I Live in Abu Dhabi, The United Arab emirates, and my father works in Dubai (so a 2 hour drive there everyday). During Covid, there were actually physical borders between the two emirates, because they had different Covid restrictions, so you needed a negative Covid test report to enter Abu Dhabi. It meant that my dad needed to take a covid test every 2 days in order to come back home. Each emirate even has their own brand of airline. Etihad for Abu Dhabi and Emirates for Dubai. Andrew, You're a mad genius.

Puerto Rico is another interesting one. They have their own Olympic team despite being American citizens, and a lot of people mistakenly label it as a country. Many Americans are shocked when they realize they can go there without a passport. Being in Old San Juan also feels extremely European and it’s trippy seeing everything conducted in Spanish despite being on U.S. soil.

@@zebimicio5204 The Taiwan situation is a bit odd. There was a war between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Republic of China (ROC). PRC won, and took the entire mainland and basically forced the ROC to the island of Taiwan. ROC still lay claim to the entirety of China, and will not make a compromise. That's why little people recognise "Taiwan", as it lays claim to the entire island you must support that as well, and ignore PRC's legitimate claim.
Taiwan is sort of recognised as its own country at this point, despite what the governments of both Chinas want to believe.

1:41 This isn't exactly an accurate map of the UAE. The islands to the north of Abu Dhabi (Dalma, Sir Baniyas, and Abu Al Abyad) belongs to Abu Dhabi and should be yellow, and the Dubai exclave of Hatta to the south of Ras al-Khaimah isn't even the same color as Dubai. Heck, there should be a triangular point pointing towards the west next to Hatta because it's more than just an exclave of Dubai, the place next to it (Masfout) is an exclave of Ajman.
And "je ne sais pas" means "I don't know" so you being like "What did I just say?" is actually quite fitting.

I think an interesting point that makes US (or Switzerland or Brazil, etc.) states not countries is that, despite having different laws, taxes, police, the states don’t own the citizens, only the federation does. So if you don’t like Alabama laws you are free to move to Alaska and you’ll then live by Alaskan laws. You’ll vote in Alaska, you’ll pay taxes to Alaska, effective immediately, and Alabama cannot hold you back, nor can Alaska reject you

i will say the "republics in a trench coat" narrative seems to lessen with time. I'm 21 and grew up in the states and it mostly just feels like a single country rather than a collection of states. I'm sure it felt more that way at the beginning of the 20th century but nowadays the divides between states are razor thin and most big issues exist across all lines and we don't think on a state-by-state basis unless we're specifically talking about local elections or local issues. (and not enough americans even pay attention to non-federal elections)
