and role playing and we die more often there! :-D
I have a lot of the Zombicides and I have found Black Plague/Green Horde to be the most 'broken' out of the box experience. Yes it is many degrees far more challenging than the other Zombicide games, but at the same time we have won games with also complete cheese solely based upon the cards we drew.
The zombie deck and abominations are wild. You really have to regulate your abomination cards. I would suggest adjusting the deck to only feature a few abominations or take a page from 2nd Edition, and add 'Abomination' generic cards, that you then draw an abomination from the abomination deck of cards. This ratio of abomination cards to the relative zombie deck size and tweaking abominations that appear can help regulate the game.
Necromancers is another issue. Necromancers are designed to push the team outside their comfort zones, something other Zombicide games tend not to do. A major problem for them being applying older building spawning rules (flipping a zombie card for each dark room revealed when breaching ), and then dealing with randomly spawning a Necromancer on the opposite side of the map where they might have an incredibly easy getaway. Again, this is a deck tuning item. I do think the game gives more Necromancer cards than should be played with out of the box. You may either enjoy the difficulty or tune it down by removing necromancer cards to reduce their frequency.
Lastly, the entire equipment deck. This part I found the most frustrating. Weapons in my group's play experience are incredibly underpowered, but spells are in general incredibly overpowered. The vast majority of melee weapons are virtually worthless. Most only able to deal 1 damage, and restrict them to be used by characters who can deal additional damage. If you feel this is flavorful or feels periodic accurate and do not mind the character restrictions then by all means. However, you may wish to perform a large sweeping overhaul of the weapons, in particular the melee weapons, either removing a vast majority of them from the deck, or tuning some of the cards to have higher damage so they are more useful. The very fact that it is so hard to find cards in general just to be able to manage fatties, much less abominations, makes the gameplay very different from other zombicides, but again, not a great out of the box experience.
Going back to spells, they're all basically overpowered. Especially ones like Repulse. One of the few out of the box/difficulty overtuned games my playgroup was able to win was because we happened to find a Repulse spell, and for the rest of the game, we did not engage with any zombies in combat. We generated noise to funnel the horde through specific paths, while all other players completed objectives around the map, as our Repulse player just kept knocking back the horde onto a single space and preventing them from advancing on us.
Essentially, what we found was that Black Plague could be a good game, but to tune it to an enjoyable level for my group was not worth the effort that anyone wanted to put in. That said, because it has the highest possible difficulty cap out of the box, it's one of the few games you can adjust down to match your group's enjoyment level, while having a lot of head room to grow when you are looking for a challenge. Because my group tends to enjoy RP'ing as the characters they select or, have preferences to how they play, BP/GH breaks too much of their immersion in the game when they continue to dig for garbage swords as loot, or are forced to play the game too efficiently/aren't given the option to risk/reward for a greedy move and they have to just optimize combat.
@@TemjinZero Great take, thanks! We've had 7 plays so far, I think we will likely add the expansion in on our next play, and will move to Green Horde shortly after. I still think it's a pretty great game overall, but you have explained its issues I've had with it pretty concisely.
I went all in on the original kickstarter, but didnt buy anything until NotLD released (which I adore). I also recently orders Zombicide Chronicles RPG, which I intend to play solo with an oracle using the minis and boards. As a wargamer since the early 70s, I classify Zombicide as a very light wargame. We've been using the term Beer and Pretzels since the early 80s - its not a negative. Its just the class of games you pull out when you dont feel like playing Drang Nach Osten.
I started with Invader and then bought Black Plague and Green Horde. These will always stay in my collection as they are games that I am always happy to play. I backed out of Undead or Alive and have zero interest in Marvel Zombicide or anything else Marvel related. I was a Marvel fan dating back to the late 60s but the overkill of Marvel has killed this for me. And I can think of much better ways of spending £500.
I have everything Zombicide since Black Plague andI know that Marvel Zombies and Black Plague will be my go to’s, but just can’t bring myself to part with any of the other versions. Invader is the closest to going, but it’s Zombicide in space…
Personal opinions and all, but Invaders is my favorite thematically. Aliens, Warhammer and other SciFi Horror inspirations are just too good for me. It also has my favorite Abomination designs, I enjoyed Black Ops having a unstoppable, unkillable threat you have threatening you and it becomes a race against time.
I guess it helps that Invaders was my first Zombicide as well as my first CMON game I backed (HATE I late Pledged to at the same time) but I've since Invader's project gotten 2nd Edition, late Pledged Undead or Alive (initially didn't want it but then decided I liked the Western theme enough to get base pledge (didn't like the expansion so passed on it) and have a pledge for Marvel Zombies that I may go all-in for.

the beauty of invader is its models... and the ability to use them in game systems like strargrave. five parsecs etc..black plague was great.but i felt they could have done so much more with the necromancers...marvel is a good set. but havent bothered with white death.just think its not enough going for it.
Zombicide 2nd edition I only use 4 survivors even though it says 6 because if you use 4 it's much more harder

I got in late, I backed Invaders, Modern 2nd and Dead or alive .. didnt marvel because I ad 3 versions... and apparently I picked wrong haha, I guess ll sell Invader, and I would really like to get Black Plague, they should really do reprint Kickstarters that they Update components and add more to.

