I totally agree, I can count myself as a reference. In 2015 I established a software company and attempted to get custom software projects. I had a few, but it became extremely difficult to get new clients later on. Because they asked me my references and most of the time I didn't have anything to show in their niche. For example, I was able to show some database projects, some desktop programs but they asked for mobile apps and none of my references became sufficient to convince them. What you said is 101% true, "everyone wants an expert"! No one cares about mediocre people, everyone wants the best within their budget. Then I switched to game programming and it became a milestone in my business. Then I kept nieching down, I realized that even game programming has its niches inside. That became another milestone. It took years for me to realize this, but my business sky rocketed after I did it.
