@@aresee8208 You're pettifogging, monsieur. Fact is, Sherlock Holmes, of course, is a British creation (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle), with storylines set in Britain, as with "HOTB." What's more, the actors (e.g., Rathbone & Bruce) are clearly British. (Although Rathbone was born in South Africa to British parents and Bruce in Mexico to British parents.) . Face it: Remove EVERYTHING British from "HOTB" (and Sherlock Holmes as a whole) and guess what -- no such film would exist. Indeed, the fact that this picture was made in America by an American studio does not contradict the Britishness at the heart of it all. . PS: Prince Harry resides in USA -- does this cause you to define him as an American rather than a Brit?

Twentieth Century Fox?? But these are all staple actors, from Universal. And the remaining Sherlock Holmes' sequels, are all Universal pictures🤔!!! This is a wonderful 😊 classical movie.. seen it several times.. there should have been more ole England movies like this made, England has the old creepy graveyards, streets and cottages of stones that's always made a great setting for foggy moonlit spooky movies..
You are so right Ma'am. I never have been to England, however I have seen many movies set in England, and the scenery always makes those movies more interesting and spooky. When I was stationed in Germany, I would go out on walks, just after midnight, on very foggy nights and while on lonely cobbled lanes, I would stop to listen to the moisture dripping from the trees and think about old English movies I saw as a kid, and a chill would run up and down my spine. Those walks would have been less dramatic if not for those movies I enjoyed as a child.
Of course, this movie was made at the 20th Century Fox Studios in Los Angeles. But, most Hollywood studios had pretty good sets that stood in for England (and other countries as well).
No exactly. The second movie, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1939), like "The Hound of the Baskervilles", made at Twentieth Century Fox Studios, was likewise set in the Victorian era. The twelve movies made after that at Universal Studios, starting with "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror" (1942), were the ones set in the then present time.
Sounds like a howl to me and they've been talking about a hound and yet when there's an obvious howl Sir Henry always thinks it's the wind. How come he can't put the two things together
The only problem with these wonderful films is that Dr. Watson was played for comedy relief, often as a buffoon. He was an intelligent, articulate, loyal companion. There was none of the buffoon about him.
Of course, Dame Agatha Christie followed the example of Holmes & Watson in her mystery protagonists Hercule Poirot and Dr Arthur Hastings, as an "homage" to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Old version of Sherlock holmes actor is much better than remake of BBC or modern movie version. Sidney Paget draw is should be standar is what is Sherlock holmes should look like.
@@grimlund This does nothing to answer why his cane has the bites of "A rather large dog" and in this filmed version he also mentions he had a small spaniel
@grigorirasputin9507 The book says it was a spaniel I think. Holmes said that the dog was "Larger then a terrier, smaller then a mastif!" Nothing in the book tells anything about the dog being large.
It's a somewhat barren area of usually rocky, higher ground.. where only harsh plants and wind fighting trees grow. Not easy to cultivate and grazed by sturdy horses and sheep. This film features DARTMOOR, in Devon, in the UK. Cheers.. Liam Dale

This is the worst adaptation of the hound of the baskervilles not because of the acting so much as the writing and the casting. Mortimer is supposed to be young the guy playing him looks like he is 65. The way the dialog is presented strays quite far from the source material as well.
I had seen this movie many times but never heard the last line from Holmes where he said, "Oh Watson, the needle." I would assume Watson provided him with opium for an injection. I wonder if that's normally edited out? This was an excellent print of the film.
Thank you, Great British Classic Film and TV.
This is the sharpest and most clear copy of "Hound of the Baskervilles" on TH-cam.

Such an excellent name. BASIL RATHBONE hehe
He and Nigel Bruce did the radio show Sherlock Holmes. They're available on TH-cam. I can't seem to link it for you.
Wonderful as always , this is a fine Sherlock Holmes ... I love these Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories. Merry Christmas everyone ~ Blessings . 🇺🇸 🙏🏻

Zanuck created a work of art. This is not editted for TV, so it's just the best. I always thought this was made in Britain, wonderful.

Holmes never used heroin:his drug of choice was cocaine. Which, in this era, was quite common.
Cept.. 1.. this is a MOVIE not a documentary.. and 2.. Holmes isn't real! lol
Yeah, right, Holmes would not like a speed-ball, at all?😂
seven, seven per cent.

And in the books Watson wasn’t a bumbling halfwit.

Good Film 🍿 😊
5:57 Sherlock Holmes is Basil Rathbone and dr Watson is Nigel Bruce. Nobody comes near.
Dear fellow, I think you underestimate Jeremy BRETT.
Looked like a regular hound to me, just trained to do some "attack" scenes.
Why does everybody come and go to Baskerville Hall at night? Aren't they ever out and about during the daytime?
The very end where Holmes says "Watson, the needle" refers to the fact that Holmes would take an injection of a 7% solution of cocaine to relax.
59:00 Sir Henry is a class act.
The only Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movie that is period appropriate - the late Victorian era. The rest were anachronistically set during WW2

in the painting of Hugo Baskerville the painted figure looks to the left in the portrait and to the right when Holmes puts his hands on the portrait
interesting to see Nigel Bruce playing Dr. Watson before he really became Dr. Watson.
The only problem with these wonderful films is that Dr. Watson was played for comedy relief, often as a buffoon. He was an intelligent, articulate, loyal companion. There was none of the buffoon about him.