I really wish black plague was still in print
I'm 100% new to this haven't got anything yet so I took a glance at the marvel one as of last night it was like 9,830,000 funded... and still head a nearly additional 1,000 dollar stretch goal... highway robbery plain and simple. Even a 2,000 point warhammer army costs less than that stretch goal...
Skipped on Marvel Zombies... don't want to support their FOMO (Iron Man, Hulk, ... never coming to retail) and paywall (hero mode which most people most probably like to play more than as a zombie only at higher pledge level) stunts.
But I misunderstood the title... I really thought about Zombicide crossover with Vlaada Chvátil's "Through the Ages" 😀

Invader is often underrated...and Alex made a lot of mistakes which made it way easier. Imho Invader or 2nd are best for players new to this. Undead or Alive is awesome but can be brutal
Perhaps...but I've played a lot of the Zombicides and the others I win and lose so unless I'm exclusively managing to make the same mistakes with invader and not the rest...I still think it's too easy

My problem with these games is the Zombie theme doesn't interest me as much as others. I am sure any of these I would enjoy however I feel that their are many other games that are better and have themes that I like. I think the only time I would back a Zombicide game would be if they made a Pirate themed version, that just seems really cool to me.
So are the super heroes in marvel zombies basically specialized abominations? I played 2 ND edition for my first zombicide play and I'm trying to understand how it translates
There are basically two modes of playing. The default mode is the Zombie mode where you are playing the marvel heroes as zombies and fighting the living hero (abomination level) and shield agents (zombies replacement). The other mode is the Hero Mode where as you expect is the reverse of it where you play as the living hero and the zombie heroes are the abomination.
Note: you need to get the x-men expansion for the Hero Mode

@@jaredschulz3141 No probs, IMO back the second level the one with the base and the xmen box that should be the best bang for your bucks as you will get the two modes of playing plus the massive ‘strecth goal’ box 👍🏼

Didn't expect to see Marvel in this series but why am i surprised.. Playing as zombie superheroes also feels weird to me, doesn't feel engaging on paper.
I finally decided to get one into my collection but had huge issues deciding which one to get. I was already set on BP because it seems to be the most balanced and i like medieval fantasy but ended up getting 2nd edt because the theme is the most palatable for an average gamer. Also felt like a natural starting point to the series. Western is the only one I'm put off by the theme, so was tossing between three options for quite a while, Invader being the third
I don't think so because I played Undead or Alive when it first came out and didn't feel as strongly. Same with Invader and 2ndd edition. Meaning new hasn't always meant better in Zombicide for me.
Where does Zombicide go from here? What other IP could work/compete against Marvel? AVP maybe! Predators Vs Aliens Vs Marines.
Yes, I am worried that it will constantly be an IP thing...which I guess I don't mind as long as they are good.

I'm still waiting for "Zombicide: Noir" (I mean with gangsters and detectives in 40's or 50's America).
I do own "Black Plague" and all the expansions but if they made a Noir-themed version... I'd also buy everything.
Black plague is currently my only Zombicide and I'm backing marvel zombies, looks like I have good taste.

Hm, in a way it’s a dungeon crawler. One of my favorite games of all time is descent and descent 2nd edition!
Have you played them? And how would you compare them to zombicide (maybe the coop version of descent 2nd edition with the app instead of the pvp mode)
I used to believe zombicide would just be a watered down version of that so I was never interested…
Yeah one of my things about Black Plague is you can toy around with it quite a lot to make it more dungeon crawly
Funny that you say you liked black plague the most because it's harder, because as a player of the originais I always disliked black plague because it made the game too easy! Armor is a concept I hate to this day, because it makes survivors WAY too resilient, and on top of that you increas the amount of damage survivors can take, from 2 to 3.
If you consider just the base games, second edition has the SAME amount of zombie types then Black Plague, except for the necromancer. If you consider the add-ons for Black Plague, then you should also consider the add-ons for Second Edition, the old seasons:
Prison outbreak with berserkers
Toxic mall with toxics
Rue morgue with skinners
Angry Neighbour with seekers
zombie dogz and zombie crowz.
Then I think you end up with more or less the same amount as the medieval games (Black Plague + Green Horde + expansions).

