Mini rock crusher with NEW open feed tube design

    In this video I try out a new design twist on the Mighty Mill feed tube. After numerous requests, I decided to build an open feed tube model, with removeable lid. I only crush a handful of rocks in this video, but it gives a good view of how much of the dust stays contained in the mill while crushing. I feel comfortable saying that it's virtually dust free, but obviously it is not guaranteed to be dust free. This should be good for people looking to crush rocks in their garage or workshop, with the door open, obviously...LOL!
    I think it's a success, and I like the design, so I will now be incorporating this model into my Ebay page. The original model with the built in anti-kickback door will still be available.
    As always, feel free to contact me at soprospector@gmail.com if you have any questions at all.

    Is there a reason you aren't using a round form like most do?
    I'm interested in getting one of these and the russian guy seems out of business these days, but it would be nice to have a few additional features. Namely a discharge spout with steel wire mesh filter space that gets locked in against the body. And secondly a spout that would just fit inside something like a pringles can which is easily found world wide.

    • @southernoregonprospector9074
      @southernoregonprospector9074  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually yes, and I talk about it in my original mill release video 2 years ago. I tried different styles when designing the mill and I found that the octagon shape actually causes the material to bounce around more which aids in crushing, whereas the round style seemed to cause material to just get shot around and ride against the inner wall of the mill and took longer to crush.
      The round style is more popular because it's easy, just cut a piece of pipe and weld on 2 ends and you're done. I'm a fabricator of over 30 years, and a prospector, so I wanted to make a mill that worked great, regardless of how much extra work and materials I had to put into it. And I kept that mindset when I decided to make them publicly available. I have a video showing how I build them too, if you want to checkout.
      I strive to make a great product that I am proud of, and that I think people will be happy with. I also try to make it with the ability to add features, either ones that I sell, or ones that anyone wants to fabricate themselves and add to the mill...that's why I build the opening on the door the way I do, if someone doesn't want to buy my discharge tube assembly then they still have the groundwork to build their own. Plus, even with the massive rise in steel and parts prices I have kept my price the exact same as the first day I started selling them. Thanks for the kind words, and let me know if there's any other questions you have, I try to respond asap.
      P.S. If you don't see anymore mills on my ebay page...I think I have 3 or 4 left....don't worry because I will be making more in October. Take care, and happy prospecting!

      @@southernoregonprospector9074 Have you an idea of what mesh sizes you can mill down to? is it a case of keeping it going for longer to make it smaller or is there more of a cut off with capability? I'm looking at mesh screens right now and it's not as cheap to order a whole batch as I thought it might be, so any heads up on that?

    • @southernoregonprospector9074
      @southernoregonprospector9074  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@8thsinner I offer an add on for the mill that comes with a discharge tube assembly and 2 screen sizes included. It can be run with or without screens, but you are right that the longer you leave material in the mill, the finer it will get crushed. In general it only takes a few seconds to get material down to a baby powder consistency, which is what you want when checking rocks for gold...the finer the better. As with any crusher, you should always screen your material down to the size you want, and just rerun any material that's too big.

    Wouldn't just keeping the original anti-kickback design, and slapping a piece of magnetic sheet on top, be an easy way to control dust?

    • @southernoregonprospector9074
      @southernoregonprospector9074  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That might be a good way to stop a bunch of it, but it also creeps out of the tiny space around the hinging part of the lid mechanism. I made this version based on multiple customer requests. But the best way to eliminate dust is to use it with a vacuum, then it's completely dust free.

    I don’t know if you’ll see this but I moved to Medford from Iowa last year. Just bought my first metal detector today! Fisher gold bug! Could you give me a few good public places to try out? Preferably off some popular trails? I just wanna find one little picker before I leave Oregon haha and climb mt McLaughlin and catch a steelhead out of the rogue! 😀

    • @southernoregonprospector9074
      @southernoregonprospector9074  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, the gold bug is a great metal detector, especially for a first one! Not sure how far you are willing to travel, but I'm more near the Illinois River. There are some great spots to metal detect and prospect off of 8 Dollar Mt. Road, off of the 199. At the end of the road there is a dirt road you can drive (for 4x4) or walk, and if you go down it a little bit you'll hit the old tailings piles and hydraulic workings of the first major strike where gold was found in Oregon in I believe 1853. It's on the Illinois River, just downstream of Josephine Creek, which is another great and historically rich area to detect and prospect. There are some claims, but not that many. Hope this helps get you started, and good luck! Let me know if you find any nuggets!

    Anti kickback lid allows for faster feed, but cap lid is almost dust free, as it kills the velocity of dust, forcing it to do a 180 degree turn. What reduces the dust even more, however, is the octagonal seal. So you can try to add this type of seal material on the inside of the lid.

    • @southernoregonprospector9074
      @southernoregonprospector9074  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are correct on the octagonal seal tape, and the neoprene material inside of the lid is what provides the dust sel for the top...of course holding it down with a finger or two helps tremendously.