Zombicide became progressivly easier with each new interation.
(assuming you weren't playing with the zumbivors rule).
My only concern is how difficult is the marvel zombicide..... So what do you think? Is this more challenging and difficult than the others???

I'm confused, just checked the KS pages for Marvel and Western and they say 1-6 players
I could be wrong, but I believe all in theory have a variety of player counts in the scenarios but generally have a specific preset number.
I read somewhere, they have scenarios for 4 and 6 characters, it says you can play it with less but it will be more difficult
Any co-op game can be played 1-X, you just have to play whatever the character count is.

Undead or Alive has characters. When you played on TTS 2 people controlled 2 characters...
It had 4 I believe, only one person controlled two and there were 3 players

As a big Zombicide fan passing on Marvel Zombies. I am not interested in playing zombies and just want the hero mode but not willing to pay that much money. Don't like the idea where certain Marvel heroes are exclusive also. So I might pick up in retail the hero version and one expansion because always a fan of Black Widow. Now my favorite.. Black Plague/Green Horde is favorite though the original Zombicide with expansions and some of the variant spawn rules is very close. I just love the feel of those original characters and well it was one the games that got me back into collecting board games. 3rd.. don't know yet till I play the Western one but I did not like Invader nor the Night of the Living Dead ones. I hope CMON will release some of the heroes that have exclusive tags at least in some form in retail. That just stinks I have to back to get certain heroes as exclusives and once more hate I can't just buy the hero mode core box.
I think the most frustrating thing about the campaign is that we can't back the X-Men hero pledge alone. It is like there is a $130 "core box" paywall around it. Secondly, the retail version has waayy too few heroes for the game to really work I think. The variability of heroes is what makes this game great and the 8 or whatever included is not enough. I think the game will do poorly at retail with so few heroes and the only one that will have some success at retail will be X-men.

Where (if it does) would Death May Die fit into this discussion. I had gotten CDMD because I thought it would scratch my itch for Zombicide. Similar to zombicide, heroes have a leveling system and the game turns get more cinematic as the game progresses. It’s also very much a “run around and chuck lots of dice” game.
Maybe it’s unfair to compare, but I seems a very parallel system in many ways.
And maybe it’s a moot point as I have subsequently backed Undead or Alive and am backing Marvel Zombies.

@@johncorrigan268 not yet. I’ve seen it on Dice Tower and would be interested in trying it, but no one in my gaming circle owns it and right now Marvel Zombies is already putting a big dent in my gaming budget.
Marvel Zombies will be the first CMON game I buy. I find myself always backing out at the last second, mostly due to an irrational hatred of all the meme characters CMON tends to stuff into their campaigns. Meme characters being the references to pop culture or fiction. I hate that. It cheapens the experience for me. Thankfully, with the Marvel IP, they are unable to do this (and chase me away from the campaign). I’m also a Marvel fan and the system seems solid. Most likely going all-in with extra dice. Just give me everything.
I did the same. Was all in on the Western Zombicide but the Ruth Bader Ginsburg fig was the nail in the coffin for me.
In another world, I would have gone all in on this. But three reasons kept me away from this campaign.
My only owned ZOMBICIDE (BLACK PLAGUE/GREEN HORDE) has only been played solo so far (I got hold of it as the Pandemic kicked off).
I have MARVEL UNITED X-MEN on its way and only just have enough room to put all the content I went for.
The cost to ship this campaign in any form to the UK is more than I can swallow. MARVEL UNITED X-MEN caught me off guard with its post campaign costs (it was my first CMON project) and I can't justify that much a second time.
But, as a Marvel fan, I hope to play, and maybe get a retail copy down the line. Will have to see how that all pans out.
I wish they would have only done just marvel zombies and not have the hero mode. That would have cut down on half the plastic and cost.. then in a year after it’s been delivered have another Kickstarter with the X-men hero mode. The Fomo is real and it’s Too Expensive !!

Lol yep. That said, I knew we'd have some shooters...they already confirmed that in comments, but there's a difference between one variety vs the amount we've gotten in the past.
All I wanted is Zombicide Black Plague and maybe Zombicide Invader ... but all I got is Western Zombicide and random Marvel product for millionaires. :(
I would try green Horde or black plague if I could get my hands on a Kickstarter Version of the games....but for my dose of miniature porn I will stick to horizon zero dawn and darkest dungeon
